Major Milestone for Aladdin on Broadway and a Tribute to Howard Ashman

The stage of the New Amsterdam Theatre shimmered a little brighter on Saturday night as Aladdin, the lavish Disney musical adaptation, celebrated its 4,000th performance on Broadway. But the evening was more than a milestone—it was a moving tribute to the late Howard Ashman, the lyricist whose visionary work helped usher in a new era of animated musical storytelling.

The date, May 17, coincided with what would have been Ashman’s 75th birthday, and Disney Theatrical Group marked the occasion with a special third-act celebration honoring his indelible contributions to the American musical canon. Though Ashman died in 1991, his legacy continues to resonate through the songs he penned for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors, and Aladdin—collaborations that reshaped both Broadway and Hollywood.

First opening on March 20, 2014, Aladdin quickly established itself as a box-office juggernaut, earning critical praise and solidifying its place among Broadway’s 15 longest-running productions, alongside Disney’s own Beauty and the Beast. In a review for The New York Times, the show was described as “fabulous and extravagant,” and it has gone on to break 17 house records at the New Amsterdam Theatre. With 11 productions across four continents and more than 21 million theatergoers welcomed worldwide, Aladdin remains an enduring symbol of Disney’s theatrical ambition and global reach. Current stagings include productions in Tokyo, Madrid, and Seoul.

Produced by Disney Theatrical Group under the leadership of Andrew Flatt, Anne Quart, and Thomas Schumacher, Aladdin features music by Alan Menken—an eight-time Oscar and Tony Award winner—lyrics by Ashman and Tim Rice, and a book by Chad Beguelin. Casey Nicholaw, a two-time Tony winner known for The Book of Mormon, serves as both director and choreographer.

The celebratory performance featured a third-act tribute to Ashman, with appearances from performers whose careers and lives have been touched by his work. Among them were Caleb B. Barnett, currently starring as the Genie; cast members from Little Shop of Horrors, including Khadija Sanko, Ariana Groover, and Salome Smith; Kyra Belle Johnson and Fergie Philippe from Disney’s forthcoming North American tour of Beauty and the Beast; and Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Alan Menken, Ashman’s longtime collaborator and one of the evening’s most honored guests, also took the stage.

The animated version of Aladdin, released in 1992, marked the last Disney film to feature lyrics by Ashman. It became the year’s top-grossing film and won two Academy Awards, including Best Original Song for “A Whole New World.” Its stage adaptation retains all five songs from the original soundtrack, supplemented by additional numbers written for the theatrical version.

The performance was both a celebration and an elegy, a testament to the enduring enchantment of a story that has captivated generations—and to the lyrical genius of a man whose work continues to shape the landscape of musical theater.

Get Ready to Indulge! Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Treats Are Here!

With 70+ new foods and beverages arriving for the Disneyland 70th anniversary there was not enough time to try even a quarter of them during our recent visit. Here are a few of the sweeter foods we tried and what we thought.

Related – New 70th Anniversary Cups, Popcorn Containers and More Now Available at Disneyland

IMG Original

70th Stuff

The celebration version of the “grey stuff”. The 70th Stuff is a shortbread cookie with a cookies & cream cake, fresh raspberry and raspberry jam, surrounded with white chocolate mousse and topped with colored sprinkles. This treat is extremely sweet. Almost too sweet and that’s saying something coming from me. If you get a bite with a little bit of everything mixed in, it’s very tasty but there’s not enough cake and filling to get a good blend in every bite.

If you want to try the 70th Stuff yourself, you’ll find it at Red Rose Taverne for $7.29.

IMG

House-Filled Celebration Beignet

Beignets are a must-eat snack when visiting Disneyland! A new one has arrived at Tiana’s Palace just for the 70th anniversary. It’s filled with raspberry mousse and topped with blue buttercream glaze, an edible candle, and sprinkles.

Overall, this treat was good. The filling isn’t as spread out inside the beignet so one side was empty while the other was very full. Also, be careful with the buttercream! The blue will stain your fingers for a bit. The beignet is $5.99.

IMG

Pineapple Upside Down Sundae

Dole Whip fans will want to try this new, cool treat! At The Tropical Hideaway you’ll find a new sundae. It is Dole Whip pineapple, caramel drizzle and pineapple upside down cake, topped with a maraschino cherry. It’s available during the 70th anniversary for $8.49.

As someone who does not like pineapple, I was surprised at how much I liked this sundae! The caramel drizzle sounded odd but tasted really good with the pineapple soft serve.

IMG

Peach Cobbler Funnel Cake Fries

One of my favorite treats from the new 70th foods is the peach cobbler funnel cake fries from Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree. The funnel cake fries are rolled in cinnamon and sugar and topped with peach topping, vanilla ice cream, and streusel. You can get it for $9.99.

Oh boy this dessert was so yummy! We shared it between two of us. It was sweet without over doing it. The peach topping was warm and the ice cream was cold and it all blended lovely.

IMG

Mickey-Shaped Confetti Waffles

For this next treat we headed into Disney California Adventure. Schmoozies is offering special Mickey waffles during the anniversary celebration. The waffles are stuffed with strawberry filling and topped with powdered sugar, sprinkles, and strawberry whipped cream. You get two waffles for $10.99.

I shared the waffles but wish I’d had both to myself. The filling was delicious and if you want to, you can top them with syrup as well. Watch out for the powdered sugar as it can get messy!

IMG

70th Celebration Churro

Our final treat can be found in both parks. The 70th Celebration Churro is a churro rolled in ube sugar and topped with marbled blue raspberry icing and sprinkles. I really enjoyed this churro. The flavors were great but some of the sprinkles are just too big and crunchy.

Do any of these treats sound good to you?

First up, we gotta talk about the Minnie ears. These things are pastel perfection with blue and pink all over. But get this, the ears have a cool diamond pattern with little Italy logos, hidden Mickeys, and even tiny gelato cones, tiramisu, and cannolis stitched in! Plus, the headband says “Italy Pavilion EPCOT World Showcase” in red, and the bow is blue and white stripes with a cute “Cremosa” gelato charm in the middle. Seriously, so cute!

And for all you kitchen wizards out there, they’ve got a gelato apron! It’s pink with light blue trim and ruffly stripes at the bottom. “When in Rome, Italy” is splashed across the front with that iconic gelato pic, and the big pocket has that same diamond pattern with all the treats. How fun would it be whipping up some goodies in this?

If you’re more of a hat person, check out their new baseball cap. It’s a chill light blue with a gelato cone and “Dolce” written across it in red cursive. And get this, it even says “Sono Extra” in tiny letters! “Italy” is stitched on the brim, and instead of a regular strap, it’s got a blue and white striped bow in the back. So unique!

Italy Pavilion Gelato Collection

For something you can wear every day, there’s a gray “When in Rome, Italy” t-shirt. It’s got the EPCOT World Showcase logo and a super cute gelato cone with a Mickey waffle piece stuck on top! Seriously, a Mickey waffle on gelato? Genius!

Need something to carry all your park goodies? They’ve got a “When in Rome” tote bag with cool pink, white, and red color blocks. The front has all the classic Italian desserts – tiramisu, cannoli, and that same adorable gelato cone. Of course, it says “When in Rome” and has a little “Italy” logo. The other side has the usual Italy Pavilion logo, and the handles are a nice off-white.

Now, this little dish is just begging for a scoop (or two!) of gelato. It’s got that yellow waffle cone pattern and the striped Italy Pavilion logo. And the best part? It has a red Mickey icon sticking out as a little handle! The back even has the “When in Rome” saying on a matching striped oval.

To keep your drinks cool, they’ve got a gelato plastic tumbler that matches the shirt! The inside looks like a waffle cone, and the front has the Italy Pavilion logo in red on white and blue stripes. The lid is all swirly like gelato and even comes with a straw.

And last but not least, for your at-home Italian feasts, there’s a set of four plates. They all have this fun pattern with ads for Italian treats in blue, pink, and white. The bottoms are plain white.

Seriously, this whole Italy Pavilion Gelato Collection is just too sweet! If you’re heading to Epcot anytime soon, you have to check it out!

Seriously, you have to see how adorable they look. Mickey’s rocking some green and yellow lederhosen and looks like he’s having a blast playing the accordion. And Minnie? She’s just precious in a green dress with a red and yellow bow. Of course, they both have their iconic yellow shoes on – can’t forget those!

The backpack itself is pretty neat too. The front has this cool cottage-style clock that isn’t just for show – it’s actually a whole separate little zip-up pocket! Above it, “Germany” is embroidered in this fancy script font. The main part of the bag has a simple cream-colored inside, perfect for stashing all your park goodies. Plus, there are little slip pockets on each side, just like those popular Loungefly mini backpacks, which is always handy.

Now, the back of the backpack is a solid red, and the straps are adjustable and match in red and yellow. As a little extra touch, you’ll find the EPCOT | World Showcase logo printed in yellow near the bottom.

Built for Magic in Motion

Behind the seams, this redesign was no simple fashion show. It was a carefully crafted collaboration driven by cast member feedback and performance needs. The new custodial costumes are packed with thoughtful upgrades:

  • Moisture-wicking and sun-protective fabrics – Perfect for keeping cool under that Florida sun
  • Stretchy materials and adjustable pant cuffs – Because comfort is key during long shifts on the go
  • Extra pockets – A custodial MVP feature for keeping supplies handy
  • Vibrant new colors – A crisp white and teal combo that’s both sharp and distinctly Disney

Most importantly, the signature sweeping Mickey Mouse logo — a beloved symbol among the custodial team — has remained, paying homage to the heart of the original design.

A Custom Fit for Every Cast Member

“Cast feedback was so important to us when designing these new operational costumes because our cast are everything,” shared Nicole, Costume Designer with Disney Live Entertainment. “We want to make sure they feel comfortable and confident while making magic.”

And the magic isn’t just in the fabric. Costume Development Manager Danielle worked with a women-owned hat company (founded by a former optometrist!) to find a headwear solution that’s safe, stylish, and comfortable — even for cast members who wear glasses or have various hairstyles. Adjustable and inclusive? Check and check.

From Main Street to backstage, the cast members who bring Disney to life deserve to feel as iconic as the parks themselves — and this costume makeover is a step in exactly that direction.

Disney Lakeshore Lodge Construction Update from the Ft Wilderness Resort Disney Lakeshore Lodge Construction Update from the Ft Wilderness Resort

There’s a brand-new neighbor rising along the shoreline at Walt Disney World, and we just hoofed it over from Fort Wilderness to check on the latest progress! The upcoming Disney Vacation Club property, Lakeshore Lodge, is well underway—and thanks to its towering presence, it’s hard to miss from several spots around Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

Related: Walt Disney World Extends Disability Access Service Validity to One Year

From our recent visit, the structure is really starting to take shape. As you can see in the construction photos, the framework of the main building is already several stories high, with window placements and outer structural elements well defined. Crews are actively working on what looks like the exterior sheathing and balcony placements—this thing is going vertical fast!

🏗️ A Lodge with a View (and a Presence!)

Located right next to Fort Wilderness (just west of Pioneer Hall), Lakeshore Lodge is being built in the same general footprint once occupied by the now-canceled Reflections: A Disney Lakeside Lodge. This updated resort appears to carry a similar aesthetic: modern rustic charm meets lakeside serenity, with large glass windows and natural wood tones—designed to blend in with the surrounding wilderness, while offering upscale amenities to Disney Vacation Club members and resort guests.

Lakeshore-Lodge-1024x576
Lakeshore Lodge Concept Art

From the grassy pathways near Tri-Circle-D Ranch and Pioneer Hall, the lodge’s size is already visually impactful. Even with privacy scrims and foliage-themed construction fencing, the multi-story resort peeks out boldly over the treetops, shifting the visual landscape of the formerly secluded Fort Wilderness area.

🗺️ Lakeshore Lodge Location

Lakeshore Lodge is perfectly situated between the Settlement area at Fort Wilderness and Bay Lake, nestled into the woods but clearly positioned to offer water views and easy boat access to Magic Kingdom. And while the surrounding trail paths and horse stables remain peaceful, it’s clear that the area is evolving into a more interconnected deluxe resort hub.

Disney Lakeshore Lodge Construction Update from the Ft Wilderness Resort

🎨 A Look at the Future

Disney previously released concept art for Lakeshore Lodge (included below), and if that vision holds true, we’re in for a beautiful blend of nature and storytelling. The concept shows a striking A-frame-style entrance with copper and wood accents, art inspired by forest creatures, and DVC-style accommodations that will likely rival the cabins at Copper Creek and Boulder Ridge.

While no official opening date has been confirmed, the pace of construction suggests Disney is moving full steam ahead, likely targeting a late 2025 or 2026 debut.

Disney World Increases Disability Access Service Validity to One Year

Effective today, May 18, 2025, Walt Disney World has announced an extension to the validity period of its Disability Access Service (DAS), increasing it from the previous 240 days to a full year (365 days) from the date of registration. This update offers greater convenience for eligible guests who visit the parks regularly by reducing the frequency of required re-enrollment.

Related – Guests No Longer Allowed to Pin Trade Outside Shops in Epcot

Disability Access Service

This change follows two other recent adjustments to the DAS program. In February 2025, Disney extended the advance registration window for DAS from 30 to 60 days prior to a park visit. Additionally, in late January 2025, the park revised its DAS policy language, removing the word “only” from the eligibility statement concerning developmental disabilities like autism, potentially broadening the scope of interpretation for qualification.

The DAS program is designed to accommodate guests with developmental disabilities, such as autism, who are unable to wait in traditional queues for extended periods. Upon approval, eligible guests can request return times for attractions via the My Disney Experience app or at Guest Experience locations, allowing them to wait outside the physical line.

daschanges

It’s important to note that current policy mandates registration through a live video chat with a Disney Cast Member, available daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. In-person DAS registration is no longer offered at the parks.

Key aspects of the DAS policy that remain unchanged include the focus on developmental disabilities for eligibility, a party size limit of the registered guest plus three additional individuals, and the allowance of one active DAS return time at any given moment, in conjunction with a virtual queue boarding group, if applicable.

Pixar Magic Rides Again! “Better Together” Parade Returns to DCA

Get ready for a Pixar party! As Disneyland commemorates its 70th anniversary, the vibrant “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” parade has joyfully returned to the streets of Disney California Adventure.

Related – Wondrous Journeys RETURNS for Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary

Featuring a vibrant cast of nearly 30 beloved characters from various Pixar films, the daytime parade “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” first premiered at Disney California Adventure during Pixar Fest in 2024 and has been confirmed to return as part of the exciting Disneyland 70th anniversary festivities.

mei

The “Better Together” parade kicks off with a whimsical float resembling an oversized Luxo Jr. lamp, playfully adorned with stickers referencing the Pixar films featured. A notable update to the parade is the “Turning Red” float, now proudly displaying a large pink sign with yellow lettering that reads “Live Red Panda Mei.”

The adventure continues with the “Up!” float, where Russell hitches a ride on Kevin. Carl stands proudly atop a structure bursting with blue and purple blooms, with Dug playfully positioned at the back. The energy shifts as the parade moves into the “Soul” section, marked by a float filled with the spirited musicians who represent Joe Gardner’s students.

Beyond the “Turning Red” addition, “Better Together” has also refreshed the “Inside Out” float. The memory orbs beneath Joy and Sadness now showcase a noticeably brighter palette with a wider range of shades, perhaps teasing the expanded emotional landscape of “Inside Out 2.” Continuing the parade’s journey through Pixar stories, the next float vividly recreates the town of Portorosso from “Luca,” featuring Giulia riding her scooter over a wave while Luca and Alberto are playfully immersed in the water.

incredibles

Following the high-energy appearance of Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, and Frozone in their individual “Incredibles” vehicles, the parade transitions to the heartwarming world of “Toy Story.” Here, Woody takes center stage, perched within a yellow toy dump truck creatively painted with cloud motifs and sprinkled with memorable quotes from the films.

The grand finale of the parade is a vibrant float embracing the collective spirit of Pixar. Featuring the recognizable Luxo ball on both ends, this float unites a charming assortment of characters from different Pixar adventures, such as Miguel from “Coco,” the dynamic duo of Buzz Lightyear and Jessie from “Toy Story,” and the beloved monster pals Mike and Sully from “Monsters Inc.”

Even as Disneyland prepares for its seasonal Halloween and Christmas offerings, leading to a temporary pause for “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” and “Wondrous Journeys” (both slated to return), the park’s 70th Anniversary Celebration will continue to delight visitors all the way through the summer of 2026.

Magic Returns! “Wondrous Journeys” Back for Disneyland’s 70th

As part of the dazzling festivities commemorating Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, the beloved “Wondrous Journeys” fireworks spectacular has once again illuminated the night sky above Sleeping Beauty Castle. This breathtaking display, a signature element of the celebration, fills the air with soaring music, vibrant bursts of color, and dazzling pyrotechnics, creating an unforgettable experience for guests of all ages.

The captivating “Wondrous Journeys” fireworks spectacular first premiered in January 2023 at Disneyland Resort, serving as a key element of the resort’s celebration of The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary. The show is beautifully underscored by an original anthem, “It’s Wondrous,” which seamlessly blends with beloved classic Disney melodies, creating a truly enchanting auditory experience.

Adding to the excitement of its return for Disneyland’s 70th anniversary is the reappearance of two iconic characters: Baymax and the Blue Fairy. Both had previously graced the skies during the show’s initial run, delighting audiences with their flyovers, but were absent during its spring 2024 engagement. Their return promises to bring an extra touch of magic and nostalgia to the anniversary celebration.

IMG

When Mirabel utters the heartfelt words, “I will never be good enough,” audiences will now witness a dazzling display of new fireworks in “Wondrous Journeys,” a departure from the flame effects used in its original iteration. This substitution is a direct result of the temporary suspension of certain fire effects park-wide, implemented following the Maleficent dragon fire incident during “Fantasmic!” in April 2023. Beyond this alteration, the “Wondrous Journeys” show remains consistent with its prior presentations.

IMG

Wondrous Journeys is performed each night at 9:30 p.m. PT.
