Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ Gets Off to a Roaring Start at the Box Office

The Lion King is set to reign over the box office as it debuts around the world this weekend. The film posted a huge $23 million in Thursday evening previews at the domestic box office, where it opens in over 4,700 theaters.

Internationally, the film opens in most major territories this weekend after rolling out in China on July 12 with a powerful $54.1 million debut. Over the last week, that has risen to $76.6 million, and combined with the first two days of play in newly opened territories, the international gross through July 19 is an estimated $130.5 million. It was the second biggest industry opening day ever in Brazil and the second-biggest opening day for a Walt Disney Studios live-action film in France (in both cases, behind only Avengers: Endgame), and the biggest opening day for a Disney-branded live-action film of all time in Australia and Korea. In Russia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, it was the third biggest opening day of all time. It was the second-biggest opening day of the year (also behind only Avengers: Endgame) in several markets, including France, Germany, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.

Utilizing pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring treasured characters to life in a whole new way, Disney’s The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau, journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.

Critics Vote Disney Cruise Line The Best

When it comes to vacationing, Disney has been the way to go for families around the world. Critics have chosen the Disney Cruise Line as the top cruise line in not one, but three categories!

At this year’s Cruiser’s Choice Destination Awards, Disney Cruise Line snagged the “Top Cruise Line in the Eastern Caribbean, Bahamas, and Bermuda”. Next, Disney won the “Top Cruise Line in the Western Caribbean and Riviera Maya”. Last, Disney Cruise Line got, for the fourth year in a row, the “Top Cruise Line Private Island”. Way to go, Disney!

Critics from the Cruiser’s Choice website all agree that a Disney cruise is an experience for all ages. Cruiser’s Choice is a website with over 300,00 reviews that are all based on first hand travel experience. The fact that a Disney cruise is a consistent front runner, really shows that guests of the cruise line really enjoy their stay.

The hardworking cast members and crew members are making magic on the seas daily. Their dedication shows that they care about making every voyage a memorable one.

Let’s not forget, Disney’s exclusive private island, Castaway Cay. This island is just for guests of the cruise. Castaway Cay is located in the Bahamas and welcomes guests to crystal clear waters and white-sand beaches.

With plenty of activities for children and much needed relaxation for adults, Disney Cruise Line is the top choice!

Star Wars Brings New Galactic Experiences to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Mark your calendars for August 29, the day we have all been waiting for. Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be making its grand opening inviting all of you rebels to the land of Batuu, where your adventure awaits. Starting with the Black Spire outpost where you can suit up for your mission, or search for rare artifacts at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. The highly anticipated Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is where you will take control of the iconic starship, as you blast off into hyperspace. While you venture out of the outer rim there are many other Star Wars interactive experiences that encompass the entire Star Wars Saga throughout the park.

Star Wars Launch Bay is where you can meet your favorite characters. If you are an imperial at heart you can meet Darth Vader himself who will be in command instead of Kylo Ren. And if you are part of the Alliance make sure to check in with Chewbacca and BB-8. There is a “Meet your Makers” short and, Star Wars memorabilia, artifacts and, merchandise.

Star Wars a Galaxy Far, Far Away will be at Center stage showcasing some of the most memorable moments of the Saga, with effects, snippets and, even some of your favorite characters will journey to the stage for a display you won’t want to miss, luckily the show debuts a few times a day.

Jedi Training: Trials of the temple is where younglings will be lead to through the time-honored Jedi Temple training. Here they will be tested and trained to use the force and find out if they have what it takes to stand up against the villains of the dark side.

Star Tours— The Adventure Continues will launch you through the galaxy to lands far away, through a gripping motion-simulator ride. It will take you on missions throughout many of the Star Wars films. Be sure to make it your mission even if you have accepted this challenge before. You might find yourself on a new quest. Newest additions to the adventures are scenes and characters from Star Wars The Force Awakens and, The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular— Be right in the center of it all with this action-packed nighttime show that will thrill rebels and imperials alike. “The force is strong with” this display of lasers, pyrotechnics, lights and, out of this world projection technology, sure enough, to astonish everyone in the universe.

Pure Imagination and POW! Entertainment Creating ‘The Amazing Stan’ Show To Honor Stan Lee.

According to Deadline, “Pure Imagination Studios and POW! Entertainment have partnered on the project which envisions the world as it would be seen through the eyes of Lee as a modern-day youngster. The character is a “constant dreamer” and he and his friends “learn to take risks, explore new ideas, and never ever give up.”

Scott Peterson (Phineas and Ferb) is writing and developing the show and has partnered with Pure Imagination’s Chief Content Officer, John P. Roberts, and Sanjee Gupta to bring their idea to life.

“It is an honor to help carry on the creative legacy of one of the greatest storytellers that pop culture has ever known by introducing an original animated adventure series featuring a new cast of characters for kids and adults to connect with,” Roberts said. “Stan Lee turned his childhood daydreams into a universe that features superheroes that have resonated with generations of all ages and cultures. Now his millions of fans can look forward to seeing him appear as an animated version of his younger self for the very first time.”

Pure Imagination and POW! Entertainment Creating 'The Amazing Stan' Show To Honor Stan Lee

Executive producers for the series include John P. Roberts (Pure Imagination’s Chief Content Officer), Joshua Wexler (CEO of PI Studios), Gill Champion (President, Director and CEO of Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment), and Bob Sabouni (Chief Marketing Officer of POW! Entertainment).

“Stan had the uncanny ability to see the world with a childlike imagination,” Champion said. “For example, an office building becomes a castle, while the streets below form a moat protecting the inhabitants inside. It takes a very special creative team to capture the story of a young Stan and the birth of his unique creations – we’re thrilled to work with Pure Imagination Studios and its team of creators and collaborators to tell this remarkable story and share this amazing ride with his legion of fans.”

Before Lee’s passing, Roberts and Gupta shared their vision with Stan. Stan gave them his blessing and POW! Entertainment has moved forward with this passion project to honor the now late Stan Lee and his decades worth of work and inspiration. A 2-minute preview for The Amazing Stan will be presented during the “A Celebration of Stan Lee’s Life and Legacy” panel at San Diego Comic Con this weekend.

Lion King Scavenger Hunt

The Lion King scavenger hunt is now available at Animal Kingdom! Similar to other scavenger hunts, once a map has been completed a prize is earned. However, we noticed it said on the map a prize could be redeemed whether the map was completed or not. These maps are available for $6.99 before tax at Mombasa Marketplace within the Africa area of Animal Kingdom.

The entire scavenger hunt is within Harambe. There are 10 wooden Lion King Carvings that need to be found. Once complete (or not) you can pick up the magnet prize. Prizes are located at Mombasa Marketplace or at The Outpost Shop in the Oasis. Prize options are between three Lion King-themed magnets.

We don’t want to give away all of the locations for those that love scavenger hunts. Above you’ll find an example of what one of the carvings looks like. This one specifically is Scar. Some of the carvings are more eye level. Most of them are higher up though. This is something to keep in mind if you have little ones. Make sure you check this Lion King scavenger hunt out before September 28, 2019!

Mickey and Friends Band-Tastic Cavalcade Now At Disneyland

There’s so much to celebrate at the Disneyland Resort this summer! With new attractions like Smugglers Run and nighttime entertainment like the Disneyland Forever fireworks, you can’t go wrong!

On July 17th, we said goodbye to Mickey’s Soundsational Parade. In it’s place, and for a limited time, will be Mickey and Friends Band-Tastic Cavalcade! Mickey and the rest of the fab five gang will join the Disneyland Band and some Disney friends that guests rarely see. You will never know who you might see parading down Main Street! The live music of the Disneyland Band will surely have you dancing and clapping along with all your Disney pals!

Make sure you grab a spot on Main Street, because Mickey and Friends Band-Tastic Cavalcade will be a limited time experience! It’s run will run until August 1st.

Then, on August 2nd, we welcome back the nighttime spectacular, the Main Street Electrical Parade! Once night falls, this classic parade will light up Main Street in a whimsical frenzy of music and sparkling lights.

Make sure you join Mickey and the Disneyland Band for this fun and musical procession that guests are sure to love!

Protect The Pride Campaign In Animal Kingdom

Disney has really gone all out to celebrate the release of The Lion King. They initiated the Protect the Pride campaign as part of this celebration. Unfortunately, since the original release of The Lion King 25 years ago, the world has lost half of the lion population in Africa. Currently, only 20,000 remain in the wild. Disney is utilizing the release of the new version of The Lion King to increase conservation awareness. They have teamed up with the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund. The goal is to double the current lion population in Africa by 2050. Currently, the Disney Conservation Fund has donated $1.5 million and is now encouraging guests to help double that to $3 million. It is easy to become involved with conservation efforts at Animal Kingdom. There are also many ways to celebrate The Lion King as well! Disney invited us out to experience firsthand the many ways to celebrate lions and The Lion King.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

One of the easiest ways to be involved in the Protect the Pride campaign in Animal Kingdom is taking a ride on safari! From July 19 until July 25, for every person that goes on Kilimanjaro Safaris, $2 will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Network. The donation will be geared to help the Lion Recovery Fund’s mission of doubling the number of lions in Africa by 2050. One tip for your best chance to see the lions is to take a ride in the morning when the park first opens or in the evening while the sun is setting. We had a chance to hop on the first safari truck on the reserve and did see the lions!

Animation Experience at Rafiki’s Planet Watch

The celebration of The Lion King continues over at Rafiki’s Planet Watch. This area of the park has recently re-opened and now features The Animation Experience.

Here you will learn how to draw one of six Lion King movie characters. This experience has an educational twist. While we were partaking in the experience, we actually learned a few facts about lions. My personal favorite was about their night vision. We learned the undereye area of lions is light in color. We drew in Simba’s eyes as we learned this fact. This helps to magnify their night time vision allowing them to hunt easier. Since they can hunt at night, it allows them to remain hidden from prey. The Animation Experience does have both Standby and Fastpass options available. There are many times to draw during the day, and the characters will change throughout the day. When you are not drawing, there are many animals that call Rafiki’s Planet Watch home. The Animal Hospital is also located here so you may get a glimpse of an animal receiving medical care.

We have previously covered some of the fun Lion King-themed snacks found at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. These items are still available in various areas of the park. Most recently we were able to try the Simba Ice Cream Sandwich. It consists of two chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream in between. On top of the cookie is a picture of Simba where he has a chocolate mane. A chocolate tail is also on the ice cream sandwich. This snack is available for $6.99 before tax and is snack eligible on the Disney Dining Plan.

Lion King Plush

Located at both Disney Stores and U.S. Disney Parks, are these cute Simba and Nala plush toys. These plush lions were designed to continue to help the Lion Recovery Fund double the number of lions in Africa by 2050. Specifically, 40,000 of these plush lions were made representing the number of lions that Disney and the Lion Recovery Fund are trying to ensure a future for. When purchased $5 of the plush sale will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Network in support of the Lion Recovery Fund’s efforts. Purchasing this plush lion is a great and easy way to participate in the Protect the Pride campaign.

Even more Lion King fun can be found within the Africa section of Animal Kingdom. From now until September 20, 2019, there is the opportunity to participate in a Lion King scavenger hunt. Located all ten carved characters around the Africa section of the park for a cool magnet prize. Even with an incomplete map, a prize will still be given to you. The scavenger hunt costs $6.99 before tax and one magnet will be awarded per map. We chose the one with Mufasa and Simba. They are all beautiful though so it was hard to pick!

During our lunch experience, we had to the opportunity to get a sneak peek of the desserts that will be served at Circle Of Flavors. This is a future dining experience coming to Animal Kingdom. This will be Animal Kingdom’s first progressive dining experience. If the desserts are any indication, this event will be amazing. Personally, we loved the brownie pot de creme whiskey caramel the most. We learned there will be a VR (virtual reality) experience at this event. With this experience, you will enter a pride of lions like never before! This event will run on Wednesdays through the summer starting July 24.

Final Thoughts

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is an amazing park already. With all of these Lion King celebrations, it’s even better than before! We really love how the conservation of lions is easily intertwined into the experiences. We learned so much about the importance of lion population recovery. It’s so exciting to see Disney take a huge step to assist the Lion Recovery Fund to double the population of African Lions by 2050. When lions are taken care of, so are the surrounding ecosystems. Walt Disney World Bartender Fired Over CBD Oil

A former Walt Disney World bartender claims she was fired over CBD oil she purchased at a local grocery store for her foot pain.

Kathy Talafous stated that she was carrying the CBD oil on her person when she was visiting the park with her family. She was off the clock at this time.

Talafous says, “I bought this over the counter at Lucky’s and I didn’t do anything wrong. I went into a store. I bought it. I paid $50 for it.”

Talafous purchased the oil to deal with foot pain and said it was the type with little to no THC.

Security stopped her at the gate of Walt Disney World’s Epcot just three days before a South Carolina grandmother was arrested for attempting to bring CBD oil into the Magic Kingdom.

During a routine search, the security officer found the CBD balm in Talafous’ purse.

She feels as if she was made out to look like a drug addict at Epcot. “They said, ‘You can’t have this, it’s illegal.’ I said, ‘what do you mean it’s illegal?’”

According to WESH, Talafous shared her documents from the Sheriff’s Office. One of the documents says that her oil was not tested, but Disney’s reports state that her oil was positive for THC.

When Talafous showed up for her next shift at work, she was notified of her suspension. She was just fired this week.

“Now here I am, losing my job because of something I bought at a supermarket,” Talafous states.

Disney has yet to comment on this matter.

Disney Rumored To Make Live-Action ‘Treasure Planet‘. With Walt Disney Pictures cranking out live-action after live-action remake, the list of potential films seems to grow every day.

Disney’s Live-Action remakes of films such as Cinderella, Aladdin, Maleficent, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and more, have been performing well enough in theaters that the trend of remaking Disney Classics is far from over. Recently Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, and Chip & Dale, have been confirmed by Disney to be on the way back to the big screen. Disney is also looking to remake some films that will be exclusively available on their new streaming service, Disney+, such as Lady and the Tramp.

Of the many choices Disney has to choose from their past projects, it seems Disney may be shifting their focus to more underrated or fan-favored films such as: Hercules, Atlantis, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and an exciting venture of remaking a live-action version of Treasure Planet.

Cinematically speaking, Treasure Planet has the potential to be visually stunning due to the abilities of CGI compared to the technology that was available during the films original release in 2002. Despite the film receiving excellent reviews by critics, Treasure Planet performed very poorly in theaters, having only brought in $38 Million when production costs exceeded $140 Million.

Some speculation about the films pathetic performance in theaters seem to stem from the release date of the film and the age of the protagonist, Jim Hawkins. In the book “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson, Jim was a child, not a broody teenager as portrayed in the film, which seemed to deter parents from allowing their youngster to see the film back in ’02. Parents seemed to be drawn to bring their families to films such as Warner Brothers Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Disney’s very own Santa Clause II.

Statistically speaking, it was a poor decision by the studio to release the film so close to highly anticipated sequels around the holiday season when audiences felt Treasure Planet had much more of a “summer movie” feel. Another reason for the lack in performance is the possibility that the movie simply was ahead of its time. With a spike in steampunk and fantasy related content becoming very popular in mainstream media now-a-days and with fans being able to bring their families to the theater to see one of their favorite film while growing up means Treasure Planet could be a box office smash for Disney in the 2020’s.

For those who may not remember Treasure Planet, a synopsis of the film may give you an insight on how incredible the story truly was and why the film is still garnishing new fans nearly 20 years later. “The legendary “loot of a thousand worlds” inspires an intergalactic treasure hunt when 15-year-old Jim Hawkins stumbles upon a map to the greatest pirate trove in the universe. Based on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told – Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island”- this film follows Jim’s fantastic journey across a parallel universe as a cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon.”

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland Park Takes It's Millionth Rider — Since the opening of *Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge* at the end of May of this year. Many people have stepped foot through the planet *Batuu*. So many in fact that one of the main attractions just reached a major milestone. Within less than two months *The Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run* has hosted more than a million guests who were looking to have their own Star Wars adventure. To celebrate the millionth ride across the universe, the Disneyland crew sprinkled some of their Disney magic to make it extra special for the Ridgeway family. The Ridgeway family consists of Becky, her husband Roger, and her two sons Logan and Johnathan.

Some of the original cast members who were there when the ride first opened came to celebrate it’s millionth guests. They even gave the family their own stuffed Porgs to take home. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland Park Takes It's Millionth Rider

The family also got another surprise when special guest, Chewbacca came to hang out with the family in the ship’s hold and lounge. Chewie even treated them to Blue and Green milk as a toast for them successfully guiding the Millennium Falcon across the galaxy.

While you may not be the lucky millionth rider if you still want be a part of Hondo Ohnaka’s flight crew you can visit Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

Get Your Groove On With The DescenDANCE Party Coming Soon To Disney Springs

Do you love Disney Channel’s Descendants? With the release of Descendants 3 right around the corner, Walt Disney World is celebrating the release with a limited time dance party for all fans and VK’s (that’s Villian’s Kids for the unknowing). Disney Springs at Walt Disney World will be hosting a DescenDANCE party at the Marketplace Stage on July 26, 2019 – August 11, 2019. Get your dancing shoes ready as there will be some villainously sweet music, as well as some cool photo ops, and you may just catch an on-screen shout-out from some of the cast of the movie.

Disney Springs is not the only place you can catch the DescenDANCE party. It will move over to the Magic Kingdom during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, offered select nights, on August 16, 2019, and take over Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe for the event. Everyone is sure to have a wicked good time!

Make sure you set your DVR’s on August 2 at 8 pm to see the return of your favorite VK’s in the Disney Channel premiere of “Descendants 3”!
