Disneyland Resort Restaurants Wins Big Awards

Carthay Restaurant
Carthay Restaurant

Carthay restaurant

Disneyland Resort is celebrating because they have just picked up 12 new awards from the Southern California Restaurant Writers, with tributes for 2013-2014 going to restaurants at Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park and the Disneyland Resort hotels.

Each year, the Southern California Restaurant Writers evaluates restaurants from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border on food, service, ambiance and beverages. Three Disneyland Resort restaurants received highest honors, earning the coveted Five Star award and the Golden Bacchus Wine Award: Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge in Disney California Adventure Park, Napa Rose in Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Steakhouse 55 in the Disneyland Hotel.

These, plus several other prestigious awards, were presented to the Disneyland Resort staff at the 2013-2014 Southern California Restaurant Writers Annual Awards Banquet held on April 13 at the Astor Classic Events Center in Anaheim, Calif. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Jose Barragan, named “Manager of the Year” for his work at Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge.

Barragan has been with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts for 17 years. He brings 35 years of food service experience, plus a business administration education, to Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge. Prior to his Disney career, he spent 11 years at the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and four years at the Ritz-Carlton.

Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge take you back to the Golden Age of Hollywood at the heart of Disney California Adventure Park. The seasonal menu, created by award-winning Executive Chef Andrew Sutton, celebrates California’s diverse cuisine. Guests enjoy varieties of sustainable fish, both wild and farmed, in dishes such as ceviche of blue cobia and sesame-soy-glazed Skuna Bay salmon. The lunch menu includes seasonal salads, such as Strawberry Chicken, an Angus burger with cheddar cheese and house-made pickles. A friendly wine program includes both Old and New World wines, with a focus on California vintages.

Napa Rose, at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, also earned 5 Stars and the Golden Bacchus Wine Award this year. Napa Rose showcases California wine country cuisine, changing its menu seasonally to source the finest, freshest ingredients. The cuisine is created to complement the restaurant’s extensive California-dominated wine collection. The 17,000-bottle cellar carries more than 1,000 different labels, with 80 wines available by the glass.

With 12 awards going to eight restaurants, 2 in Disneyland Park, 2 in Disney California Adventure Park and 3 in Disneyland Resort hotels – Disneyland Resort guests have some amazing dining options and locations to pick from.

Top Five Ways to Work Out at Disney World

ESPN runDisney DLRHalf Hero1
ESPN runDisney DLRHalf Hero1

ESPN_runDisney_W&DHalf_Hero1

Are you a fit and active vacationer? Do you wake-up early to run or work out at the gym?

Disney offers an array of opportunities for those looking to exercise while visiting the resort. Here are my top five picks for working out at Walt Disney World:

5. Some of the resorts have a fitness center. The centers are free to use for guests of those resorts, or you can pay $12 per day to use the facility if you are staying at a different resort. Here is a list of resorts with fitness centers:

  • Boardwalk – Muscles & Bustles Health Club
  • Animal Kingdom Lodge – Zahanati Fitness Center
  • Coronado Springs Resort – La Vida Fitness Center
  • Contemporary  Resort – Olympiad Fitness Center
  • Grand Floridian – Grand Floridian Spa & Health Club
  • Old Key West – R.E.S.T. Exercise Room
  • Saratoga Springs –  Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa Fitness Center
  • Wilderness Lodge  – Sturdy Branches Health Club
  • Yacht and Beach Club – Ship  Shape Health Club

4. Hit some balls on one of Disney’s fabulous tennis courts. Several resorts have courts. You will need to reserve court time in order to play on the resort courts. You can even sign up for lessons or time with a tennis pro. Clinics and private instruction at the Walt Disney World Resort can be reserved by calling 321-228-1146.  Lessons are provided by Orlando Tennis Services, LLC and are available at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Bay Lake Tower, Saratoga Springs and the Yacht & Beach Clubs. Equipment is provided. You must be a resort guest to participate. Private appointments are available, or you can join a group lesson. The cost is $90 per hour, per person (DVC members receive 10% discount).

3. If you are a runner, you might consider staying at one of the resorts with dedicated trails. You can also bus to one of these resorts and use the trails free of charge. Jogging trails can be found at the following resorts:

  • Caribbean Beach : 1.4 mile
  • Boardwalk Resort: 0.8 mile
  • Coronado Springs Resort:  9/10th of a mile
  • Ft. Wilderness: 1.5 mile
  • Grand Floridian Resort & Spa: 1.4 mile
  • Old Key West
  • Polynesian Resort: 1.5 mile
  • Port Orleans Resort: .7 mile and 1 mile
  • Wilderness Lodge and Villas: 1.5 mile

2. Surf’s Up! Want a unique and challenging workout? Try the surf school at Typhoon Lagoon. Surfing  lessons are offered every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6:30am – 9:00am. Instruction is provided by Craig Carroll’s Cocoa Beach Surfing School. Class sizes are limited to 12 guests and you must be age 8 or older to participate. The session is a half hour of land instruction followed by two hours in the water. Guests must use the soft sided surfboards which are provided. The cost is $150 per person plus the cost of admission to Typhoon Lagoon. For reservations, call 407-WDW-PLAY (939-7529).

1. Just being at Disney and having fun gives you a great workout! Let’s face it: we get a pretty darn good workout by walking throughout the parks all day for multiple days in a row. If you add a day or two at a water park you add lots of stair-climbing and swimming activities. My #1 pick for getting a workout at Disney is to just enjoy Disney and participate in all of the fun it has to offer. Trust me, you will be sore by the end of the day just from having a lot of fun!

Where do you like to workout at Disney? Have you tried the tennis lessons or Surf School? Tell us about them!

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic

The Hub Network’s popular animated series, “My Little Pony Friendship is Magic,” has its 4th season finale airing on Saturday, May 10, with 2 all-new, back-to-back episodes, “Twilight’s Kingdom – Part 1” and “Twilight’s Kingdom – Part 2,” starting at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT on the Hub Network. Leading up to the season finale, the network will air a marathon of special episodes from season four starting at 7:30 a.m. ET/4:30 am PT. In addition, on April 28, a new My Little Pony game, “My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Rainbow Falls Flight School” will launch on HubNetwork.com. There will also be monthly updates to the popular “Equestrivia Challenge,” starting May 1.

The Hub Network’s fourth season of “My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic” will culminate with an amazing adventure during its two-part finale in which Princess Twilight Sparkle continues to struggle with her identity as a princess and her role as the newest member of Equestrian royalty. When Princess Celestia has a premonition about a mysterious evil foe from the past and turns to an unlikely source for help, Twilight Sparkle feels extra pressure to prove her worth.

In hopes that it will provide some insight as to the kind of princess she is meant to be, Twilight Sparkle focuses her attention on opening the chest that was given to her by the Tree of Harmony. Secrets are revealed and mysteries are unraveled as all of Equestria joins forces to stop this new threat.

In the new online game “Rainbow Falls Flight School,” players help Rainbow Dash prepare for the Equestria Games by enduring a series of challenging aerial obstacle courses. Throughout the game, players can collect items to unlock a fast-paced matching mini-game, exclusive printables and additional playable characters. In the popular trivia game “Equestrivia Challenge,” which will start receiving updates every month beginning May 1, players prove their pony knowledge by answering questions about “My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic.”

“My Little Pony Friendship is Magic” follows the magical Princess Twilight Sparkle and her trusted assistant Spike, who live in Ponyville in the enchanted land of Equestria, along with her colorful pony friends – honest Applejack, generous Rarity, kind Fluttershy, loyal Rainbow Dash and fun-loving Pinkie Pie. Together, they teach one another valuable lessons about the most powerful magic of all the magic of friendship.

Sounds so cute. I grew up with My Little Pony, so happy to see they are still around!

Making the Most of Disney’s 24 Hour Event

24 hour event
24 hour event

Did you make it 24 hours

Are you ready to “Rock Your Disney Side”? If you’re like me, you’re already planning on visiting the Magic Kingdom at Disney World on May 23 & 24, 2014 for this extra magical event. Having been last year for the Monstrous Summer kick-off, I have to say that Disney sure does this 24 hour park experience right.  The Magic Kingdom park will be open 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. for an entire 24 hours! This year’s theme is all about pirates, princesses, villains and more!

Having been last year, I wasn’t fully prepared for all of the excitement; here are some tips to help make your  24 hour Magic Kingdom experience as rockin’ as possible!

Plan for Crowds: Attending for the first time last year, I did not anticipate the large amount of crowds in the Magic Kingdom during peak times. It took my group 30 minutes to get from the Rose Garden to the Plaza Restaurant! Prepare for high attendance and large crowds. The hub gets extraordinarily busy, so take advantage of alternate park exits that are often open when high attendance occurs.

Utilize Fastpass+: Think strategically when you go. Use those Fastpass+’s for peak times when the park may be at its busiest. 5 a.m. is not the time to bust out a Fastpass+ for Space Mountain!

Take Breaks: There’s no rule that says you have to party till you drop (of course, you can if you want to!). Head to the park early , take an afternoon break or nap and then head back to the Magic Kingdom rested and ready to go another round! You’ll be glad you took that afternoon nap or time back at your resort.

24 hour event

Make Dining Reservations: If you plan on any table service dining experiences make sure to book those ADRs. Walk-ups during peak times won’t be available, so it will be important to have those reservations booked well in advance. Planning on quick service for meal options? Give yourself ample time to get to those locations and plan for extra wait times…just in case!

Enjoy the Rockin’ Experiences: There’s so much to see and do during the 24 hour events at Disney. You’ll want to look for special character meet-ups, dance parties, parades, fireworks, and even a meetup from our very own Chip & Co. (make sure to signup on the Disney Addicts Facebook page).

Get Merchandise Early: Limited edition merchandise for the 24 hour event sells out pretty quickly. If you have a certain item you simply must have, try to get in lines for merchandise early. There may be a wait, but you’ll be sure to get that rockin’ gear you want.

24 hours

Utilize a Vacation Planner: Destinations in Florida is Chip & Co’s travel partner. You’ll want to take advantage of all that the vacation planners can do to make sure your travel experience is extra magical. From assisting you will all your travel planning needs to great rates, you’ll want to take advantage of their expertise.

Have you been to the 24 hour event at Disney World? What are your tips for making the experience even more magical?

When Sarah isn’t sharing planning tips about the Walt Disney World Resort, you can find her at Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW where she writes dining reviews and shares tips and tricks about dining at Disney with a special diet.
