Disney is taking over security efforts at Disney World theme parks

Recently Disney added new security policies for guest entering the theme parks. Metal detectors were added, many items were banned from entry to the theme parks, and even mounted patrols were added after the event at Disney Springs last month.

12387933_10153968309028072_697035649_n

Since the security changes occurred so sudden Disney had to hire a 3rd party company to handle the new security measures, you can tell them by their yellow colored shirts at the gate.

While these changes were in place Disney was in the process of hiring new security personnel.  Over the past few weeks a transition from the 3rd party company to Disney’s own staff has been taking place. It started with the Animal Kingdom then on to Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and the Magic Kingdom will be the last to receive this update.

Overall the transition has been smooth, while I was there last week I was selected twice to go through the additional security screening. If you fly at all it is basically the same procedure. After they go through your bag you head over to the metal detector, you remove all the items from your pockets. If you set off the detector they wand you looking for the metal. My Star Wars belt set off the detector and I had to lift my shirt to show I was not carrying a gun like the lawyer from Miami tried last month.

It took maybe an additional 30 seconds to get through the gate, no biggie at all. This happened to me in Animal Kingdom and it was Disney’s own security who scanned me so they were friendly yet assertive. They joked about all of my Star Wars items I was wearing and how I was only missing the shoes.

I am glad to see Disney stepping up the security measures coming into the parks. I have no problem delaying my entry if it means I do not have to worry about something happening to my family.

Ten Overlooked Experiences at Magic Kingdom

MK overlooked
MK overlooked

MK overlooked

The Disney World Resort is full magical experiences. There are so many amazing things to see and do around the parks that one trip is not enough to do it all. However, there are some experiences that are often overlooked by guests and this should certainly not be the case. Each new character meet and greet, restaurants, or attraction will add a whole new level of magic to your trip. Here are the top ten overlooked experiences in Magic Kingdom.

You should add at least one of these to your to-do list for your next trip.

  • Riverboat – Have you ever wanted to travel on an old time steam boat? Well, you can fulfill that dream at Magic Kingdom Park. Take a relaxing cruise along the Rivers of America on board the Liberty Belle. Take break from the hustle and bustle of the park and take in the sights.
  • Tom Sawyer Island – If you’re looking for somewhere to let your kids burn off some energy or you want to go back to the times when things were simple then this place is for you. Take a raft for the island where you can explore the mill, the cave, and the fort. Spend as much time as you like – there’s no rush.
  • Country Bear Jamboree – This is truly a classic – it is one of the last that Walt helped to develop. Who doesn’t want to watch singing country bears!
  • A Pirates Adventure – Treasures of the Seven Seas – Much like Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, A Pirates Adventure is a great way to explore the park and spend time together as a family! Sign up, grab a map and follow the clues around Adventureland to find the treasure. Be sure to pay attention, there are surprises around every corner.
  • Sleepy Hollow – Located in Liberty Square this little eatery gives guests a great view of the castle and delicious eats. Until my last trip to Disney World I didn’t even know that it existed, but now it is on my list of must-do snack places for every trip. Behead your hunger with waffles, waffle sandwiches both sweet and savory, funnel cakes and ice cream cookie sandwiches!
  • Cheshire Café – Grab a snack from this often overlooked location on the border of Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. The menu isn’t incredibly extensive here, but special menu items are often featured and will be displayed on counter top signs.
  • Main Street Vehicles – Climb aboard the turn of the century vehicles for a memorable trip down Main Street. That’s right, you didn’t know that you could ride take a ride in these did, you?!
  • Main Street Performers – Of course there are the parades and the shows in front of the Castle, but there is so much more entertainment to enjoy on Main Street. Grab a seat and enjoy any or all of the Main Street Trolley Show, the Main Street Philharmonic, The Dapper Dans, the Citizens of Main Street, and the Casey’s Corner Pianist.
  • Flag Retreat – Every day at 5:00pm the flag on Main Street, the only real American Flag inside the park, is lowered. Each time a veteran is selected to be part of the ceremony. It is something that everyone should see at least once.
  • Tiana and Naveen – In Liberty Square, next to Liberty Tree Tavern, you can meet Tiana, the American Princess. And if you’re lucky you may get to meet her prince, Naveen, too!

Things to do at the Disneyland Resort when it Rains

DLR rain
DLR rain

DLR rain

Believe it or not, the Happiest Place on Earth doesn’t always have the best weather. Every now and then there is a rainy day at the Disneyland Resort. Don’t stress if it starts to rain! Some people will leave the parks or not even go if it’s raining. Take advantage of the lower crowds and shorter lines! Here are some things you can do to stay out of the rain:

Shopping

There are so many wonderful shops at the Disneyland Resort! When it starts raining, head into one of the shops on Main Street or Buena Vista Street. The great thing about the shops on those streets is they are all connected! So you won’t have to get wet when you leave one shop to go into another.

Indoor Attractions

When it rains, the outdoor attractions (like Big Thunder Mountain) will close until the weather clears up. Take this opportunity to ride one of the many indoor attractions like Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland or Toy Story Midway Mania at Disney California Adventure.

Shows

Most of the shows at the parks are indoors. Check out “Mickey and the Magical Map” at Disneyland or “Disney Junior-Live on Stage!” at Disney California Adventure.

Dining

Even if you don’t already have a dining reservation, check to see if there have been any cancelations or see if you can walk up and get a table. You’ll be out of the rain and get to enjoy a delicious meal. Or grab a bite at any of the quick service locations.

Downtown Disney District

The Downtown Disney District has lots of indoor options for staying dry. You can shop, dine, or see a movie at the AMC theater.

Stay at Disneyland

Disneyland has more indoor attractions than California Adventure. If you have a park hopper, check out Disneyland for staying out of the rain. Take a round trip ride on the Disneyland Railroad or take a tour around Tom Sawyer Island on the Mark Twain Riverboat.

Characters

You can still see some great characters at Disneyland when it’s raining. Mickey Mouse is at his house in Toon Town and some princesses are at the Princess Fantasy Faire in Fantasyland.

Wet Rides

If you don’t mind being wet, go on the rides that you know you’ll get wet on anyways. Splash Mountain at Disneyland or Grizzly River Run at Disney California Adventure are sure to get you wet!

What are some things you like to do when it rains at the Disneyland Resort?

Will Disney’s Beach Club Resort Soon Be Hosting an Afternoon Tea?

beach club

Good Evening Disney Gossip Addicts! Anonymouse here, and don’t tell Chip, but I have a little bit of Disney World gossip……

First, some info on the subject: Have you ever been to or heard of Afternoon Tea in the Garden View Tea Room at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa? It’s a rather elegant affair from a bygone era that is currently celebrated daily from 2:00pm to 5:00pm and served in traditional British style inside the ultra posh and relaxing atmosphere of the one and only Grand Floridian. The Grand Floridian Resort is known for it’s upscale Victorian theme, so this type of experience fits in perfectly there. Guests can sip from a collection of international teas – including Mrs. Potts Tea for the younger guests – and have the opportunity to enjoy scones, pastries, sandwiches, and more.

And now for today’s gossip: We have just heard a rumor that Disney’s Beach Club Resort may be offering a very similar Afternoon Tea session starting next month in their Solarium! Much like the Garden View Tea Room, the Solarium near the Beach Club lobby is a very peaceful setting and would also make for a wonderful tea room, with lots of beautiful sunlight and cozy chairs, plus a TV! We hear that this could be offered only on select dates, including February (11th-14th), March (24th-29th), May (5th-8th), and September (1st-5th) 2016. To go along with the classic serving of teas, it is most likely that a variety of savory and sweet treats will be served, as well as the possibility of alcoholic beverages. Please keep in mind that this has not been confirmed by Disney, and is just speculation for now. But nonetheless, I am excited and hope that this happens!

What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below!

That is all the Disney gossip I have for now. For my past gossip articles be sure to check them out here. Got any good gossip/rumors please email me at anonymouse@chipandco.com or on my Facebook page

Ten Disney World Experiences that are Worth Splurging On

splurging
splurging

splurging

There are some many articles out there about how to cut costs and save money when planning for and while on your Disney vacation. Saving is important, especially in the still hurting economy, but there are some amazing experiences available at Disney World that are worth spending a little extra money. Not all splurges are worth it for everyone, but adding just one of these experiences could add more magic to your already magical Disney World vacation.

Here are the top ten experiences at Disney World that are worth splurging on.

  1. Length of Stay – Do you only spend a few days at Disney World? It is recommended that you spend one day at each park, but there is so much to see and do between the four parks, that four days is not enough to see and do even half of it! Epcot and Magic Kingdom are both easily at least two day parks. So why not add a few extra days to your trip? More time in the parks does mean spending more, but as you add more days the tickets get cheaper by day. More days means more magic.
  1. Stay on Property – Staying at a Disney World resort has a lot of advantages that include transportation, Magicbands, the ability to purchase the dining plan, and Extra Magic Hours. There are over 25 resorts on property, with three different categories – deluxe, moderate, and vale – so there is something to fit every budget. So, staying on site is not that much of a splurge in comparison – but it is certainly worth it!
  1. Add to Your Collection – Everyone has a collection, or knows someone that has one. And if you don’t have one of your own, what are you waiting for?! I personally collect pins, and I love to add to the collection on each of my Disney vacations. So, whether you collect pins, snow globes, ornaments, or whatever it is that you collect, don’t hold back! Allow yourself to add to your collection every time you visit Disney World.
  1. Park Hoppers – One park per day tickets are certainly the way to go if you’re looking to save money, but if you want the ability to experience the magic of more than one park per day you’ll require a Park Hopper ticket. These tickets give you the option to experience one, two, three, or all four parks in the same day. I can easily spend all day at Animal Kingdom, but when it closes at 5pm I am normally not ready to call it a day. With a park hopper ticket I can hop on a bus to Magic Kingdom and continue to enjoy the magic.
  1. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or Pirates League – This is one is just for the little ones. Give your prince or princess the royal treatment at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Girls can be transformed into princesses during a makeover including hair, makeup and a costume. Boys can be transformed into knights! If royalty isn’t their thing then they can go the way of the sea. Boys and girls can get pirate makeovers at the Pirates League. If you’re little princess prefers a more girly approach she can opt for the mermaid makeover!
  1. Character MealsCharacter meals are a great way to meet your favorite characters without having to wait in long lines. You just sit and enjoy you meal and then characters will come to you. There are quite a few character meals on property, both in the parks and at resorts, and they aren’t just available for breakfast. These meals are splurges because they are sit down meals and therefore more pricey than quick service meals, but they are worth it. Not only do you get to meet characters without lines, but on the dining side of things these meals are almost always buffets or are served family style. So, enjoy for time with characters and all of the delicious food that you can eat.
  1. Signature DiningSignature dining is a great way to experience well, a higher quality experience. Signature restaurants can be found all around the Disney World Resort, and they are especially great for those on their honeymoon, an anniversary trip, or even just for parents that want a date night away from the kids. Adding just one signature dining experience can completely change your entire trip.
  1. Attend a Party – Or take a cruise! The Pirate and Pals Fireworks Voyage offers guests the opportunity to dine on pirate snacks before setting sail to watch Wishes! A special guest also awaits travelers when they return to the dock. The Ferrytale Dessert and Fireworks Cruise gives guests another opportunity to view Wishes from the water. Dine on delicious desserts, view a gorgeous nighttime display in the sky, and get a souvenir to take home with you. There are also dessert parties back on land and all three parks. The Wishes Fireworks Dessert Party at Magic Kingdom, the Illuminations Sparkling Dessert Party at Epcot, and the Symphony in the Stars: A Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party. All of these offer guest the opportunity to have a prime viewing location for these nighttime spectaculars and to enjoy tasty treats. There are also two tea parties available. Afternoon Tea included tea, sandwiches and scones can be enjoyed at the Garden View Tea Room at the Garden Floridian Resort and Spa. The Perfectly Princess Tea is also available and each guest will leave with take home gifts – guest may also have the opportunity to meet with Aurora at this tea.
  1. The Dining Plan – Depending on how much your family eats, this one could either be a splurge or it could actually save you money. Purchasing the dining plan gives you the opportunity to not have to worry about the cost of food while you are actually on vacation. All of your meals are pre-paid and you use credits at dining locations. There are three different tiers of dining plans. The lowest, the quick service plan offers 2 quick service meals and 1 snack per person per night of your stay. The plus dining plan offers 1 table service, 1 quick service, and 1 snack per person per night of your stay. And the deluxe dining plan offers three meals of any combination, and two snacks per person per night of your stay. Each guest on the dining plan also receives a refillable mug. My family always uses the dining plan because of the convenience of having meals paid for already, it also gives us the opportunity to dine at places that we would not if we were to pay out of pocket. This is a great splurge and it certainly makes a difference in your vacation.
  1. Take a Tour – There are so many behind the scenes tours that there is bound to be something that interests you. From Behind the Seeds at Epcot where you can learn about what goes on in the Land Pavilion, to the Wild Africa Trek where you go behind the scenes in Animal Kingdom on a private safari, to The Keys to Kingdom where you go behind the scenes at Magic Kingdom. There really is something for everyone. My husband and I went on the Wild Africa Trek and it was amazing, it was completely worth the extra money that we spent on it. All of these tours will certainly add magic to your trip.

Family sentenced in Walt Disney World ticket scam

WDW

Eileen Hightower along with her children Samuel Velasquez Jr, and Sabrina Velasquez of Kissimmee FL, accompanied by her niece Jennifer Cancel of Hartford Ct were recently sentenced to prison for theft and fraud. They were ordered to pay $107,000.00 in restitution for an identity theft scam involving stealing personal information and selling Walt Disney World tickets.

They previously pleaded guilty and were sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge G. Kendall Sharp to at least 3 years in federal prisonbut Hightower got an additional 10 months for her part in the scam.

The group stole personal information to obtain fake drivers licenses and credit cards, then they used those credit cards to buy Walt Disney World theme park tickets. Once purchased they sold the tickets to illegal ticket resalers in Kissimmee.

U.S. Attorney’s office said that in a few months more than $100,000.00 were bought and resold illegally.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is making a halt on April 4, 2016 for a big refurbishment. In an effort to give you a better Old West experience, it is scheduled to close for about 4 months and due to reopen July 16, 2016.

The last major refurbishment on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was in 2012. It’s always a slight bummer when one of our favorite rides takes a little break for a makeover, but next time you come back you will make it a must do to check it out! Remember to take note of this and other refurbishments when you plan on coming to Disney to avoid any less than magical moments!

Here is our current Disney Refurbishments for January:
