Plenty of Delicious Dining Options Offer Something for Every Guest at Disneyland Resort

Plenty of Delicious Dining Options Offer Something for Every Guest at Disneyland Resort

From fast-casual fare to haute cuisine, the menu of dining options at Disneyland Resort offers something for every guest. Here, morning pancakes with Minnie Mouse are as celebrated as the spectacular creations at Napa Rose restaurant.

“We offer innovative cuisine from our award-winning chefs that match our guests’ desire for elegant dining,” said Michele Gendreau, director, Food & Beverage, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “But you can still find the Disneyland classics, from the Café Orleans Monte Cristo to Plaza Inn’s fried chicken.”

The rise in fine dining at Disneyland Resort is often an unexpected delight. At the hotels, top award winners are Napa Rose at Disney’s Grand California Hotel & Spa and Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel. A stellar wine program has elevated the quality of dining service throughout the Resort, with trained sommeliers in restaurants including Napa Rose and Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel.

Healthful Initiatives
Even though vacation may be a time for indulgence, Disneyland chefs provide healthful options, with every table-service and quick-service restaurant offering at least one vegetarian option.

For lifestyle dining options, or for requests from guests with food allergies or intolerances, there are a wide range of choices, from kosher to gluten and sugar free. In 2009, Disney tracked nearly a quarter of a million requests for special dietary needs and allergies. “We have a real commitment to innovative, healthy menus,” said Mahmud Dhanani, vice president of Food & Beverage Concept Development.

A new culinary dietary specialist recently joined the team to focus on vitality lifestyle ideas. Revised menus require that no more than 35 percent of calories can come from fat – saturated fat and sugar must account for no more than 10 percent of the meal’s calories. And chefs keep tinkering with recipes, such as smoothies, now made with non-fat yogurt and fresh fruit purees (now 120 calories and the former recipe was 420 calories).

Kids’ menus, too, are evolving, and changes make healthier choices the standard instead of the “alternate.” Grapes, apples, carrot sticks and unsweetened applesauce in place of French fries and 1 percent milk or bottled water instead of soda, for instance. Guests must request fries and sodas (at no additional cost).

Theme Park Eats
Theme park guests looking for food on the run will find beautiful fresh fruit carts in both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks. Favorite quick bites in Disneyland include cheddar cheese and broccoli soup and grilled salmon salad from the Harbour Galley in New Orleans Square; sandwiches and sweets from Jolly Holiday Bakery (opening in 2012) on Main Street, U.S.A.; easy-to-eat skewer snacks at Bengal Barbecue and the legendary Dole Whip at the Tiki Juice Bar in Adventureland; Mickey-shaped beignets and funnel cake from the Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square; hot pizza from Red Rockett’s Pizza Port and grilled vegetable sandwiches from Tomorrowland Terrace in Tomorrowland.

For a relaxing meal, spots such as Carnation Cafe on Main Street, U.S.A., serve generous salads and the legendary loaded baked potato soup. Settle in for barbecued ribs and chicken at Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue in Frontierland (barbecued tofu and veggie skewers available upon request).

Enchanting Blue Bayou in New Orleans Square, one of the most-requested reservations, offers diners specialties such as gumbo, jambalaya and filet mignon. Casual, family-friendly eats are on the menu at Plaza Inn on Main Street, U.S.A., and River Belle Terrace in New Orleans Square, where Walt Disney himself enjoyed breakfast on Sundays. For authentic Mexican, Rancho del Zocalo in Frontierland dishes up taco and burrito platters. Out-of-the-way Hungry Bear, nestled in the shady trees in Critter Country, is a favorite for Disney fans who recommend the burgers and the view on the riverfront.

At Disney California Adventure, guests can grab a sandwich or sweets at Pacific Wharf Cafe. Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill offers tacos with steak, pork, grilled chicken or fish. Hearty Asian creations are served at Lucky Fortune Cookery, with beef, chicken or tofu with vegetables, rice and your choice of four sauces.Other restaurants along Paradise Pier offer retro favorites from corn dogs to cheesy pizza.

To wile away a lunch, dine al fresco at Wine Country Trattoria at the Golden Vine Winery, with a menu of pastas, grilled sandwiches and California wines by the glass. At dinner, the menu adds balsamic-braised short ribs, herb-roasted chicken breast and braised lamb shank.

The lively Ariel’s Disney Princess Celebration at Ariel’s Grotto is one of this park’s most-requested reservations, with Ariel, Snow White, Belle, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty greeting guests at every table.

Dining With Characters

For a leisurely way to enjoy a delicious meal and time with the Disney characters as they stop by each table for photos and autographs, make reservations for a Character Dining Experience. These include:

  • Disneyland: Plaza Inn on Main Street, U.S.A., daily Breakfast in the Park With Minnie and Friends; My Disneyland Birthday Party with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in the afternoons.
  • At Disney California Adventure: Ariel’s Disney Princess Celebration at Ariel’s Grotto, with Snow White, Belle, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella at breakfast and lunch.
  • At the hotels: Chip ‘n Dale Critter Breakfast at Storytellers Cafe offers a delicious breakfast buffet, while Goofy and his pals entertain at Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel for daily brunch and dinner. At Paradise Pier, Mickey Mouse and friends entertain at the Surf’s Up! Breakfast With Mickey and Friends.

Priority Seating is recommended in advance by calling Disney Dining, 714-781-DINE (714-781-3463).

Downtown Disney District
Diverse flavors, from spicy pasta jambalaya and andouille-crusted mahi mahi at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen to Irish salmon and braised Angus short ribs at Catal Restaurant, there are myriad choices for any palate in the Downtown Disney District, conveniently located just outside the theme parks and near the hotels.

Hearty dishes (and 175 TV screens, including the ones in the restrooms) give ESPN Zone diners plenty of energy for the restaurant’s interactive Sports Arena. Nearby, House of Blues has diners digging in to baby back ribs and pan-seared voodoo shrimp. For California-inspired cuisine, take a seat at La Brea Bakery and try a grilled panini or homemade soup.

For Mexican, it’s Tortilla Jo’s handmade tortillas; for Italian, Naples Ristorante Pizzeria and adjacent Napolini for thin-crust pizzas, pastas, soups and sandwiches. Kids love the tropical storms, waterfalls, aquarium and live parrots at Rainforest Cafe, where guests will enjoy choosing from more than 50 varied items on the menu.

About Disneyland Resort: The Disneyland Resort features two spectacular theme parks – Disneyland (the original Disney theme park) and Disney California Adventure park – plus the Downtown Disney District comprised of unique dining, entertainment and shopping experiences.  The Resort’s three hotels are the luxurious, 948-room Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the magical 969-room Disneyland Hotel and the 481-room Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel with its “day-at-the-beach” fun.  For information on attractions and vacations at Disneyland Resort visit www.disneyland.com, call (866) 60-DISNEY or contact local travel agents.

Review: ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ Volumes 3 and 4

Review: 'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes' Volumes 3 and 4Review: 'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes' Volumes 3 and 4

Disney and Marvel have finally unleashed the final two volumes of the first season of ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’, and it was absolutely worth the wait. I jumped at the chance to review these latest two volumes of the Marvel produced Disney XD series, which is currently my favorite animated series on TV right now. The show is an adaption of the Marvel comics series, The Avengers, which follows the adventures of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk as they stand toe to toe with the world’s biggest enemies to protect the world. Hit the jump for my full review.

This is easily the best Marvel animated series since ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ from the mid 1990’s. Marvel and Disney have really taking their time to craft a truly great show for fans of the comics and new comers alike. These DVD’s contain the last thirteen episodes of season one, and they really saved the best for last in the second half of the season. In ‘Volume 3: Iron Man Unleashed’, the Avengers are finally faced with the Masters of Evil. But that’s not their biggest threat. My favorite arc in the series is the battle with Kang the Conqueror, who tries to go to war with the Avengers and over take them with a full blown alien invasion. It’s really a great story in the series, and it gives a chance for all the different characters to shine. Volume 3 also boasts a pretty cool special feature called ‘Avengers Unmasked: Masters of Evil’ which is an animated pop up feature that will play while you watch the episodes. It give you fun facts about the not only The Avengers and what you’re watching, but about the villains in the episodes as well. It’s a great way to get an information on you’re favorite characters that you may not have known before, and it’s definitely worth a look.

‘Volume 4: Thor’s Last Stand’ holds the last seven episodes of the series, which also features a great cliffhanger that you won’t see coming. These last seven episodes culminate in what had been building up over the entire stretch of the season. Loki has formed an army to overtake the earth and enslave humanity, so The Avengers must stand up against him and stop it form happening. But before they can do that, they must stop Ultron and his robot follows from destroying mankind. As with the last three volumes, Volume 4 also features another one of the pop up special features, this time called: ‘Avengers Unmasked: Hail Hydra!’. I really like these little pop up info tracks, because it really does give you some great tidbits of information on the characters that you may not know. Both seasons of the show are shown in their original widescreen aspect ratio, with a crisp and clear images that, I feel, are almost high-def quality. It also has a 5.1 surround sound mix, which will really work your sound system during the large scale battles the series features.

I have to say, ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’  season 1 really does have a great final episode, with a great twist you won’t see coming. As a fan of the comics, I was really excited to see them take that angle on the series, and I can’t wait to see where they go with it during season 2. I can’t recommend these two DVDs more, as well as the first two volumes of the series. It’s a great show for fans of the comics as well as new comers, and families are sure to love the further adventures of their favorite Marvel characters Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk. Volume 3 and 4 of both of these series are on sale at a retailer near you, so check them out if you get a chance! And if you’re a fan of the series, keep a lookout for season 2 to be starting soon on Disney XD.

Is Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort For You?

Is Disney's Coronado Springs Resort For You?

We recently completed an 11 day stay in Walt Disney World at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. The question asked above, is it for you, depends on what you are looking for in a resort, how much time you will actually spend at the resort, and what types of amenities you prefer. We stay at the Deluxe and Moderate level resorts because we do spend a bit of time enjoying the facilities and in most instances the Coronado Springs Resort, even though it is a Moderate, compares favorably to the Deluxe Resorts. There are some very distinct differences though.

Let’s look at the Pros and Cons of the Coronado Springs Resort (CSR):

PROS: –

  • The physical resort is absolutely beautiful and very comfortable.
  • Bus Service is excellent (CSR does not share buses with other resorts).
  • The rooms are in excellent condition because of a “fairly recent” remodel.
  • The Staff is a joy to deal with (with a minor exception to be dealt with below).
  • Contrary to some reviews we had seen, we found the food and service at the Maya Grill to be top notch.
  • Rix Cafe (grab & go) had a good variety of well prepared fresh items.
  • We are non drinkers but the bars appeared to be well operated.
  • The pools, both “main” and “quiet”, are immaculate  and quite lovely.
  • Although we did not use it, the fitness center looks to be clean and quite substantial.
  • Panchito‘s Gift Shop is well stocked and the Cast Members are very nice.

CONS: –

  • The resort is physically HUGE and if you have issues walking this could be an issue.
  • The Pepper Market (food court) is a bit unusual and at most times the food stations seemed just a bit understaffed. This led to some delays in getting food. The layout of the stations seemed a bit confusing and not well labeled. The Cast Members were working their hardest but were put in an awkward situation by being, in my opinion, understaffed. The Cast Members who work the service at the tables were excellent and very attentive (this floor service is different from most food courts) and work hard for the extra 10% added to your bill for their presence.
  • Bell Services is a bit weak. Let me emphasize, the issue is NOT with the Cast Members who handle the luggage but those at the Bell Services Desk. We had a room issue that necessitated us changing rooms (at CSR’s suggestion) and the approach that the Bell Services Desk took was inconvenient at best. When I got a manager involved, the issue was resolved as it always is at Disney but it shouldn’t have been necessary. When we left we had a very early departure time and there was only one Bell Services Cast Member on duty to pick up luggage so we had to schlep it ourselves. We were NOT the only ones with the early departure.

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort is a lovely resort with a beautiful and well maintained setting. It is , however, oriented towards convention type visitors so it seems a bit more “buttoned down” than most of the other Disney resorts. People just didn’t seem as relaxed as they do at other Disney locations, perhaps because of the necessity of maintaining their corporate image while with their peers.

Will we stay there again, probably not. The reason is not so much with the quality or amenities offered by the resort but rather our preference for some of the others we have experienced and will experience in the future. So many resorts, so little time!!!  As always, enjoy your visit to Walt disney World!!

Can you rent lockers at Walt Disney World?

Can you rent lockers at Walt Disney World?

Often the question is asked, can you rent lockers at Walt Disney World?  The answer is yes!  Locker rental is an additional fee, but if my memory serves me correctly, the fee wasn’t a terrible expense.

Here are the locations where you can rent lockers:

  • Magic Kingdom has locker facilities available adjacent to the wheelchair and ECV rental location.
  • Epcot  has lockers in several locations.
  • Near the west side of Spaceship Earth
  • At the International Gateway (these are considered unattended lockers)
  • Oversized lockers are available at the Bus Information area.
  • Hollywood Studios has lockers available near Oscar’s Classic Car Souvenirs at the main entrance.
  • Animal Kingdom has lockers available both inside and outside the main entrance.
  • Typhoon Lagoon has lockers available adjacent to the main dressing room and also by Hammerhead Fred’s Dive Shop.
  • Blizzard Beach has lockers available at Snowless Joe’s.
  • Lastly, at Downtown Disney lockers are available at the dock near the Cap’n Jack’s Restaurant and at the marina rental window.

If you need a locker, I hope that these locations help you out!  I don’t think lockers are used all that much, but it’s good to have them available as an option, especially in the case where you might be leaving that day and have some time to enjoy before your flight leaves.  How often do you utilize the lockers at Walt Disney World?

Top 5 Disney World Quick Service Restaurants

Top 5 Disney World Quick Service Restaurants

When it comes to dining at Walt Disney World, there are a plethora of choices available to suit any taste and budget.  One of the restaurant types that you can get a wide variety of choices is the quick service restaurant.  Located all over the Walt Disney World resort, there are a ton of different options available for you to choose from.  In this piece, I’m going to outline my top 5 quick service restaurants!

1)  My favorite quick service restaurant is The Pinocchio Village Haus Restaurant.  In my view, this restaurant has it all:

  • A great location in Fantasyland, so it is accessible from many parts of the Magic Kingdom
  • A great observation point into the “it’s a small world” attraction, where you and your kids can wave to the people embarking on their journey!
  • Good food, such as Italian Meatball subs, pizzas, chicken tenders, and more.
  • A fun atmosphere where the Disney Magic shines through.

2) Next on my list of favorite Quick Service restaurants is Sunshine Seasons over at Epcot in The Land Pavilion.

  • Like the Village Haus, this is a great location; enjoy some awesome food while you are waiting for your Fast Pass for Soarin’!
  • The food at Sunshine Seasons is absolutely incredible.  What are you looking for? Sushi?  They’ve got it! Comfort food? They’ve got that too!  In fact, they have a ton of different options available that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters!
  • A great environment; if you want to people watch, then this is one of the places to do it at.  Don’t like the special affects of Soarin’? That’s okay, grab something to eat here and enjoy being in the moment!

3) One of my favorite quick service restaurants at Animal Kingdom is Flametree Barbeque!

  • Located in Discovery Island, the same section as the Tree of Life
  • Absolutely hands down — some of the best food you will find on property!  I love the ribs and chicken you can get there, and the prices are reasonable to me!
  • Whenever I eat there, it always seems to have fast service.
  • I really enjoy the outdoor seating, but watch out — the birds like to beg for food!

4) Back at the Magic Kingdom, my next favorite quick service restaurant is Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe!

  • Located in Tomorrowland, Cosmic Ray’s is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat, and has a huge seating layout.
  • Chicken, Burgers, or Sandwiches, what’s your pleasure?  Cosmic Ray’s serves all of these, and has kids menus also!
  • Sophie enjoys catching a show of Sonny Eclipse rockin’ the tunes!
  • For a lot of variety that will suit most everyone, check out Cosmic Ray’s!

5) Lastly, next on my list for my favorite quick service dining restaurants is La Cantina De San Angel!

  • Located in the Mexico Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase, La Cantina De San Angel has been an Epcot fixture since 1982!
  • For a quick Mexican fix, this restaurant serves up some good food!  If there are no table service reservations available, don’t worry, you will enjoy this food!
  • Now located next door to La Hacienda de San Angel, the outdoor seating (which can be a problem during busy times) provides picturesque views of all the World Showcase!

I hope that you have enjoyed my top five quick service restaurants!  Just writing all of this out has made me hungry, so who wants to join me?  What are your favorite quick service restaurants?

Disney Confidential: Dueling Dumbo Opening in February?

Disney Confidential: Dueling Dumbo Opening in February?

Hey there guys and gals Anonymouse here.

The latest rumor flying around regarding the Fantasyland Expansion is that a small part of the Storybook Circus (on the site of the old–sniffle–Toon Town) will open up in February.  According to the official Disney website, the old Dumbo will close January 9, 2012 and open up again on February 17.   Now, here’s the part that’s confusing me, dear readers: Why would Disney refurbish a ride that’s going to be moved, supposedly later in the year, and then re-open it a month later? By anyone’s standards, that’s a long refurbishment, which means a lot more is going on than just yearly maintenance and a paint job.

More likely, we’re hearing that when Dumbo opens up again it will be just one side of the “double Dumbo” that’s set to open later in 2012.  I’m assuming this also means a refurbished bathroom in that area because you can’t send the kiddies all the way into Toon Town–er, Storybook Circus–without any sort of facilities, now can you?  No thoughts on any sort of gift shop being open as well, but you can bet there will be something, even if it’s just that small, open-air shop that used to be right across from Goofy’s Barnstormer.    A few credible rumors have been flying around that the train station will also open up at that time.  We’re hopeful that the old Barnstormer will open up as well, but that might just be wishful thinking as we’ve only heard whispers at this time.

Should be interesting to see how they handle all the construction and the half completed projects surrounding Dumbo if they don’t open the entire Storybook Circus come February, but expect to get your first glimpse of the new Dumbo then.

Anywho that is all the Disney Gossip I have right now.

Got any good rumors?  Please email me at [email protected] or on my Facebook Page
