In 2018, the Walt Disney Company announced its intention to stop using small plastic toiletry bottles (shampoo, conditioner, etc.) in its resorts and on its cruise ships. The declaration was of no surprise to Disney guests who were already experiencing the switch to paper straws in an attempt to keep plastic out of the oceans. It also appears that the promise was well-timed for the Disneyland resorts; this is in light of a new law banning California hotels from giving guests plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, or soap.

On Wednesday, Governor Gavin Newsom made the announcement that the law had already been signed. It will begin to take effect in 2023 for hotels with more than 50 rooms (therefore any Disney resorts), and in 2024 for those with less than 50. The fine for first-time offenders after that date is $500, but if they’re found non-compliant a second time it’s raised to $2000.

Disney’s consistent dedication to environmental efforts have paved the way for this change. However, the stakes have been raised with a deadline placed firmly before them. It looks like refillable and reusable containers are in the cards for all the Disney resorts. This means tourists will no longer be able to stash those little ”souvenirs” in their suitcases. But not to fear, they will always have the opportunity to purchase reusable shopping bags at the Disney merchandise locations for a small fee. Those will probably get more use anyway, as well as reduce plastic waste!

Change is coming, and that’s not always bad. This is another opportunity for the Walt Disney Company to demonstrate their ability to satisfy both guests and nature in one swoop. We are sure that the resorts will feel every bit as luxurious once the switch happens!
