Take a Tour of Coronado Springs’ New Rooms

Coronado Springs Room Renovations

Many hotels at Walt Disney World Resort have been undergoing renovations and additions in the past year. We’ve seen new room designs for hotels like Pop Century and Port Orleans Riverside as well as major construction for new additions like the Gran Destino Tower at Disney’s Coronado Springs. We now have a look at the new room refurbishments that are also taking place at the hotel.

Take a Tour of Coronado Springs’ New Rooms

The rooms at Coronado Springs have received a full revamp, featuring new furnishings, flooring and bathroom fixtures. Carpeting has been replaced with the new “wood-like” laminate, and new bed frames have been installed featuring open space underneath which improves luggage storage for guests. In that same respect, there is now more closet and storage space in the bathroom area. A useful new addition is the added plugs and USB ports installed on the desk and between the beds.

The old sinks in the bathroom area have been replaced and the sliding doors that provide privacy have been changed. The showers now have sliding glass doors and a hand-held shower head which is sure to come in handy for families with small children. As with all of the current room renovations at Walt Disney World, the travel sized toiletries have been replaced with wall-mounted pumps.

New Details on Batuu at Star Wars:Galaxy’s Edge

New Details on Batuu at Star Wars:Galaxy’s Edge

Disney is dropping details on the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge nearly on a daily basis! This morning we found new details on the dining and shopping in the new land at both parks!

Batuu is the home of Black Spire Outpost, the location your adventure will begin when you arrive at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which has become a haven for the galaxy’s most colorful — and notorious — characters.

Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo – Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs has traveled throughout the galaxy following his longtime gig as the chef at Maz Kanata’s castle on Takodana and brings exotic flavors and unusual dishes to his traveling diner “Tuggs’ Grub.”

Ronto Roasters – A recycled podracing engine fires up a spit of exotic meats, meticulously turned by a former smelter droid, 8D-J8. Guests can even sample some of the tasty Ronto fare.

Milk Stand – The place to go to get your farm-fresh blue milk or green milk, direct from Bubo Wamba Family Farms.

Kat Saka’s Kettle – One of the many street market stalls, this grain vendor sells the ever-popular Outpost Mix (blend of sweet, savory and spicy popcorn).

For those looking to purchase in-story Star Wars merchandise and rare finds from across the galaxy, look no further than our many different Outpost stores and market stalls.

Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities – For those in the know, Dok-Ondar is the Ithorian you seek for selling and buying rare and uniquely-valued items from across the galaxy and spanning all eras.

Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers – Guests come to the workshop to meet with the Gatherers – a secretive group of people who have dedicated their lives to restoring balance in the galaxy by passing on their knowledge of Jedi lore and the Force. The workshop Master guides guests to customize and build their own unique lightsabers, and instructs them on the ways of the Jedi.

Droid Depot – Visitors to Mubo’s workshop can choose parts and construct their own individual astromech droids to accompany them on their journey, and then take them home with them.

First Order Cargo – A spaceport hangar bay serves as the temporary base and landing spot for the First Order. First Order officers have brought in crates of gear, uniforms and other supplies to win the hearts and minds of locals and visitors to Black Spire Outpost.

Resistance Supply – Resistance members and local sympathizers oversee a makeshift stall that supplies Resistance uniforms, pins, badges, hats, helmets, jackets, maps, tools, training supplies, food rations and other items.

There are also several market stalls which sell a variety of merchandise such as:

  • Toydarian Toymaker (toys)
  • Creature Stall (interesting critters that you can take home with you)
  • Black Spire Outfitters (clothing)
  • The Jewels of Bith (accessories and other trinkets to treasure)

Terralina Crafted Italian Hosts Four Course Chefs Dinner

Terralina Crafted Italian

Terralina Crafted Italian

Terralina Crafted Italian recently hosted a four course Chefs Dinner at their Disney Springs Restaurant.  Appetizers, entrees, desserts and wine pairings provided an opportunity for us to learn more about our taste palates.  Here is our review of the incredible food and interactions with the Chefs.

First Course:

Antipasti Tower paired with a Belleruche Rose Wine  from Cotes du Rhone Valley, France.  Have you ever tried Cardamom Carrots?  This particular offering was a favorite at our table.  The Wine was a perfect match for the food offerings on the Tower.  We highly recommend this combination on your visit to Terralina Crafted Italian.

Second Course:

Seafood Cannelloni paired with a beautiful White Wine from Campania, Italy.  The Mascarpone gives this dish its traditional Italian flavor.

Third Course:

Ravioli Gigante paired with a flavorful Red Wine from Tuscany, Italy.  The Ravioli was cooked al dente, which is exactly what we would expect from a true Italian pasta dish.  The roasted garlic-tomato cream was not overpowering.  We loved the flavor combinations in this dish.

Fourth Course:

Dessert Duo paired with a Sparkling Bubbly White Wine from Venice, Italy.  The Flourless Chocolate Torte was decadent without being too sweet.  We loved the flavors in the Lemon Thyme Panna Cotta and strongly recommend this if you only have one option for dessert.

Terralina Crafted Italian

Oliver selected the Wine pairings for our evening.  He started us with French Wine (he is from France after all!) and concluded with three Italian Wines.  Oliver even had a picture of the vine where the grapes for our White Wine came from.

What would a Chefs Dinner be without our awesome Chefs?  Award Winning Chef Tony Mantuano, and Executive Chef Justin Plank, were informative and entertaining.  Thank you Terralina Crafted Italian for a lovely evening.

Celebrate Disney’s Silly Symphonies in Concert

Celebrate Disney's Silly Symphonies in Concert

Celebrate Disney’s Silly Symphonies in Concert. Leonard Maltin, curator of the DVD release of the Silly Symphony series, said “Walt Disney was a visionary.  He used his Silly Symphonies to expand the medium of animation to the limits of his imagination.  They are among Walt’s greatest achievements and deserve to be seen and enjoyed by a new generation.”

Disney in Concert, a Silly Symphony Celebration, a program in its area premiere, is a tuneful and colorful celebration from the 75 groundbreaking cartoons produced at the Walt Disney Studios that between 1929 and 1939 that eventually lead to the making of Fantasia (1940), including four Academy Award winning animated short subjects.

Six of these innovative, entertaining, and classic films will be screened with the CSUN Symphony orchestra playing live, conducted by John Roscigno at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya) on Sunday, March 10 at 3 pm.

The program includes Three Little Pigs, (with possibly the most popular song ever from a short “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?”), Flowers and Trees (1932), which introduced three-strip Technicolor to a wide audience and won the first Academy Award for animated short, and The Old Mill (1937) which introduced the multiplane Camera, adding great visual depth to Disney features from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) to The Little Mermaid (1989).

Celebrate Disney's Silly Symphonies in Concert

With the Silly Symphonies, Walt Disney laid all of the groundwork that culminated in his first full-length film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, using color, character, songs, and storytelling that became the basis of animated film up to today.  Even the sources of music – from classical to pop to folk songs – is reflected in current musical mash-ups. And it has been said that Fantasia is the ultimate Silly Symphony.

Though most Disney Fans may recognize the famed songs and images from these classic animations , not everyone is as familiar with their history.

Walt Disney asked Carl Stalling, a theatre organist that Disney knew in Kansas days, to come to Los Angeles when he decided that Steamboat Willie, the animated short that introduced Mickey Mouse, needed a soundtrack and a musical score.  It eventually included a fifteen-piece band.

After its premiere November 18, 1928, Stalling, who had used everything and anything as an organist – classical, popular, folk music — suggested to Disney that he create a second series based around music, to complement the Mickey Mouse series.  Each film would tell a different story – some with little dialogue — and each with different characters.

The idea was innovative on many levels, including the use of all kinds of music from disperate sources as the basis not just for a film score, but for the idea of the film itself. (Stalling left the Disney studios the next year for Warner Bros.).

This program includes both the first and final Silly SymphoniesThe Skeleton Dance (1929) and the Academy Award winning The Ugly Duckling (1939); three other Oscar winners are included – Flowers and Trees (1932),The Old Mill (1937), and the most popular of the series Three Little Pigs (1933).

Film historian Richard Hildreth said, “The most important innovation in The Skeleton Dance is that the musical score and the animated action were planned, designed, and executed in unison.”  He continued about Flowers and Trees, “Technicolor’s new three-strip process provided much more accurate color representation but also demanded more exacting mechanics and processing … only the Disney studio was willing to experiment with the new process.”

Celebrate Disney's Silly Symphonies in Concert

“Disney, who was the first cartoon producer to compel his staff to take art lessons, added color theory to the curriculum. The Disney-developed color palette became the model that Technicolor used in designing films for the next four decades. Flowers and Trees was met with amazement at its July, 15, 1932, opening at Grauman’s Theater in Los Angeles.”

The next year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave a special Oscar to Technicolor for its “color cartoon process,” another to Disney himself for the creation of Mickey Mouse, and the first Oscar for a cartoon short to the studio for Flowers and Trees. A Disney film won that category for the next seven years. Three-strip Technicolor became one of the great industry standards, including in The Wizard of Oz (1939) andGone With the Wind (1939).

Three Little Pigs was so popular that it was often billed above the feature it accompanied on theatre marquees.  Disney himself said about the animated pigs, “At last we have achieved true personality in a whole picture.”  And its anthem theme song, a salve for depression weary audiences, “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” by song writer Frank Churchill, is possibly the most popular song from any short subject in film history.

The Old Mill (1937) was the first use of the now-famed multiplane camera, an eight-foot high contraption of up to seven planes of animation that a camera could zoom in and out from, gave Disney animated films a remarkable sensation of depth.  This was used to great effect in the first feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1939) up through The Little Mermaid (1989).  The multiplane itself also received a special Scientific and Technical Oscar (1938).

In ohmydisney.com, film historian J.B. Kaufman, co-author of the current Taschen book Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse and books about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the Silly Symphonies themselves noted that the shorts’ mixture of music styles and orchestration was also profoundly cutting-edge. “People may not realize what an innovation it was to mix these compositions from different sources with abandon.”  And the series drew positive attention from the Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein and surrealist modern artist Salvador Dali – who collaborated with Disney on the short subject Destino, which was started in 1945 and completed in 2003.

“They started as an experiment,” Disney himself said. “We used them to test and perfect the color and animation techniques we employed later in full-length feature pictures like Cinderella, Snow White, and Fantasia.”  J. B. Kaufman said, “The combination of animation and music culminates in Fantasia (November 1940). You could say that’s the ultimate Silly Symphony.”

“During the decade of Silly Symphonies, Disney and his various collaborators had transformed animated films from novelties to true cinema,” Hildreth wrote. Indeed they did.

Give Kids the World Village is a non-profit organization based out of central Florida.  The Give Kids the World organization fulfills wishes for critically ill children and their families.  For the 2019 season the non-profit organization will be partnering with 16 of the nation’s top theme and amusement parts across the country.  During this event the theme and amusement parks will be staging the Coasting for Kids events.

The Give Kids the World Village is an 84-acre, non-profit resort, located near Orlando’s world-famous theme parks.  The village was founded more than 30 years ago and has since then hosted more than 165, 000 critically ill children and their families.

Participants will be raising money in support of Give Kids the World in order to provide free, week-long dream vacations to critically ill children and their families.  In addition, the participant who raises at least $100 towards the Give Kids the World Village will receive special Coasting for Kids passes, which will give them exclusive perks at the park they choose to visit.

During the 2019 season, participating parks will offer a special Coasting for Kids day on which those who have raised over $100 will be able to use their exclusive Coasting for Kids pass, earn a Coasting for Kids T-shirt and exclusive ride times for the day.  Give Kids the World President and CEO Pamela Landwirth stated partnering with the parks was perfect fit for the village as they share many of the same goals-bringing happiness to families.  Landwirth also stated, “We are extremely grateful for all of the Theme and Amusement parks support.  Coasting for Kids is going to be spectacular.”

Participants who are interested in raising funds towards Give Kids the World Village can sign up and view upcoming dates and participating parks at www.gktw.org/coasting.  The event kicks off in March at Busch Gardens Williamsburg and will continue across the United States throughout 2019.
