Keys to the Kingdom: Liberty Square

Keys to the Kingdom: Liberty Square

During my Keys to the Kingdom tour this past November, I learned so many awesome details about the Magic Kingdom. This is another installment of the memories from that wonderful tour. Spoiler alert!

Walt Disney was a genius in many areas. One such area was his attention to detail. He always wanted everything to be perfectly represented in the park as design integrity was very important to him. If Walt didn’t know exactly how something should be represented he would gather a research team to study the facts to determine the most authentic design possible.

After Walt’s death, when the imagineers set out to design Liberty Square at Walt Disney World, they wanted to keep with Walt’s standard. This is the reason you will never find a restroom while strolling through Liberty Square.

If you eat at Columbia Harbour House, and you need to find the restroom, the cast members could tell you honestly, “I’m sorry but you will have to go to Fantasyland for that.” You see, if you go to the restroom inside Columbia Harbour House it is indeed located in Fantasyland. You might ask why this is. It is simply because there were no indoor toilets back in colonial times. Truth-be-known, the only reason there is one inside Columbia Harbour House at all is due to health regulations.

When visiting Walt Disney World, you have to always be on the lookout. Remember to look all around, up and down and everywhere. The magic of Disney is in the attention to detail. Another example of this can be found while strolling through Liberty Square. One might notice that the ground is brown in the center. It is meant to resemble a river – a river of sewage, I’m afraid, as in colonial times. Without indoor toilets, everyone collected their waste and then threw it out of their upper windows into the middle of the road. The brown gravel looking part of the pavement is a representation of that.

It is fascinating how much time has been spent on every aspect of Walt’s vision. There are new and exciting things to discover each time you visit. Plan a trip soon — you’ll be glad you did!

The Best Ice Cream at WDW – Downtown Disney’s Ghirardelli Soda Fountain

The Best Ice Cream at WDW – Downtown Disney’s Ghirardelli Soda Fountain
Ghirardelli Soda Fountain, Downtown Disney.

When I’m at Walt Disney World, my taste buds crave ice cream. And if you scream for ice cream, too, try some of the best ice cream on property at Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop.

Ghirardelli (pronounced gear-ar-delly, for everyone who’s like me and forgets) has two connected stores. The Chocolate Shop sells packaged candies, baked goodies and other merchandise. That side of Ghirardelli is also where you can buy coffee and chocolate drinks.

But it’s the slurp-tastic Soda Fountain that gets my attention with its range of ice cream concoctions, from simple scoops to thick shakes and floats to lavish sundaes. The fountain also offers a number of coffee, espresso and chocolate beverages for those who prefer those treats as well as baked goodies filled with – you guessed it – Ghirardelli chocolate.

Ghirardelli’s Ice Cream Decisions, Decisions!

From the moment you follow your nose and practically float into Ghirardelli, you are treated to Disney-level sensory overload in your ice-cream experience.

There are several ice creams for single and double scoops, or to tempt you to (over)indulge with their ginormous sundaes: Butter Pecan, Ghirardelli Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Cookies ‘n Cream, Espresso Chip, Ghirardelli Chocolate, Ghirardelli Rocky Road, Kona Coffee, Mint Chocolate Chip, Strawberry, Strawberry Cheesecake, and of course classic Vanilla.

Toppings top the experience, and you can add the following in addition to whipped cream or chopped almonds: Blueberry, Butterscotch, Chocolate Syrup, Crushed Pineapple, Dark Hot Fudge, Marshmallow Cream, Milk Hot Fudge, Warm Caramel, Warm Peanut Butter, and Sliced strawberries.

These tasty flavors are served in a non-edible dish or one of these tasty options: a cake cone, sugar cone, or a chocolate-dipped waffle cone or bowl.

Ghirardelli Ice Cream Specialties: Sundaes, Splits and Shakes…Oh My!

A menu provides a list of ice-cream specialties that are nearly impossible to choose from. Just check out the brief descriptions of just SOME of these nearly-irresistible dishes. (See the a more complete sample Ghirardelli Soda Fountain menu.)

The World Famous: Ghirardelli’s classic hot-fudge sundae with two scoops of vanilla ice cream and homemade hot fudge, topped with whipped cream, chopped almonds and a cherry.

The Gold Rush: A peanut butter and hot fudge sundae. It’s topped with whipped cream, chopped almonds, cherry, and a Ghirardelli Squares milk chocolate. (Pictured at left.)

Espresso Escape: A sundae with two scoops of espresso chip ice cream, covered in dark chocolate hot fudge sauce and topped with whipped cream and a square of Espresso Escape Intense Dark chocolate.

The Golden Gate: Ghirardelli’s Banana Split, featuring vanilla, strawberry and chocolate ice cream, with classic toppings on each: crushed pineapple, sliced strawberries, and homemade chocolate syrup. Of course, the banana split offers fresh bananas, whipped cream, chopped almonds, and a cherry on top.

The Haight AshBerry: This Very Berry Sunday features strawberry cheesecake ice cream, sliced strawberries, vanilla ice cream with blueberry topping. The sundae is topped with whipped cream and chocolate-covered blueberries and a chocolate dipped waffle roll for a crunch.

Mint Bliss: This sundae combines a scoop each of mint chip and chocolate ice cream, dark chocolate hot fudge sauce, whipped cream and a square of Mint Bliss Intense Dark chocolate.

Nob Hill: Billed a sippable sundae, Nob Hill blends two scoops of vanilla ice cream with Ghirardelli’s homemade hot fudge and tops it with semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Of course, there are many more ice cream treats to sample or create your own mix-and-match options.

Be warned: because Ghirardelli Soda Fountain’s ice cream tastes as good as it smells, the store is often quite busy. Trust me, though, it’s worth the mouth-watering wait.

First Timers: What to Expect When You’re Expecting (to visit Disney World).

First Timers: What to Expect When You're Expecting (to visit Disney World).

Okay, so you’re a Disney newbie. What should you expect when you get there?  If you’re coming from up North, don’t expect wide verandas and southern belles. Culturally, Orlando has a little bit of everything, but it’s not really Southern, although you can get good barbecue and sweet tea.  Here’s a quick run-down on the area for first time guests.

The Airport. You’ll likely fly into the Orlando International Airport (MCO). Some vacationers choose the smaller Sanford Airport, about an hour from Disney World, to save money, but if you choose this option  don’t forget to add in the cost of transportation to and from the airport, as it isn’t serviced by Magical Express.  The main part of MCO is designed like a big rectangle with monorail lines out to the four terminals located at each corner of the rectangle.  Shopping, a hotel, full-service restaurants, the baggage claim area, and the oh-so-important Magical Express are all located in the main part of the airport.  Disney travelers make up a big part of this airport’s business so conveniently, you’ll see signs for Magical Express everywhere.

Weather and Geography: I’ll admit, this is probably an obvious one. It’s hot.  And it’s humid. And it rains frequently during the summer. But the winter can be all over the place: Hot one day, cold the next. Chances are you’ll experience some of the nicest weather the region has to offer during this time, but last January, it actually snowed, so be prepared. I always tell people who are visiting Orlando during the late fall through the early spring to bring a waterproof coat with a liner that zips out, that way you can use them together or alone.  This is particularly true for children who will be outside at night.

Newcomers are often surprised by how much water there is in Central Florida.  There are literally small ponds and lakes everywhere, which can be very pretty but dangerous.  If you’re renting a house and you have small children, you’ll want to take note of any bodies of water near the house; people are often surprised to find small ponds just a few yards from the back of the house.  Sadly, every year several people in Central Florida drown when they drive into those ponds, many of which are right next to roads. This has even happened on  Disney property, so be extra careful, especially on days when it rains heavily and you may have trouble seeing the road.

Swimming in lakes should be avoided.  Part of this is due to the presence of snakes and the alligators.  I mean no one wants to run into a gator, right?  But it’s these three little words that should really worry you:  Brain eating amoebas! I’m not making this up. Apparently these little critters live in fresh water when it sits stagnant at over 80 degrees Fahrenheit.  If you ingest them, it can lead to sickness or even death. Yes, people do swim in these lakes, but it’s not worth ruining your trip over to take the chance.  If you want to experience swimming in local fresh water, try some of the nearby state parks that have beautiful clear springs for swimming and boating. These pristine swimming holes are popular with locals and stay around 70 degrees during the summer, making them a nice alternative to the theme parks on a hot day.

Culture:   Florida, as a state, is a mix of many things:  Part southern in the northern part of the state, part melting pot everywhere, expect to meet people from all over the country and the world.  In Orlando you’ll encounter more newcomers than true locals.  As the number one travel destination in the world, this small city has seen every race, religion and background.  You’ll see people of great wealth and those with almost nothing, just on International Drive.  You can find just about any type of food although it might not be exactly like it is back home (bagels, pizza).  Downtown Orlando has several interesting museums and neighborhoods like Little Saigon and Little Brazil, which have inexpensive ethnic food and shops.  The area is, overall, very friendly and worth the trip from the theme parks.

Driving: I-4, the main highway running through the Orlando/Disney World area experiences some congestion in the stretch that goes through Orlando itself. Other than rush hour traffic, the rest of I-4 in this moves at a good pace.  Don’t expect Los Angeles style drivers–the speed limit on I-4 is a low of 50 MPH in downtown and as high as 65 near some of the attractions.  Major roads near the attractions are congested on the weekends, particularly International Drive.  Disney roads are rarely congested with the exception of the Downtown Disney area.

First Timers: What to Expect When You're Expecting (to visit Disney World).

One interesting quirk I’ve found is that if you ask  locals how to go to Disney World from the airport, they’ll likely tell you a way that avoids tolls. This is very thoughtful, but for a first timer it can be confusing. Make sure the directions you get are the ones that use the main roads.

Once on Disney property you won’t need a map or  GPS, although even with those trademark purple signs,  it’s easy to get lost on Disney property.

First Timers: What to Expect When You're Expecting (to visit Disney World).

Fortunately, it’s very difficult to actually stay lost because those signs are just about everywhere.  It helps to know where your resort is located in relation to the theme parks or Downtown Disney, since many signs will point you toward the theme parks (or “Epcot Area Resorts,” for example)  first and then to the specific resorts.

Tolls:  First timers are often surprised by the many toll roads around Orlando. If you’ll be driving, don’t forget to bring change. The fines are pretty steep if you don’t pay. I’m embarrassed to tell you how many times I’ve sat at a toll booth, caught without change, only to have some kind person come up behind me and toss the .35 cents into the basket.  Let’s just say I’ve learned my lesson.  I hope.

Gas:  Orlando gas prices tend to stay very close to the national average. The exception is at gas stations near the airport, where price gauging has reached a whole new level of arrogance.  In recent months, Orlando officials have called for ordinances which require all gas stations to post prices so that drivers can see before they pull into the station, but that doesn’t keep them from charging nearly double for gas and taking advantage of tourists who are in a hurry to meet their plane and don’t know the area very well.

Surprisingly, some of the least expensive gas in the area can be purchased at the three Hess Marts on Disney property. They are at the Car Care Center next to the Magic Kingdom parking lot; Downtown Disney; and near the Boardwalk Resort.  You can also buy soft drinks and other items for considerably less than at your resort gift shop.

Internet: While many large hotels in the surrounding Disney resort area have free internet, Disney does not (with the exception of free internet for Disney Vacation Club owners at DVC resorts). You’ll need to pay around $10 for 24 hours of internet service in your resort room. There is very little free WiFi on Disney property. It’s essentially non-existent in the parks.  You can purchase 24-hours of WiFi for use in the lobbies on the Contemporary, Coronado Springs, the Yacht and Beach Club, and the Grand Floridian.  It costs $9.95.  This thread on Disboards explains everything guests need to know about internet use on Disney property.

Groceries:   Hotel gift shops have a limited amount of merchandise and it’s usually quite expensive. If you don’t have a vehicle, try Garden Grocer. They’ll deliver right to your resort.  I also like WeGoShop, which will do your shopping for you for a small fee.  The Disney resort area has many of the same stores you’re used to at home. There’s a Whole Foods near SeaWorld, a Super Target just off property and numerous Walmart stores. I find that the Super Target on Highway 192 has the best selection and prices.  For locations and more information, please see this post.

Wildlife:  We probably should talk about these guys:

First Timers: What to Expect When You're Expecting (to visit Disney World).

It’s true that they’re everywhere in Central Florida, even showing up on Disney property, but it’s rare that you’ll actually see one.  Avoid swimming in lakes and challenging one to a wrestling match. Gators are notoriously crooked and like to fight dirty.  Lesson:  Don’t trust a gator.

Not only have I never seen a gator on Disney property, I’ve never seen a snake, which are known to appear from time to time and inspire fun threads on Disney message boards.  I have however, seen ducks and squirrels parading around the parks and resorts, as well as lizards, the odd deer, innocuous possums, the dreaded and aptly-named Lovebugs, and the occasional cockroach.

The best advice anyone can give regarding local wildlife is probably what you do at home: Avoid it.  Except those cockroaches.  Do with them what you will.

What to do for the Disney Dad for Fathers Day?

What to do for the Disney Dad for Fathers Day?

This morning my wife asked me if there was something I wanted for Fathers Day. I was trying to think of a few ideas to give her and thought this would be a great list to get the Disney Dad for Fathers Day. I really liked our writer Lisa article that talked about Ten Ways to Celebrate with Dad at Walt Disney World. While I would love to be at Disney World on fathers day weekend I have to be a bit more practical now that we have 2 girls.

I have come up with a list of a few items you can GET or DO back home for your Disney Dad for Father’s Day.

  1. Make Mickey Mouse Waffles – Breakfast in bed Sunday morning is a great idea and very inexpensive. If you have the special waffle maker and recipe you could make him some Mickey Mouse Waffles. No waffle maker no problem try Mouse Ears pancakes. No special tools needed other than a steady hand. If your feeling really daring try make your own Disney’s Kona Cafe Breakfast for dear old dad.
  2. Get a Disney Tattoo – I think all Disney Fans secretly want one. I know for me I would love to have another just never have the money. This would be a very unique and interesting idea for Father’s Day. Check out all these Disney Tattoos.
  3. Take Dad to the Disney Store – Not everybody has a Disney Store in their town. I know our closest one is about a hour and a half away. But still it would make for a great family outing. Take a day trip, go get a nice lunch and let him take home a gift of his choice. Like the coffee mug above.
  4. Go See a Disney Movie – Argh! some little Disney Movies comes out very soon matey..Hmm can’t remember what the name is..Just Kidding. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens this summer, along with a whole bunch of other Disney Flicks. I suggest if your going to see it goto Fandango or Movie Tickets and get those tickets early as I am sure they will sell out! Also THOR is still in theaters and Capt America will be out later this summer!!!
  5. Give him a Disney day – Let him go out golfing with his buddies, take in a movie, or something else by himself. I love my family to death but sometimes I enjoy just some me time to relax with my boys or sleep in.
  6. Rent some Disney DVD’s – Hit up the Redbox or stop by Blockbuster and spend the day watching Disney Movies. Get some pizza delivered, and you are set for a day of doing nothing! You can’t swing a stick on Couponing with Disney without hitting a free rental. Don’t ask me how Kristin finds all these sweet deals!
  7. Buy a Disney Video Game – Disney is releasing a bunch of new Disney Games in the coming months. Not to mention there are a lot of really good ones out now. Go get him a game for his gaming console he will love. Then give him some quiet time to play or play it with him! I bet you can find Epic Mickey pretty cheap.
  8. Make him a Disney Meal – Maybe breakfast isn’t his thing. There are tons of recipes you can make from all your favorite Disney restaurants.
  9. Buy him a BluRay – As a gift idea if he doesn’t have a Bluray player go out and get him one. With a metric TON of Disney films releasing on on Bluray/DVD Combo Pack you can’t miss. I recommend Samsung Bluray players! Check out the complete list of movies coming out from Disney here.
  10. Take him on a Disney Getaway – If you have the time or money. Nothing like a little weekend getaway. Talk to our friends at Pixie Vacations for a free quote or some help in making it happen.

15-Nights, Five Ports of Call-Experience Hawaii on Disney Cruise Line

15-Nights, Five Ports of Call-Experience Hawaii on Disney Cruise Line

If you have been wanting to experience Hawaii, but never ventured there on your own, Disney has you covered! With the opening of Aulani in August 2011 and the first ever 15-night cruise to Hawaii (Sailing April 29, 2012) you can now experience this popular tropical paradise with all the magic Disney has to offer.

Experience the highlights of Hawaii aboard the Disney Wonder at the four ports of call: Hilo-Hawaii, Nawillwill-Kauai, Honolulu-Oahu, Kahulul-Maui and sample the unique experiences that each port has to offer.

In Hilo, you can experience all the culture and history of Hawaii. There are many shops, restaurants and museums as well as the wonders of a tropical paradise that you would expect, such as tropical rainforests, waterfalls and volcanoes. If you’ve longed to learn about Hawaii you’ll be delighted to tour the Macadamia Nut Factory and learn about the history of sugar cultivation.

In Honolulu (Oahu) you’ll experience a bustling city that is home to famous beaches, world class restaurants and boutiques and deeply rooted history. Enjoy the feel of city life and then escape outside of the city to the Dole planation that hosts various activites for the whole family and shows the cultivation process of Hawaii’s signature fruit: the pineapple (Dole Whips Anyone?!)Here in Honolulu history is celebrated (stop by the 18 foot bronzed statute of King Kamehameha, the first ruler to unite the Hawaiian islands) and pay respects to the The USS Arizona which provides a memorial of Pearl Harbor. Honolulu has both a deep history and a bright future, nearby Honolulu (in Ko Olina) Disney’s newest resort and spa, Aulani, opens it doors in August 2011.
Kahului is described as the crossroads of Maui, with both busy city sights and the feeling of a private island oasis. Take a drive on Hana, a famous twisting road where you’ll discover breathtaking cliffs and waterfalls. Across the island, feel like a celebrity in Wailea, and maybe see some too! Only the best in restaurants, shops and lush resorts it’s the place to be for the rich and famous! From the creme de’ la creme to the 19th century rustic village of Lahaina; there’s something for everyone on Maui!

Nawiliwili is the oldest of the major Hawaiian islands, with all the grand majestic sites you’d expect to see here: 50 miles of beaches, jungles, breathtaking waterfalls and the peaks of famous mountains (Mount Kawaikini and Mount Walaleale). Sculpted by wind and water for centuries this island is referred to as “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”.

While Disney Cruise Line has not yet released the port adventures you can be sure these landmark sites and tropical locations will be hosting a wide range of activities: swimming, snorkeling, parasailing, hiking, horseback riding and historical landmarks such as Pearl Harbor. The 15-Night cruise has nine sea days and five port days (not including the Port of Los Angeles) with plenty of onboard and port excursions to experience. Let’s hope that a stop at Aulani will be in the future itinerary!

So you’re at Walt Disney World and you’re hungry. Not a problem! At the more than 475 eateries across the Resort, including snack carts, fast food and full-service restaurants, nearly 6,000 different dishes are available around the World, from pre-meal appetizer to post-dinner dessert, from morning coffee to evening nightcap.

Annually

  • 10,000 dessert soufflés are baked at Victoria & Albert’s.
  • 63,000 Cobb salads are tossed at The Hollywood Brown Derby.
  • 1.3 million pounds of turkey drumsticks are consumed at Walt Disney World Parks.
  • 70,000 orders of meatloaf and mashed potatoes are ordered at the 50’s Prime Time Café.
  • 1 million pounds of watermelon are served at Walt Disney World Resort.

That’s a lot of food! In fact, it’s too much. More than 50,000 pounds of food go uneaten each month at Walt Disney World Resort. That provision, however, does not go to waste. The Disney Harvest Food Program collects and donates the excess prepared food that has not been served to the homeless of Central Florida.

The Disney Harvest truck, in cooperation with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, delivers to 48 agencies each week, providing nutritious meals to over 1,000 children in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. The organization distributed over 700,000 pounds of food in 2010 alone.

Disney takes the time to Feed the Children

You can help too!

We often think of underprivileged nations suffering and in need, but 12 million children in America alone are at risk of going hungry. Several recent natural disasters, like the Alabama tornadoes and the Mississippi River flooding, have displaced families and destroyed many homes.

A national organization, Feed the Children, has made it their goal to prevent hunger in the United States and around the world. Feed The Children accepts donations not only for food, but for other life-sustaining products. They are currently in particular need of truckloads of the following products:

  • Water
  • Non-Perishable Items
  • Personal Hygiene
  • Baby Items
  • New Underwear

What can you do to help? Organize a group collection benefiting Feed the Children. You can assemble a group of like-minded friends from any area of involvement. Are you part of a home school support group? Are your kids in scouts? Do they attend church activities? Do they play organized sports? Do you work for a corporation who could sponsor a collection? Do you have neighbors willing to come together for a shared cause?

Get your friends together! Include your kids’ friends! Divide them into groups of five or ten and assign each group to collect an item listed above. To find a drop-off site or arrange for donation pickup, contact Feed the Children at P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101, or phone 1-800-627-4556.

Disney Confidential – Tim Burton gets the shaft again from Disney

Disney Confidential - Tim Burton gets the shaft again from Disney

Hey there guys and gals Anonymouse here bringing you the best in Disney Gossip. I hope everyone is having a great week! I hear there is some kinda major geek, nerd Star Wars event going on at Walt Disney World this past week.

Actually I have been having fun laughing at watching all the Star Wars Nerds talk about Star Tours. And here I thought Chip was the biggest Disney nerd I have ever seen. He is starting to look a little normal.. I say little cause he is about the size of a Umpa Lumpa.. I have enjoyed reading all the news, tweets, and pictures from Star Tours 2 Live.

Anywho news outta Hollywood today comes to us from Disney Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie. It seems ex Disney employee who got picked back up and then dropped again Tim Burton is no longer directing the live action Disney film. No word on if he quit or got canned.

According to Hollywoodreporter.com, Burton had only been tentatively attached to the project, yet his involvement had been enough to spur Disney into hiring his Alice In Wonderland collaborator Linda Woolverton to write the script.

Presently Disney is shopping around for a new director and has some interesting leads. So Chip keep those small fingers crossed that stint you did directing 2 Lonely Deeks might be enough to land you the Janitors Directors chair for Maleficent.

Stay tuned for more details on Disney’s Maleficent in the coming months.

That is all the time I have for today. See you kiddies next time.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue Spoiler-free Review

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue Spoiler-free Review

This past Saturday while my wife and I were covering the Pixar Weekend at Epcot I checked my Twitter to find that it was blowing up! Star Tours was indeed doing a soft opening to work out any kinks before the actual opening on May 20th. Unfortunately we didn’t get out of our event in time to ride it that night so we kept our fingers crossed that it would be open on Sunday. We got up first thing and checked our Disney iPhone app and luckily our wish was granted.

We ended up meeting up with MuppetCast host and Sorcerer Radio correspondent Steve Swanson to hop aboard the Starspeeder 1000. The lines were pretty short and I believe we waited less than 30 minutes for the two times we rode the attraction. Both times we ended up doing two very different sequences. I’ll keep this review spoiler-free until for now. The cast members were also really strict and had signage posted prohibiting the use of cameras and video cameras inside the attraction. I’m sure that will change soon as it opens.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue Spoiler-free Review
Sorcerer Radio's Aljon & Kristen with MuppetCast Podcast's Steve Swanson

Suffice it to say that the experience was amazing. The interior was fresh and completely redone. There were two different cast member costume variations: one for those working the attraction as flight staff, and two, the workers inside Tatooine Traders. They looked amazing! Steve examined the 3D glasses and noticed that they were different than the ones used in Muppet Vision 3D so there could be some new Lucasfilm/Imagineering tech at work. There were only two things I can really mention that I found to be bumps in the road. First, the second time we rode the attraction a few seat belts were malfunctioning. That caused us to be reseated on the next flight out. This seemed to have happened to a few people as well, but I’m sure they will iron out that detail. The last thing Steve and I talked about was the fact there were several management level cast members wandering the corridors assisting the “flight attendance” and they were not dressed in the proper theme. They could have at least worn Jedi robes to cover their dress shirts and docker slacks. That really took away from the “show” that Disney strives so hard to keep “in character.” It was a minor distraction and I’m sure that will cease once the attraction has completed its shakedown.

Yep. It rocks! That’s my spoiler-free review of Star Tours 3D: The Adventure Continues. Did you think I was going to say that is sucked?

I look forward to riding this attraction as many times as I can before the sneak peek on Thursday. Either way I’ll try to report and stream what I can this week so stay tuned! For live streaming video from the parks please visit jedimouseketeer.blogspot.com.

Disney Confidential – Enchanted Tiki Room Under Old Management

Disney Confidential - Enchanted Tiki Room Under Old Management

Hey there ladies and gents your friendly gossip spreader columnist Anonymouse here. Today I want to discuss some very interesting news that is coming out of Walt Disney World.

Before you ask yes that title is correct. The newly burned refurbished Enchanted Tiki Room will soon be under Old Management. News broke on Sunday at the D23 event that the Enchanted Tiki Room will reopen this summer at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, minus the “new management” piece of the attraction. Everyone Cheer!!!

Disney reps stated that the ride will be restored to a version similar to the way it was when it first opened in 1971.

If you remember last year a fire erupted in the attic of the attraction, setting the sprinkler system off on guests who were sleeping watching the show. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the attic area, but the Enchanted Tiki Room has been closed ever since.

So what do you think about this? Were you one of those people who liked the New Management or are you a purist who preferred the Old Management?

Let me know in the comment box below.

That is all the time I have for today. See you kiddies next time.

Got any good rumors?  Please email me at [email protected] on my Facebook Page.

Airline Survival Kit for Toddler Travel

Planes…trains…automobiles. Whatever your mode of transportation, traveling with a two-year old can be tough. Because of the miles we need to cover, a trip to Walt Disney World means flying.. I don’t think I would survive the 18+ hour trip with my five and two-year old and still have my sanity intact.

Airline Survival Kit for Toddler Travel

Flying with our toddler is not a frequent experience so I’m willing to purchase travel gear I otherwise wouldn’t with the hope of being prepared for every eventuality – I won’t know if it works until I try it. The marketing firms must see me coming a mile away. 🙂

Here are my thoughts on some of the travel I brought on our recent flight.

Umbrella Stroller. Must- have. Even though we rent a double stroller from Orlando Stroller Rentals, the umbrella is indispensable in the airport to safely get my little guy from curbside check-in, through the security line, and to the gate. It’s small and lightweight enough to easily fit through the x-ray machine at security and I can gate-check it.

Child’s Carry-On. Nice to have. My son didn’t carry or even wheel his luggage through the airport and we didn’t expect him to. We brought it because it was small enough to easily slide under his seat and it was a single “go-to” place for his toys and snacks.

CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System). So-so. We weren’t renting a car this trip so the idea of lugging an unwieldy car seat through the airport, installing it on the plane, and reversing the process to disembark was not very appealing. Something was needed to keep my son safe (and in his seat 🙂 ) though. The CARES restraint wasn’t cheap but since it’s approved by the FAA, I thought it was worth a try.

  • Pros – easy to install, light-weight, small enough for a carry-on, comfortable for my son (as much as a “restraint” can be to a squirmy two-year old)
  • Cons – No strap between his legs so he could (and did) wiggle and slide down, making the restraint less effective in my opinion; our restraint loosened during the flight to the point that I felt it was less secure at the end of the flight

Would I use it again? Yes, I would. It wasn’t ideal as we had to make sure our son was sitting up straight to get the desired effect but it was effective at keeping our small son in his seat during take-off, landing, and most of the flight. He’s on the lower end of the approved weight limit so I think that it will work better next trip after he grows a bit.

Portable DVD Player. Must have. We purchased the most inexpensive one we could find and it worked great. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Sesame Street kept him entertained for most of our flight home.

EarPlanes. Not sure. The box claims “Relieves Air Pressure Discomfort.” I honestly don’t think my son would have kept them in his ears throughout the whole flight so they never saw the light of day. I did purchase them, however, as “insurance.” If my son suffered from severe ear discomfort due to air pressure on the outgoing flight, I would have nothing to lose by trying them on the return flight.

Snack Trap and Disposable Sippy Cup. Nice to have. I love the Snack Trap. Fill it with a dry snack like Goldfish or Teddy Grahams and our son is a happy camper. With no mess. Our toddler is learning to drink from a cup and a water bottle but needs more help and supervision than he would drinking from a sippy cup. Given the tight quarters in the plane and the stress of air travel, it was easier to pour water in a disposable sippy cup for him than to make sure we didn’t have an unfortunate spill.

GoGo Squeez. Nice to have. I recently reviewed GoGo Squeez and became a buyer. No fuss, no muss with these healthy fruit snacks. Each package is also small enough to be allowed in carry-ons by airport security.

There you have it – the items that made traveling with our toddler a success. Do you recommend any products we should try for our next flight?

PhotoPass Perks and Pitfalls

PhotoPass Perks and Pitfalls

As you walk around the parks you’ve probably noticed cast members in safari type khaki vests and blue shorts; although they look like they’ve escaped from the Animal Kingdom, I assure you, they are where they belong. Who are these people and what are they doing roaming the streets of Mainstreet U.S.A.? They are PhotoPass Photographers.

For those of you not familiar with the purpose of PhotoPass, take a look at your family photos from your past vacations…you probably notice that one of the family members is always missing (someone has to take the picture!) Disney’s PhotoPass eliminates that missing family member and gives you family photos in front of your favorite Disney landmarks, with everyone included, you can even have them “magically” enhanced.

There are many opinions on the value of PhotoPass and of course there are perks and pitfalls to the PhotoPass service. The perks:

Everyone wants that perfect family photo in front of your favorite Disney landmark, a PhotoPass photographer may be your best bet at getting that to happen.

PhotoPass services are free, you don’t have to pay a photographer to take your photo, they will even take one with your personal camera as well.

You can get more than a basic print when you choose the PhotoPass option. You can choose to have your photo “magically” enhanced with some fun Disney characters and special effects. In addition to enhanced photos you can turn your pictures into luggage tags, magnets, coffee mugs and more!

You can view and share your photos with family and friends online through the Disney PhotoPass website. You will have access to your photos for 30 days.

When you purchase the PhotoPass CD you get access to “the gallery” which has professional prints of each park, fireworks, characters and attractions from which you can purchase prints.

There are also PhotoPass portrait sessions available, visit a PhotoPass kiosk at your Disney resort for pricing and availability.

Those are just a few of the perks that PhotoPass has to offer; now let’s take a look at their corresponding pitfalls.

The Pitfalls:
Your dream photo could take a healthy chunk of change out of your budget. A single 5×7 print is $12.95, an 8×10 is $16.95.

You might end up loving the PhotoPass photo (and its options) and then you’ll incur the cost associated with purchasing the prints or package that you desire.

Yet again the cost of these memorable items might be outside of your budget.

You have to keep track of all of your PhotoPass cards, which each have a unique alpha numeric code. Each code must be entered online to access your photo (you will receive a PhotoPass card when your first picture is taken, try to use the same card for all of your photos, if you end up with multiple cards, go to a PhotoPass kiosk and ask them to consolidate your cards into one).

There are many things to love about PhotoPass, it’s convenient and creative and you can capture those magical moments with your entire family. For some folks the costs associated with bringing their dream photos home isn’t worth it, and some purchase multiple prints before even leaving the parks.

Tips for PhotoPass: If you know you are going to utilize the PhotoPass system, pre-purchase the CD online before your trip. The pre-purchase cost is $99.95 (regular cost $149.95), if you are unsure if the CD is a good value for you consider this: if you purchased (7) 5×7 prints, the CD would have paid for itself.

If you decide to use PhotoPass then USE it, A LOT. Look for all the locations of the PhotoPass photographers and take advantage of it, there is no limit to the number of photos you can have on your CD. If you have more than 300 photos, you’ll receive multiple CD’s but you won’t incur additional costs.

Remember that quality photography is not an absolute, so don’t trust that just because a PhotoPass photographer took your family photo it’s going to be perfect. Ask to view the photo on their camera and if you aren’t happy with it, take another. It might also be a good idea to have them take a photo with your camera as well, it doesn’t cost a penny and on occasion we’ve had our personal photos turn out better than the one’s taken on the PhotoPass camera.

The last tip, if you are attending a special event (Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party) look for the special event PhotoPass opportunities, you can even be photographed with the hitch-hinking ghosts from the Haunted Mansion! Guests at these special ticket events will also receive a special event PhotoPass card and a 40% off savings from any photo product ordered from that card, on that night. If you are interested in your prints, get to exposition hall plenty early before closing, it gets very crowded later in the night!

Whatever you decide about Disney’s PhotoPass service, we hope your trip is picture perfect! Now smile…and say MICKEY!
