Disney World Quick Tips – Resort Hotel Fan Websites

Disney World Quick Tips – Resort Hotel Fan Websites

It’s a pretty safe bet that everyone here is a Disney fan. When you are searching for a resort you probably want to get objective or at least the non company opinions of each resort as well as the Disney line. It’s always a good idea to read the official Disney resort sites and you should but like medical treatment, a second opinion is generally helpful. The official Disney resort site is here but below Here are some links to several  Fansites for many resorts that offer a more candid opinion:

  1. Bay Lake Tower
  2. Caribbean Beach Resort
  3. POP Century
  4. Animal Kingdom Lodge
  5. Wilderness Lodge
  6. Shades of Green This one is the official SOG site but not a Disney site
  7. Polynesian
  8. Port Orleans
  9. Contemporary
  10. Grand Floridian
  11. Coronado Springs Resort

There may be more Fansites out there but I just haven’t found them yet. I have looked at all of these and while some are more detailed than others they all offer an alternative look at each resort. Remember, they are unofficial so include that in your thought process while assembling the information. I hope you find these sites both entertaining and useful. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Narcoossee’s: A Hidden Gem at Walt Disney World

Narcoossee’s: A Hidden Gem at Walt Disney World

On a recent trip to Walt Disney World, I was looking for new restaurants to try. It had to be a special place where my family and I could have a quiet, delicious dinner. After plenty of searching, I found a restaurant with an interesting menu in a great location. Enter: Narcoossee’s.

Narcoossee’s is a signature dining restaurant at the Grand Floridian Resort. Tucked away in the back of the resort, the restaurant stands on its own alongside the Seven Seas Lagoon. It is simply breathtaking. When my family and I arrived at the Grand Floridian, it took us a while to find the Narcoossee’s. If you secure advanced dining reservations at Narcoossee’s, allow yourself enough time to not only travel to the resort, but to get to the restaurant from the main building.

We had a reservation right when the restaurant opened, so it was fairly empty. We were immediately overwhelmed with so many choices on the menu. The selection is appropriate for a wide-range of appetites, but their specialty is seafood. While we perused the menu, our waitress brought us out warm bread (which was fresh out of the oven) with salted butter. Yum!

My sister and father immediately knew what they were getting — the surf and turf. This is Narcoossee’s signature dish, and it did not disappoint. The lobster was fresh and juicy, and the filet mignon was cooked perfectly. Both my mother and I ordered the filet, and I could not have liked my dish any better! It was oozing with flavor. The loaded mashed potatoes were so creamy — right up there with the delicious mashed potatoes at Le Cellier! My other sister opted for the chicken, and like the other dishes at our table, it was top notch.

The entrees were a success, but to be honest, I had my eye on dessert. Between the five of us, we selected two different desserts: the almond-crusted cheesecake and the strawberry shortcake. It took a little bit longer than expected for our desserts to arrive, but when they did, our jaws just about dropped to the table. I have never seen a more beautifully constructed dessert — ever! They tasted even better than they looked. The strawberries were so fresh, the shortcake was light, and if were appropriate for such a nice restaurant, I would have licked my plate! The desserts were a truly decadent ending to an amazing dining experience.

Narcoossee’s: A Hidden Gem at Walt Disney World

Throughout the entire meal, everyone kept saying — why haven’t we heard more about this place? I can’t help but think while writing this that I’m revealing Disney’s actual best kept secret (sorry, Disney Vacation Club). It would also be a great spot to catch Wishes from. We can’t wait to go back. I highly recommend you consider Narcoossee’s on your next trip.

Have you tried Narcoossee’s? Have you discovered a Disney restaurant that you consider to be a hidden gem? Let me know in the comments or @A_Leo on Twitter!

Disney Untangles a Winner!

Disney Untangles a Winner!

I had the pleasure a few days ago to see Tangled on the big screen. I went with my DD age 4 and my DS age.. I would get my butt kicked if I announced that. We tried to see this movie on Thanksgiving weekend but it was sold out so I wanted to wait till most people have seen it before we went. Let me just say it was worth the wait!

First off the whole movie has a Shrek like feel to it. I don’t know if it was the time period or the way Disney made the film look. Not that its a bad thing at all I like the Shrek movies.

I was not expecting them to sing songs in the movie, it was a welcomed surprise for both me and my little one. I think we were both expecting Toy Story where there are no songs. My little one loves music in movies some of her favorites are Oliver and Company, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, etc.

I felt Disney did a great job to make this both a boy and girl movie. Never going to far down each path but remaining right in the middle. So this would be great for both a boy or girl. Both the main characters and the quirky support characters really worked well together.

I don’t know why but one thing that bothered me was Rapunzel didn’t wear any shoes…I know weird right? But she is off walking around the forest and the city could she not have worn something..lol

All joking aside its a wonderful movie and I am glad to see it doing well in the theaters. Will it make as much money as Toy Story 3? Probably not. Will it be a Disney Classic? I believe so. A great story line, good actors, and catchy musical numbers will keep this one around for a long time.

I would probably rank this movie not quite in my top 10 Disney Movies but it would probably be like 11 or 12. It was good fun for the whole family and  I give it 2 hairy thumbs up!

Whatever happened to..Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears?

I might be dating myself here but am I the only one who remembers Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears? I grew up on this show and used to watch it every Saturday morning. It was great! I can still hear the theme song in my head to this day. But where did they go? I never hear or see any products referencing them at all.

Here is the official Wiki on those lovable bears:

Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears is an American animated television series that aired in the United States in the mid-1980s through the early 1990s. The series was the first animated production by Walt Disney Animation Television, and loosely inspired by the gummi bear candies; Disney CEO Michael Eisner was struck with inspiration for the show when his son requested the candies one day.The series premiered on NBC on September 14, 1985, and aired there for four seasons. The series moved to ABC for one season from 1989–1990, and concluded on September 6, 1991 as part of the Disney Afternoon television syndication package. Of the series’ 65 shows, 30 were double-features, consisting of two 11-minute cartoons, thereby bringing the series total to 95 distinct episodes overall. The show is well-remembered for its theme music, written by Michael and Patty Silversher.

The series was later rebroadcast on the syndicated Disney Afternoon block, and rerun on the Disney Afternoon through the summer of 1991. In later years, it was shown on the Disney Channel and Toon Disney, with its most recent televised airing occurring on Toon Disney on December 28, 2001. Seasons 1 to 3 of the series were released on DVD on November 14, 2006

I remember this show being the hook for me really getting into Disney. I watched other Disney programming and movies before hand but this show got my undivided attention. I even had a little rhyme I used to do to name all the Gummi Bears but it escapes me now.

With all the remakes and even with Disney bringing Tinkerbell back in a movie form. I think the Gummi Bears would be an excellent choice for making a comeback.

Here’s the Gummi Bear intro for you to enjoy and get stuck in your head for the rest of the day:

I Can’t Help It I Liked The Wand

I Can’t Help It I Liked The Wand

Spaceship Earth is a magnificent structure and a true marvel in its own right. It is an architectural wonder and one of the few true geodesic spheres in the world. It’s not just a pretty face either. One of the issues designers faced was what to do with the water from the occasional rain shower that occurs in Florida. They actually designed a channel system in each panel of the sphere that gathers and directs all of the runoff so that it ends up in the World Showcase Lagoon. Can you imagine what it would be like if that water ran down the sphere and ended up at the base – Oh My wet, wet, wet.

Now that you know how much I enjoy that magnificent structure I have one issue with it. As beautiful as it is, as structurally amazing as it is, and as iconic as it is the way it stands; it lacks personality. It did have personality for a while at the time of the Millennium Celebration and for several years after. We had a wonderful parade then also but that’s another subject for another time. For the Millennium, we got that spectacular Magic Wand. I know there may be one or two folks out there who don’t agree but please don’t be haters, I really liked it. It really gave Spaceship Earth the personality it lacked. Beautiful – yes, magnificent – yes, awe inspiring – yes, personality – no; it really livened things up.

It’s gone now and I can live with that. I still love Epcot and all that it represents. I still love Spaceship Earth and stand in awe every time I see it. But really, really, really, I did like the wand because of the excitement it generated in me when I saw it for the first time on each visit. One thing I did forget to mention, it did bring Mickey to Epcot in a huge way. Thanks for putting up with my rant and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Oldies But Goodies – Keeping The Vacation Affordable

Oldies But Goodies – Keeping The Vacation Affordable

As most people understand, we Oldies lean towards frugality and the older we get the more we seem to lean. I’m afraid that in a few years I’ll be leaning so much that my friends will change my name to “Pisa” (as in the leaning tower). I use every resource available to help keep costs in line but the first rule of thumb is don’t try to do it alone.

The first thing you should do is hire a Disney Specialist Travel Agent. They do not charge for their services but always confirm this by asking. Their paycheck comes directly from Disney and does not influence the price you pay. The reason for this is that if you rely on Disney cast members to inform you about discounts out of the goodness of their hearts you will have a long wait. They are trained not to offer but if you pursue by asking questions they will answer only your specific discount questions. A Disney specialist Travel Agent will be aware of the available discounts and the good ones will pursue all avenues to make your vacation as affordable as possible. You can’t make a better investment, it costs you zero and the rewards can be significant.

Always do some research on your own because even the best Travel Agents can’t know everything. There are lots of websites out there that track discounts and offer planning tools and advice. Among the very best as an aid to available discounts and planning tools is Nancy’s website, The Affordable Mouse located here. If you are looking for a site that keeps track of all Disney discounts including historical data you can go to Mary’s site, Mousesavers located here. Both are detailed and have lots of very positive help to offer even for the experienced Disney visitor.

If you are looking for help in getting cash available for your trip try Couponing To Disney not  just for training on how to visit Disney but also lots, and I do mean lots, of available coupons to help you save cash that you can put aside for your trip. A unique approach but lots of folks do it quite successfully.

O.K. my fellow Oldies, in summary, the most important things you can do to keep a trip to Walt Disney world affordable are to hire a Disney Specialist Travel Agent and do some research to find out what discounts are available. Only those of you who are very experienced Walt Disney World visitors should attempt to do it all on your own. I think I qualify as an experienced visitor and  I ALWAYS USE A DISNEY SPECIALIST TRAVEL AGENT, they will be your best friend in this endeavor!! As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

  • Oh, for goodness sakes!  Don’t wing it when you go to Disney World. You’ve got to plan. Even if you’re not a big planner, there are a few things you can do to make your trip a lot better.
  • Finally, the question of whether or not you should use a travel agent.  I’m going to say yes, and here’s why.  Hint: It can save you money and they don’t charge for their services. Their cut comes out of Disney’s pocket.

Loving Disney World – One Generation at a Time

Loving Disney World – One Generation at a Time

I visited Walt Disney World twice during my teens, once at fifteen and once at seventeen. As life would have it, I would not visit again until I was an adult and had a child of my own. The memories from those early trips are still vivid but I have only managed to hold onto 6 photos from those special visits. The years have flown by and I have been blessed to be able to share this wonderful place and all the magic of Disney with my husband and three children throughout these many years.

I had a melancholy moment (actually one of many) during our family trip to WDW a couple of weeks ago. I realized that my baby is the age I was during my last childhood visit. I thought it would be a neat nostalgic idea to have him pose in the exact place I posed at his age in one of my treasured six photos. This was in the guillotine in Liberty Square.

Loving Disney World – One Generation at a Time

This is me at 17

Loving Disney World – One Generation at a Time

This is Josh, 17

I started to think back to my teenage visits. Unlike my children, we didn’t visit Walt Disney World because my mom was a Disney fanatic, although she did come to her senses by the end of the trip. The park was only eleven years old back then and it was a really fun and beautiful place to vacation; that is why I was there. I had taken a friend with me so we spent very little time with my mom and stepdad, meeting up at meal times and eating together and then going to and from the resort together. I was never asked to wear matching shirts with my family and I don’t remember riding rides with anyone other than my sister during my first trip and my friend during my second.

I thought about how my son must see things so differently as a seventeen-year-old veteran of Walt Disney World. I expect that this will not be his last visit as a teen, however, unless something dreadful happens, as we should be back next year if all goes according to plan. I thought about how my family of 5 has worn matching shirts every year, at least one day, so that we could get our Christmas card picture taken. I thought about how I was laughing in my guillotine picture and he was making a sad face. When I asked him why he didn’t smile, he said very frankly, “well they are getting ready to cut off my head so I didn’t think there was much to smile about.” Always the actor, this one! I thought of how I was able to just stand straight up at the guillotine and lean over while Josh at 6’3″ had to basically lay forward to take his pic (haha).

Then I realized that Josh is the last in the third generation of Walt Disney World lovers in my family. It seems like I was just his age and now a whole new generation has been raised Disney in what seems like the blink of an eye. In the next few years, there might be a new generation of Disney Lovers in my family, especially if I have anything to do with it.

I look at families just starting out on this journey while I am at the parks. Having grown children now, part of me envies them and another part of me looks forward to the future of nurturing a love for Disney in a fourth generation. What will the future bring? I don’t know…but I hope it will bring many more family gatherings at Walt Disney World.

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Says Thank You for Your Interest

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Says Thank You for Your Interest

What you are about to read may be considered controversial. I debated long and hard prior to writing this post since I often don’t write things that could be perceived as critical of Walt Disney World. And, I would like them to invite me to an event in the future. That being said, this recent story was a big one in the social media community and I felt it needed to be covered. So, here it is.

Tensions were running high in the social media world this past Friday. So much so that #disneysmmoms became a trending topic on Twitter. So, what’s all the hullabaloo about? The 2011 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. In 2010, the inaugural celebration was invitation-only and brought mom bloggers and top-notch speakers together at Walt Disney World. More than your typical conference, the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration allowed attendees to bring their families to share in the magic. A couple of lucky attendees even had the opportunity to spend a night in Cinderella Castle.

Invitations to the 2011 event were coveted by bloggers everywhere but soon the word spread on Twitter – the 2011 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration would open registration to all social media moms! For only $375, attendees would spend a long weekend at Walt Disney World and at the Grand Floridian, no less. It gets even better, 7-day park hopper passes and some meals would be provided for the attendee and up to three family members.

So How Did Something So Right Go So Wrong?

The “Save the Date” email stated that space was limited and registration was on a “first come, first registered basis.” You can imagine the buzz for this event and the number of bloggers anxiously awaiting specifics on registration. In late November, the official announcement came and once again the #disneysmmoms hashtag was active on Twitter. Registration would open on Thursday, December 2 at 2pm ET. The announcement included the information that needed to be provided during registration which included the basics, and then some information on the registrant’s social media presence such as website name, website traffic, Twitter name, number of Twitter followers, etc. As far as I know, no eligibility requirements or exclusions were listed.

If Twitter is any indicator, moms across America were anxiously waiting at their computers well before 2pm ET to be sure they were one of the “first registered”, thus securing them a spot at this conference. Registration opened and was plagued with problems from the start. Hopeful attendees reported on the spinning orange circle that refused to let them into the registration site. Other bloggers reported that they accessed the registration page only to be promptly “kicked” out. Frustrations quickly mounted. So much so that the Disney SM Moms Twitter account sent out the following message at 2:13pm.

“There is high traffic on the server. The site IS operational and we are getting registrations so keep trying!”

Near the 3pm hour, more reports of people getting registered trickled in. After providing payment information, registrants received a registration acknowledgement saying, “Thank you for your registration for the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration at Walt Disney World Resort. We are currently reviewing your registration. All registrants wil be verified prior to registration confirmation.” The acknowledgement referred to verification but I think it’s safe to say that applicants assumed it meant the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration team would make sure the bloggers were who they said they were.

Shortly after 4pm, registration closed.

Friday, 2pm. Confirmation emails were being sent out.

Shortly after 2pm, excitement turned to disappointment, bitter disappointment in some cases. Turns out many registrants were being sent an email saying that the conference was filled before their registration could be confirmed. Reactions on Twitter and Facebook ranged from “WHAT?” to sentiments I can’t print on a family friendly blog. I don’t think this was the press Disney World was looking for.

So What’s the Problem?

Credit card information was accepted (though not charged) during the registration process and acknowledgement emails were sent. In fact, the email said, “Your Credit Card information is used to hold your registration spot until your information can be verified.” It did not say, “We registered more people than available spaces and you may not be able to attend.”

Reports of people who were confirmed but registered AFTER others who were sent the “conference is full” email were rampant in the blogosphere. People felt the process was unfair and lacked transparency. Were there criteria for attendance that was not disclosed? How could people who registered in the 2pm hour be denied attendance when registration wasn’t closed until after 4pm? What happened to “first come, first registered?”

I’m not a conspiracy theorist and I don’t know what happened but I do know that there are a lot of hard feelings out there and that’s not good for a company I love. So, in the spirit of helpful suggestions, here’s my take on how Disney could have improved the registration process for the 2011 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration.

Upgrade Your Servers. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone, let alone those in social media, that the response to the open registration would be overwhelming. Once the decision was made to open the registration to all bloggers, the Information Technology department should have ensured their network infrastructure could support the demand. Stress mounted when bloggers were faced with the orange circle of doom that kept spinning as they tried to access the site to register.

Set Expectations. This is one of the first lessons I learned in my professional life and it has served me well. Don’t promise something you can’t deliver. If registration was not truly first-come, first-registered, don’t say it is. If you’re going to accept more applications than spaces, be upfront about it. If there was a mistake or technical glitch, own up to it. It’s my experience that people are very understanding if they know the rules of the game before they play.

Wait List. I can understand Disney wanting to have maximum attendance at the event and there may be instances where registered attendees cannot be verified (that is they are not who they claim to be) so Disney needs to be able to fill those spaces. My county parks system has a successful wait-list system. If they can do it, it should be trivial for a company such as Disney to implement one.

Publish Criteria and Exclusions. If there were criteria for the conference, and I don’t know that there were, it should have been published well in advance. If you’re not eligible for something, you’re not going to apply. Mom bloggers wouldn’t have been left with a sense that they, and their blogs, had been personally rejected.

Rewrite Acknowledgement Page and Email. Instead of telling the applicant that her information is being verified in the acknowledgement email, leading one to believe she would be attending as long as she was who she said she was, and then sending a subsequent email saying that the conference was filled before she could be confirmed, state in the acknowledgement that not all applicants will be confirmed due to space limitations.

Did you apply for the Disney Social Moms Media Moms Celebration? What was your experience like and do you have any suggestions for next year’s process?

If you will be attending this event, congratulations! We would love to hear about your experience when you return from the conference.

My Disney Dream Office

My Disney Dream Office

If you read my blog last week, “Top 10 Disney Holiday Gift Guide by Brenda,” you may have noticed that the items I listed were a little overpriced and thus it was a true WISH list. My terrific husband decided to play elf, though, and actually created the one gift he could, as close as he could to my original wish.

Item 3 in my list was to renovate my home office to be an exact replica of this room featured in “One Man’s Dream” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I am so appreciative for all his hard work, not to mention the fact that he was even willing to tackle the project, that I just had to share the results with everyone. So, here they are.

The original request – the office from One Man’s Dream – is pictured above.

And this is my new Disney-inspired home office. I sure wish I was a work-at-home mom because I would never leave it if I didn’t have to.

My Disney Dream Office

My Disney Dream Office

I figured that if we could do it in a weekend, anyone else could too – assuming you have a lot of the Disney souvenirs already. For anyone interested in creating your own Disney office, here are the steps we took to accomplishing this feat.

First, we took everything out of the room except for the furniture. We did not move any furniture around – everything stayed as it was. We then took all the pictures off of the walls.

I purchased a 3’ X 4’ cork board from my local office supply store for $46. We hung it on the one wall large enough and with enough empty space to house it. Then I gathered up a lot of my memorabilia that we have accumulated when traveling to WDW and displayed it on the bulletin board.

I took all the knick knacks, photo albums, stuffed animals, toys and park pictures from around the house and placed them on shelves.

Finally, I went around the house and collected all of my pictures (like Putting a Smile on the World), as well as my pin board and D23 certificate and, finally, we hung them all.

My Disney Dream Office

Then, I organized my desk, sat back and looked at my new inspirational office, told my husband it was perfect and that I love him dearly for doing this for me, and began to blog away.

Do me a big favor please and make a Disney dream of yours come true real soon!

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

I am sure that being at Disney World for Christmas is dreamy but, since we spend our holiday at home, we love bringing Disney into our home for Christmas. Through the years we have accumulated many beloved treasures that keep us in the spirit and brighten every day of our holiday season. Coming up to the door gives our friends a little hint of what they might expect inside. We love to have family and friends over during the holidays.

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

Nothing says you are welcome, wanted and loved like Mickey greeting you with a “Ho, Ho, Ho” as soon as you walk in! Mickey has a sensor on his foot so once you pass in front of him he is welcoming you with his sweet little voice. It really puts us in the holiday spirit.

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

Just inside our home we adorn our entry way table with our modest little Disney village. We collect these pieces by purchasing one per year after the holidays when they go on sale.

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

We have been collecting ornaments for our tree for many years. It is one of the things we look forward to most during our annual November trips – choosing what this year’s ornaments will be. My kids spend a while in the Days of Christmas store at Downtown Disney to make sure they choose just the right one and they are always great ones! As you can see, our tree is full of them.

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

And of course Mickey & Minnie are atop the tree with a smooch!

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

Our fireplace is home to all of our special Disney stockings. Mickey and Minnie also cozy up on a bunch of poinsettias below.

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

Our kitchen and dining room are decorated too. We tend to congregate in these areas (heritage hazard) so we have to keep up the Disney Christmas spirit in here. Nothing says Christmas like a bunch of Mickeys and a plateful of cookies!

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

A Very Merry Disney Christmas…at Home!

We decorate as many areas of our home as we possibly can. We really enjoy having all of our treasures out to make our home feel more like Disney. Someday we may visit Disney World at Christmastime but for now we enjoy having a Disney Christmas at home. So from Texas to wherever you are, I want to wish you all a wonderful, magical merry Disney Christmas!

Cupcake Showdown: Babycakes NYC vs. Starring Rolls.

Cupcake Showdown: Babycakes NYC vs. Starring Rolls.

Just a few days ago, I had the opportunity to try Babycakes NYC, a new bakery in Downtown Disney on the site of the former McDonalds. Babycakes, which has locations in New York City and Los Angeles, is different: All their baked goods are vegan and gluten-free. For the uninitiated, vegan means that no animal products are used, so replacements have to be found for eggs, cream and butter.  Gluten-free means that no wheat flour is used; exotic flours like teff and rice flour are used instead.  These flours can be tricky to work with, so baking this way requires a lot of skill.  Finally, some Babycakes items are sweetened with agave nectar rather than regular sugar.

Babycakes sells cupcakes, brownies, cream filled sandwich cookies, and donuts.  I had the good fortune of meeting the manager of  Babycakes, a Disney fan who relocated from New York to Orlando to set up the shop.  She explained how everything was made and was a good sport about being a vegan baker located right across from a restaurant selling chicken . . . lots and lots of chicken.  The counter itself is simple in white and pink.  It’s cute and a bit retro-looking, as are the sweets which look very homemade.  I was impressed that their take-away boxes were not styrofoam, but sturdy white cardboard.

Cupcake Showdown: Babycakes NYC vs. Starring Rolls.

My son and I tried the red velvet cupcake and the chocolate frosted donut. The cupcake was tender and sweet and tasted just like a regular red velvet cupcake. The frosting wasn’t as smooth and stiff as regular frosting, but it was excellent and you could taste the vanilla.  What really got me though, was the donut.    Babycakes’ donuts aren’t fried; that probably shouldn’t surprise you.  Instead, they’re baked cake donuts and the texture, which was excellent, is more like a coffee cake. It didn’t taste like a regular friend donut, in that it wasn’t crispy on the outside, but it also wasn’t greasy. What you tasted were the good ingredients that the bakers used, including a bit of citrus that really added something to the flavor.  The glaze was really amazing. One thing I really dislike is when you can’t taste the actual ingredients in a dessert, but only sugar. Here, I tasted the chocolate.  You could tell they weren’t skimping on the quality of the chocolate like some places do.  Most importantly, I could not tell that these were vegan or gluten-free desserts.

Cupcake Showdown: Babycakes NYC vs. Starring Rolls.

The next day we tried the Butterfinger cupcake in Starring Rolls, located in Hollywood Studios.  We needed a basis for comparison, right?  I’m usually a big fan of this place. I think the pastries and sandwiches are pretty good, but I’d never tried any of the much-lauded cupcakes.  The Butterfinger cupcake is huge, and for the price of a snack credit, it’s a good deal, at least as far as volume goes.  The outside has a hard chocolate shell covered in that familiar orange Butterfinger crumb and the inside is a chocolate cupcake with a bit of caramel in the middle, topped with a huge glob of vanilla frosting.  It certainly looked impressive.

Now here’s the shocker:  Even though it looked great, it was just okay. In fact, it really was only borderline okay.  I thought the Babycakes cupcake was much better.  Now, I will say that I love to bake and because I’ve been doing it for years, I tend to notice when someone uses cheap ingredients or uses a lot of shortcuts, so I’m to please when it comes to desserts.  Have you ever had a dessert that doesn’t really taste like what it’s supposed to be, it just tastes like sugar?  Well that’s how this cupcake tastes.  I didn’t taste the chocolate or any of the other ingredients, just the overwhelming taste of sugar.   That, to me, is a cheap, mass-produced dessert, dumbed down for the least-discerning customer.  While I’m generally impressed with the quality of Disney desserts, especially at their table service locations, this was a disappointment.  In contrast, the smaller, less pretty Babycakes cupcake actually tasted like a real dessert.  I found myself thinking about that amazing donut while I was eating this cupcake, wondering why the chocolate glaze at a vegan bakery tasted so much better.

In fairness, Starring Rolls sells far more cupcakes than Babycakes and when you’re baking at that kind of volume, you’re not going to use the most expensive ingredients, but it should at least taste like what it’s supposed to be, right?  What  Babycakes is doing is turning out smaller batches and using better ingredients.  The skill required in baking vegan and gluten-free treats can’t be understated–it takes a lot of talent to turn unfamiliar ingredients into a familiar treat.  Price wise, both cupcakes cost around the same amount, but the Starring Rolls cupcake is easily twice the size.  What the Babycakes cupcake has going for it is taste, which in my opinion was far suprerior.  Next time I buy a cupcake at Disney World, it will be a delicious little Babycakes cupcake.  And maybe one of those donuts too.
