Walt Disney Studios Selects Accenture Interactive as Innovative Partner of Disney StudioLAB

Walt Disney

Accenture has been appointed by The Walt Disney Studios as a founding member and Innovation Partner of StudioLAB, an initiative dedicated to reimagining, designing and prototyping the entertainment experiences and production capabilities of the future using innovative technologies.

The Walt Disney Studios produces feature films from Disney, including Walt Disney Animation Studios; Pixar Animation Studios; Marvel Studios; and Lucasfilm. It also brings music and stage plays to consumers via The Disney Music Group and Disney Theatrical Group.

Accenture Interactive and its design and innovation unit, Fjord, will play a lead role in helping to establish StudioLAB, as well as define and develop cutting-edge entertainment technology. They will also draw upon the extensive R&D expertise of Accenture Labs to help Disney Studios apply emerging technologies in innovative ways. Initial areas of focus include: immersive entertainment; artificial intelligence; IoT; the future of movie production; and next-generation cinematic platforms.

In addition to collaborating on R&D, Accenture will partner with the Studios to support the operations of the StudioLAB as part of a 3-year agreement. This includes co-crafting the StudioLAB’s charter and governance, physical lab design, and business operations. In a co-located setup, Accenture personnel will work alongside StudioLAB personnel to incubate and prototype new concepts expected to impact the entertainment industry, advancing the way stories are told.

“Accenture Interactive is thrilled to collaborate with the imaginative minds at The Walt Disney Studios on entertainment R&D to reimagine how people experience storytelling,” said Baiju Shah, chief strategist for Accenture Interactive and global lead, Fjord. “Our partnership demonstrates the true purpose of Accenture Interactive – to create truly remarkable experiences. Accenture is uniquely positioned to bring together the full set of diverse skills – from strategy, design and technology innovation, across emerging technologies like immersive entertainment, artificial intelligence, and IoT — needed to run a first-class innovation lab and deliver the next generation of entertainment experiences.”

“As we thought about key partners to deliver our vision for StudioLAB, the decision to collaborate with Accenture Interactive was clear,” said Jamie Voris, CTO of The Walt Disney Studios. “Their ability to combine the design and innovation capabilities of a leading digital agency with the applied R&D capabilities of the Accenture Labs and deep industry expertise in media and entertainment makes them an ideal partner to innovate on the future of entertainment experiences. Technology is an essential component of how we make characters, stories and worlds come alive at Disney, and we’re looking forward to the possibilities of what we can imagine and build together.”

StudioLAB teams will apply emerging technologies to create new entertainment experiences. The StudioLAB environment will also provide a unique space for Accenture to host tours and lead innovation workshops with clients to help inspire them on their own innovation journeys.

Accenture has a 25-year history working with The Walt Disney Company, supporting some of its most innovative initiatives – ranging from myMagic+, Disney Movies Anywhere and Marvel Unlimited to Disney’s Enterprise Cloud Program and advanced marketing analytics at ABC. For this initiative, Accenture Interactive will also tap into support from Accenture’s other main businesses — Accenture Consulting, Accenture Strategy and Accenture Technology – to bring a complete set of transformation skills to co-innovate with The Walt Disney Studios.

And the Next Bachelorette is…..

And the Next Bachelorette is.....

Did you watch this past season of the “Bachelor?” If so, you are well aware of the gut-wrenching finish to the season when Arie  broke off his engagement with Becca and got engaged to the original runner up, Lauren. Now, the humble fan favorite and girl next door from Minnesota returns for a second shot at love, starring on “The Bachelorette,” when it premieres for its 14th at the end of May, on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand. The announcement was made last night on the live “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose” special.

With the help of her family and friends, Becca was able to pick up the pieces and put the focus back on herself, moving forward with her life. It is strong willpower and a firm set of Midwest values that lead Becca to one certain conclusion: She is willing to take another leap of faith to look for her soul mate, the love of her life, again. But this time, it will be on her terms and forever.

Becca Kufrin

Becca was raised by her parents Jill and Steve Kufrin, who provided a consummate example of what a marriage should be. She also looks up to her older sister, Emily, the epitome of confidence and charisma. Her father’s passing when she was 19 was pivotal and made her look at life through a different lens, where she learned to appreciate each day to the fullest. When Becca isn’t making a splash at the boutique public relations agency where she works or planning her next overseas trip, she can be found at home hosting dinner parties for her friends.

Will Becca be ready for another engagement after such a heartwrenching breakup? Or will her past haunt her own journey to find the one?  Becca believes she can find love again – this time, forever!

“The Bachelorette” premieres on Monday, May 28 at 8:00 pm EST.

‘Thor: Ragnarok:’ Behind the Scenes, Interesting Facts, and Easter Eggs!

'Thor: Ragnarok:' Behind the Scenes, Interesting Facts, and Easter Eggs!

“Thor: Ragnarok” is available on DVD as of March 6! Before you run out to purchase it, we wanted to share with you a few previews of the bonus material that is available on the DVD and some interesting facts about the film.

Australian and New Zealand Influence on “Thor: Ragnarok”

Did you know that there was an Australian/New Zealand influence on the space ships in the film? Here is director Taika Waititi discussing this influence along with a variety of additional AU/NZ!

Additionally, here are eight Australia/New Zealand Easter Eggs from “Thor: Ragnarok:”

'Thor: Ragnarok:' Behind the Scenes, Interesting Facts, and Easter Eggs!

  1. The horns on Surtur’s helmet were crafted out of an ancient Australian boomerang that the crew received as a gift while filming in Australia.
  2. The Grandmaster’s henchwoman, Topaz, is played by Rachel House. She has starred in many of Taika Waititi’s projects, including Eagle vs. Shark, Boy, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

  3.  Taika Waititi is a big fan of sketch comedy actor Steven Oliver from Australia’s “Black Comedy” television series and contacted him to be “Cousin Carlo” in a scene with Jeff Goldblum.'Thor: Ragnarok:' Behind the Scenes, Interesting Facts, and Easter Eggs!

  4.   The scene where Valkyrie opens a bottle with her blade is an homage to the Beth Heke character in Once Were Warriors.      'Thor: Ragnarok:' Behind the Scenes, Interesting Facts, and Easter Eggs!
  5. Chris Hemsworth loved Taika Waititi so much he shaved an “N” and a “Z” in the sides of his head for “New Zealand.” (according to Taika, at least)

  6. Interns from a local Aboriginal community created much of the Hulk parade masks & banner props on Sakaar. Several of the interns ended up getting jobs with the art department.

  7. During Hela’s fight sequence against the army of Asgard, she is doubled by the famous New Zealand stuntwoman, Zoe Bell.

  8. The colors for The Grandmaster’s ship, The Commodore, were inspired by the Aboriginal flag, while Valkyrie’s ship colors were modeled on the Maori flag. Many of the space ships in the film were also named after cars from the Australia/New Zealand car company, Holden – Statesman, Commodore, Escort, Kingswood, Torana, etc.

11 Comic Book Easter Eggs from the Thor: Ragnarok Commentary Track with Taika Waititi

  1. The initial Hela costume is loosely based on the comic design and transitions into the iconic version when she returns to Asgard. Her weapons were based on Gorr the God Butcher’s weapons from the “God of Thunder” comic storyline.
  2. Sakaar’s design was taken from Jack Kirby’s artwork. Taika was a fan as a kid and incorporated many shapes and colors from classic comics.
  3. The obedience discs are power inhibitors lifted from the “Planet Hulk” comic storyline.
  4. The designs of many background characters in Sakaar were also lifted directly from Jack Kirby comics.
  5. Traditionally, the Grandmaster in the comics is blue-skinned, but they thought people might tie it back to Jeff Goldblum’s character from “Earth Girls Are Easy.”
  6. The characters of Korg and Miek are from the “Planet Hulk” comic storyline. Taika based Korg’s voice on the Polynesian bouncers in New Zealand, many of whom are extremely polite and don’t want to hurt anyone.
  7. The large wolf, Fenris, is a great ally of Hela’s in the comics.
  8. The mural on the back wall of The Grandmaster’s suite is actual Jack Kirby artwork.
  9. After years of fans asking for it, Thor finally got his helmet in the Sakaarian battle arena.
  10. Odin’s spear, Gungnir, appears in the background of the throne room on Asgard.
  11. Hulk’s Sakaarian wardrobe casual wear is lifted from various Hulk comics.

8 Film Facts from the Thor: Ragnarok Commentary Track with Taika Waititi

  1. The character of Surtur was voiced by Clancy Brown and motion-captured by Taika Waititi.
  2. The Doctor Strange sequence was filmed in London during the Doctor Strange production, 8-9 months prior to principle photography on Thor: Ragnarok.
  3. The synth music was a big part of the world of Sakaar. Mark Mothersbaugh developed the score and pulled together a variety of analog synth music and original pieces from Robert Moog and blended them with Asgardian instrumentals to create a new score.
  4. Taika Waititi designed Valkyrie’s wrist tattoo.
  5. The 3-headed gladiator on Sakaar had his far-left head modeled after Taika Waititi.
  6. The unique lighting design of the battle between Hela and the Valkyries has never been used in a major film before. The sequence was designed by Stu Rutherford, who starred in Waititi’s “What We Do in the Shadows,” and Carlo Van de Roer. The “bullet time” effect of the long shadows is created by a series of strobe lights that surround the actors during the scene while it is shot in slow motion.
  7. Mark Ruffalo wears the classic Patrick Nagel album cover for Duran Duran’s “Rio” when he puts on Tony Stark’s clothes.
  8. The original Norse myth of Ragnarok includes Surtur as taking part in the destruction of Asgard.

Make sure to purchase “Thor: Ragnarok” today! You will not be disappointed!

Disney Commits $100 Million for Children’s Hospitals Around the World

Disney Commits $100 Million for Children's Hospitals Around the World

As part of their philanthropic efforts, The Walt Disney Company has committed to more than $100 million in efforts to bring comfort to children and their families while in hospitals. Disney is working side-by-side with medical teams to add a bit of magic within the walls of hospitals around the world to alleviate boredom and stress during what can be a difficult time.

Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company, today announced an innovative plan to dedicate more than $100 million in company resources, including cash, products and services, to reinvent the patient and family experience in children’s hospitals across the globe. This initiative will roll out over five years, expanding the Company’s rich legacy of supporting children’s hospitals, which dates back to Walt Disney.

“Disney’s timeless stories have touched hearts and lifted spirits for generations, and we believe they can bring comfort to children and families going through a very difficult time,” said Mr. Iger. “Using the powerful combination of our beloved characters and legendary creativity, we’re planning to transform the patient experience in children’s hospitals around the world—creating a personalized and engaging atmosphere that will inspire young patients and ease the stress of a hospital stay.”

Leveraging its renowned “Imagineers”—the global experts in theme park and family entertainment design—the company plans to introduce a rich array of distinctly “Disney” elements into children’s hospitals. Drawing on their decades of creativity, and working with patient care experts, Imagineers will use some of the world’s most iconic characters and stories to weave together many different touchpoints and experiences creating a supportive atmosphere that is personal, warm and entertaining for patients and families during their time at the hospital. Concepts for these elements include:

A new RFID-based system allowing patients to customize their hospital visit by choosing their favorite Disney stories and characters, which will surround them during their stay. The system will also unlock special elements to further personalize and enhance the experience, such as “enchanted” artwork that comes alive.
Themed treatment and patient rooms featuring interactive murals of Disney stories, bed linens and gowns featuring each child’s favorite characters, and personalized in-room entertainment. Additionally, well stocked mobile “play carts” will include Disney-themed games and activities to give families something to do together to help alleviate stress and boredom.
Disney first-run movies and television shows, available both in-room and in themed pop up movie theaters in the hospital, along with other Disney entertainment options.
Disney customer-experience training for doctors, nurses and staff. The renowned Disney Institute, a part of The Walt Disney Company that provides professional development training focused on leadership, employee engagement and high quality service, will create a customized program for healthcare professionals designed to foster a less stressful, patient and family-centric hospital experience.
The first hospital to work with Disney in this comprehensive new approach is Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. As the largest children’s hospital in the United States, recognized as a national leader in pediatric health, Texas Children’s will add valuable insight in collaboration with Disney on these and other new experiences.

“We are honored to be the inaugural hospital to collaborate with Disney on this exciting patient-focused initiative,” said Mark A. Wallace, President and CEO of Texas Children’s Hospital. “Patient care is at the center of our mission, and in addition to providing the highest-quality medical care to children, we strive to make the hospital experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible for every patient and their family. We are looking forward to working with Disney to enhance our efforts in this area.”

Disney is working with a panel of medical experts, including doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, parents and child life professionals from around the world, to advise on the best ways Disney can help hospitals create a more personalized and comforting experience for patients and families.

“Disney stories and characters provide a shared vocabulary between our young patients and their medical team,” said Dr. James B. Fahner, M.D., F.A.A.P Division Chief, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital/Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a member of the panel working with Disney on this initiative. “The magic of Disney restores some childhood innocence during a very difficult time, and also allows us as caregivers to be at our very best. I can’t think of any company that is better suited to lead this type of work than Disney.”

The Company is also expanding its work with children’s wish-granting organizations. In 2017, The Walt Disney Company, through all its affiliated brands, granted more than 10,000 wishes for children facing critical illnesses around the world. Since Disney granted its first wish request in the early 1980s, it has fulfilled more than 120,000 wishes.

This new initiative to reimagine the children’s hospital experience is part of the Company’s “Team of Heroes” community outreach and philanthropy efforts. The Walt Disney Company is dedicated to delivering comfort, happiness and inspiration for families around the world and recognizes it takes a team to make a significant impact.

Lunch and Dinner Menu Changes At Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café In Magic Kingdom

Cosmic Ray's Starlight Café

Guests heading to the Magic Kingdom will notice some changes in the Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café menu in Tomorrowland. Previously the lunch and dinner options have been identical for both meals. It now looks like some menu items are no longer available at both times and separate menus have been created.

It appears the Falafel Burger, Barbecued Pork Sandwich, and Triple Chocolate Cake have been removed completely from both lunch and dinner. The 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken is now only being served at Dinner. New additions include the BBQ Pulled Pork Platter at Lunch, Barbecue Ribs at Dinner, and a new “Sonny Eclipse Dessert” (Cookies and Cream Cheesecake) has appeared.
