A Hidden Treasure: Disney Customized Maps

A Hidden Treasure: Disney Customized MapsFor someone that hasn’t been to Walt Disney World very often, there can be a lot of things to decide upon when you are planning your trip.  One of the biggest things that people overlook is how to tell your child, wife, or other significant person that you are taking them to Disney World on a vacation!  If you are taking your children, one of the greatest things that I have found to “spill the beans” are the Disney Customized Maps.  These are special maps that you can order free of charge from the Disney World website once every six months.  They are printed with all of your favorites listed for each of the parks, and they come on oversize, durable paper so that you can keep them as a souvenir for years to come.  My wife and I gave them to our daughter as a means of telling her we were going when we stayed at Coronado Springs in 2007, and she loved taking the dots and star stickers that came with the maps and putting them on to mark her favorite things that she wanted to try and the resort we were staying at.

There are two designs that you can choose from, the classic design (pictured above) and the character design (shown below).  Personally, I prefer the classic design; even though you can’t tell from the image above, the paper reminds me of the type of parchment paper that you would see the location of buried treasure marked on.  However, this time around we ordered the character design, which shows a different character for each of the parks.  For Magic Kingdom, the character that is shown is Dumbo, for Epcot, Nemo, for Hollywood Studios, Woody, and for Animal Kingdom, Simba.  In addition to the style of map you want, you can also select your own favorite locations, or you can choose favorites based on an age range.

A Hidden Treasure: Disney Customized Maps

In order to order the maps, you do have to have an account at Disneyworld.com.  In addition, you need to provide your address so that they can be mailed to you.  I’m sorry, but the maps can only be sent to addresses in the United States.  However, one thing that you can do if you live outside the US is to print out the maps yourself!  This isn’t quite the same feel as getting them in the mailbox, but it’s the next best thing.  You can also print them out at home at any time if you are waiting out your six-month window between ordering for home delivery.

If you are looking for a neat, free Disney keepsake, keep the Customized Maps in mind and order a set, even if you don’t have a trip planned yet!

Where to find Santa Claus at Walt Disney World

Where to find Santa Claus at Walt Disney World

This article comes to us from Kristin Ford at the Orlando Sentinel‘s Daily Disney Column.

It’s December so of course Santa Claus and his elves are extremely busy. Still, The Big Man always finds time to visit Walt Disney World, so make sure your little one is ready for a heart-to-heart, or at least a photo.

Here are some places you’re likely to find Santa on Disney property, though if he’s called back to the North Pole, his schedule could change:

** Magic Kingdom: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (intermittently) daily in Town Square next to City Hall. The Jolly Old Elf also makes an appearance in Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party on select nights.

** Epcot: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., 4:10 p.m. to 6:10 p.m. and 6:50 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. daily at The American Adventure. Each country in the World Showcase also features storytellers who describe local holiday traditions. In many countries, the storyteller is a representation of Santa, such as Pere Noel in France and Father Christmas in England.

** Downtown Disney Marketplace: noon to 10 p.m. daily at Santa’s Chalet in front of World of Disney. (Santa Paws for Pets is not offered this year.)

50 and Fabulous Screenings

At D23 Expo 2009, Disney fans were invited to view Disney film masterpieces that were celebrating their golden anniversaries — beloved animated classics and live-action family friendly films rarely seen on the big screen in the past 50 years. The D23 tradition continued in 2010, this time in the recently renovated, state-of-the-art 400-seat Studio Theatre on the Walt Disney Studio Lot in Burbank.

The 2011 season of 50 and Fabulous begins January 22 on the Burbank Lot. Tickets to the screenings are free (with a $5 ticket processing fee) for D23 Members and one guest, and will include special D23 surprises. The schedule is as follows:

  • January 22:  101 Dalmatians Released originally January 25, 1961, the smash hit was rereleased in 1969, 1979, 1985 and 1991. Along with the memorable song “Cruella de Vil,” 101 Dalmatians is known for originating the term “Twilight Bark” (the system which dogs across the countryside use to communicate with one another), which also happens to be the name of the quick news bits section of the D23 Web site!
  • March 12:  The Absent-Minded ProfessorOriginally released March 16, 1961, the film stars Fred MacMurray — the first Disney Legend — as Medfield College’s Professor Ned Brainard, the inventor of the magical Flubber. The film also features the “Medfield Fight Song,” the first song ever penned by Richard and Robert Sherman for a Disney movie.
  • June 18:  The Parent TrapOriginally released June 21, 1961, the film was lauded not just for its imaginative story but for its technical advances. Disney legend Hayley Mills plays both twins Sharon and Susan, separated as children by their divorced parents, who set in motion a plan to reunite their estranged parents. The Parent Trap earned Academy Award® nominations for editing and sound.
  • Nov 19: Babes in ToylandStarring Ray Bolger, Annette Funicello, Ed Wynn, Tommy Sands, Ann Jillian, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran, Babes in Toyland was released December 14, 1961 and has become a holiday favorite. Revisit Tom (Sands) and Mary (Funicello) as they prepare to wed in Mother Goose Village while dodging the evil Barnaby (Bolger). The Forest of No Return, an incredible gun that shrinks its targets and, of course, the many beloved songs, are all part of this magical adventure.

D23 Tours at the Walt Disney Studios and Archives

D23 continues to offer this rare opportunity for D23 Members to enjoy a two-and-a-half hour tour of The Walt Disney Studios and Walt Disney Archives, hosted by D23 and Walt Disney Archives staff. Space is very limited. The 2011 tour dates are:

  • February 5
  • April 30

Disney’s Charitable Spirit Glows at Community Candlelight Event

Disney’s Charitable Spirit Glows at Community Candlelight Event

Prior to a special performance of the Candlelight Processional at Epcot on December 5, Walt Disney World Resort president Meg Crofton surprised Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida with a gift of $30,000 to benefit the charity’s Kids Café.

With 13 sites across Central Florida, Second Harvest’s Kids Café is an after-school program that provides nutritious meals to children from low-income families in a safe, secure environment. Disney has been a long-standing supporter of Kids Café, which daily feeds an average of 910 local children.

Second Harvest of Central Florida executive director Dave Krepcho claims Disney’s donation will make a difference in lives of those who need it most.

“These funds will go a long way in making it possible to provide 160,000 meals this year,” says Krepcho. “Kids Café meals not only fill bellies, the food provides critical nutrition that would not otherwise be possible for children in need. We are so grateful to have Disney’s support and commitment to the healthy lifestyles of kids in our community.”

Free Dining Offer at Disney World Ends Dec. 20

If you are thinking about going to Disney World still in 2010 or up until Sept. 29, 2011, you should look at the Free Dining Offer that is currently being offered.  This is one of the best, if not THE Best, Disney Vacation offer that Disney puts out there and right now it expires on December, 20th 2010.

There is no harm in booking this and then canceling if you need to, just follow Disney’s cancellation policies.

Here are the travel dates:

2010: Dec 10 – 21

2011: Jan 1 – 5  • 9 – 13  •  Jan 21 – Feb 3  •  Feb 11 – 17  •   Feb 25 – Mar 3  •  May 27 – Jun 2  •  Aug 19 – Sept 29

Why should I book with Pixie Vacations instead of booking directly with Disney?

There are several advantages to using Pixie Vacations.

Concierge Level of Service

We want to plan and book the best Disney Vacation you have ever had. We are not a call center; we are past Disney Cast Members and Disney Vacation Planners that know the ins and outs of Disney.  We are your agent and we work for you. Our goal is to plan the best Disney vacation, especially for you, at the lowest possible price. You will get your own Pixie Vacations agent, and we work one-on-one with you to plan your trip. Our concierge level of service is free.  We can help you plan special extra activities and also know about fun free things to do at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and on Disney Cruise Lines. This is a great luxury to have.  Again, we are not a call center that is pressured to get you on and off the phone as quickly as possible.

Lowest Possible Price

We offer the same prices as booking with Disney.  However we do have a key advantage when it comes to getting you the best possible price.  When you book with Pixie Vacations we will monitor your reservation.  If a Disney promotion comes out that is a better fit for you, we will move your existing reservation to the better package price.  If you book directly with Disney, they will not contact you to tell you there is now a better deal.   We have two kids ourselves and know how important it is to get the best vacation for your dollar. Also when you call or book online with Disney directly you will not get any discount at all unless you know to ask for a specific rate.   We know what specials to ask for to save you money.

A History of Disney Knowledge

We are a US based Mom and Pop company run by a family that worked at Walt Disney World for many years in Parks and Resorts.  We have been to the parks and resorts more times than we can count, during all seasons, day and night.   We have been to the parks and resorts when we were kids, as college students, and as a family now with our kids.   We have eaten at the Disney resort and park restaurants, we have been behind the scenes and we have possibly checked you in or given you park information from the Magic Kingdom information booth during one of your past trips. We have used Magical Express and the bus system and have been on Disney Cruise Line. We have planned conventions as a convention coordinator at the Grand Floridian when we were cast members and now as Disney vacation planner.  We have even sewn names on Mickey Mouse hats (and even got an extra $0.10 an hour back in the day!).

Free Dining Offer at Disney World Ends Dec. 20

Disney Dollars in the MouseTrap

Disney Dollars in the MouseTrap

So how much $$$ is too much $$$? It seems that every six months or so, there is another price increase at the House that the Mouse built. And at times it seems that the Mouse needs a bit more cheese than seems reasonable! If Walt Disney were alive today, what would he think about the rising costs of a Disney Park vacation?

Let’s start by considering why Walt dreamed up, designed, and then built Disneyland in the first place. Depending on which version you subscribe to, he first had the idea for a Park where parents and children could have fun together while watching his daughters play in a standard amusement park of his day. He wondered if there might be a way to join his family and share the memories of joyous play. There was. And long story short, Disneyland was born.

So lets keep in mind that Walt built the World’s first Theme Park so that families could have a place to play together and build memories that would last a lifetime. His bottom line was not The Bottom Line.

Do you remember how much it cost to gain entry into Disneyland in its first year? Only about an hour’s wages for the average man of the 1950’s. Care to guess how much inflation has impacted the average Disney Guest as to entrance fees today? It now costs the average man about at least a full day’s pay. If you make minimum wage, then it may cost between two and three days pay. Yikes!

So why the increase?

In all fairness, it must cost more now to run a Theme Park then it did in the 1950’s. Everything has increased in price. Utilities. Wages. Building costs. And anything else you can think of is likely much more expensive now. Could the Walt Disney Corporation survive if it dropped its prices?

One solution that I see is to address departmentalization. Yes, that’s the big word of the day! What it means is that Disney is now divided into sections that are self-sufficient and disconnected from the rest of the organization. So if one division makes an obscene amount of money (say, the movie division with a 2 Billion dollar take for just two movies in one season) it doesn’t share that surplus with another division that may be spending, and thus posting a ‘loss’ (such as the Theme Park division as it pours millions into expansion). So what does Disney the Corporation do? It cuts jobs in that Theme Park division so as to post a ‘gain’. Does that make sense to you?

Being as I spend my hard earned money across all of the Disney divisions, shouldn’t I be able to expect that they would help one another so as to keep the entire Brand solvent and progressive? I appreciate every Disney Cast Member and their contributions, and I don’t like hearing that they are downsized to balance a spreadsheet in one division!

The point: Maybe we need a little less Disney Corporation and a lot more Walt Disney!

DVD Review: The Boys, The Sherman Brothers’ Story

DVD Review: The Boys, The Sherman Brothers’ Story

Their litany is unparalleled. Their affect on popular culture is unmatched. Mention any of the songs from Mary PoppinsDVD Review: The Boys, The Sherman Brothers’ Story and most people will be able to sing along. (Are you humming A Spoonful of Sugar, yet?)

DVD Review: The Boys, The Sherman Brothers’ StoryThe tagline from the film, two brothers, fifty films, one thousand songs is quite accurate. If you were to present the Sherman brother’s contributions to the film Mary Poppins or the seminal theme park attraction, It’s a Small World, you would ensure their place in history. This film covers the spectrum of their musical contributions while interweaving the story of their lives together and apart.

Conceived and created by filmmakers and cousins Gregory V. Sherman and Jeffrey C. Sherman, this documentary divulges a unique portrayal of their fathers, Robert and Richard Sherman. We explore the brothers’ childhoods, marriages, early careers and close personal and professional relationship with Walt Disney. As the film progresses, you meet a larger cast of characters that worked with The Boys: Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Landsbury, Alan Mencken, Randy Newman, John Williams and many others. When these celebrities and musicians speak about the Shermans, you can sense the love and admiration.

DVD Review: The Boys, The Sherman Brothers’ Story

The overall tone of the film is reverential without being sappy or sweet. Gregory and Jeffrey Sherman (the filmmakers) set out to share their father’s legacies and to show the world the inside story of the Sherman families. Although they were business partners, Bob and Dick shared a rocky and tumultuous sibling relationship. We meet the family members in the film and see their perspective of the famous patriarchs. Imagine, for a moment, that your grandfather helped to write It’s a Small World (After All) or that you helped inspire A Spoonful of Sugar. Bob and Dick spent a large part of their adult lives apart; the filmmakers chronicled this aspect and set about to reunite the brothers. You will need to watch the film to see the outcome.

From a geekier perspective, it was great to see three of my favorite authors in the film and in the bonus features. Jeff Kurtti and Bruce Gordon served as co-producers for the film. Jeff and Bruce also served as the editors for the book, Walt’s Time. Another author and frequent Geek-End Update blogger, Brian Sibley gets a lot of screen time, as well, as he discusses the Boys influence on the Studio productions.

This film is a joy for Disney enthusiasts and will leave you hungering for more Sherman Brothers.

Shouldn’t this be enough to get you to buy this disc: A Spoonful of Sugar. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room. Winnie the Pooh. I Wan’na Be Like You. One Little Spark.Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

All of that and so much more!

This is a perfect addition to your Disney Geek library!

Top 10 Things to do at Walt Disney World to feel like a kid again

Top 10 Things to do at Walt Disney World to feel like a kid again

So we’ve all gone to Walt Disney World and done all of the E Ticket rides and attractions. We’ve thrilled to Space Mountain and Soarin. We’ve viewed all of the great Live Shows like Beauty and the Beast and Fantasmic. And we’ve eaten in all of the best places like Fulton’s Crab House and Boma. Yes, we’ve done all of the adult things.

Now it’s time to have some fun!

Here is a list of the Top Ten things that I think we should all do while at Walt Disney World to feel like a kid again:

#10 – WEAR A FUNNY HAT – Nothing says ‘Hey, I’m a big kid’ like wearing a pair of Mickey ears in public! Or, if a baseball cap is more your thing, get one with a Disney character or saying on it.

#9 – HUG A PRINCESS – Guys might want to ask first! But the idea here is to get in on the fun of interacting with the Costumed Characters whenever possible. And don’t forget to get photographs for future blackmail opportunities.

#8 – THE FLIGHT OF PETER PAN – Who never grew up? Peter Pan, of course! So who better to help you find the child within. So climb aboard and learn about faith, trust, and Pixie Dust all over again!

#7 – THE MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH – During one of our visits to the Magic Kingdom, my wife and I boarded a Hunny Pot and found that we were sharing it with another mature couple. When the Pot started to bounce up and down with Tigger, I yelled out: “Put your hands in the air!” Everyone did and we all laughed and had a great time!

#6 – TOMORROWLAND SPEEDWAY – This is a no-brainer! You board a miniature Sports Car that is impossible to steer well and (accidentally) bump into other cars as you circumnavigate the track. I dare you to do this without an impish smile on your face!

#5 – MONSTERS INC. LAUGH FLOOR – Who doesn’t like to laugh? And if you are one of the lucky few, you may find yourself on the Big Screen up front and on the proverbial spot! Make sure you act as silly as possible if this does happen to you. Remember: You’re a kid again!

#4 – IT’S TOUGH TO BE A BUG – And it’s tough not to have fun as you see, hear, smell, and feel all of those creepy-crawly insects throughout the show! And the best thing of all: You get to scream like a little girl!

#3 – PARTICIPATE IN STREETMOSPHERE – To really get that youthful feeling, try to get in on the action of any of the Streetmosphere skits. For example, you may end up playing the Dating Game at Hollywood Studios. Or you may become King Arthur at the UK Pavilion in EPCOT. Either way, you’ll have fun laughing at yourself!

#2 – VISIT INNOVENTIONS – Of course, a lot of the Exhibits and Interactive Games in this section of EPCOT are geared for the kiddies, but that’s the point! Revisiting the time in your life when exploration was King is bound to take off a year or two.

#1 way to feel like a kid again while visiting Walt Disney World is – YOU TELL ME!

We all remember something different about our childhoods. So what fond memories do you have of the time in your life when your parents did everything for you, and all you had to do was have fun? Chances are that Walt Disney thought of it and included it in some aspect of his Parks!

So lighten up and get out there and make a fool of yourself! I highly recommend it.

Should Disney Parks Tighten Security?

Should Disney Parks Tighten Security?

We are all too familiar with the bag checks when walking into the Disney Parks. I almost always carry a book bag  filled with camera, camcorder, water, snacks, schedule, maps, cell phone charger, etc. I have gotten used to opening up all the pockets and waiting my turn for inspection.

With the TSA doing patdowns, metal detectors, and back scatter X-Rays to just about every other form of personal space violation imaginable, it got me thinking…

Should the Disney Parks invest in a higher level of security when you enter the parks??

Chris was just down at Walt Disney World and she said that nothing further is being done for security. It is still just the simple bag check. She also pointed out something obvious I overlooked. If some really wanted to sneak a weapon in, couldn’t they put in in some place other than their bag? Hello McFly?

What about metal detectors? Is that a simple deterrent to add? I know that would of course extend the time it takes to get in the parks, but should that be the first level added to Disney security?

I am pretty sure you can’t even sneeze in the parks without it being seen by atleast 3 camera, and I love how they are not in plain site. So I could be totally oblivious to how Disney handles security. If I am tell me.

I know in this day and age this is a controversial subject and kudos for Disney preventing any sort of incident. I can’t think of any news story crossing my desk where Disney has any sort of person on person violence.

No matter where you look or listen this is something big you can’t help but hear people comment about.

Now is your chance to speak up. I have a poll running below where you can have your voice heard. Should we just leave things the way they are? Should we heighten security? Do you think Disney is already doing things that are not visible to the average person? We want to know.

Feel free to comment as well and let us know what you think.
