Port Canaveral Florida is getting ready for cruising to resume this week! The cruise industry is kicking back up and cruise lines are heading back out with passengers.
Cruise lines have completed test sailings and have been given the go-ahead to sail with paying passengers. Carnival’s Mardi Gras just returned to Port Canaveral after completing its first sailing back after the pandemic.
Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas set sail yesterday on its first sailing back since COVID. Tonight, Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream will sail its first cruise with paying passengers since the COVID shutdown. It will be sailing a 4-night Bahamian cruise.
Port Canaveral will have one of its busiest weekends since the pandemic started. Cruise lines were shut down for over a year due to COVID.
“Over the next two to three weeks, you’re going to see a lot of activity of active sailings out of Port Canaveral. And that’s what’s got us excited right now,” said Canaveral Port Authority CEO Captain John Murray.
Work at Port Canaveral has been very slow over the last year. “It was very slow,” said Port Canaveral Manager Adam Der. “Sometimes a little boring, but you kind of keep busy and do what you do.”
He also shared that it’s exciting to see cruise ships return to the port. “It’s great to see, man. A lot of people looking forward to getting back on those cruises and having a good time.”

‘Free Guy’ Cast and Crew Can’t-Wait for Audiences to Enjoy the Movie Starting This Friday. We had the pleasure of attending the ‘Free Guy’ virtual press conference and getting to hear some wonderful stories from Director Shawn Levy and the cast of the highly-anticipated action movie. The movie is star-studded and will feature Ryan Reynolds (Guy), Jodie Comer (Millie/Molotov Girl), Taika Waititi (Antonie), Lil Rel Howery (Buddy), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Mouser), and Joe Keery (Keys), all of whom were in attendance for the press event.
Director Shawn Levy opened the event hoping that fans will find the film as fun and joyous and the cast and crew has, sharing: “It has been a ride and has definitely been a longer wait than we expected. But, this movie was such a delight to make, and making this movie was pretty joyous and fun. We’re just really excited to finally get to share a movie that hopefully has that same fun and that delight and warmth that was on set.“
One of the fun aspects for audience members is the chance to see Ryan Reynolds in action, but as a tamer, naive, and more fun-loving version of a hero. Ryan was specifically asked how did he differentiate his performance from his role of Deadpool, telling the press, “There’s something really fun about exploring everything with new eyes, which is what this character gets to do, and sort of filtering that through the prism of comedy and occasionally cynicism,” He continued, “I love a playing character who is sort of stepping out of the background into this kind of new person.“
As featured in the trailer, the anthem for the film is Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” and we were not the only ones curious about who chose this particular song. Turns out it was Ryan Reynolds himself! Ryan shared, “In the earliest draft we’d written in The Outfield’s “Your Love”. It ended up just not fitting right.” He elaborated, “It’s a great song, but was not fitting right. But then Mariah Carey’s Fantasy just came like a lightning bolt to me and just drove the story. It was like an engine for so much of the movie.”
The cast also shared several stories about their favorite moments from the film, who was the biggest gamer in real life (it’s was unanimously Utkarsh Ambudkar), and even which video games they would want to live in for a day. We also loved hearing Taika Waititi’s take on playing the villainous Antonie. After joking about how he doesn’t understand why Shawn reached out to him about the role and teased that it would tank Levy’s career, he got a little more serious about the role, claiming his inspiration comes from people in his life.
“Shawn described the character and that appealed to me ’cause I feel like my characters are usually quite nice. Like, [somehow] I just play versions of my mom in all my characters.” Waititi continued, “This was the sort of a version of my mom, who I think that had not grown up, I suppose. Basically, the characters I work on are just based on people I’ve met and I’ve met a lot of people like this in America.” This response to a character known as an egotistical CEO or “Bossman” immediately caused the entire cast and crew, as well as us watching in, to bust out laughing because we ALL have met someone like this.
We would love to share more with you, but don’t want to ruin any of the magic in store. Basically, we highly recommend you go see Free Guy exclusively in theaters on August 13th. Can’t wait til then to learn or see more? Check out the trailer for Free Guy below:

Screen Actors Guild President Calls Out Disney for “Gender-Shaming” and Bullying in Scarlett Johansson Lawsuit. After several statements and responses by The Walt Disney Company to the Black Widow Lawsuit, SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris didn’t hold back on her thoughts regarding Disney’s tactics that very poignantly attack the character of Ms. Johannson, despite the acclaimed actress helping make billions for the company with her role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.
“Disney should be ashamed of themselves for resorting to tired tactics of gender-shaming and bullying,” Carteris shared in a statement on Friday. “Actors must be compensated for their work according to their contracts. Scarlett Johansson is shining a white-hot spotlight on the improper shifts in compensation that companies are attempting to slip by talent as distribution models change.”
She continued, “Nobody in any field of work should fall victim to surprise reductions in expected compensation. It is unreasonable and unjust. Disney and other content companies are doing very well and can certainly live up to their obligations to compensate the performers whose art and artistry are responsible for the corporation’s profits.”
To quickly sum up the dramatic events from the last few weeks, Marvel Star Scarlett Johannson has filed a lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company for a breach of contract regarding her role in Marvel Studios’ Black Widow.
Per Scarlett Johansson’s contract, a portion stated that the film would have a theater-exclusive initial release, meaning the movie would premiere in theaters and potentially premiere on other platforms at a later date. It is no secret that the film was released simultaneously in theaters and via Disney+ Premier Access (D+PA), and though Johansson will still make earnings on the D+PA release, her contract was never renegotiated despite her legal team and representatives had reached out to Disney throughout the pandemic regarding the release of the film when the world was adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the alleged offer to renegotiate, Disney reportedly never responded to Scarlett’s team or offered the chance to renegotiate her contract before announcing and implementing the film’s revised premiere plans. Standing up for herself, Scarlett and her team have chosen to sue Disney over the breach of contract, citing the terms of her contract were broken despite her willingness to renegotiate and being stonewalled by the company through the pandemic.
Disney’s initial statement/response to the lawsuit was as follows: “The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. [The studio] fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract. The release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”
Johansson’s agent and CAA co-chairman Bryan Lourd released a passionate statement calling Disney out for the blatant attack on Scarlett’s character, saying on the actresses behalf, “[Disney is] shamelessly and falsely accus[ing] Ms. Johansson of being insensitive to the global COVID pandemic, in an attempt to make her appear to be someone they and I know she isn’t.”
Further digging into the statement shared by TWDC, “[The Walt Disney Company] included her salary in their press statement in an attempt to weaponize her success as an artist and businesswoman, as if that were something she should be ashamed of as a result of Disney’s decision to knowingly violate Scarlett’s contract.”
Adding, “They have very deliberately moved the revenue stream and profits to the Disney+ side of the company leaving artistic and financial partners out of their new equation… Disney’s direct attack on her character and all else they implied is beneath the company that many of us in the creative community have worked with successfully for decades.”
This is a developing story, so be sure to check back here at Chip and Company for all things Marvel and Disney!
Will More Mature Marvel Content Come to Disney+ and Hulu? After the news that Disney would be dropping the Marvel Television studios label, many fans expected current Marvel Television projects to be dropped in a similar manner. Other Marvel shows such as Howard The Duck and Tigra & Dazzler were shelved before they could premiere and Helstrom was cancelled after a single season. Despite these changes, a renewed interest in mature animated series may save several Marvel projects including M.O.D.O.K., the upcoming animated show Hit Monkey, and open the door to more mature content from Marvel.
At the moment neither M.O.D.O.K. nor Hit Monkey are considered “canon” under the Marvel Studios label, and it is very unlikely that they will ever be added into the MCU timeline (even as Multiverse branches). Currently, M.O.D.O.K. is awaiting approval for a second season, and Head of Scripted Content at Hulu Jordan Helman shares he is hopeful that the series will continue and will allow Hulu to explore more mature animated content with Marvel.
“Marvel continues to be an incredibly important partner and one of the biggest generators of content within the Disney ecosystem so we’re excited about the possibility of what may lie in the future with regards to the Hulu/Marvel relationship,” adding, “Given Marvel’s place in the Disney ecosystem, it seems like an incredibly robust avenue for future projects.”
Helman did share he has not spoken with Marvel Studios or President Kevin Feige about the potential for crossover work, which leads us to believe the shows featured on Hulu will stay “non-canon” and remain exclusive to the Disney+ sister streaming service and International Hot Star services.
