Tammy Tuckey, host of The Tammy Tuckey Show, shared the news on social media, reflecting on the profound impact Wilkins had on Disney Parks and her own life: “The wonderful, brilliant, talented, and kind George Wilkins has passed. This man wrote the music for many Disney park attractions that I grew up listening to as a kid—Country Bears, Food Rocks, Sonny Eclipse… if I wrote an entire list, your head would spin.”

Born on March 14, 1934, in Detroit, Wilkins began his musical journey as a solo vocalist at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. He later made his mark as a backup vocalist and arranger for Patti Page in the 1950s, co-founded the Doodletown Pipers in the 1960s, and composed music for Rankin/Bass productions like Return to Oz and The Wacky World of Mother Goose. These early successes led him to Walt Disney Productions, where he joined in 1979 as a protégé to legendary composer Buddy Baker.

Wilkins’ tenure at Disney marked a golden era of innovation in theme park music. He became music director for EPCOT in 1981, stepping in after Buddy Baker’s departure, and created timeless compositions for attractions such as Listen to the Land, Horizons, Kitchen Kabaret, and Journey Into Imagination. His work seamlessly blended technology and artistry, as seen in his contributions to The Living Seas and Test Track.

Notably, Wilkins composed the beloved queue music for Space Mountain, including the iconic “Star Tunnel” theme that continues to captivate guests today. He also arranged the musical landscapes for the World of Motion and the Carousel of Progress and provided his genius to attractions like Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and Food Rocks. His whimsical compositions for Sonny Eclipse at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café remain a fan favorite, encapsulating his ability to create music that resonates with both humor and heart.

Wilkins’ work extended far beyond EPCOT, gracing attractions and areas across Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland. He retired in 2008 after contributing arrangements to Hong Kong Disneyland’s “it’s a small world”, leaving a legacy that spans the globe.

As we reflect on Wilkins’ remarkable career, his music stands as a testament to the power of creativity and its ability to transport us to new worlds. His compositions not only defined the experiences of Disney attractions but also touched the hearts of millions.
