Meet the all powerful Baby Jack-Jack from Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2!

Meet the all powerful Baby Jack-Jack from Disney Pixar's Incredibles 2!

Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead. Please Proceed at YOUR OWN RISK.

Jack-Jack Parr likes to sit back with his bottle and hear a good bedtime story from his dad, Mr. Incredible. Well-versed in baby talk with a penchant for throwing food, Jack-Jack seems like the typical toddler. Looks can be deceiving, as he may turn out to be the most powerful super in the Parr Family.

As we already know, Jack-Jack surprised us all with powers of his own at the end of the first film. Yet, the rest of his family missed the mayhem, so we didn’t get a chance to see him at his full potential. “The family has no idea he has powers,” says producer John Walker. “At the end of the first film the audience gets the first glimpse of what Jack-Jack can do—like bursting into flames and turning into a demon baby—but the Parrs didn’t see that all happening.”

He’s just a baby, and his powers reflect his needs, wants, and ever-changing emotions. Which is a real challenge for even the best parent. “Anyone who’s taken care of a regular baby day in and day out knows that it can be exhausting,” says writer/director Brad Bird. “Toddlers have curiosity and mobility—but zero judgment. And Jack-Jack isn’t just trying out one power—he has a multitude of powers going on.”

Jack-Jack is given a bigger opportunity in Incredibles 2, as he has a larger role. Because of that, filmmakers wanted to do everything they could to let him shine in his big on screen moments. “We studied how babies move,” says supervising animator Tony Fucile. “They have all kinds of quirks that only careful observation revealed—the way they walk on their toes or catch themselves when they fall. There is a blend of athleticism, when they can control themselves—and awkward wobbling, when they can’t.”

Jack-Jack was given a full makeover, including a chubbier look, added articulation, and more expressive features. They all come into play when he unleashes his awesome powers.

Here some of Jack-Jack’s powers, so far:

• Bursting into flames/pyrokinesis
• Invisibility
• Laser vision
• Levitation and the ability to hang out on the ceiling and walls
• Multiplication – splitting into multiple Jack-Jacks
• Phasing – moving through closed doors
• Projecting bolts of electricity
• Telekinesis
• Teleportation
• Transforming into heavy metal
• Turning into a demon baby

During a special presentation at Pixar Studios, we learned from the animators how they created the effects for Jack-Jack’s powers. According to effects supervisor, Bill Watral, many of Jack-Jack’s powers are effects driven. But achieving the actual effects wasn’t the toughest task the team addressed. “One of our biggest challenges with Jack-Jack was maintaining the look of the baby whether he’s turning to goo or on fire,” says Watral. “No one wants to see a burning baby, for instance, so we spent a lot of time making sure he was always appealing and funny.”

Technological advances allowed Watral and his team to enhance the character’s look within effects like flames. “Reading Jack-Jack’s face was really important,” he says. “We created a shading treatment so that his facial expressions were clear: ‘I’m on fire but that’s OK! This is fun!’ We don’t want anyone to forget that this is a baby with powers. The effect shouldn’t outshine the humor, which can be harder to achieve than a big explosion.”

Just when you think you’ve seen everything, then comes Jack-Jack’s demon transformation. “Anyone who’s been around little kids knows that toddlers can be awful when they’re having a tantrum,” says supervising animator Dave Mullins. “So seeing that personified in demon baby with big teeth and muscles is just perfect because that’s what it feels like when your kid goes off the rails.”

Filmmakers made a separate model to represent demon baby Jack-Jack. “We start with Jack-Jack as he’s getting mad,” says Mullins. “He starts turning red and on one frame of film, we switch to the other model that’s been scaled down in size and color, and scale him up to the full demon baby over the next few frames. It’s seamless.”

“Incredibles 2” is now playing in theaters. Read our movie review here.

Mr. Incredible’s Incredible Waffle Recipe

Incredible Waffle Recipe

Mr. Incredible is saving the day in a new way, with his Incredible waffle recipe. Incredibles 2 premiered this past weekend and audiences were able to see Bob Parr (aka Mr. Incredible) facing a whole new challenge: caring for the Parr children.

While Elastigirl is chasing down villains, Bob is stationed at the home front with a few tricks up his sleeve including his incredible waffle recipe.  And now you can whip up a batch right at home with Bob’s Incredible waffle recipe.

Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup unsalted butter (melted)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Separate the egg yolk from the egg white.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the egg white until stiff peaks form.
  3. In another large bowl, mix the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, baking powder, cornstarch, sugar, and salt.
  4. Add the wet ingredients: buttermilk, melted butter, egg yolk, and vanilla extract. Stir to combine but leave batter lumpy.
  5. Carefully fold the beaten egg white into the batter just until combined. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes.
  6. Heat up your waffle iron and cook according to your waffle iron’s directions until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Allow everyone to enjoy an incredible waffle immediately with butter and syrup. Makes about 4 large waffles.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Tops $2 Billion in the Box Office Worldwide

$2 Billion in the Box Office

Avengers: Infinity War surpassed $2 billion in the box office worldwide. Forbes reports “weekend totals were a bit higher than estimated, giving the MCU flick a $1.999.471b cume as of Sunday. It earned another $921,000 on Monday (-21% from last Monday), which is more than enough to get it over the finish line. It has done the job in 48 days of release. It took one day longer than Avatar and six fewer days than Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Perhaps all this hype has something to do with the fact that Avengers: Infinity War is said to be the culmination of a story we’ve seen play out over 18 other films. Thanos (Josh Brolin), who we first saw in the post-credits scene from The Avengers, finally emerged from the shadows and wants to wipe out half of the existence by collecting six Infinity Stones.

And the cast is star-studded, assembling nearly all of the Marvel heroes to date for what is sure to be an epic battle. Those signed on for this fight include Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

Becoming the 34th film to break $1 billion back in May, Avengers: Infinity War joins other titles like Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Titanic, Jurassic World, and Captain America: Civil War.

Incredibles 2 Claims Biggest Animated Film Opening Weekend Ever

Incredibles 2 Opening Weekend

The Incredibles 2 has been shattering records at the box office this weekend. After the dust settled from the multitude of Pixar fans flocking to theaters, Incredibles 2 can now claim the highest animation debut of all time! The $180 million in domestic ticket sales crushed the projected estimates of  $125 million to $140 million that analysts were originally predicting.

To put this in perspective, Finding Dory was the previous reigning champ with opening weekend ticket sales totaling $135 million in 2016 (not adjusted for inflation). The live-action version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast had a $116 million opening weekend for its debut last year.

In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.

Spaceship Earth LEGO Ideas Set Up for Voting!

Spaceship Earth LEGO

Disney inspired LEGO sets are fun to build, fun to create and fun to collect!  Thanks to LEGO Ideas you can now submit your own creations, like this Spaceship Earth LEGO set!

We recently told you about LEGO Ideas and how you can submit your own creation, get votes and, maybe, have you creation sold and marketed by LEGO.  If you’re not into creating, you can also go and vote for favorites, like this Spaceship Earth set by Russ Cole!

Spaceship Earth LEGO

Not familiar with LEGO Ideas? Here’s the general concept!

  1. Share your ideas for new LEGO sets!  Create an awesome model, take great photos, and write a convincing project description, and people won’t be able to help but support you. Not so fast, though! Before you put two bricks together, check out the Project Guidelines and House Rules to see the types of ideas we allow.
  2. Gather Support—10,000 supporters qualifies your project for review!  Tell everyone you know (and even those you don’t know) to support your project. 10,000 is a big number, but it’s doable if you have a great project and some old-fashioned persistence. The best results come from knowing how to ask for support from the right fan sites, blogs, and online communities.
  3. LEGO Review—the LEGO Review Board chooses which projects become new LEGO sets!  After reaching 10k, your project enters a special phase called the LEGO Review. A review board of set designers and marketing representatives evaluates projects according to our review criteria and hand-picks projects to become new LEGO Ideas sets. We can’t make everything, but every project in review gets a fair shot.
  4. New LEGO Product—our team transforms your design into an actual LEGO product sold around the world!  Projects selected in the LEGO Review go into production. You give input to our professional LEGO designers, whose job it is to create the final set based on your project. Once complete, it goes to the factory, then it’s shipped around the world and released for sale. You’re featured in set materials, receive a royalty on sales, and are recognized as the product creator. Your supporters can now own the LEGO set they helped make happen on LEGO Ideas.

You’ll want to check out full rules and policies before you submit a creation!

So head over to LEGO Ideas to vote for your favorite Disney inspired LEGO set!  Who knows, you might just see it in the store one day!

Tour de Turtles Event At Disney’s Vero Beach Scheduled For July

Tour de Turtles Event At Disney's Vero Beach Scheduled For July

Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, located only 2 hours southeast of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, has guests that return year after year. And I’m not just talking about human guests. Sea turtles use the beaches for their nests. They lay eggs and bury them in the sand. Once these eggs hatch, the baby sea turtles make a break for the ocean, using the natural light to guide them. Tour de Turtles is an event that tracks the migration of these sea turtles.

Beginning at 7am on July 28th, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort will begin hosting fun family activities centered around sea turtle conservation. Guests will be able to learn all about ways to help protect these amazing ocean creatures. Satellite transmitters will be attached to the shells of the sea turtles and they will set off on a race around the world. The transmitters send back important information about the turtles’ migration habits, helping scientists with efforts to maintain the turtle population.

Tour de Turtles is an incredibly popular event for guests. So much so that Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is fully booked for this event. To learn more about the Tour de Turtles, please visit www.tourdeturtles.org. You can also visit https://verobeach.disney.go.com/ or contact your travel agent to learn more about Disney’s Vero Beach Resort for future trips!

If you aren’t already planning to attend this year’s Tour de Turtles event, Disney Parks Blog will be live streaming it! Be sure to tune in to see all of the turtle fun at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.

Magic Comes to Elementary Schools with the Disney Musicals in Schools Program

Disney Musicals in Schools

Disney Musicals in Schools

Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS) was developed by the Disney Theatrical Group to bring theatrical programs to underprivileged elementary schools around the United States and even in London. Recently with Los Angeles’s Center Theatre Group, at the Ahmanson Theatre, 300 students participating in the program came together for an unforgettable performance.

For years, Disney Theatrical Productions has licensed “junior” versions of beloved titles such as Aladdin and The Lion King to school groups and professional theaters. But in many parts of the country, schools simply don’t have the resources to stage a musical or provide theatrical education to their students, so in 2010, Disney Theatrical Group decided to do something about that. “Here we were in New York City, in the heart of Times Square, and schools in our own backyard in Brooklyn, in Queens, in the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan just weren’t producing these shows,” says Lisa Mitchell, education director for Disney Theatrical Group.

The Disney Musicals in Schools program was launched with the goal of developing sustainable musical theater programs in schools where there previously were none. Participating schools receive the performance rights to one of Disney’s half-hour musicals for kids, along with the corresponding show kit materials. But what really sets DMIS apart, Mitchell explains, is the support that the schools and their educators receive when they become involved with the program. “We send in a pair of what we call ‘teaching artists’ who are professional musical theater artists and also professional educators,” Mitchell says. The teaching artists work with the students but, more importantly, they’re mentoring the school educators and teachers. “So over the course of the six-month process, the teachers learn how to become music directors, directors, choreographers, producers, stage managers and designers, so that when we’re not there in the future they’ve got the training necessary to sustain this kind of work in the school for year after year after year.”

The program has been an unequivocal success. Just eight years in, DMIS has expanded to 18 cities—including the first international program, which launched in London this year—and some 30,000 kids have now performed in their first school musical through the program. The program culminates in each city with an annual Student Share Celebration that brings together all of the participating schools at storied venues such as Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre and Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. During the event, hundreds of children take the stage for a spectacular night of song, dance and, of course, Disney magic—beginning with a song written expressly for the Disney Musicals in Schools program by the legendary composer Alan Menken, “It Starts with a Dream,” performed together by all of the young actors.

As Mitchell has watched DMIS grow, she has marveled at how each city and theatre company is able to make the program their own. The Las Vegas DMIS program, done in partnership with Smith Center for the Performing Arts, features a number of teaching artists who perform with Cirque du Soleil, giving that city’s choreography an almost acrobatic-like quality; while in Nashville, shows created alongside the Tennessee Performing Arts Center feature musical talent that reflects the world-class music education program offered in the city’s public school system. “One of the things that surprises me most is how you can have two dozen versions of The Lion King take place on school stages around the country, and every single one of them—despite having the same script and the same score and the same plot—is completely unique to that school and that community,” Mitchell says.

CLICK HERE to see a video from the performance!

As the video below demonstrates, the young DMIS participants learn performance techniques through the program that they’ll be able to draw upon as their schools’ theater education programs continue to grow. But Mitchell emphasizes, “More important than the stage skills they’re learning are the life skills: collaboration, empathy, creativity and communication.”

Educator Gabby Mendoza, who participated in Centre Theatre Group’s inaugural year with Disney Musicals in Schools alongside her students at Humphreys Avenue Elementary School in Los Angeles, stresses that the program has had a transformative effect on students. “The students have discovered so much about the arts and themselves. It’s been a true journey, finding confidence week after week,” she says, and she notes that the teachers have reaped immeasurable benefits from the program, as well. “We’ve all been able to learn from each other, lean on each other, and discover strengths and passions in ourselves as educators. When we put our vision together, [we’ve seen] the powerful impact that the arts can have.”
