Top 10 Outdoor Rides in Walt Disney World

outdoor rides

No matter the time of year Florida is a beautiful place to visit. It was the reason for Walt Disney’s choice of location for his second park. I don’t know about you but when I am heading to Disney World I don’t only look forward to the characters, parades and food- I look forward to catching some rays as I enjoy the day! I want to be outside when I can and enjoy that sun. As a follow-up to my Top 10 Indoor Rides, here are my Top 10 Outdoor favorites!

1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, MK- One of the most popular and family friendly but still exciting roller coasters out there! This is one of those rides I could go on again and again back to back!

2. Mad Tea Party, MK- A classic. This is a “must see” for every first timer especially. This is one of the original rides from opening day in 1971 and a ride that can be found in Disneyland as well as Disneyland Paris. The bonus of this ride is its outdoor but covered!

3. Kali River Rapids, AK- Not only is this a fantastic and fun ride that keeps you outdoors but you have a really great chance of getting wet and cooling off! This ride is an adventure ride with lots of spins and drops.

4. Kilimanjaro Safari, AK- a nice way to get a load off those tired feet and see many of the Animal Kingdom feature animals from perfect vantage points. Have your camera ready because you may see zebras, rhinos, giraffes and if you’re lucky-a lion or two!

5. Dumbo the Flying Elephant, MK- This ride was such a popular classic that during the expansion of New Fantasyland it doubled in size! Perfect for your little ones, don’t miss this one.

6. Summit Plummet, BB- One of the best water slides Disney and anyone else has to offer! This slide is one of the fastest and longest in the world at 120 feet of free fall! If you make it to Blizzard Beach and you have a daredevil spirit, this is for you!

7. Primeval Whirl, AK- Found in Dinoland U.S.A in Animal Kingdom this carnival-style roller coaster puts a new “spin” on things! The cars you are seated in not only whiz around the coaster tracks but it spins on the track as you roll! Note- This ride is currently closed for refurbishment so check to be sure it’s open for your trip!

8. Walt Disney World Railroad, MK- By no means a thrill ride, this old-fashioned steam-powered train picks you up in Fantasyland and drops you off in Frontierland and Main Street U.S.A. (and vice versa). It’s a different way to see the park and provides a scenic shortcut for those who need a break!

9. Splash Mountain, MK- Though only about 50% outdoors the real thrill of the ride is in outside in the Florida sunshine so it makes this list! It’s a high-speed, long drop right under the brier patch. Keep your camera in your bag…you may get wet!

10. Jungle Cruise, MK- I was broken-hearted when this ride was closed on my most recent trip this May! A family favorite, everyone loves the trip through the jungle with views of playful elephants, hippos and a comedic tour guide.

BONUS: I can’t logically include this attraction because it’s not a “ride” but I also feel I can not mention it! I have been obsessed with the Swiss Family Robinson Tree House since I was a kid! It’s a must see for me every time I’m in Disney World. What was your favorite outdoor ride as a kid?

DreamWorks and Disney Studios Ending Partnership

DreamWorks Studios and Walt Disney Studios will be ending their partnership by next summer according to online sources.   The six year relationship between both studios is an amicable one and many have already approached Spielberg about a new partnership with DreamWorks.  Disney’s decision not to extend the partnership, which will probably end after the July release of “The BFG“, comes without many details, but rumored to not have been one that worked for either party.

Universal, 20th Century Fox and Participant are just a few of the studios who appear interested in joining forces with DreamWorks, although all have declined to comment.

Participant and DreamWorks had a major hit with “The Help” which was released by Disney in 2011.  Mr. Spielberg’s “Lincoln” also released by Disney Studios in 2012 brought in $275 million in worldwide sales and won Daniel Day-Lewis and Oscar. but DreamWorks initial deal to supply six movies annually was not met due to financial struggles and Mr. Speilberg’s commitments to outside studios.  The inability to meet the six movie commitment and the acquisition of Marvel and Lucasfilm for $8 billion has shifted Disney Pictures movie focus towards Marvel, Lucasfilm, Disney and Pixar.

As Entertainment Writer for Chipandco.com, I will be following DreamWorks news closely to see where one of my favorite movie studios makes their new home.

Kermit and Denise

Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy recently announced they were parting ways after four long decades of dating.  Well it seems Kermit who is still part of Miss Piggy’s late night talk show “Up Late with Miss Piggy”  has been seen with a new Pig.    Denise is Head of Marketing at ABC and has been spotted around town and the set of Up Late with Miss Piggy.   A close source has even stated that Kermit is referring to Denise as his girlfriend.    This new romance announcement by Kermit came out in the aftermath of an Instagraom  post by Liam Hemsworth “Spent Friday with the most beautiful girl in the world,” the Hunger Games star posted along with a photo of himself with Miss Piggy. “Kermit, #SorryNotSorry.”

Reports on Entertainment Weekly has Hemsworth guest starring on The Muppets this fall and our source confirmed that Denise will also be making an appearance.   This Entertainment Writer can’t wait to see all the new romantic moments between our favorite Pig and Frog and their new love interests when The Muppets premiere, September 22, 2015 at 8 p.m.  (ET) on ABC.   Will you be watching?

Here are some fun clips from the Muppets TV Show.

Disney Finds – What’s this? A Jack Skellington Ornament?

Christmas is coming, well not before a little Halloween fun next month. Our friend DenileArts is trying something new this week. She is the designer of those fun Disney Princess and Disney Villains vinyls we have shared on the website several times. Oh and her store is the only place to pick up our Home Vinyls… Now she is working on Halloween/Christmas Ornaments. I say both holidays as the Nightmare before Christmas can really be used at either time. While only a Jack Skellington ornament for now she has plans to release a few more in the coming week.

Like me she is a perfectionist and really wants to make sure they look good before putting something up on her store. So stay tuned for Sallie this coming week.

Cost for the Jack Skellington ornament is only $10. To learn more and to order yours just click any of the links above.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Ready To Jump Into The Jungle Cruise Movie

safe image

The Rock-Dwayne Johnson

Walt Disney Pictures has been talking about The Jungle Cruise movie for a few years, but has finally started to get things moving.   Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tweeted the news about his meeting with writers, John Reque and Glenn Ficarra on September 1, 2015.

Johnson who is known for his social media posts added some funny hashtags sharing the movie will be set in the 1920s.

Pumped to kick off the writing for our Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE. Great meeting w/ our writers Requa & Ficarra who last wrote and directed FOCUS w/ Will Smith and BAD SANTA w/ Billy Bob Thornton. Our goal is to push the envelope in a smart, edgy, epically fun way. Johnny Depp raised the bar with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN.. now it’s our turn at bat to take an iconic Disney attraction and hopefully turn it into something dope and cool. I’ll keep y’all posted along the way. Here we go… #BigAdventureAwaits #ItsAPeriodMovie #DamnRightIWillStillBeHandsomeInThe1920s #JungleCruise

The team of Reque and Ficarra as writers and directors have a great list of successful movies including the recent Will Smith con-man drama Focus, Crazy, Stupid, Love, Dogs & Cats and Bad Santa.  The variety of movie plots by the writers has this writer intrigued as to what the plot of the Jungle Cruise Movie will be.   But the fact that it is based on one of my favorite Disney rides and the reference to Pirates of the Caribbean in Dwayne Johnson’s tweet has me hoping it will be filled with adventures and funny scenes.

I will be keeping very close tabs on the development of The Jungle Cruise Movie and sharing updates on www.chipandco.com.

Walt in Walt’s Disneyland Footsteps Tour Review

Walk in Walts footsteps
Walk in Walts footsteps

Walk in Walt's footsteps

Disneyland is unique in that it’s the only park where guests can truly walk in Walt Disney’s footsteps, and Disneyland relishes in this. From the Walt’s Favorites section of the menu at Carnation Café to Walt’s appearance in the Disneyland Forever fireworks, his spirit seems to resonate strongest in Disneyland.

Do you want to truly walk in Walt’s footsteps, learning about the intricacies of planning while touring the park? Then, the Walk in Walt’s Disneyland Footsteps guided tour would be a great addition to your Disneyland vacation.

Tours start in either the morning or afternoon. Tours cost $109 (Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club Members and Disney Visa cardholders receive a discount), not including park admission. However, a meal at the Jolly Holiday Bakery Café is included with your tour (P.S. it’s delicious), as well as a collector’s edition pin, only available to those who take the tour.

11885202_10204701552231274_1998684817783069765_n

A Disney guest services cast member will guide you throughout the park, beginning the journey in Main Street, U.S.A. outside Walt’s apartment. Usually, this tour includes a visit to his apartment, but as the apartment is currently being refurbished, our tour took us to the Disney Dream Suite instead (more on that below). You can see a recreation of the apartment at the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco and photos of the apartment in the nearby Disneyland exhibit in Main Street, U.S.A.

Not only will you hear from your tour guide, but Walt himself guides you through the park. You’ll hear his opening day speech and his discussions on various attractions, such as “it’s a small world.”

The tour includes a visit to some classic Disney attractions without the wait. Experiences vary, but we rode Alice in Wonderland and the Haunted Mansion. We also took a ride on the Walt Disney Railroad as we heard about Walt’s love of trains.

One of the perks of this tour is that you’ll be with a Disney expert, your cast member, for about four hours. You can ask your guide anything about the parks, and they’ll give you an answer (pending it’s information they’re allowed to share).

You’ll also hear about the exclusive Club 33 and Walt’s plans for the club. You don’t get to visit, unfortunately.

11892017_10204701552591283_3538320838506540313_n

The crowning jewel of the tour, though, was a visit to the Disney Dream Suite. During the Year of a Million Dreams, Disney gave away stays in the Dream Suite, and you can still only stay in the suites if you win a stay. The suite at Walt Disney World is located inside Cinderella’s Castle. There wasn’t enough room in Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland to fit a suite, but what would have been Walt’s second Disneyland home sits above Pirates of the Caribbean.

Walt loved his apartment on Main Street, U.S.A., but his family had begun to outgrow it. With grandchildren, he wanted a bigger spot for his family to rest. This would have been where the Dream Suite is today. Walt would have been able to easily walk from his suite to Club 33 and entertain before retiring in his suite that evening.

Walt passed away as the suite was being constructed, and his family decided to stop preparations. It has since served as an art gallery.

Every room in the Dream Suite represents a different land in the park, and every room includes Disney’s “Good Night Kiss,” referring to the last piece of magic Disney wants their guests to remember before they leave. You’ll get to see all these pieces of magic with a push of a button in every room.

The Rooms:

Master Bedroom – Adventureland

Good Night Kiss: As music from The Jungle Book plays, the lights dim. It appears a waterfall is reflecting throughout the room. A painting of an empty lagoon is suddenly inhabited by mermaids.

Bathroom –Fantasyland

Dressing Area – Main Street, U.S.A.

Good Night Kiss: As music from Fantasia plays, the mosaic scene around the bathtub lights up with stars. Be sure to see the shooting star!

Sitting Room – New Orleans Square

Good Night Kiss: The grandfather clock strikes 12, showing a silhouette of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Other trinkets around the room come alive.

Children’s Room – Frontierland

What seems to be shelves lined with various Disney nods, such as a copy of Treasure Island and the sailing ship Columbia, are more than just a place for collectibles. A train comes to life, traveling above the room, and the various trinkets light up and move.

You’ll also visit the balcony, where you have a perfect view of New Orleans Square and the Rivers of America. For those lucky guests who get to stay in the Dream Suite, it’s a perfect viewing spot for Fantasmic and Disneyland Forever. Cast members deliver hot chocolate and the show music is piped in through your personal speaker system.

Photos are not allowed in the Dream Suite, but your tour guide will take one photo of you near the fireplace in the sitting room before you leave.

Though the other parts of the tour are fun, visiting the Disney Dream Suite is truly what makes this tour worth it. This is the best Disney tour I’ve ever been on, including Walt Disney World tours. I recommend doing this tour if you have at least three full days in the parks, as the tour will take about four hours.

To book a tour, call 714-781-TOUR. You can only book Disneyland tours 30 days in advance.
