In 2016 a 2-year-old boy, Lane Thomas, was attacked and killed by an alligator at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. Since that tragic event, approximately 250 gators have been removed from Disney properties in Florida. Disney also erected a lighthouse memorial at Disney’s Grand Floridian to honor Lane.
Lane’s family also founded the Lane Thomas Foundation to remember him and to provide support to families with children in need of life-saving organ transplants.
Disney has been working with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) to trap and remove the gators. In addition to those removal efforts, Disney has also constructed barriers and other means to keep guests safe from gators. Areas at the Walt Disney World Resort that are near water have fencing, boulder walls and warning signs.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that experts on animal biology and conservation say these removal efforts do not negatively impact the Florida alligator population. The alligator population is relatively stable at around 1.3 million alligators in Florida.
No fatal gator attacks have happened at Disney since 2016.
Emilia Clarke Would Love to Spend a Decade Acting in the MCU. Game of Thrones and Solo: A Star Wars Story actress Emilia Clarke is gearing up to make her Marvel Studios debut in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion. Clarke will star alongside Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Ben Mendelsohn (Talos), Kingsley Ben-Adir, Christopher McDonald, Olivia Colman, and Killian Scott in the new show, but Emilia says she would be “lucky” to get the chance at working with Marvel Studios for ten+ years like some of the original Avengers.
During a recent interview with THR Emilia shared, “I mean, I should be so lucky is what I’ll say to that,” she continued, “Everyone I know and everyone I’ve spoken to who is a part of the Marvel universe – and actors talk! Everyone has only the highest praise to offer. There’s a reason why actors stay in it. They’re so loved because they’re having loads of fun. So I’m down for that.”
Emilia is also rumored to return as Qi’ra in a ‘Solo’ spin-off series, potentially the Lando Star Wars show starring Donald Glover and Billy Dee Williams, for Disney+. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for updates and all things Marvel!
