Disneyland Resort for Tweens

Mickey and the Magical Map
Mickey and the Magical Map

Our last vacation to Disneyland Resort marked what I thought was going to be a sad beginning… our oldest daughter was making her first trip as a “tween.” My daughter was losing interest in the princesses, was too big to wear their dresses, and she was overall looking more forward to the big rides than the magic of Disney. To my chagrin, I was very wrong. It was the beginning of a new age of fun to have with my kids. These are some fun things to do, other than rides, to enjoy with your tween.

Disneyland:

Mickey & The Magical Map: With the Princess Fantasy Faire moving to the area in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle, a large amphitheater at the entrance of Toontown was left vacant for a brand new show. With more technology and creativity than the show it replaced, you and your tween will enjoy this show together.

Musical Chairs with Alice & The Mad Hatter: This particular event is never on the schedule, but typically “spontaneously” happens every day between 2:00-2:30 at the Corner Café (also known as Coke Corner) at the end of Main Street. Alice and The Mad Hatter are two of the most interactive Disney characters, and they have the ability to bring even the surliest guest out of their shell. My daughter may be starting to grow out of the princesses, but she still loves these two.

Innoventions: Wait, wait, wait… hear me out. I know a lot of people don’t particularly care for this particular attraction, but the tween stage is a small window that Innoventions is actually very enjoyable. They are old enough to really enjoy playing with the gadgets and buttons and exploring the rest of the “house.” This place is also nicely air conditioned in the summer. Your tween boy will also like to meet the rotating Marvel characters upstairs, a Disneyland Resort exclusive!

Disney California Adventure:

Redwood Creek Challenge: This is an outdoor climb and play area that is broken up into different ability levels. Tweens will enjoy the rock climbs, wooden lookout towers, and sliding down a tire suspended from a cable on the Sequoia Smokejumpers Training Tower. We often have to pull both of our kids out kicking and screaming when it’s time to go.

Mad T Party: With laser lights, thumping music, dancing, street performers, and an arcade, your tween will love this evening attraction at DCA. This show is at the end of Hollywood land and normally starts around 6:00 p.m. Make sure to bring your Glow With the Show ears!

Ghirardelli’s Earthquake Sunday: You never grow out of loving ice cream. A family tradition of ours is to share an Earthquake Sunday at least once when we visit DCA. No matter how old my oldest daughter gets, she still looks forward to this.

Downtown Disney:

Studio Disney 365: The tween girl version of Bibbity Bobbity Boutique, Studio Disney 365 ventures into popular Disney programming rather than the princesses. The thing I like most about this place is that the outfit you purchase with the package can actually be worn on a regular basis. I think this picture of my daughter seeing her makeover for the first time shows how much she loves coming here. Make sure you call ahead and make a reservation. You will need one during peak travel times.

Ridemakerz: What do you do when your tween has outgrown Build-a-bear? You take them next door to Ridemarkers. At Ridemakerz, you get to build your own car from the car shell up. At first glance, you may think this is only for your tween boy, but girls love cars, too!  We happened in here with both of our daughters during our last trip and ended up buying cars for each of them. They get played with far more than their Build-a-Bears ever did.

ESPN Zone Sports Arena: Sports arcade, good food, and every televised sport you can think of makes the ESPN Zone a great family place eat. Make an evening of it and catch a movie right across the walk at AMC Downtown Disney.

Downtown Disney Events: Keep an eye out for special events that take place in the area between ESPN Zone and AMC Theater. We have come across special Nintendo demos, music events, and limited time family activities here.

What are some of your favorite activities to do with your tween? Do you have any tips to add? Our friends over at Destinations in Florida can help you plan your next Disneyland Resort vacation. Make sure you contact them for all of your Disney travel needs!

This is great news since I know many of you have been waiting for this news to plan your trip. So be ready especially the Travel Agents, you know they love getting up at 6 am to get put on hold. At least they get to hear Disney music! Seriously they do love making your vacations more magical.

Italian Serie A club AS Roma has announced that this May they will comeback to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Disney World Resort.

Roma will train at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex from May 22 to May 25 and play a friendly match against Orlando City Soccer Club of the United Soccer League on May 23 at 7:30pm local time.

Roma’s presence at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex coincides with the annual Disney Memorial Day Shootout, which takes place May 23-26 and is the largest three-day soccer tournament in the U.S. In 2013, the shootout attracted more than 600 teams and consisted of more than 1,000 matches and 7,200 participants.

“Our partnership with Disney is an important part of our efforts to connect with young fans worldwide,” said AS Roma CEO Italo Zanzi. “We look forward to hosting fans, particularly the Disney Memorial Day Shootout players, at our training and for an exciting match versus Orlando City.”

“It’s always a thrill for the youth athletes and coaches competing and training at our sports complex when AS Roma is here,” said Disney Sports’ director of sports development Mike Millay. “Having world-class soccer teams, prestigious youth soccer events and creating unique soccer experiences are part of what makes our sports complex one of the premier youth soccer venues in the country.”

Roma fans can purchase tickets through Ticketmaster starting onThursday, April 10, at 10 a.m. ET, and the general public will have an opportunity to purchase their seats on Saturday, April 12, beginning at 10 a.m. ET. Training session times for the Orlando City fixture will be announced at a later date.

Fun Fact: In 2012, Roma entered into a multi-year agreement with Disney Sports to become the official professional football club of the renowned amateur and pro sports complex.

R5 invites You To Choose The Next Big Ring Pop Flavor!

R5 Pic1 Corrected6
R5 Pic1 Corrected6

R5_Pic1_Corrected[6]

Ring Pop will once again ask edible bling devotees to choose the candy’s next sensational lollipop flavor. Bazooka Candy Brands, maker of Ring Pop, has teamed up with rock band R5 for a tasty Facebook flavor face-off. R5 has selected three mouthwatering new Ring Pop flavors—cherry limeade, strawberry banana, and grape─ and will rally fans to visit the Ring Pop Facebook page and vote for their flavor choice. The third annual Choose the Next Big Flavor Competition runs through May 2nd and the winning Ring Pop flavor will arrive on store shelves this fall. The Facebook flavor face-off will tempt taste buds as part of a larger campaign that kicked-off last month inviting fans to share photos and videos of themselves sporting their edible bling with the #RockThatRock for a chance to be featured in a music video this summer. Bazooka Candy Brands and R5 will continue to collaborate throughout 2014 as part of a year-long partnership for Ring Pop and Ring Pop Gummies.

Anthony Trani, Vice President of Marketing, Bazooka Candy Brands, said, “The Choose the Next Big Flavor competition on Facebook has become a fun event our fans look forward to every year. We’re more than thrilled to collaborate with R5 on it this year, not only because of their incredible talent and global popularity, but also because they are so enthusiastic about Ring Pop.”

R5 said, “We’re having so much fun working with Ring Pop and the fans on the ‘Rock That Rock’ music video and we were so psyched when they asked us to be part of this competition to choose the next Ring Pop flavor as well. We can’t wait to see our very own Ring Pop flavor arrive on store shelves! We are looking forward to having the fans help us choose between our three favorite flavors.”

For three weeks, the Ring Pop brand will host the “battle royale” on its Facebook page for fans across the country to voice their choice. R5 will reach out to their fans on social media to vote for one of the three flavors that the band personally selected as their favorites.

R5 was originally formed in 2008 by siblings Riker, Rocky, Ross, and Rydel Lynch, and their friend, Ellington Ratliff. They self-released their first EP, Ready Set Rock in 2010. R5’s debut EP Loud was released in February 2013, which featured in the lead singled and title track “Loud.” The band’s first full-length album, Louder, was released in September 2013 debuting at #24 on Billboard’s Top 200 and #2 on iTunes’ Pop chart. Louder was just released internationally and has rocketed to #1 in 10 countries on the iTunes Chart. The album includes four songs from Loud, plus “Pass Me By” and new single “(I Can’t) Forget About You.” R5 are currently on the first leg of their Louder World Tour.

This marks the third year of the Choose the Next Big Flavor competition on Facebook. In 2013 Bella Thorne, musician and star of the hit Disney Channel original series Shake it Up rallied her fans to choose strawberry lemonade over The Ready Set’s favorite flavor, cookies and cream. The 2012 Choose the Next Big Flavor competition, where tween music acts Megan & Liz, Mindless Behavior, and Kicking Daisies battled it out for the winning flavor, yielded unprecedented fan engagement. The contest garnered more than 62,000 votes on Facebook, and over the course of its four-week run, reached 1.7 million people. After an extremely close competition, Megan & Liz’s flavor choice, raspberry lemonade, was ultimately selected as fan favorite.

Stay tuned for more on R5!

Disney Junior Give a Book

Disney is collaborating with First Book, they will provide donations of up to one million books to U.S. communities in need. They will also give families free digital books from Disney Publishing Worldwide, through Disney Junior‘s “Give a Book Get a Book”.

The program includes a redemption code offering a free Disney Digital book and a way for families to experience giving back by donating books to the community of their choice. Disney Junior’s Give a Book, Get a Book, also includes public service announcements, free storytime events at Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Disney Store locations, and interactive Radio Disney events.

“Yet, books and stories are in short supply for kids in need. That’s why we’re proud to be joining forces with our friends at Disney to put brand new books into the hands of children who so desperately need them.”

Coinciding with the program announcement, lifelong children’s literacy advocate LeVar Burton, Cofounder and Curator-in-Chief of the award-winning Reading Rainbow app, spoke about the importance of building literacy and of storytelling in the digital age. Disney Junior stars Ariel Winter and Tim Gunn (of “Sofia the First”) and David Arquette (of “Jake and the Never Land Pirates”) also participated in a storybook reading for event attendees and their families. Genevieve Goings (of Disney Junior’s “Choo Choo Soul”), who hosts the Give a Book, Get a Book public service announcements on Disney Channel, emceed the event.

“There are few things more powerful than stories to connect children to the world and help them imagine what they can become,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “Yet, books and stories are in short supply for kids in need. That’s why we’re proud to be joining forces with our friends at Disney to put brand new books into the hands of children who so desperately need them.”

“Through the donation of 30 million books over the last 15 years, Disney Publishing Worldwide’s collaboration with First Book has brought the magic of reading and storytelling to millions of children, unleashing their imaginations and opening their worlds,” said Andrew B. Sugerman, Executive Vice President, Disney Publishing Worldwide. “We’re thrilled to expand this program with Disney Junior’s Give a Book, Get a Book.”

Families can now take advantage of an all-new website, GiveaBookGetaBook.com, featuring tools and resources for parents and caregivers that promote the value of storytelling and offer interactive activities. Beginning April 21 in Disney Store locations and later this summer at other nationwide retailers, there are two ways to Give a Book, Get a Book. For a limited time, with the purchase of any specially-marked Disney Junior book or product, receipts or packaging will include a redemption code allowing kids and families to direct the donation of a book to First Book in the region of their choice and to access a free Disney Digital Book to share as a family. Additionally, Give a Book, Get a Book bookmarks with redemption codes will be distributed to visitors at participating public libraries and Radio Disney events throughout the summer. With the help of families across the United States, Disney and First Book will donate up to one million books through this program.

Also starting April 21, Disney Store locations will provide an enhanced interactive “Storytime Powered by Give a Book, Get a Book” featuring two new stories from Disney Junior favorites, “Sofia the First” and “Jake and the Never Land Pirates.” In addition to the in-store readings, Disney Store locations will host special storytime events at Boys & Girls Clubs of America in multiple markets across the U.S. Children at these events will be given a free book along with a redemption code bookmark.

Osborne Lights Are A Must When Visiting WDW At Christmas-time

Osb Lights1

It’s never too early to start planning your next Walt Disney World vacation, and Disney at Christmastime is something you definitely have to see at least once in your lifetime. The decorations, the music, the food – its all amazing. One thing that is a 100% must see for a WDW Christmas vacation is the Osborne Family Spectacle Of Dancing Lights

Osb Before

If you are strolling through the Streets Of America during the daytime from mid-November to early January when the Lights are setup, it may not seem that appealing – tons of wires and metal figures cover every surface – and it’s only at night that they come alive! The Spectacle began in 1986 in Arkansas as Jennings Osborne adorned his home with Christmas lights (upon his daughter’s request!). It grew every year as many more lights, colors, and sculptures were added – they even had a 75-foot tall Christmas tree covered in lights! In 1995, when legal (and traffic) complications were threatening to shut them down – Mickey stepped in and offered the Osborne’s a permanent place to house their display – Disney World!

Osb Switchkid

It’s a display of millions of LED lights that cover Disney’s Hollywood Studios Streets Of America area. They are lit nightly at dusk – Goofy and a special helper flip the giant switch that bring the lights to life!

Osb Lights2

These are no ordinary Christmas lights – there are fixtures that spin and move, and the lights change and blink in time to classic Christmas songs. The lights wrap the buildings, and they change hues and brightness as the music surrounds you – familiar holiday shapes include a carousel of angels, you soldiers, and Santa and his reindeer

Osb Lights 4

My family and I were lucky enough to get to check these out on Christmas Day this past year – and I have to say, watching the lights go on and getting to enjoy the Spectacle actually brought a tear to my eye. It was the perfect place to spend the evening on Christmas Day with my family, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Oh, and did I mention that they make it SNOW too? Talk about getting into the holiday spirit!

Osb lights3

Are you planning on checking out WDW at Christmas time? If you are, then I HIGHLY recommend that you check out the Osborne Lights – the history behind it is pretty cool, not to mention it really is an amazing display!
