Disney, the major entertainment sponsor of the 2023 Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans, put on a dazzling show for the thousands of attendees this past weekend with the director and stars along with footage from “Haunted Mansion,” opening in theaters July 28, Lucasfilm’s new Star Wars series “Ahsoka,” debuting on Disney+ on August 23, and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” opening in theaters November 22.

On Friday, “Haunted Mansion” cast members LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Rosario Dawson and director Justin Simien kicked off their Festival weekend by attending a haunting and frightfully fun Influencer Brunch at the Grand Oaks Mansion at River City Venues. There, they charmed the 100+ influencers in a Q&A moderated by ABC’s Race and Culture executive producer Nzinga Blake, mixed and mingled, and enjoyed the themed food, specialty drinks, and live entertainment. Guests received special gift bags with mini posters, water bottles, fanny packs, and Fandango movie tickets on behalf of “Haunted Mansion.”
The film’s ensemble cast also includes Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Chase W. Dillon and Daniel Levy, with Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost. Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, “Haunted Mansion” is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters. The film’s producers are Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, with Nick Reynolds and Tom Peitzman serving as executive producers.

Friday evening on the main stage at the Superdome, Simien, Stanfield, Haddish and Dawson took to the stage to greet the thousands of thrilled attendees, discuss “Haunted Mansion” and introduce the film’s trailer, which caused major excitement when it was shown on the giant Caesars Superdome screens. The audience also appreciated a 30-second spot that highlighted new and upcoming movies and series from Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm. The evening featured concert performances by headliner Lauryn Hill, along with Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, KRS-One, Slick Rick, Ari Lennox, Tobe Nwigwe, Jagged Edge, and Guest DJ Clark Kent.
Saturday morning, the “Haunted Mansion” talent assembled on the Essence Stage at the Convention Center for a lively conversation, moderated by Angélique Roché, about the absolute blast they all had making the film, and screened a 30-second spot to the crowd’s delight. They encouraged everyone to stick around for the “Disney Studios Showcase” at the Essence Film Festival later that afternoon, where one lucky attendee would receive four tickets to the world premiere of “Haunted Mansion.”
At the dazzling “Studios Showcase,” Simien, Stanfield, Haddish and Dawson, who’s also the star of Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated Disney+ Star Wars series “Ahsoka,” entertained the audience of 1500 with a Q&A, moderated by Angélique Roché. In addition, everyone was treated to a four-minute sneak peek at “Haunted Mansion.”
Attendees also got a sneak peek at the highly anticipated series “Ahsoka” during a Q&A with star Rosario Dawson where she shared her excitement around joining a galaxy far, far away as the fan-favorite Jedi Knight and former padawan to Anakin Skywalker.
An exclusive clip from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” and a video greeting from one of the film’s stars, Academy Award® winner Ariana DeBose, received enthusiastic responses from the attendees. Everyone received a “Wish” lithograph print featuring Ariana DeBose’s character Asha, “Haunted Mansion” and “Ahsoka” mini posters, and “Haunted Mansion” themed Fandango movie tickets, and one very appreciative and excited guest won the four “Haunted Mansion” world premiere tickets.
“Ahsoka,” starring Dawson in the title role, is set after the fall of the Empire and follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy. The series also stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Eman Esfandi appearing as Ezra Bridger.
“Ahsoka” is written by Dave Filoni, who is also an executive producer alongside Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, and Carrie Beck. Karen Gilchrist is co-executive producer. The series’ directors include Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel and Rick Famuyiwa.
In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Following the highly anticipated return of the original Hocus Pocus stars in Hocus Pocus 2 last year, fans were introduced to new characters, including Sam Richardson’s lovable Gilbert. With the confirmation of a third film in the series, Richardson expressed his keen interest in reprising his role, although various industry challenges may hinder the project’s progress. Despite the uncertainties surrounding the upcoming adventure and the absence of a release date, Richardson’s enthusiasm for returning to the enchanting world of Hocus Pocus remains unwavering.

When asked about the possibility of Gilbert making a comeback in Hocus Pocus 3, Richardson shared his hopes, stating, “I certainly hope so. I had such a great time playing Gilbert in Hocus Pocus 2. I’d go and play on that set any day of the week. You just tell me, I’ll be there.” However, with ongoing writers’ strikes and potential actors’ strikes looming, significant momentum on the project may be delayed.

In the original Hocus Pocus, the nefarious Sanderson sisters were resurrected when a virgin unintentionally lit the Black Flame Candle. In the sequel, Gilbert intentionally recreated the candle, having witnessed the sisters’ magic during his childhood, leading to their return. However, as the story unfolded, Gilbert realized his mistake and played a pivotal role in aiding the teenaged heroes in vanquishing the sisters. This reconciliation paves the way for a potentially more amicable return for Gilbert in the third film.
Although the initial release of Hocus Pocus in 1993 did not garner significant attention due to its summer launch and competition from films like Jurassic Park, its subsequent airings on various networks captured the hearts of a new generation. Over the years, the devoted following of Hocus Pocus has grown exponentially, enchanting viewers young and old with its Halloween-themed adventure, fostering a passionate fan base eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the beloved franchise.
The largest individually owned Disneyland/Disney Park collection in the world, amassed over a 30-year period will hit the auction block at Van Eaton Galleries. “The Joel Magee Disneyland Collection” auction will kick off on July 17, 2023 (Disneyland’s 68th birthday) and continue for three days, concluding on July 19, 2023.
The collection is so vast, the auction house secured a 30,000-square-foot building for the public exhibition which begins June 28, 2023, and will remain open through July 16, 2023. With over 1,500 items, the auction and exhibition is so diverse, so large and so fascinating that both Disney aficionados and fans who love the happiest place on earth will be stunned at the number of items included.

“The Joel Magee Disneyland Collection is actually almost 6,000 pieces. For this auction, I have hand-picked just over 1,500 pieces that trace the story of the parks in an extraordinary fashion. This is the first and most important auction of his collection in the coming year and is by far the most impressive and historically significant one-of-a-kind piece. A couple of examples of the rarities the auction will provide are the “Set of three Audio-Animatronic Hitchhiking Ghosts” which are estimated to sell for $100,000-$200,000 and the “Midget Atopia” car, estimated to sell for $50,000-$100,000. The over 1,500 items will be exhibited at the Burbank Town Center Mall at 201 East Magnolia in Burbank, California. It is a fitting location as it was once where Disney planned to build the Disney-MGM Studios. The public exhibition will open on June 28, 2023.
From the rarest of attraction artifacts to costumes, props, souvenirs, tickets, signage, cast member items, and much more, the auction exhibition will be a journey through Disney offering guests the opportunity to experience some of the earliest historical items to modern-day ride attractions.

Although the collection is far too massive to list all of the items up for auction, some additional highlights include an Original Walt Disney World Barnstormer Vehicle (Estimate: $5,000-$8,000); an Original Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Sign ($6,000-$8,000); Original Walt Disney World Mickey Mouse Promotional Art (Estimate: $2,000-$4,000); a Tower of Terror (1994) Twilight Zone Bellhop Costume ($2,000-$4,000); a Giant Toy Story Alien Prop Figure ($1,000-$2,000); and a Toy Story Midway Mania Potato Head Vehicle Prop (Estimate: $800-$1,000).

Construction is well underway for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure takeover of Splash Mountain in the Magic Kingdom. The big news from the past couple of weeks has been the installation of Tiana’s Tiara Topped Tower near the large drop. (try saying that 5 times fast)

Scaffolding still covers pretty much the whole attraction as Disney Crews work to get things ready for the 2024 opening date.
Almost the entire ride track seems to be covered as crews work in sections. I imagine before this ride is complete they will fully refurbish the entire track including a fresh coat of paint.
Even the ride entrance is in disarray. It should be interesting to see how Disney revamps this whole ride from start to finish.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who is playing Madame Leota in the upcoming “Haunted Mansion” movie, recently shared she would love to make a movie based on the Carousel of Progress ride at Walt Disney World.

In a video shared to the Disney Studios TikTok account, Jamie Lee Curtis responded to the question, “If you could do another movie based on a Disney ride what would it be?” Her response was the Carousel of Progress attraction in Magic Kingdom!
“So, my favorite ride/attraction was something called the Carousel of Progress,” Curtis said, “which is only now at Disney World. But it was the GE Carousel of Progress, and I loved it. So I would want to make a movie of the Carousel of Progress, which is basically time travel. It’s sort of about technology and it’s changed over the years.”
Walt Disney originally conceived the show as part of a new area at Disneyland Park called Edison Square. When the concept was abandoned, the idea was reimagined, eventually opening under the name “Progressland” at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair.
With the classic song “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” by the Academy Award®-winning team of brothers Richard and Robert Sherman, the show was an instant hit. Following its success, the show moved to Disneyland Park and was renamed “The Carousel of Progress.”
In 1975, the attraction moved to Magic Kingdom park where it was rewritten and restaged with a new theme song, “The Best Time of Your Life.”
In the true spirit of progress, the show was reworked in 1994 to its initial incarnation with the original theme song intact—as a tribute to nostalgia.

The return of the Indiana Jones pinball machine coincided with the release of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” last weekend. The machine was once part of the Indiana Jones Adventure Outpost shop before the area became extra seating for Bengal Barbecue.
The pinball machine now sits in a corner of the indoor seating area for Bengal Barbecue. Indiana Jones, his father Dr. Jones, Short Round, Marion, Willie, and Sallah are all depicted in the artwork on the machine. Other famous images from the Indiana Jones franchise are also featured.

An Indiana Jones meet & greet has been spotted in Disneyland! To celebrate the release of the new film, Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny, guests can meet Indiana Jones in Disneyland park.
There is no set time or schedule for meeting Indiana Jones or a specific meeting location but guests can see him roaming around Adventureland throughout the day. He will also sometimes enter the queue for Indiana Jones Adventure and chat with guests. Guests can also see him hanging out above the Jungle Cruise queue.
Indy is dressed in his traditional adventurer outfit complete with his iconic whip and hat. He also carries a notebook and tapestry around with him and asks guests to help him decipher the clues on each.
This Indiana Jones meet and greet will be around for a limited time but we don’t know an exact date that it will end. If you want to meet the famous adventurer, head over to Disneyland soon!
