D23 Presents “The Nightmare Before Christmas” Panel At Comic-Con 2018

Nightmare Before Christmas

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club is bringing Halloweentown to the San Diego Convention Center during Comic-Con San Diego 2018. Attendees will enjoy a very special first-ever panel called “25 Years of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas with D23: The Official Disney Fan Club” and will be presented Saturday, July 21, from 7:45 p.m.-8:45 p.m. in Room 6BCF.

D23 pulls the curtain back on the classic stop-motion Halloween (and Christmas!) favorite, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, with a behind-the-scenes retrospective panel featuring the team that brought the movie to life 25 years ago, including Henry Selick (Director), Kelly Asbury (Art Director), Edie Ichioka (Editor), and Anthony Scott (Animator).

The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the “real world.” When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life — he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. But Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry.

Disney Channel's "Bug Juice: My Adventures At Camp" To Premiere July 16th

Disney Channel’s summer docu-series “Bug Juice: My Adventures at Camp” debuts on Monday, July 16th (7:30-8:00pm EDT). This unscripted show features today’s generation of kids. It is complete with animated emoticons, “boomerang” shots and on-screen memes punctuating the summertime adventures. The 16-part series chronicles the outdoor fun, team activities, new friendships and the experience of being away from home for a new generation of kids at the popular Camp Waziyatah in Waterford, Maine.

Producers returned to the series original location (1998) to film. They showcase all of the fun activities as well as the challenges the campers face. That includes trying to fit in, being homesick and the ups and downs of friendship. Through it all, viewers see the camper’s resilience and how they each come into their own through a summer of fun.

“Bug Juice: My Adventure at Camp” is produced by Evolution Media who created and produced the original version of series. Evolution Media has also been in charge of other popular unscripted kids content for Disney Channel. That includes “Movie Surfers,” “Totally in Tune” and “Totally Hoops.” This show is executive produced by Douglas Ross, Alex Baskin, Tina Gazzero Clapp and Toni Gallagher. Ross, Clapp and Gallagher were all involved in the production of the original series, which premiered on February 28, 1998, and ran for three seasons. Ross is also currently executive producer of E!’s “Botched” and Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” and its spinoff “Vanderpump Rules,” as well as the franchise that started it all, “The Real Housewives of Orange County.”

This show will feature clips from films such as Despicable Me, Jurassic World and even Harry Potter. Water screens in the lagoon will provide the backdrop for the projections.

Guests at Universal Orlando Resort can now catch a preview during one of the park’s technical rehearsals. These rehearsals are a run through of the show. A limited number of guests can preview the show while the finishing touches are being completed. These previews are unscheduled and some of the features of the show may not be operational. Slinky Dog Dash Complimentary Return Pass

Slinky Dog Dash complimentary return pass

Did you know that if your little one doesn’t meet the height requirement for Slinky Dog Dash, they can get a complimentary pass to come back and ride when they are tall enough? Pretty cool, huh? Thanks to Whitney @momdisneyrunrepeat we found out this cool little secret.

Slinky Dog Dash Complimentary Return PassSlinky Dog Dash Complimentary Return Pass

To get the complimentary return pass, it’s simple! All a parent needs to do is just walk their little one up to the entrance of the ride and let the Cast Member know you would like a Dash Pass for your child. Then, the Cast Member will “officially” measure the child at the game piece (to make sure they are shorter than 38 inches) and hand the child the special Dash Pass. Once the child reaches the magical 38 inches tall, that pass entitles them an automatic fastpass with their family. Awesome!

Andy’s assembled his Mega Coaster Play Kit—and Slinky Dog is gonna take you on a wild, toy-filled adventure.

Get a glimpse of everything Toy Story Land has to offer as you stretch Slinky Dog’s coils to the limit across Andy’s backyard! Come along for a roller-coaster-style ride as he bends and twists and stretches his way all throughout this new land.

Make no mistake, it’s a wacky attraction the family is sure to enjoy!

Thanks again to Whitney @momdisneyrunrepeat!

Keri Russell Joins Cast of ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

Keri Russell Joins Cast of 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

There has been some talks of Keri Russell joining the cast of the next Star Wars movie. According to Variety, the ‘Felicity’ star is in early talks with writer and director J. J. Abrams. Russel and Abrams also worked together in ‘Mission Impossible III’ back in 2006.

Russell’s previous roles in FX’s ‘The Americans’, ‘Mission Impossible’, and ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’, has shown her ability to perform action fight scenes. Her roles in the upcoming Star Wars film will have action-heavy fight scenes.

Although Abrams and Lucasfilm execs have met with numerous actresses for this particular role, Russell seems like the favorite so far. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver are all expected to return.

Filming begins at the of the month and is due to release December 20, 2019.

Original Emporium Cast Member Receives Homecoming After 20 Years

Original Emporium Cast Member Receives Homecoming After 20 Years

Kay Wittmack, a 96 year old former cast member returned to Disneyland Resort for the first time in 23 years. She was helped by her niece, current cast member Susan Hibbert, who works in Fantasyland. Hearing her aunt retell her adventures as one of the resort’s original cast members is always a favorite of Susan’s. Kay worked at the Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A. from 1955-1958. The Emporium was actually operated by a separate company until the early 60s.

Susan, along with Guest Relations cast member J’Amy Pacheco, worked together to make Kay’s return to Disneyland as special as possible. They arranged for Kay to meet with Mickey Mouse and she was also able to tour Walt Disney’s apartment that sits atop the fire station. Kay’s favorite attraction, “it’s a small world”, was on the agenda as well. Kay was even recognized during the daily flag retreat ceremony in Town Square as she is a World War II veteran.

Kay was able to visit the Emporium on her trip. The current cast members there were very excited to see Kay and hear about her time working there, especially when Walt Disney himself would stop by for a visit. ““He always came out and said hello to everybody,” Kay said. She also noted how much the resort has grown, and that it “feels wonderful.”

Susan is proud to carry on her aunt’s legacy at the Disneyland Resort. “She’s always been so special to me,” Susan said. “Making magic is something I adore doing every day, and I know that when I train [cast], I’m passing that legacy on.”

Ant Man and The Wasp Visual Artists and Technicians are the Real Superheroes!

Ant Man and The Wasp visual artists and technicians

Have you seen Ant Man and The Wasp yet?  Thanks to the talented Ant Man and The Wasp visual artists and technicians, shrinking to sub-atomic size, visiting the Quantum Realm and riding atop flying insects were made possible for Marvel’s tiniest heroes. These real superstars, the visual artists and technicians, were under the guidance of Stephane Ceretti, visual effects supervisor.

Ceretti has had many adventures with Marvel Studios, beginning as second unit supervisor on the shoot of Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger. He went on to work again as a second unit supervisor on Marvel Studios’ Thor: The Dark World, before becoming visual effects supervisor on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, for which he garnered Academy Award®, BAFTA and Visual Effects Society Award nominations. He then tackled Doctor Strange, again receiving Academy Award, BAFTA and Visual Effects Society Award nominations for his visually innovative work.

For Ant-Man and The Wasp, Ceretti says they tried to be a bit more playful with the change-of-scale effects. “We were just trying to really mix it and play with it,” he says. “There are lots of different scales for Ant-Man in the film, way more than we’ve seen before.”

Thanks to a collaboration with Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) visual effects supervisor Russell Earl and the ILM team, one of the tools that Ceretti and the ILM VFX team used in Ant-Man and The Wasp was BlockParty, a procedural rigging system from Lucasfilm’s award-winning special effects division. It’s been used in hundreds of feature films, helping characters from Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Studios come to life onscreen. These include such characters as the “digital” versions of the Avengers; K-2SO, the droid voiced by Alan Tudyk in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

In recognition of this innovation, ILM received its 31st Scientific and Technical Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences earlier this year. BlockParty streamlines the rigging process through a comprehensive connection framework, a novel graphical user interface and volumetric rig transfer, which has enabled ILM to build richly detailed and unique creatures while greatly improving artist productivity. Receiving the award were Jason Smith and Jeff White, for the original design, and Rachel Rose and Mike Jutan, for the architecture and engineering.

Jutan, an R&D Engineer at ILM, explains that BlockParty is a tool that 3-D artists utilize to develop the bone structure that exists within 3-D characters. “To essentially make them ‘animate-able,’” he says. And he’s not just referring to ‘living’ characters, either—BlockParty was also used on the spaceships in Rogue One, such as the X-Wing Fighters. “These [X-Wings] go through the same standard process as a creature character goes through,” he says, “even though this is a metallic, non-organic object. If it needs to move, and if it needs to animate, it’s still done in the same way.”

Rose, Lucasfilm R&D Supervisor, details, “We worked very closely together as engineers, architecting a system that would allow artists to build a wide range of amazing rigs, reuse work that had already been done on other rigs, and focus more of their time on the art of rigging than on the technical complexities of the process; but we also made sure to build a solidly-engineered system that would be able to grow over time and support the ever-changing rigging needs at ILM.”

“There have been a lot of interesting uses of BlockParty over many years,” Jutan points out. “One memorable film example is The Avengers—there are lots and lots of interesting characters in there: You have the Chitauri aliens, and you have the Leviathan alien ship that flies through and destroys all those buildings in New York and has those metallic flipper things on the side. And then you have Mark Ruffalo turning into the Hulk, which is a fully digital character, motion-captured by Mark with a BlockParty rig.”

BlockParty was also utilized in the scene where Hulk chases Black Widow, played by Scarlet Johansson, and swipes her off to the side. There’s a split second where the special effects team switches from Johansson over to her “digital double”—a digitized version of her—which relies heavily on BlockParty, which enables digital characters to have lifelike movements.

For Ant-Man and The Wasp, BlockParty was used to rig the digital (double) versions of both Ant-Man and The Wasp characters, such as when the heroes shrink down into the Quantum Realm.

“Marvel Studios films are meant to take you to worlds you’ve never seen before,” says Kevin Feige, producer and President, Marvel Studios. “That’s what we deliver on all of our movies from Guardians of the Galaxy to Captain America: Civil War. Ant-Man, in particular, when you got down to the micro realm and then go into the Quantum Realm, is not dissimilar to the dimensions we explored in Doctor Strange. I think global audiences like to experience the unique and unexpected.”

“One of the really satisfying things about my work on BlockParty is that it is used all of the time,” Rose says. “Anything that moves needs a rig. And BlockParty is flexible enough to be able to build every rig—something that we only dreamed would be possible when we started the project.”

For Rose, receiving the Sci-Tech award was an amazing honor. “The BlockParty project was such a great project to work on because of the fun and interesting technical challenges as well as the wonderful team that was assembled to work on it,” she says. “Having the opportunity to be recognized for something you love so much alongside others who you truly enjoy working with was a dream-come-true.”

To see the work of these talented men and women, make sure you check out Ant Man and The Wasp, now in theaters!
