What We Learned from “Ralph Breaks The Internet” Press Conference

What We Learned from "Ralph Breaks The Internet" Press Conference

“Ralph Breaks the Internet” welcomes back to the big screen video-game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz. This time, they leave Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and fast-paced world of the internet—which can be both incredibly exciting and overwhelming, depending on who you ask.

The follow-up to 2012’s “Wreck-It Ralph” marks the first feature-length theatrical sequel from Walt Disney Animation Studios since 2000’s “Fantasia/2000,” which was a sequel to 1940’s “Fantasia.” The only other sequel in the Disney Animation canon is 1990’s “The Rescuers Down Under.” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is WDAS’ first-ever sequel to be created by the original film’s writing/directing team.

We attended the “Ralph Breaks the Internet” Press Conference a few weeks ago in Beverly Hills, California. The Press conference was moderated by actress and host, Dani Fernandez.

Cast and Crew in attendance:

  • John C. Reilly (Ralph)
  • Sarah Silverman (Vanellope)
  • Taraji P. Henson (Yesss)
  • Jack McBrayer (Felix)
  • Director Rich Moore
  • Director Phil Johnston
  • Producer Clark Spencer
  • Co-Writer Pamela Ribbon

What We Learned from "Ralph Breaks The Internet" Press Conference

Rich Moore and Phil Johnston were asked about creating a sequel after the original film ended on such a happy note. This is what they had to say:

Moore: We looked at the very last line of the first movie where Ralph says, after going friendless for the whole movie and then finally making a friend, he’s back home and says if that little kid likes me, how bad can I be? And it seemed at the time, it’s so sweet. It’s a wonderful sentiment. But then as we continued to kind of pick at it, we said, that’s really, really dysfunctional. That this guy is defining himself by what his best friend thinks. And it’s a great best friend. But what if she were not to like him someday? What would that lead to?

Johnston: And so knowing that he still had quite a bit of insecurity, he still had farther to go in his journey. Then we had only known Vanellope for like 35 minutes or 40 minutes. So she has a whole other story. So, we had to keep going with these characters.

When asked about insecurities and dealing with them, we heard from John C. Reilly:

I’ve worked really hard not to let my insecurities slow me down. I think that’s one of the important things every person in their life has to do is learn not to judge yourself and be kind to yourself inside of your own thoughts. But I do think I’m insecure about, probably because my mom said to me almost every time I left the house. She would say don’t wear out your welcome. Where are you going? Oh, go over there. Don’t wear out your welcome. Because I spent most of my day just wandering around the neighborhood going to different relative’s houses.

The Internet is a huge part of the film and our lives in general. Looking back, the cast talks about what they miss from the pre-Internet days:

Kids going outside, being home when the lights come on. Go outside and play. Use your imagination. How about that?”

There were a few names thrown about in naming Ralph Breaks the Internet including Ralph Wrecks the Internet the director answers the question with:

It’s one of those conundrums where no matter what you call it, someone is going to say, well, but shouldn’t it be Ralph Breaks the Internet since that’s the expression? And since we liked that it has a dual meaning (PH) of him going viral and then also actually destroying the Internet, we thought, let’s go with that. Let’s go with Ralph Breaks the Internet. Knowing that there would be a backlash. Of shouldn’t it be called.

Technology has come along that enabled the filmmakers to do something here that they would not have been able to do if they had done the film any earlier, Clark Spencer and Phil Johnston respond:

CLARK SPENCER: Well, I think there are two things that end up happening. One is technology is just improving in terms of the ability to render faster, which is a big key component to it. The second thing with Kong Ralph which is really interesting, we had to change our pipeline paradigm. We had to actually not let it be something that would happen at the end of our process. We would have four departments come together to work in tandem with each other. So it’s really the effects department, lighting, animation, and crowds, who all came together to work as a team which is outside of the pipeline we usually use. And then the third piece is technology came in and really figured out a way to make sure that the characters don’t interpenetrate each other. That was going to the biggest most complicated part of it. There is 50,000 Ralphs in that Kong Ralph. And to make sure that they don’t actually interpenetrate in any shot that we’re actually looking at. So there are many pieces of the puzzle that had to all come together to create that. And it’s a story where the directors had this idea and the story artists pitched it. Then you wonder again, is it something that we’re going to actually be able to realize in time. And it was an incredible process to actually watch come together.

PHIL JOHNSTON: Also, there are 50,000 in the close-up. There is 300,000 total I was just told the other day. 300,000.

Rich Moore discusses the future of the story:

Like the first one, we’re at that point where we feel like, it’s buttoned up nice and clean. That there cannot possibly be another story after this one. That’s what we thought on the first one. So unless we start digging at this and find that there is some sort of opportunity to be mined, I think right now, it feels as if they’re great companion pieces, it kinda ends here.

What We Learned from "Ralph Breaks The Internet" Press Conference

Sarah Silverman talks about what it means to be a Disney Princess:

Will it affect my act? Will it affect my attitude? I don’t know that it will affect my act. Although everything affects my act. Just living. But yeah. It’s a thrill. And it’s something that the idea of Disney Princess, what make it good is that it has grown and changed. That Disney has taken on progress and inclusivity and has grown and changed in positive ways. And where a classic Disney Princess, and really, this movie just face it head-on. Leans right into it. Well, you get saved by a man. And you’re in great distress. Your life is threatened. And then someone else saves you. And then to all in one movie acknowledge all of that and then shatter it is so exciting. And to get to be this kid who becomes like a princess with an attainable waistline. And wearing comfortable clothes. And I always like, as a comic, this is really going a different direction. But we end up in diners late at night after shows. And who also ends up at diners late at night are young girls, young people coming out of the clubs, dance clubs and stuff like that. I would see young women in half shirts and sky-high heels. And they’re freezing cold. They’re like this shivering. And their feet hurt. I just think. I just wish I could tell them that they don’t have to be uncomfortable to deserve love. Boys are not raised to think that they ever have to sacrifice comfort to be loved. And it just always struck me. I would go oh. I would be in like my hoodie and jeans and just think, these girls don’t think that they can get love without this insane amount of physical discomfort. And I love that Vanellope kind of sheds light on these grown-up princesses that are uncomfortable hanging out. And Twitter just announced, I mean, didn’t just announce. But someone was talking about it months and months ago. I said, yeah. She’s Jewish. I just made her Jewish. Now it’s Canon which I enjoy. Von Schweetz. I don’t know. Is that Jewish?

Pop Up Book Shop

Pop Up Book Shop

If there is a book lover on your holiday shopping list this season, we have good news for you! The Contemporary Resort has recently added a pop-up book shop for the Disney loving bibliophile in your life.

A Pop-Up Book Shop Has Been Spotted at the Contemporary Resort

There is something for everyone here from the youngest readers in your life to the Disney history buffs. Among the offerings is “its a small world” which is just one of a series of fun children books based on classic Disney attractions. From personal experience I can attest to the fact that these books are a hit (with the young and young at heart)! You can also find various “coffee table” books filled with park maps and historical facts about the Walt Disney Company and Disney Parks.

Sci Fi Dining Car Returns in Front of Restaurant After Refurbishment

Sci Fi Car Returns in Front of Restaurant After Refurbishment

It’s back!  After the Sci Fi Dine In Theater Restuarant in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios received a few magical enhancements the dining car is once again out in front of the restaurant.   This special item gives guests an example of what type of table, or vehicle, they will be dining in.

The Disney parks are known for their unique dining experiences and this is no exception.  The Sci Fi Dine In Theater Restaurant transports guests to a 1950’s style drive-in movie theater where you dine in car shaped booths.      Each family dines in a 1950’s model automobile while they are treated to hilarious retro movie clips on the screen in front of them.   Watch out because the person sitting in the front left seat may be appointed the driver and the others hitchhikers.    It’s all a very fun experience.

It’s only open for lunch and dinner and you’ll find American cuisine with good burgers and shakes but it’s the unique dining experience that keeps guests coming back.  Although the awesome fried pickles always bring me back.  Make sure to add this restaurant to your advance dining reservation list – you can make them 180 days out – because it is very popular and it hard to get at the last moment.   If you’re on the dining plan it counts as a “Table Service” credit.

If you have never had a chance to dine here then this is definitely a must do.  It is a dark dining environment so keep that in mind if you have children that don’t like dark atmospheres.

You’ll find the Sci Fi Dine In Theater Restaurant in Hollywood Studios just around the corner from the Star Tours gift shop.

Is Disney calling?  If you are interested in booking a trip to Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line or any other Disney Park please contact me for booking and personalized travel planning.  I am a travel agent with Pixie Dusted Dreams Travel & Events, the official travel partner of Chip and Company.   My services are always free and I take the hassle out of planning your magical vacation from assisting with anything you may need such as scheduling FastPasses and getting those popular dining reservations.  I offer quick, no-obligation quotes.  You may contact me at [email protected] or find me on Facebook.

Mistletoe and Main Street Snow Disney Christmas Tank Top

Disney Christmas Tank

There’s nothing like walking down a decorated Main Street, while it “snows”. This Mistletoe and Main Street Snow Tank Top is the perfect item for an outfit during a Disney Christmas trip.

You can also get it as a t-shirt, and choose to have it sparkly or not. It’s also available in sizes from infants to grownups! This would be so cute on a onesie! Personally I’d go with sparkly, because I can never turn down glitter!

First Look at the Villains for the Live-Action Kim Possible Movie Coming to Disney Channel

First Look at the Villains for the Live-Action Kim Possible Movie Coming to Disney Channel

Earlier this year it was announced that a live-action Kim Possible Movie would be coming to Disney Channel in 2019 and now we have a look at our villains for the film thanks to Entertainment Weekly! (Cue maniacal laugh track, Muah hahaha)

Our favorite teen-spirited, crime fighting heroine is back and ready to kick some butt! Kim Possible (Sadie Stanley) and Ron Stoppable (Sean Giambrone) will be facing their dastardly foes, Dr. Drakken (Todd Stashwick) and Shego (Taylor Ortega) as the main villains of the film. Kim and Ron will also be fighting other trouble makers from the animated series, such as Professor Dementor (Patton Oswalt).

Take a look at Sadie Stanley dressed as Kim Possible for the Disney Channel Original Movie. We’d say she fits the bill, and we can’t wait to see her crime fighting moves on screen in 2019. You can also check out the trailer for the Kim Possible Movie HERE.

But what is a hero without their villains?

Those with a keen eye may have noticed Dr. Drakken is a little less blue than he was in the animated series. Co-directors Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky did this intentionally. “It’s like he’s got a blue infection within,” Lipovsky says of the new Drakken. “It’s like some experiment or some dastardly plan went wrong years ago and now he’s got this side effect where he’s got a bluish hue.”

As for his more green-hued assistant Shego, she still rocks a green and black jumpsuit, but with some noticeable changes to the suit.  “Shego is one of the funniest characters from the original show, but she’s also incredibly tough. We had to find someone who could be hilarious and pull off the eye rolls and nail filing that Shego’s known for, while still being physically threatening.” says co-director Adam B. Stein. “Todd’s really tall. [In casting], Taylor was the only one who could push him around with just her presence.”

The co-director also had a comment on Shego’s new look: “When we looked at live-action versions of the original costume, it felt a bit like pajamas.” Stein says.

Take a look at Dr. Drakken and Shego’s full look below.

I would say these two look positively evil and ready to take over the world! The real question is will Kim save the day? Or will Dr. Drakken and Shego get away?

New Giraffe Calf at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Needs A Name

New Giraffe Calf at Disney's Animal Kingdom Needs A Name

Disney’s Animal Kingdom needs your help! In October an adorable female Masai giraffe calf was born but there’s one problem… she doesn’t have a name yet!

New Giraffe Calf at Disney's Animal Kingdom Needs A Name

The proud parents, Kenya and George, were paired together as a part of the Species Survival Plan by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The team at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums oversees the responsible breeding of endangered or threatened species.

This new calf will be joining the rest of the giraffe family, including 4-month-old baby giraffe Aella, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and will be spotted in the Savanna portion of the Kilomanjaro Safari before the end of the year. We can’t wait to see this soon-to-be named giraffe calf up and about in the habitat.

See the potential name list for the not-yet-named giraffe calf in the video below!

YouTube player

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Cast Members are asking for Disney guests and fans to help them chose a name for the calf. The choices are:

  • Dafina (Treasure)
  • Milima (Mountain)
  • Amira (Princess)
  • Naima (Graceful)

These lovely names are based off words in Swahili, much like the other animals who are named at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. They all sound so great, I wonder which one will win!

You can cast your vote HERE.

New Giraffe Calf at Disney's Animal Kingdom Needs A Name

Disney is all for helping with animal conservation and these births are very exciting results towards this effort. Masai giraffes are considered a vulnerable species due to high poaching and habitat loss. They can primarily be found in Tanzania and Kenya. It is speculated that there are approximately 32,000 Masai giraffes in the wild.

Disney plans to share the results of the name choice relatively soon so be sure to cast your vote before it’s too late. You can do so by visiting this link, CLICK HERE, and clicking on the image with your name choice.

Congratulations to Kenya and George, and the entire cast at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, on the birth of this beautiful baby girl!
