Skyliner Terminal Construction Underway at Hollywood Studios

Bus & Skyliner Terminal Construction Underway at Hollywood Studios

Bus & Skyliner Terminal Construction Underway at Hollywood Studios! Construction has commenced on the Bus and Skyliner terminals at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! We have been watching this progress over the last several months and you can now see some major progress.  Once the project is complete, a system of gondolas will carry guests to nearby Disney Resort hotels. This will be just one of the many changes they have made to free up room on Disney buses throughout Walt Disney World.  Plans also include service to a port at Epcot’s World Showcase, similar to the existing water taxi system. A completion date has not yet been set but if we had to guess, maybe by years end?

They are so close to done now. Look at this progress!

What are your thoughts?  Do you think you can handle a slow ride from the resort to park in one of these? Disney has not announced an official completion date for this project but once it is open it will connect Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, and the future DVC property, Disney’s Riveria Resort located next to Coronado Springs. The Disney Skyliner Gondola is expected to be up and running through by the middle of 2019.

Sebastian’s Bistro Now Open At Caribbean Beach Resort

I had the pleasure of dining at this delicious new restaurant located at Caribbean Beach Resort. I was dining with close friends and we were excited to be here so soon after its opening!  As you walk in the door the fresh island theme decor greets you with a mix of tropical colors and relaxing neutrals.

Sebastian's Bistro Now Open At Caribbean Beach Resort

We made our way through the dining room, to our table, an enjoyed the casual atmosphere with a wonderful scent of specialty dishes in the air. My mouth began to water in anticipation of what was to come.

Large windows let in plenty of natural light and a view of Barefoot Bay.

The ceilings are high. A great feeling of space. Even with filled tables during dinner, the dining room felt airy and open. Exposed beams are decorated with under the sea kelp and tropical vines.

Our table was comfortable and perfect for conversation. Three were in our dinner party and there was plenty of seating space for more.  Some tables near us included children. The families were accommodated easily. The seat cushions were generous in our booth. Kids can get antsy during a meal and there is space for this. A parents dream!

Enough about the decor lets get to the real reason we are here- THE FOOD!

Sebastian's Bistro Now Open At Caribbean Beach Resort

As I mentioned, walking through the door made my mouth water. While we looked over the menu our attentive server made a quick suggestion of some appetizers. He also described some fun drinks which we quickly agreed to taste!

Okay, I have to stop for just a moment and comment on the artwork on the menu. How fun is this watercolor image of Sebastian!

Our drink order was as colorful as the Sebastian mural on the dining room wall.  More on that a bit later!

A Caribbean Smuggler, Caribbean Mai-Tai and a Jamaican Old Fashioned were our selections and they were delicious. Additional cocktails, selections of beer, hard cider sparkling water, non-alcoholic specialty drinks, and the usual selection of family-friendly beverages are also available.

Appetizers arrived and wow. Flavors and presentation were both amazing. Caribbean pull-apart bread with three toppings, guava butter, fresh mango chutney, and Jamaica Jerk oil, did not last long at the table.

Sebastian's Bistro Now Open At Caribbean Beach Resort

Marauders Snack had three toppings as well, and disappeared just as quick. Tostones, Arepas, and house-made crackers topped with black bean hummus, guacamole, and Pico de Gallo – all delicious!

Being in the mood for Caribbean food this menu had me wanting to try every entree offered! Here are three we selected from the varied menu. Something for everyone, meat, seafood, fish, and meatless dishes are all offered.

Caribbean Goat Curry paired with cilantro rice and crispy yuka amazing! Don’t let the goat scare you away from this dish. The meat was tender and nothing was left on the plate.

For a more traditional selection, Slow-Cooked Pork Shoulder served “taco” style, with black beans and cilantro rice is your pick

Being a beef lover, the Grilled Skirt Steak and crispy yuka did not disappoint!

Of note, as we finished our entrees, the water glasses caught my eye. Our server explained they are repurposed wine bottles. (notice the dimple in the base). I love this eco-friendly detail.

Even with full bellies, we made room for dessert. There is always room for dessert.

From left to right –

Warm Chocolate Pudding a dark chocolate cake topped with a cocoa-nibs tuile and caramel crispies.

Message In A Bottle coconut-rice pannacotta, with pineapple and mango-lime sorbet beautifully topped colored white chocolate.

Mile Marker Zero iced key lime pops with sea salt and a tropical fruit sauce.

Joffrey’s Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is available as a fitting finish to this wonderful meal.

Disneyland Officially Scraps Plans for New Resort Hotel

anaheim resort concept art

Disneyland has officially pulled the plug on plans to build its fourth on-site hotel near Downtown Disney.

Walt Disney Company officials announced today that plans for the 4-diamond, 700-room mega hotel will not go forth. This is due to an ongoing disagreement between Disneyland and the City of Anaheim.

Plans were originally put on hold in mid-August, after the City of Anaheim eliminated a tax rebate agreement that would have been very good to Disneyland–to the tune of $267 million over the course of a 20-year period. Those funds would have been used to help fund the massive project that had a projected completion date of sometime in 2021.

The new luxury hotel would have created almost 1,100 jobs. It would further have generated $400 million in hotel room taxes over that 20-year period.

On the far end side of Downtown Disney, near the projected location of the new property, several dining and entertainment venues had closed to allow for construction to begin. One of those venues–Earl of Sandwich–just underwent its grand reopening, but it’s not clear whether other venues will reopen. Those include the ESPN Zone, AMC Theaters and more.

First Poster for Disney’s Aladdin Debuts Tomorrow

aladdin poster

The first movie poster for Disney’s new live-action Aladdin debuts tomorrow, but Will Smith gave fans a sneak peek today.

The poster features only Genie’s lamp with smoke coming from it, a glow behind it and the words “CHOOSE WISELY” across the bottom.

“Lemme Out!! Can’t wait for y’all to see me BLUE…” Smith posted on Instagram, along with a shot of the first movie poster. Smith will play the iconic role of Genie, which was made infamous by the late Robin Williams who lent his voice to the animated Genie in Disney’s 1992 Aladdin.

The live-action version of the story of Aladdin and his quest to earn the heart of Princess Jasmine will hit theaters May 24, 2019.

Aulani Resort Honored by Hawaii Tourism Authority

Disney's Aulani Resort

Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa was celebrated with the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s highest honor–the Tourism Legacy Award.

The award was presented at the 2018 Global Tourism Summit. The Tourism Legacy Award focuses on businesses and organizations that celebrate Hawaiian culture. Hawaiian Airlines received the honor alongside Aulani.

This year, the honorees were chosen because of their efforts in helping to integrate Hawaiian language into everyday life.

hawaii tourism authority

At Disney’s Aulani, visitors and native Hawaiians alike gather in the ‘Olelo Room. ‘Olelo means “word” or “to converse.” The ‘Olelo Room is a place where people come together to listen to Hawaiian music played by award-winning musicians and to speak ‘Olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian language). Those who want to learn the language come to the ‘Olelo Room to hear it spoken and to learn the language themselves. Around the room, common objects are labeled with the word for them in ‘Olelo Hawaii. For example, chairs are labeled “Noho,” and tables are labeled “Pakaukau.”

The ‘Olelo Room embodies Aulani Resort‘s dedication to celebrating the language and culture of Hawaii. It’s also a big part of the reason Aulani was honored with the Tourism Legacy Award.

Tony Abou-Ganim Hosts Vodka Tasting at Maria & Enzo’s

Tony Abou-Ganim Hosts Vodka Tasting at Maria & Enzo's

Tony Abou-Ganim Hosts Vodka Tasting at Maria & Enzo's

Tony Abou-Ganim hosted a Vodka 101 tasting and cocktail class at Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante.  The Modern Mixologist brought his love and knowledge of vodka to the First Class Lounge at Disney Spring’s Maria & Enzo’s. When I say his knowledge of vodka, Tony wrote the book on vodka literally – “Vodka Distilled.” I will say this… I love vodka.  I thoroughly enjoy vodka-based cocktails, so I was ecstatic that I got to attend this event hosted by the expert of vodka!

Welcome Cocktail

Tony Abou-Ganim Hosts Vodka Tasting at Maria & Enzo's

You know it is going to be an incredible class when the welcome cocktail -Happiness is exquisitely crafted.  The drink is very special to Tony.  It is in memory of his aunt, Helen David, who was a two-time breast cancer survivor.  He created the Helen David Relief Fund in her honor for bartenders affected by breast cancer.  To find out more about the Helen David Relief Fund, click here.

Here is the recipe for Happiness:

1 1/2 oz Absolut Pink Grapefruit

1 oz St Germaine Elderflower

1/2 oz Aperol

1 oz fresh ruby red grapefruit juice

1 oz fresh lemon juice

1/2 oz simple syrup

Shaken and strained over ice in a tall Collins or large wine glass. Garnish with a slice of fresh ruby red grapefruit and a sprig of spearmint.

Vodka Education

Time to get schooled in vodka.  I did not really know the backstory of the liquor beside the fact it is from Russia. Since the late 1980s, vodka has been the most consumed spirit in the United States.  I had no idea it was nonexistent in the United States in the early to mid-1900s.  It was really interesting diving into the evolution of vodka in the US.

Blind Tasting

Now armed with knowledge, it was time to blind taste ten different brands of vodka.  I have never done a vodka tasting before.  Wine, on the other hand, I have done A LOT of tastings.  I was excited to see if my usual standard of Tito’s would indeed be my favorite. Slowly, but surely we made our way through all ten. To be honest, I was not the best on smelling the different notes. The only sample, I felt “confident” on the notes was number seven LOL!

Here is the list of the vodka brands our class sampled:

  • Ketel One
  • Skyy
  • Tito’s
  • Chopin
  • Stoli Gluten Free
  • Stoli Elit
  • Grey Goose
  • Belvedere
  • Reyka
  • Ciroc

Results

Tony Abou-Ganim Hosts Vodka Tasting at Maria & Enzo's

I was shocked that Ciroc was my favorite!  It is made from grapes, so maybe my love of wine has something to do with it. Interestingly enough, the table I was seated at all agreed on their favorites for the most part – number three (Ciroc), number seven (Reyka), and number 10 (Belvedere). I was laughing at the fact that my usual standard of Tito’s I only marked as OK.  The one I did NOT like though was number nine, Chopin. It is true what they say “you learn something new every day!”

Discussion

After the results were revealed, the team from The Edison brought over some delicious signature light bites and their take on the infamous Moscow Mule – The Electric Mule (YUM).  While noshing and sipping, the whole room just lit up with a discussion on what they thought as Tony answered questions and spoke with guests. It was fun engaging with the other guests to see which ones they preferred, etc. Lastly, we were all gifted our own signed copy of “Vodka Distilled” which was just the icing on the cake. It was the perfect ending to an amazing evening.

Overall Thoughts

I learned SO much from the Modern Mixologist – Tony Abou-Ganim during his Vodka 101 Tasting and Cocktail Class.  He is a true artist, and his medium is vodka. It was amazing to see his passion in action. To find out more information on Tony and his book – “Vodka Distilled,” click here. Hopefully, he will be returning to Disney World again for another awesome class.
