Everyone Is Talking About Epcot's 2nd International Festival of the Arts

Beginning January 12th artists, performers and chefs gathered to celebrate Epcot’s 2nd International Festival of Arts at the Walt Disney World Resort. Each day offered the opportunity for guests to explore the arts through musical performances, art demonstrations, sampling the culinary arts and even participating in interactive workshops.

Live entertainment included performances by Broadway stars such as Kevin Massey and Jennifer Gambatese. “I would describe it as 28 minutes of pure delight!” said Gambatese of the half-hour shows based on Broadway favorites such as Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. Massey, who performed alongside her, felt after a long day in the park it was the perfect chance for guests to sit back, relax and enjoy some familiar and some new tunes.

And what would a festival at Epcot be without a plethora of tasty treats? Most of the cuisine at all 13 “Food Studios” looks too good to eat, but surely that doesn’t stop anyone! Epcot’s Culinary Director Gregg Hannon stated, “For this festival, we have redesigned our presentation to make them more-picturesque, more sophisticated, so that when you get your dish, it will be something that you would want to take a picture of, like a piece of art.”

Leaders were thrilled with the growth Epcot’s International Festival of Arts has taken on this year. Melissa Valiquette, Epcot Vice President, stated, “It’s bigger, brighter and better than ever!”and General Manager, Dave Kesting was quoted saying, “This year is all about more- more days, more artists, more food . . . . There’s so much for everybody this year; it’s a festival for guests of all ages.”

The festival runs until February 19th, so be sure to check it out before it’s too late.

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Launches 'Grow and Glow' Program For Students

On the first day of Chinese New Year, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) announced the launch of a two-year pilot youth program “Grow and Glow,” with the Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College located in Tai O on Lantau Island. Through the program, students will be given opportunities to perform at HKDL and get to know different areas of work in the resort. They will also be encouraged to think positively through sharing sessions with HKDL’s young cast members.

At the CNY ceremony, the lion dance team formed from the school’s students and alumni, which was the champion of an inter-school competition, performed traditional lion dance to share blessings with park guests for the New Year.

Eric Yuon Fuk-lung, Principal of Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College, said, “We want to bring positive change to students and motivate them to excel at school and to fill their lives with goals for the future. Through the program with HKDL, we hope students gain out-of-classroom experiences that will be beneficial to their career planning.” He also gave thanks to HKDL for encouraging young people to be well-rounded in their development and to pursue their own dreams.

Pursuing dreams with change

Samuel Lau, managing director of HKDL, said, “Principal Yuon’s altruistic efforts in nurturing students are remarkable, and deserve our support. We hope through this joint school program, we could open up the horizon of the students in exploring future possibilities.”

“We have a lot of young people among our front-line cast members. Teenagers will shine when they follow their dreams. They will then gain the confidence and the strength to strive for a bright future,” he added.

Partnership with the community

HKDL is dedicated to supporting youth development through providing job opportunities for the local community and organizing community programs with different NGOs, schools, hospitals and more. The resort continues its efforts in encouraging young people to make their dreams come true, and to face challenges with positivity and joy. Since HKDL opened in 2005, the youth-related community programs supported by the resort, in the form of scholarships, youth community programs and internships, have benefited more than 7,000 young people in Hong Kong.

Guests visiting Epcot through the beginning of March will be able to enjoy discounts, special offers, and more at the merchandise events that are scheduled to take place over the next few days.

Here’s a list of the events that will take place later this month (be sure to keep in mind that the special events mentioned below may be modified and/or canceled without notice):

  • Feb. 16-17: Laila fragrances and beauty products with appearance by creator Geir Ness, 12-6 p.m. at the Norway pavilion – The Puffin’s Roost

Wine Bar George Slated For Spring Opening at Disney Springs

Here at Chip and Co. we’ve been following the progress of Wine Bar George, the latest impressive addition to Disney Springs’ culinary line-up with fevered excitement.  That’s why we are pleased to report that it looks like this new lounge will be opening its doors at some point this Spring!

This new venture created by Master Sommelier George Miliotes will be the only Master Sommelier-led wine bar in the state of Florida and will offer a unique experience that includes wine education, special visits form renowned winemakers and a wonderful menu offering an eclectic array of small and shareable plates, cheese and charcuterie boards and desserts! In addition, the location has now named its new Executive Chef- Ron Rupert!

Rubert began his culinary career at Walt Disney World in 1988 and was part of the opening team at California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort where he teamed up with Miliotes. Rupert was also part of the opening team at Jiko – The Cooking Place and Ariel’s at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort.

 

In addition to an amazing menu, The 210 seat Wine Bar will offer more than 100 wine selections in a setting modelled after a wine maker’s home estate. Varieties on offer will include both well-known and up-and-coming wines handpicked by Miliotes himself.

Minnie Van Service is Expanding to More Disney World Resorts

The Minnie Vans are quickly making their way around the Disney resorts! Starting Monday, February 19th, the Minnie Vans will start picking up Guests staying at Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter resorts. 

Here is the full list of participating Disney World resorts with Minnie Van availability:

  • Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
  • Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa
  • Disney’s Yacht Club Resort
  • Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
  • Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
  • Disney’s Contemporary Resort
  • Disney’s Carribean Beach Resort
  • Disney’s Pop Century Resort
  • Disney’s Beach Club Resort
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • Disney’s Boardwalk Resort
  • Disney’s Old Key West Resort
  • Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort Campground

For those still unfamiliar with the Minnie Vans, they were launched by Disney in 2017 as an alternative to Uber and standard Taxis.  They are available for guests staying at select Disney resorts and remaining within Disney World property during your journey.  The vans are booked via Lyft for a one-way fare of $25.

World of Disney Store at Disney Springs is Scaled Down as Refurbishment Work Begins

As we first reported last month, the World of Disney Store at Disney Springs will be scaled down temporarily as Disney starts a phased refurbishment that will see a re-imagining of the store’s interior.  Renovations are starting this week and visitors are already reporting that many sections of the shop are already closed to the public.

Locals are reporting that the store has been scaled down to a fraction of its normal size.  Though the open sections are still heaving with Disney merchandise, the stock is definitely limited compared to the items regularly on offer.  However, Disney shoppers should remember that to compensate for the construction, visitors can also visit Ever After Jewelry Co. or The Corner Store both of which are carrying select merchandise while sections of World of Disney are closed.

 

As of going to print, Disney has not announced a completion date for the World of Disney renovations.  It is suggested that the work will continue throughout 2018. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with Chip and Co. for the latest news and updates regarding this exciting project!

Electroland, the not to be missed electro dance music festival, returns to Disneyland Paris this summer! This year, the event extends to two nights in Walt Disney Studios Park on Friday 29th June and Saturday 30th June 2018 from 8pm to 2am, This year, the event will include seven internationally-known DJs, including Belgian superstar duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, highly successful German DJ Robin Schulz, and award-winning Dutch DJ Afrojack.

When Electroland returns to Disneyland Paris this summer it will be more electrifying than ever, as the event extends to two nights. Walt Disney Studios Park will turn into an electro dance music heaven as world-renowned DJs take center stage, along with a breath-taking show of lights and special effects, while select popular attractions will be available for guests attending the event to enjoy. Early this morning Slinky dog made his way through Time Square in New York City to make an appearance on “Good Morning America”. During the show, the world learned that Toy Story Land will be opening on June 30, 2018!

Toy Story Land is where kids and grownups alike will join their Toy Story Pals and experience all-new adventures. In the so-much-larger-than-life setting of Andy’s backyard, your family is invited to shrink down and become a toy alongside Woody, Buzz
Lightyear, Jessie and the rest of the Toy Story gang. Take part in the adventure together—among giant building blocks and board games that Andy’s rigged up to become a playground straight out of his vivid imagination.

First off, Andy’s assembled his awesome coaster kit and Slinky Dog is poised to take you on a wild journey. The new Slinky Dog Dash whooshes throughout the land. Hold on for an exhilarating ride that twists Slinky Dog’s coils around curves, hills, bridges, and drops. It’s a crazy ride the whole family can enjoy together.

Next, on Alien Swirling Saucers, the aliens have powered up their flying saucers to take you on a spin through space. Climb into a toy rocket and hang on as aliens lead the way on an interstellar romp set to an out-of-this-world beat. If you’re really lucky, you just might get “chosen” by the claw.

Then, head inside to Andy’s room where the toys have set up their carnival playset. On the fan favorite Toy Story Mania!, your Toy Story pals help you blast your way through a 4D arcade.
