Incredibles 2 Claims Biggest Animated Film Opening Weekend Ever

Incredibles 2 Opening Weekend

The Incredibles 2 has been shattering records at the box office this weekend. After the dust settled from the multitude of Pixar fans flocking to theaters, Incredibles 2 can now claim the highest animation debut of all time! The $180 million in domestic ticket sales crushed the projected estimates of  $125 million to $140 million that analysts were originally predicting.

To put this in perspective, Finding Dory was the previous reigning champ with opening weekend ticket sales totaling $135 million in 2016 (not adjusted for inflation). The live-action version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast had a $116 million opening weekend for its debut last year.

In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.

Spaceship Earth LEGO Ideas Set Up for Voting!

Spaceship Earth LEGO

Disney inspired LEGO sets are fun to build, fun to create and fun to collect!  Thanks to LEGO Ideas you can now submit your own creations, like this Spaceship Earth LEGO set!

We recently told you about LEGO Ideas and how you can submit your own creation, get votes and, maybe, have you creation sold and marketed by LEGO.  If you’re not into creating, you can also go and vote for favorites, like this Spaceship Earth set by Russ Cole!

Spaceship Earth LEGO

Not familiar with LEGO Ideas? Here’s the general concept!

  1. Share your ideas for new LEGO sets!  Create an awesome model, take great photos, and write a convincing project description, and people won’t be able to help but support you. Not so fast, though! Before you put two bricks together, check out the Project Guidelines and House Rules to see the types of ideas we allow.
  2. Gather Support—10,000 supporters qualifies your project for review!  Tell everyone you know (and even those you don’t know) to support your project. 10,000 is a big number, but it’s doable if you have a great project and some old-fashioned persistence. The best results come from knowing how to ask for support from the right fan sites, blogs, and online communities.
  3. LEGO Review—the LEGO Review Board chooses which projects become new LEGO sets!  After reaching 10k, your project enters a special phase called the LEGO Review. A review board of set designers and marketing representatives evaluates projects according to our review criteria and hand-picks projects to become new LEGO Ideas sets. We can’t make everything, but every project in review gets a fair shot.
  4. New LEGO Product—our team transforms your design into an actual LEGO product sold around the world!  Projects selected in the LEGO Review go into production. You give input to our professional LEGO designers, whose job it is to create the final set based on your project. Once complete, it goes to the factory, then it’s shipped around the world and released for sale. You’re featured in set materials, receive a royalty on sales, and are recognized as the product creator. Your supporters can now own the LEGO set they helped make happen on LEGO Ideas.

You’ll want to check out full rules and policies before you submit a creation!

So head over to LEGO Ideas to vote for your favorite Disney inspired LEGO set!  Who knows, you might just see it in the store one day!

Tour de Turtles Event At Disney’s Vero Beach Scheduled For July

Tour de Turtles Event At Disney's Vero Beach Scheduled For July

Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, located only 2 hours southeast of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, has guests that return year after year. And I’m not just talking about human guests. Sea turtles use the beaches for their nests. They lay eggs and bury them in the sand. Once these eggs hatch, the baby sea turtles make a break for the ocean, using the natural light to guide them. Tour de Turtles is an event that tracks the migration of these sea turtles.

Beginning at 7am on July 28th, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort will begin hosting fun family activities centered around sea turtle conservation. Guests will be able to learn all about ways to help protect these amazing ocean creatures. Satellite transmitters will be attached to the shells of the sea turtles and they will set off on a race around the world. The transmitters send back important information about the turtles’ migration habits, helping scientists with efforts to maintain the turtle population.

Tour de Turtles is an incredibly popular event for guests. So much so that Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is fully booked for this event. To learn more about the Tour de Turtles, please visit www.tourdeturtles.org. You can also visit https://verobeach.disney.go.com/ or contact your travel agent to learn more about Disney’s Vero Beach Resort for future trips!

If you aren’t already planning to attend this year’s Tour de Turtles event, Disney Parks Blog will be live streaming it! Be sure to tune in to see all of the turtle fun at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.

Magic Comes to Elementary Schools with the Disney Musicals in Schools Program

Disney Musicals in Schools

Disney Musicals in Schools

Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS) was developed by the Disney Theatrical Group to bring theatrical programs to underprivileged elementary schools around the United States and even in London. Recently with Los Angeles’s Center Theatre Group, at the Ahmanson Theatre, 300 students participating in the program came together for an unforgettable performance.

For years, Disney Theatrical Productions has licensed “junior” versions of beloved titles such as Aladdin and The Lion King to school groups and professional theaters. But in many parts of the country, schools simply don’t have the resources to stage a musical or provide theatrical education to their students, so in 2010, Disney Theatrical Group decided to do something about that. “Here we were in New York City, in the heart of Times Square, and schools in our own backyard in Brooklyn, in Queens, in the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan just weren’t producing these shows,” says Lisa Mitchell, education director for Disney Theatrical Group.

The Disney Musicals in Schools program was launched with the goal of developing sustainable musical theater programs in schools where there previously were none. Participating schools receive the performance rights to one of Disney’s half-hour musicals for kids, along with the corresponding show kit materials. But what really sets DMIS apart, Mitchell explains, is the support that the schools and their educators receive when they become involved with the program. “We send in a pair of what we call ‘teaching artists’ who are professional musical theater artists and also professional educators,” Mitchell says. The teaching artists work with the students but, more importantly, they’re mentoring the school educators and teachers. “So over the course of the six-month process, the teachers learn how to become music directors, directors, choreographers, producers, stage managers and designers, so that when we’re not there in the future they’ve got the training necessary to sustain this kind of work in the school for year after year after year.”

The program has been an unequivocal success. Just eight years in, DMIS has expanded to 18 cities—including the first international program, which launched in London this year—and some 30,000 kids have now performed in their first school musical through the program. The program culminates in each city with an annual Student Share Celebration that brings together all of the participating schools at storied venues such as Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre and Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. During the event, hundreds of children take the stage for a spectacular night of song, dance and, of course, Disney magic—beginning with a song written expressly for the Disney Musicals in Schools program by the legendary composer Alan Menken, “It Starts with a Dream,” performed together by all of the young actors.

As Mitchell has watched DMIS grow, she has marveled at how each city and theatre company is able to make the program their own. The Las Vegas DMIS program, done in partnership with Smith Center for the Performing Arts, features a number of teaching artists who perform with Cirque du Soleil, giving that city’s choreography an almost acrobatic-like quality; while in Nashville, shows created alongside the Tennessee Performing Arts Center feature musical talent that reflects the world-class music education program offered in the city’s public school system. “One of the things that surprises me most is how you can have two dozen versions of The Lion King take place on school stages around the country, and every single one of them—despite having the same script and the same score and the same plot—is completely unique to that school and that community,” Mitchell says.

CLICK HERE to see a video from the performance!

As the video below demonstrates, the young DMIS participants learn performance techniques through the program that they’ll be able to draw upon as their schools’ theater education programs continue to grow. But Mitchell emphasizes, “More important than the stage skills they’re learning are the life skills: collaboration, empathy, creativity and communication.”

Educator Gabby Mendoza, who participated in Centre Theatre Group’s inaugural year with Disney Musicals in Schools alongside her students at Humphreys Avenue Elementary School in Los Angeles, stresses that the program has had a transformative effect on students. “The students have discovered so much about the arts and themselves. It’s been a true journey, finding confidence week after week,” she says, and she notes that the teachers have reaped immeasurable benefits from the program, as well. “We’ve all been able to learn from each other, lean on each other, and discover strengths and passions in ourselves as educators. When we put our vision together, [we’ve seen] the powerful impact that the arts can have.”

Strobe Light Warnings to be Added to ‘Incredibles 2’ Viewings in Theaters

Strobe Light Warnings

There has been some chatter today about the much anticipated Incredibles 2 movie causing some distress. Apparently, the movie has several scenes with flashing lights that could pose a danger to those with epilepsy or other light-sensitive conditions. Disney is aware of this issue and has now asked all theaters to post a warning for the scenes in question.

Blogger and Twitter user Veronica Lewis (@veron4ica) seems to have initiated the warning online with a Twitter thread that has gone viral, in addition to a post to her blog, Veroniiiica.

Veronica writes that “Incredibles 2” is “filled with tons of strobe/flashing lights,” and explained that people with photosensitive epilepsy aren’t the only ones who could be affected — those who suffer from migraines, vision impairments, seizure conditions, vertigo (specifically flicker vertigo), autism, ADHD, and PTSD could also experience a reaction to the images.

“These scenes are also spread out across the movie and often come without warning. My descriptive audio device warned me about the larger scenes, but other times it was light strobe lights came out of nowhere for no reason.” she writes.

“So, the villain’s weapon of choice in the movie is bright white lights that are at a rapidly flashing/strobing frequency, with the intent to disorient people. One of these scenes lasts over 90 seconds with continuous strobe light, other scenes last anywhere from 5-30 seconds”, Veronica tweets.

“I just wish Disney/Pixar and theaters alike would issue a warning that the movie contains several scenes with strobe lights,” Veronica wrote.

She states that she “is not calling for a boycott of Incredibles 2, or to change the movie. It is very well done, and the strobe lights are an important point in the plot. I just wish Disney/Pixar and theaters alike would issue a warning that the movie contains several scenes with strobe lights”.

If you know of anyone planning to see this movie that suffers from any of these sensitivities or illnesses, please notify them of this issue.
