Alan Menken Shares ‘The Little Mermaid’ Will Feature New Music and Rapping. Though many Disney Fans remain split on their feelings about the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, there is no denying the star power and the excitement to see famed composers Alan Menken and Lin Manuel-Miranda collaborate on the films album and scores.
During a recent guest appearance on the UK-based arts and theatre podcast eleven, Menken shared how much he has enjoyed working with Lin and the films star, Halle Bailey. Alan also shared that the film will feature rapping!
“There is some rapping in it and I really can’t take much credit for the rap aspect of it. Yeah, there’s some rapping in it, there’s some very Menken songs, there’s some very Miranda songs. But it’s all the blend of Menken–Miranda, Menken shared.
He continued, “I love him, I love working with him. I’m glad we had the opportunity to do that and he’s also a producer on the movie but Lin juggles a lot of things, as I do, so we will have occasional contact. Right now it’s in the hands of the amazing [director] Rob Marshall and as we speak they are in London right now filming.”
Speaking on his time with Halle, Alan gushed over her talent and the chance to work with her, sharing, “Oh my gosh, she is adorable and so talented. I met Halle at the recording sessions,” he said. “I did have to be educated in terms of what she and her sister do together, which is incredible. She is an amazing talent, a beautiful girl, and I got to meet her family.”
Filming for The Little Mermaid is already underway at Pinewood Studios in London. The Cast for Disney’s Live-Action The Little Mermaid currently includes: Halle Bailey (Ariel), Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Javier Bardem (King Triton), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Emily Coates (Unspecified, rumored: Vanessa), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), Awkwafina (Scuttle) and Noma Dumezweni (unspecified). How long do you think it would take you to put together a 40 thousand-piece puzzle? For Maxine Olive of Belleville, Ontario, that’s more of a challenge than a hypothetical question. She recently set the world record by finishing the Ravensburger Memorable Moments puzzle in 150 hours. That’s a 40,320-piece jigsaw puzzle in nine grueling days.
The puzzle features 10 sections depicting popular Disney characters such as Peter Pan, Dumbo, and Beauty and the Beast, as shown in photos. The dimensions for the puzzle are also shown. Once completed, it measures 22 feet by 6 feet and weighs more than 40 pounds. Supposedly it is the world’s largest puzzle. An American man previously held the record for completing the puzzle in 423 hours.
To take on the challenge, Olive took time off work and was forced to clear out her living room to make space for the massive puzzle. She worked continuously, only stopping to eat and sleep. According to her interview with Global News, her shortest day was 13 and a half hours long and her longest stretch of work meant only sleeping one hour between two days. “By that last day it felt like everything hurt and my brain was turning to mush,” she hyperbolized.
Olive has since taken the puzzle apart, a necessary action considering it took up her entire living room. She will be submitting to Guinness the video footage of her completing the puzzle. Congratulations, Olive, on your impressive skill and accomplishment!

TOY STORY CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES
INGREDIENTS:
10 strawberries
1/3 cup each of melted dipping chocolate in yellow, white, dark blue, purple, brown, sky blue and green
1 tbsp of vanilla cookie crumbs
1 tbsp of blue sugar sprinkles
2 tbsp each of fondant, in white, pink, turquoise, red, yellow, green and brown
3 mini yellow confetti sprinkles
1 drop of brown food coloring
2 tbsp each of icing in red, black, and white
Materials
Toothpick
Small rolling pin
Straw
Paring knife
Large spoon
Piping bags fitted with #1 and #3 tips
Small decorating brush
INSTRUCTIONS:
Dip the strawberries in the dipping chocolate and place on parchment paper to set.
Dip 2 berries in yellow, 2 in white, 1 in dark blue, 1 in purple, 1 in brown, 1 in sky blue, 1 in tan (mix white chocolate with brown food coloring) and 1 in green.
After it has set, drizzle one of the yellow strawberries with more yellow chocolate. Before the tan chocolate sets, sprinkle it with cookie crumbs. Before the sky blue chocolate sets, sprinkle it with blue sugar sprinkles.
Create Bo’s details using white, pink and turquoise fondant. Use a toothpick, rolling pin, straw and paring knife as tools to shape the fondant.
For the 3 white flowers, use a toothpick to create petal impressions. Attach a yellow mini confetti sprinkle in the center of each flower.
Create Woody’s details using red, yellow, brown and green fondant. Use the toothpick to draw a longhorn image on the yellow belt buckle.
Create Woody’s hat from brown fondant. Attach a dented oval of fondant to the center of a flat rolled oval. Use a knife to cut little grooves into the hat’s trim. To shape, place the hat into a large spoon to dry. Paint a dark band around the base of the top portion of the hat.
Create Bo’s bow from a strip of rolled pink fondant. Use a knife to create line patterns on the fondant “ribbon,” then cut a small piece off of the end. Tuck both ends under until they meet. Then wrap the cut piece around the center to create a bow.
Use the red icing (in a piping bag fitted with a #3 tip) to draw criss-cross marks on the plain yellow strawberry.
Using the black icing (in a piping bag fitted with a #3 tip) draw black spots on the white strawberry, and also to write “Bonnie” on the brown boot strawberry.
Use a small brush and dabs of white icing to paint faint, denim-like streaks on the dark blue strawberry.
Use white icing (in a piping bag fitted with a #1 tip) to pipe Bo’s top design on the blue strawberry and string detail on her staff and button.
Attach the fondant details on the strawberries using small dabs of white icing. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge.
Good news for parents who love Hollywood Studios: Disney Junior Play n’ Dine Breakfast is returning to Hollywood & Vine! This character dining experience has been closed since the park’s shuttering last March, but will be reopening with health and safety measures to keep little ones entertained on your next visit.
On March 22nd, characters such as Fancy Nancy, Vampirina, and Doc McStuffins will be making the rounds in the dining room as guests enjoy their breakfasts. The experience used to be a buffet but is now an all-you-can-eat à-la-carte menu. Start with shared pastries like caramel monkey bread, croissants, and mini muffins. Entrées include pancakes, Hazelnut Spread-stuffed French Toast, a Toasted Open-faced Salmon Bagel, Four-Egg Cheese Omelet (Swiss, Smoked Gouda, Cheddar), and a plant-based frittata.
Character breakfasts are a great way to keep seeing your favorite characters at Walt Disney World. Since meet-and-greets are not currently happening, these distanced options ensure that your kids get to see the characters they came for. Instead of hoping to catch a glimpse of them on Sunset Boulevard, why not make a reservation and relax? Kids and adults will enjoy the food and everybody can get off their feet for a while.
Adults eat for $42 and kids aged 3-9 eat for $27. If that seems pricey, remember that this is one of the few character experiences available at the parks currently. If you’d rather see Mickey and Minnie, you can also check out their character dinners at this same location! It’s sure to be a hit for the whole family.
