“Disney has a rich history in nonfiction storytelling that dates back to the 1940s,” said Ricky Strauss, president, content & marketing, Disney+ during a showcase with the International Documentary Association. “The projects announced and showcased here today reflect Disney+’s commitment to building on Walt’s storytelling ethos and core values of creativity, innovation, and exploration.”

Disney+ kicked off the showcase by unveiling and offering insight into the newly announced projects:

  • Howard,” directed by Don Hahn (“Beauty and the Beast”); “Howard” is the untold story of Howard Ashman, the brilliant lyricist behind Disney classics like “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid” and creator of musicals including “Little Shop of Horrors.”  The film will stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2020.
  • People & Places,” which is produced by Supper Club’s Jason Sterman, Brian McGinn and David Gelb (“13th,” “Amanda Knox,” “Chef’s Table”), relaunches the original Walt Disney documentary short film series from the 1950s and 1960s; “People & Places” will re-launch Walt Disney’s Academy Award-winning series of documentary short films. Following in Walt’s footsteps, the series will focus on real-life stories of extraordinary people and places from around the globe that embody the Disney ethos — all told by a mix of up-and-coming and established filmmakers.
  • National Geographic’s Emmy Award-winning feature documentary “Science Fair” will stream exclusively on the service;
  • An “Untitled Mickey Mouse Documentary” from award-winning producer Morgan Neville (“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” “20 Feet From Stardom”) and director Jeff Malmberg (“Marwencol,” “Shangri-la”); the film will work to decode Mickey’s deeper significance, getting to the core of what his cultural impact says about each of us, and about our world. From Tremolo Productions and Lincoln Square Productions, the film will strive to be the definitive analysis of Mickey as a cultural icon.
  • And “Wolfgang,” directed by Supper Club co-founder David Gelb (“Jiro Dreams of Sushi”). “Wolfgang,”  will be an intimate portrait of the life and work of the original “celebrity chef,” Wolfgang Puck.

Sarah Amos (Vice President, Development & Production, Marvel New Media), Jason Sterman (Supper Club), and Gillian Jacobs also shared insight into original nonfiction stories that complement and explore the 80-year legacy of Marvel including “Marvel’s Hero Project,” which premieres on Disney+ November 12. Director and Producer, Leslie Iwerks (“The Pixar Story,” “Citizen Hearst”) gave the audience a look inside the production process of her highly anticipated documentary series “The Imagineering Story.” The six-hour saga chronicles the 67-year history of Walt Disney Imagineering, a place best described as equal parts artist studio, design center, think tank and innovation laboratory. “The Imagineering Story” will be available to stream on Disney+ launch day.

Each episode follows a new cast of returning alumni as they attempt to pull off a standing-ovation-worthy performance of beloved musicals like “The Sound of Music,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Annie” and more. “Encore!” will stream exclusively on Disney+ starting November 12.

Also present for the showcase was Jeff Goldblum, who executive produces and stars in “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” from National Geographic. Goldblum shared the series’ episode named: “Tattoos” for the audience before giving a peek inside his curious mind. Each episode of the series is centered around something we all love — like sneakers or ice cream — as Jeff pulls the thread on deceptively familiar objects and unravels a wonderful world of astonishing connections, fascinating science and history, amazing people, and a whole lot of surprising big ideas and insights. “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” will also start streaming exclusively on Disney+ November 12.

Universal Studios Hollywood Celebrates “Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” and “Grinchmas,” Beginning Thursday, November 28 through December 29

Universal Studios Hollywood Celebrates "Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” and “Grinchmas,” Beginning Thursday, November 28 through December 29

The whimsical spirit of the holidays transforms Universal Studios Hollywood into a winter wonderland bringing merriment and cheer to families and friends this festive season as the theme park ushers in seasonal favorites, “Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” and “Grinchmas,” beginning Thursday, November 28 and running daily through Sunday, December 29, 2019.

Universal Studios Hollywood

An annual family tradition, “Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” adds holiday warmth and cheer to this beloved land as the quaint town of Hogsmeade village is enchanted with seasonal décor uniquely themed to each of the individual storefronts and a dazzling light projection spectacular brings the iconic Hogwarts™ castle to life.

As night falls on Hogsmeade village, “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts™ Castle” illuminates Hogwarts™ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with colorful imagery and impressive dimensional animations that dance across Hogwarts castle in tandem to a musical arrangement from the Harry Potter movies.

Musical performances from the a cappella Frog Choir, comprised of Hogwarts students and their giant throaty frogs, entertain guests with their harmonized holiday-themed songs and fill the land with holiday cheer.

In time for the holiday season, a wide selection of custom-made Christmas ornaments created especially for “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” will be available. Collectibles include a decorative Hogwarts castle snow globe, Hogwarts crest and mascot ornaments representing each of the four houses, wizard card ornaments, unique tree topper and house pennant garland.

Holiday-themed fare and hot Butterbeer further complement the overall experience.

Grinchmas

An all-new state-of-the-art, topsy-turvy “Grinchmas” tree, twisting and turning over 55 feet in height and adorned with hundreds of ornaments and thousands of white and multi-colored LED lights choreographed to music, brightens the merry “Grinchmas” Who-lebration. Dazzling “Grinchmas” tree lighting ceremonies that take place every evening, accompanied by a snowfall flurry, bring this annual favorite to life, creating a festival of fun fit for The Grinch, his faithful dog Max and a roster of Who-ville Whos.

Spirited holiday décor and festive whimsy will also permeate throughout the theme park, bringing a crew of very merry and mischievous Minions to “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” and “Super Silly Fun Land” to gleefully spread Christmas cheer to visitors of all ages.

Universal CityWalk’s spectacular 40-foot tall Christmas tree will once again glisten with 200,000 LED icicles choreographed to the lights and sounds of the season as the magic of the holidays comes to life in the “5 Towers” outdoor plaza along with a slate of free concert performances and an eclectic ensemble of talented street performers.

CityWalk’s iconic, dancing water fountain with over 230 individual power jets will continue to mesmerize guests when it projects streams of choreographed water into the air complemented by red and green LED lights and an array of holiday-themed music.

The holidays at Universal Studios Hollywood is included in the price of theme park admission.

‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ Reigns Over Domestic Box Office on Opening Weekend

'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' Reigns Over Domestic Box Office on Opening Weekend

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil‘ Reigns Over Domestic Box Office on Opening Weekend. Disney’s latest live-action film led the box office this weekend in theaters, earning more than: Joker (Warner Bros.), Zombieland: Double Tap (Columbia Pictures), The Addams Family (MGM) and Gemini Man (Skydance).

Collider shared the box office earnings for the weekend and yet again Disney dominated the theaters over the competition. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil earned $36 Million over the course of it’s opening weekend in the domestic box office, and has brought in another $117 internationally, bringing the global box office earnings to $153 Million.

Though that sounds like a ton of money, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil missed the predicted $50 Million mark by $12 Million dollars and has yet to earn back the cost of production. The Maleficent sequel cost an estimated $185 Million to create, meaning the film still needs to bring in another $32 Million to break even with production costs before making a profit. More than likely, the film will recoup costs within the next few weeks, but the lower than expected earnings is alarming for the studio. For a Disney film, this has been a very low yielding film and several factors may explain the poor performance over the weekend.

Disney has been met with a ton of backlash over the heavy saturation of “live-action remakes” and it appears fans have had enough. Many claiming online their refusal to attend any more live-action screenings and imploring Disney to return with new content and sought after sequels. Other factors include the date chosen for the films release being in a low profit month for cinema (October), the soon-to-be release of Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+ (which has seen an unprecedented early subscription total), and the high volume of Disney films released in 2019 that seem more appealing to movie goers such as Frozen II and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker later this year. Not to mention, the films release so close to Halloween. Disney likely chose Oct.. 18th to help with the sale of merchandise for the film, including costume pieces, but may have hurt the outcome of the film due to the highly profitable holiday leaving fans without spare cash to attend the film.

Though all of these factors likely had an impact on the films earnings, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is still a stunning feature and shows fans a more in-depth look at one of the most “hate-to-love” villains from a Disney film. You can check out our review of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil by CLICKING HERE.

For those who are not familiar with the premise of the film, here is a spoiler free description for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil:

“Maleficent and her goddaughter, Aurora, begin to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies, and dark new forces at play. Maleficent encounters a conniving queen who hatches a devious plot to destroy the land’s fairies. Hoping to stop her, Maleficent joins forces with a seasoned warrior and a group of outcasts to battle the queen and her powerful army.”

Levi’s joined forces with Lucasfilm to create a special-edition Star Wars collection!

levis

Few things in pop culture have inspired as much fan affection, nostalgia and devotion as the Star Wars™ saga. Since Star Wars: A New Hope debuted in 1977, the legendary space fantasy has occupied a special place in our imaginations, a place fans are eager to revisit when Star Wars: The Rise of The Skywalker hits theaters this December. The beloved story that began over 40 years ago will finally get its long-awaited conclusion. To mark this seminal moment, Levi’s®—a brand known for its own share of fan affection, nostalgia and devotion—has teamed up with Lucasfilm to create a special-edition collection celebrating the epic history of Star Wars.

Coinciding with the release of Star Wars: The Rise of The Skywalker , and centered around the iconic characters from the original Star Wars trilogy, the Star Wars x Levi’s® collection features a range of both classic Levi’s® icons and streetwear-inspired favorites: tees and hoodies as well as Trucker Jackets and jeans in a unique array of washes. Every piece also features iconic elements from the Star Wars galaxy—famous archival graphics of favorite characters and starships from the original films, plus unique co-branding elements like Levi’s® leather patches, buttons, tabs, printed pockets and the famous Levi’s® Batwing logo, all with a Star Wars twist. And of course, what would a Star Wars collection be without instantly recognizable quotes from the films printed or embroidered along backs and sleeves— including “I am your father,” “In a galaxy far, far away….,” and, perhaps best of all, Chewbacca’s immortal “GGWWWRGHH!!!!”

“Lucasfilm and Levi’s® are San Francisco neighbors. When we found out that the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga was coming at the end of 2019, we bundled up our Jedi and headed to Lucasfilm looking for droids. And here’s a barely known, fun fact: Luke Skywalker was wearing Levi’s® in the original trilogy – white Levi’s®! Now it’s our turn to return the compliment with Vader, droids, Chewie and Leia.” – Jonathan Cheung, Senior Vice President of Design Innovation at Levi’s®.

Festive New Holiday Disney Popcorn Buckets That We Absolutely Love

Holiday Disney Popcorn Buckets

Festive New Holiday Disney Popcorn Buckets That We Absolutely Love

By now I am sure everyone knows I am absolutely obsessed with unique Disney popcorn buckets. It looks like there are two more to add to my list, because Hong Kong Disneyland is coming out with 2 new Holiday Disney Popcorn Buckets! I am also hoping we see them at Disneyland and Walt Disney World too!

Holiday Disney Popcorn Buckets

Last year we saw the Santa Alien popcorn bucket across the Disney Parks! This year there is a holiday flannel pajama Alien. This little guy wears a nightcap, with a little pom pom at the end, that matches his pjs perfectly. Just like the other Alien popcorn buckets, the mouth lifts to reveal the tasty treat inside. I could definitely see him coming to Hollywood Studios and Pixar Pier too.

Festive New Holiday Disney Popcorn Buckets That We Absolutely Love

The second popcorn bucket is a light-up Christmas tree! This is one of those buckets that is so perfectly done, you can even use it as a decoration when not using it for popcorn! Mickey stands at the base of the topsy turvy tree holding a beautifully wrapped present. Little lights dapple the tree, with a yellow star topping it off, these are the light-up parts of the bucket! This is the one I really hope we get at Disneyland and Walt Disney World!

Are you hoping to add these Holiday Disney Popcorn Buckets to your collection?
