Grinch Meet and Greet Has Soft Opened at Universal Islands of Adventure for 2024

It looks like the holidays have arrived early at Universal’s Islands of Adventure! While the Grinch Meet and Greet is officially scheduled to debut alongside the kickoff of Grinchmas on November 22, guests over the weekend were treated to an unexpected surprise—this fan-favorite holiday experience has already soft opened for technical rehearsals in Seuss Landing.

The Grinch, as mischievous and lovable as ever, is greeting guests inside Honk Honkers, which has been transformed to resemble his mountainous lair. Visitors are invited into this delightfully festive setting, where they’ll find the Grinch decked out in his Santa Claus outfit, complete with his signature hat and shoes. The cozy yet chaotic scene includes his sleigh, a sack bursting with Christmas cheer, and decorations he (of course) “borrowed” from Whoville, including trees and garlands.

Fans of the meet and greet will find the setup familiar, as it closely resembles last year’s experience. True to the Grinch’s style, the lighting inside his lair remains moody and dim, adding to the whimsical atmosphere. A Universal photographer is on hand to capture the perfect moments, so guests can take home a keepsake of their encounter with the Mean One himself.

Currently, there is no virtual queue in place, so guests can enjoy the traditional standby line experience. This mirrors last year’s approach, offering fans the chance to enjoy the festive anticipation as they wait to meet the Grinch.

Legendary Disney Parks Music Composer George Wilkins Passes Away at the Age of 90 1

The Disney community mourns the loss of George Wilkins, a legendary composer whose music shaped the magic of Disney Parks for decades. Wilkins passed away on November 9, 2024, at the age of 90. Known for his brilliant compositions and arrangements, his work brought life to countless Disney attractions that have become cherished memories for generations of park guests.

Tammy Tuckey, host of The Tammy Tuckey Show, shared the news on social media, reflecting on the profound impact Wilkins had on Disney Parks and her own life: “The wonderful, brilliant, talented, and kind George Wilkins has passed. This man wrote the music for many Disney park attractions that I grew up listening to as a kid—Country Bears, Food Rocks, Sonny Eclipse… if I wrote an entire list, your head would spin.”

Born on March 14, 1934, in Detroit, Wilkins began his musical journey as a solo vocalist at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. He later made his mark as a backup vocalist and arranger for Patti Page in the 1950s, co-founded the Doodletown Pipers in the 1960s, and composed music for Rankin/Bass productions like Return to Oz and The Wacky World of Mother Goose. These early successes led him to Walt Disney Productions, where he joined in 1979 as a protégé to legendary composer Buddy Baker.

Wilkins’ tenure at Disney marked a golden era of innovation in theme park music. He became music director for EPCOT in 1981, stepping in after Buddy Baker’s departure, and created timeless compositions for attractions such as Listen to the Land, Horizons, Kitchen Kabaret, and Journey Into Imagination. His work seamlessly blended technology and artistry, as seen in his contributions to The Living Seas and Test Track.

Notably, Wilkins composed the beloved queue music for Space Mountain, including the iconic “Star Tunnel” theme that continues to captivate guests today. He also arranged the musical landscapes for the World of Motion and the Carousel of Progress and provided his genius to attractions like Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and Food Rocks. His whimsical compositions for Sonny Eclipse at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café remain a fan favorite, encapsulating his ability to create music that resonates with both humor and heart.

Wilkins’ work extended far beyond EPCOT, gracing attractions and areas across Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland. He retired in 2008 after contributing arrangements to Hong Kong Disneyland’s “it’s a small world”, leaving a legacy that spans the globe.

As we reflect on Wilkins’ remarkable career, his music stands as a testament to the power of creativity and its ability to transport us to new worlds. His compositions not only defined the experiences of Disney attractions but also touched the hearts of millions.

EPCOT Decks the Halls for the 2024 Holiday Season

The holiday spirit is in full swing at Walt Disney World’s EPCOT! While the park’s much-anticipated Festival of the Holidays doesn’t officially begin until November 29th, festive decorations have already started to appear, setting the stage for a season of international holiday cheer. At the heart of it all is EPCOT’s towering Christmas tree, a fan-favorite that brings together global traditions in one dazzling display.

The EPCOT Christmas tree stands proudly at the entrance to World Showcase, nestled between Port of Entry and World Traveler. This year, the tree carries forward many familiar elements while introducing a subtle but thoughtful update. The Disney100 globes from last year have been cleverly reimagined, with the Disney100 logo replaced by images of iconic World Showcase buildings. Painted in gold and adorned with a snowy effect, these globe ornaments celebrate the cultural tapestry of the park in a way we hope becomes a new tradition.

The tree itself dazzles with gold garland, a return from 2022 but with a fresh look as last year’s blue accents have been replaced with the warmer hue. The angel topper, dressed in a striking blue, watches over ornaments in shades of yellow, green, blue, and purple. White baubles adorned with flags of World Showcase nations and multilingual “Happy Holidays” bells add a touch of international flair. Surrounding the tree, a festive setup of landscaping and fencing creates the perfect holiday photo opportunity, often complete with PhotoPass photographers ready to capture magical memories.

Decorations aren’t limited to the tree—holiday touches have popped up across the park. At the front entrance, garlands of blue-green hues sparkle with silver, purple, and green baubles, accented by globe ornaments that reflect the land and sea. Above the entrance to Port of Entry, strands of garland overlap beautifully, featuring red, gold, and peppermint-themed baubles alongside silver and red poinsettias. The countries in the World Showcase have also been decked out for the holidays, featuring decorations fitting the country they are found in.
