Movie Review SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

Movie Review SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

“I’ve got a good feeling about this”

Your favorite slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler is back, though not in the way you expected in Star Wars’ latest anthology film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Acting as the legendary character’s origin story, Solo delivers a perfect blend of classic Star Wars magic with some truly unique elements that connect the fabrics of the Star Wars Universe in ways that will leave you with plenty to think about.

As the second standalone film, Solo breaks away from the conventional Star Wars line of storytelling. Even with Rogue One, the focus of the 9 films so far gravitates to a larger battle between the Light Side and the Dark whether that be the Jedi versus the Sith, the Rebels versus the Empire, or the Resistance versus the First Order. Solo instead shrinks down the scope towards a more focused adventure that has a Western-like vibe with a dash of a classic heist film. The result is an imaginative story filled with humor and excitement, creating an overall fun ride that gives us enough of what we have guessed at for Han’s backstory while still maintaining the element of surprise that will leave us turning our heads and hungry for more.

The pacing is smooth, going through the necessary world building in the first act, but still going along at a good speed, leading to the climax, and as you all have guessed, the moment you’ve all been waiting for: The Kessel Run. At 2 hours and 15 minutes, the film doesn’t spend too much time reminding you that you’re watching a Star Wars film, and instead uses that time wisely with less blunt of an approach. The only concern is in the final act, as daring as it is, may cause some friction between more selective fans. It’s shocking, interesting, and a wonderful element, but may distract from the overall narrative.

Alden Ehrenreich doesn’t disappoint, as he brings the charm and swagger needed to fill in the shoes of Harrison Ford. Though he does credit his performance to past research and Ford himself, Ehrenreich’s Solo doesn’t feel like a two hour-long impression of Harrison Ford. Instead, he takes the reigns in to show a more idealistic and optimistic side of Han that adds a deeper understanding of the character. There’s conflict, a battle between the unapologetic pirate he is destined to become and a dreamer that wants to be the best pilot in the galaxy. Ehrenreich’s approach compliments Ford’s rather than takes you away from it. It was surprising, as it didn’t appear there was much more emotional depth that could be described with Han Solo. Yet, prepare to be pleasantly turned on your head and have to rethink Solo overall in the grand scheme of his adventures throughout the Star Wars saga.

Don’t let the title fool you though, as this film is not all about Han Solo. The rest of the cast give stellar performances with characters that have strength, charisma, and relatable personality. Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian is phenomenal, though he doesn’t get as much screen time as you would imagine given the trailers and promos released so far. Still, he plays the character as smooth and as clever as those same previews have shown us. Glover is brilliant, and the only wish that can be made is for more time with him on screen.

His counterpart, L3, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is the standout character of the film in a lot of ways. She is a self-made droid, built up of spare parts and plenty of spunk. Waller-Bridge brought in her own ideas, working with Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan at rounding out her dialogue, all that pack a serious punch. L3 isn’t in distress, but more a force to be reckoned with. She’s a role model, and someone who adds a bit of modern humanity to the film, even if it is set in a galaxy far, far away.

Meanwhile, both Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton deliver on providing characters that are building blocks to the world Han ends up getting tossed into. Though the end game is the big score and payout, both do a fabulous job at conveying what it really means to be a rogue. There is a lot to be said, as their characters Beckett and Val sacrifice everything for the fleeting idea of freedom and comfort. As the film progresses, you root for these guys, even if their choices aren’t always easy to sit with.

The story’s villain, Dryden Vos; however, doesn’t show any sense of guilt, and generates a total departure for Avengers alum, Paul Bettany. Coming from the purely good hero, Vision, Bettany has the time of his life portraying the dark and calculating crime lord. With power, riches, and muscle, he is the driving force of the film’s heist. Though, there are plenty of unknown factors that play a bigger part. The smoke and mirrors are there, even if Vos himself can’t see them. Vos is the type of villain you would expect in this type of feature, but Bettany definitely pulls off the bad vibe without a hitch.

Still, as said earlier, this film is not strictly a Solo story. The best example of this comes from Emilia Clarke’s character, Qi’Ra. As Han’s oldest companion and love interest, we pretty much have to take what we see at face value. The film drives home that her character is more important than Han’s former arm candy. Instead, Clarke creates one of the most interesting tones in Solo, giving us a complex individual with just as much conflict as Han himself. Her performance and story is worth a close eye, as it is incredibly entertaining.

In the end, Solo is filled with exhilarating moments, clever one-liners, and enough balance to bring it all home in a well-packaged adventure story. In the grand scheme of the Star Wars Anthology, Solo is exactly what is needed to give us all something new without sacrificing the core elements of what makes the franchise so endearing. Solo not only shines, it soars!

FreeForm Announces Exciting Changes for Their Halloween and Christmas Programming!

holiday movies

holiday movies

I know it’s not even officially Summer yet but it’s time to start thinking Halloween and Christmas! FreeForm is known for it’s magical holiday programming and today they have announced some exciting updates that will roll out this Fall.

This year, FreeForm will expand its holiday dominance with over 1000 hours of themed programming kicking off with “31 Nights of Halloween” on October 1, 2018. This is increase from the annual “13 Nights of Halloween.” The network also introduced Freeform “Santa” (“Shadowhunters” star Isaiah Mustafa) and November’s “Kick Off to Christmas.” Then the iconic “25 Days of Christmas” returns to the entire Disney|ABC Television on December 1, 2018.

From the executive producers of the “Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings” series, Ann Lewis Roberts, Simon Lythgoe and Jenny Daly, “Decorating Disney: Halloween” will be part of “31 Days of Halloween.” This behind-the-scenes special will reveal all the tricks and treats behind the transformation of the Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts into the scariest, yet still magical, places on Earth! Freeform will continue the spooktacular festivities with a celebration for one of the most beloved Halloween movies with the “Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Extravaganza.”

Two Freeform original holiday films, “Life Size 2” and “Sleeping Together,” will also be part of the holiday lineup. In the former, Tyra Banks, who will also executive produce, reprises her iconic role as a doll that comes to life; but in the sequel, Eve has grown up. This time she’s magically awakened to help a young woman learn to live and love again. Along the way, Eve experiences the ups and downs of real life in an edgy, fun, modern Christmas movie.

“Sleeping Together” is an unexpected and whimsical holiday rom-com about two insomniac strangers plagued by exhaustion. After a brief meeting, they discover that they can only fall asleep if they are sleeping next to each other. What seems like an odd coincidence, and frankly a disruption to their lives, might be more meaningful than they’d like to admit.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Press Conference

The cast of Solo: A Star Wars Story joined together this past weekend in Los Angeles to discuss the new film, their experiences, challenges, and the impact of Solo in the Star Wars universe.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Press Conference

Taking the reigns from legendary actor, Harrison Ford, Alden Ehrenreich discussed how important it was to get Ford’s blessing, making sure to meet with him and go over the role prior to shooting. “We had lunch two years ago. He was really encouraging, really supportive”. After completing the project, Ehrenreich confirmed that Ford gave his seal of approval on the film. “It meant so much to me…such a huge deal for him to really genuinely love it.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story Press Conference

Jumping into the role of Han Solo and taking the controls of the Millennium Falcon made a huge impact, and the entire experience was an unbelievable opportunity. “It’s really wild, it’s really exciting…bigger than you can wrap your head around”

Ehrenreich was not the only one caught up in the power of Star Wars, as costar Thandie Newton brought up her own experience on set during action and battle sequences. She described the realism and huge scope of the production. “We would feel like we were in real battle scenarios, with explosions going off, debris, and mud in places you didn’t even know you had” She stated in some cases, it felt like a nightmare.

Still, the cast really bonded, and she described the friendships that formed over all the time spent together. “We’ve been shooting for a long time, some of the stuff that you share…that camaraderie was really felt. We were really going into battle together”

It was a hard fought production process, as fans saw a change in direction, writing, and overall shifts made to bring Solo to life. Ron Howard, who stepped in to take over directing Solo, mentioned what it felt like to come in and help get the film where it needed to be. “I came into this situation and had to work off instinct more than anything else.” Howard admitted that despite his past connections with Star Wars and the creator, George Lucas, he wouldn’t have come on board without the entire cast and crew that had already been established. “I’m a fan, and I also appreciate the movies. I’m not encyclopedic. I don’t know everything. I haven’t seen everything…read everything”

Solo: A Star Wars Story Press Conference

Instead, Howard, used his best instincts, and changed perspective to make sure he was meeting the standard Star Wars has come to be known for. “I’m going to treat this like a true story, I’ve done a lot of true stories. I always have technical problems. I go for the heart, I go for the drama, the excitement of the narrative and the story. I let the technical advisors tell me where else it could go or what I might be able to look at.”

Howard made sure to compliment and give credit to Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jonathan. Co-writing the script, the father and son duo helped fill in any gaps Howard had, fully understanding the source material and Star Wars knowledge needed. Lawrence Kasdan had penned the script for The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, as well as The Force Awakens. With that experience though, he made sure to reflect on what drew him into the world of Star Wars to begin with.
“George set up something that could go in many different directions and it would be wonderful for a long time…It happens to be a Star Wars story, but always first, we are always trying to tell a story that will keep you interested. “

Solo: A Star Wars Story Press Conference

Jonathan expanded upon his father’s words when thinking about how to add to the Solo canon. “Is there a kind of genre movie, a crime movie, a western that we could fit Han Solo into? How do we plug that guy into the kind of movie we love, story we want to see.” For the Kasdans, it was important to make the film stretch beyond the traditional convention of Star Wars, fitting a classic lead in line with the likes of Clint Eastwood, Humphrey Bogart, or Steve McQueen. Still, that Star Wars sizzle was needed to tie it all together. It became a mix, creating the full picture of what Solo would look like as a complete story.

“In doing so, we are able to have along the way, moments these that are familiar and people connect with. They have personal relationships with these characters; it gives it an added level of pleasure. At its base, it’s trying to be its best version of a western or a crime film”

Overall, the film was a team effort, all in the hopes of bringing something new, yet familiar to the fans. With early reactions already in, it’s safe to say there is a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks.

New Purple Wall Slush Coming To Magic Kingdom

Purple Wall Slush

A brand new Instagram worthy drink is coming to the Magic Kingdom. Starting on May 21 guests can indulge in a Purple Wall Slush! This taro tea slush comes with tapioca boba pearls, whipped cream, and purple sprinkles, and perfectly matches the famous Purple Wall in Tomorrowland.

You can find these fun drinks starting next week at the Tomorrowland Terrance Restaurant as you make your way to check out the magically enhanced Purple Wall. Half of the wall is still the same flat purple color, but over to one side, guests will find a new prismatic feature. To find the Purple Wall just walk down the ramp from Tomorrowland Terrace toward the entrance to Tomorrowland. Right when you hit the turn into the land, you’ll see the #PurpleWall on your right.

Tomorrowland Terrace is also where the Happily Ever After Fireworks Dessert Party takes place most evenings. Guests will enjoy a tempting array of freshly prepared desserts, seasonal fruits, and flavorful cheeses. Then enjoy your reserved seating at Tomorrowland Terrace or Cast Members will escort you to a prime standing area in the Plaza Garden for priority viewing of the nighttime fireworks spectacular.

The All Star Music Pineapple Whip Swirl Cupcake is Now Available!

All Star Music Pineapple Whip Swirl Cupcake

Pineapples and Disney World just seem to go together in my mind.  Maybe it’s because no trip to Walt Disney World is complete without a Dole Whip?!  The All Star Music Pineapple Whip Swirl Cupcake is another example of an awesome tropical treat available to you during your Walt Disney World vacation!

Officially available today, May 15th, this tropically delicious goodness is a  yummy yellow cupcake and topped with a swirl of vanilla and pineapple cream, white sprinkles, gold dust, and a dropper of pineapple whip gel! They had me at gold dust!

If pineapple just isn’t your thing (we can still be friends, I promise!) you’ll also find a new Blackberry Lemon Cheesecake and a chocolate Red Forest Cupcake filled with cherry compote and topped cherry buttercream at Disney’s All Star Music Resort.

These cupcakes are the perfect ending to a yummy meal at Intermission Food Court! The Fresh Berry and Walnut Salad served with Grilled Chicken Breast and a Strawberry Vinaigrette is a deliciously light meal to end a day at the parks and so is the Sweet Corn Risotto served with oven-roasted Portobello Mushroom!  Both of those get an A+ from me!  You’ll also find plenty of burgers, sandwiches and nugget options as well! The Whiskey BBQ Pork Sandwich with shaved Pork Loin served on a Hoagie Roll with Whiskey-infused BBQ Sauce and House-made Chips is a unique option and a nice change from a traditional burger and fries!

And don’t forget to check out some of the delicious cocktails also available at Disney All Star Music Resort! The Red Carpet is Rosa Regale Red Sparkling with odwalla® Lemonade and it’s $8.00 at Singing Spirits Pool Bar!  And there are plenty of other drinks for you to try as well!

So are you a fan of pineapple?!  Will you be trying this new cupcake at Disney’s All Star Music Resort the first chance you get? Or are you more likely to grab one of their other new tasty treats?!
