Portillo's Orlando has a new Grand Opening Date

Here is the official word:

Fast-casual chain Portillo’s is updating fans on a new grand opening date for its restaurant located in The Village at O-Town West in Orlando. The event will now take place on March 23, 2021. The restaurant joins two other Florida Portillo’s, located in Tampa and Brandon. The restaurant, which sits at 7715 Palm Parkway, officially opens to the public at 10:30am.

“Frankly, we just needed to give our buns more time to steam,” said Michael Portillo, Vice President of Restaurant Support.  “Our team relishes the opportunity to serve our loyal Central Florida fans on our new opening date, March 23rd.”

PORTILLOS

Once open, guests can expect to enjoy Portillo’s signature menu items like Chicago-Style Hot Dogs, Famous Italian Beef Sandwiches, Char-Grilled Burgers and Portillo’s Famous Chocolate Cake. The 7,800-square-foot restaurant features double drive-thru lanes as well as two large covered outdoor patios. The interior features a diner theme, with an ode to rock ‘n roll with an electric guitar ceiling installation.

To help launch the new restaurant, Portillo’s designed a limited-edition t-shirt for this location. Guests are invited to sign up for Portillo’s Birthday Club to receive one of these shirts on opening day, while supplies last. Fans who sign up also receive a slice of Portillo’s homemade chocolate cake on their birthday. Fans can register to receive updates on the Portillo’s Lake Buena Vista location by signing up online.

White Castle closes down mobile order due to overwhelming demand

White Castle
White Castle

It looks like the demand for White Castle sliders is even greater than expected! It’s been a hectic week, but White Castle is temporarily suspending the operations of its new Orlando ghost kitchen.

The White Castle organization issued the following statement:

“We are going to pause operations at our virtual kitchen in Orlando until after our full-service restaurant location in the O-Town West development opens. The overwhelming number of orders for White Castle has been humbling and reinforces we made the right choice to choose Central Florida as the site for our next permanent destination Castle. Because of the relatively small size of the virtual kitchen and the incredibly high number of orders, running the virtual kitchen isn’t currently sustainable.”

According to the company’s website, the ghost kitchen location is near John Young Parkway and Colonial Drive. The food will be available within a 15-minute radius of the location at 18 N. Dollins Ave.

Ghost kitchens, which do not have dining rooms, are a trend for restaurants trying to reach delivery and takeout customers.

White Castle says it plans to resume operations in the Spring when its full-service restaurant opens near Disney World.  We will post updates when more information becomes available on their new Orlando location.

Florida’s Theme Parks are rebounding faster than most states

Theme Parks
Theme Parks

The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAPPA) observes how the pandemic has made an impact on employment within the industry.

Their recent study uses data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and compares employment numbers from 2019 and 2020. IAPPA found the attractions and theme park industry experienced an employment loss five times more than the average employment loss across all other industries.

However, the Sunshine State seems to be recovering from the impact of the pandemic quicker than others.

Theme Parks

The IAPPA study specifically compares Florida and California as both states have similar attractions. As the two states are the largest employers in the amusement parks and arcade industry, the study looks at their peak seasons and employment data to recognize recovery trends during the pandemic.

Most states shut down their parks early into the start of the pandemic in 2020, with Florida’s theme parks choosing to close their gates in March. However, Florida reopened its facilities in July, thus mitigating its severe unemployment numbers, according to the study.

IAPPA notes Florida worked quicker than most other states to reopen facilities with enhanced procedures to mitigate the virus.

Yet, the study notes, Florida’s theme park and attractions industry hasn’t fully recovered and likely won’t until 2022.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard $50 Million Defamation Lawsuit Delayed Once Again

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard $50 Million Defamation Lawsuit Delayed Once Again

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard $50 Million Defamation Lawsuit Delayed Once Again. Back in September, the Depp vs. Heard defamation lawsuit was delayed from January 2021 to May 2021, but now in February the suit has been pushed back once more.

The May 7, 2021 court date has been pushed back to April 11, 2022 due to the advancement of a murder trial in Virginia. Criminal cases have taken priority over civil suits across the US as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread. Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard have been in a series of suits in both the US and UK, with varying outcomes.

Theme parks in California remain closed during the pandemic. While many are willing and able to reopen safely, the state reopening guidelines prevent that from happening.

Now, the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors is supporting a bill that would allow larger theme parks to reopen sooner. Right now, larger theme parks cannot reopen until their county reaches the lowest tier on the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy plan.

The bill would allow theme parks to reopen in the moderate tier rather than the minimal tier. Supervisor Kathryn Barger sent a letter to the bill’s sponsors earlier this month.

“With full outdoor operations and the ability to maintain physical distancing, theme parks across the country have proven that they can safely reopen,” Barger wrote. “Large theme parks nationwide began reopening last summer and there (have) not yet been any outbreaks or spread from these establishments.”

Densely populated counties like Orange and Los Angeles would have an extremely difficult time reaching the minimal tier which requires less than one daily case of COVID per 100,000 residents and a test positivity rate of less than 2%. That would keep parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood closed indefinitely. Take a look at the tiers below:

The LA Board’s vote was unanimously in support of the bill.

Even if theme parks are allowed to open sooner, capacity will still be limited and strict health & safety protocols will need to be in place.
