‘Phineas and Ferb’ and Other Disney Channel Shows to Hold Panels at 2011 Comic-Con

“Phineas and Ferb” leads the charge for Disney Channel at Comic-Con International, as “Perry the Platy-bus On Tour” arrives on the show floor in celebration of the Emmy Award-winning series. After making its debut in Times Square on July 11, the Platy-bus will ride into San Diego Comic-Con JULY 21-24. This incredible, 4000-pound customized Airstream trailer comes complete with bill, tail and googly eyes inspired by Phineas and Ferb’s teal-colored pet platypus, Perry. The event marks a banner year ahead for the franchise, which is set for the fall debut of the Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM), “Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension.” The Platy-bus officially opens for a three-hour preview night on Wednesday, July 20.

Fans who visit the “Phineas and Ferb-Disney Channel/DisneyXD” booth will be able to play the upcoming video game inspired by the DCOM on the Wii or Nintendo DS family of handheld systems, the Unity3D online game, which will also be available on www.DisneyChannel.com/2D, “The Movie Game: The Dimension of Doooom!” and sing Perry-oke. In addition, Disney will offer premium giveaways and a collection of four Comic-Con exclusive “Phineas and Ferb” figurines and one mystery figure from Jakks Pacific for purchase.

The “Phineas and Ferb-Disney Channel/Disney XD” spectacular showcase spans 25×60 feet and will be located immediately opposite the main entrance on the convention floor.

The “Phineas and Ferb” panel is joined at Comic-Con by Disney Channel and Disney XD panels showcasing current hit animated series “Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil” and “Fish Hooks,” and will feature an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming animated slate for 2012 — “Tron: Uprising,” “Motor City” and “Gravity Falls.”

Disney Channel Panels at Comic-Con International 2011:

FRIDAY, JULY 22: “Phineas and Ferb” – Creators and executive producers Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh join cast members Vincent Martella (“Phineas”), Ashley Tisdale (“Candace”), Dee Bradley Baker (“Perry”) and Olivia Olson (“Vanessa”).

SATURDAY, JULY 23: “Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil” – NBA star Dwight Howard makes a special guest appearance along with creator/executive producer Sandro Corsaro and cast. Additionally, fans will get a sneak peek of Disney XD’s future animated series, “Tron: Uprising” and “Motorcity.”

SUNDAY, JULY 24: “Fish Hooks” – Creator/executive producer Noah Z. Jones, executive producer Maxwell Atoms, director Bill Reiss and cast including “Dancing with the Stars” finalist Chelsea Kane (“Bea”), Atticus Shaffer (“Albert Glass”) and Justin Roiland (“Oscar”). Fans will also get a sneak peek of Disney Channel’s upcoming animated series “Gravity Falls.”

Autograph sessions with the cast and crew from “Phineas and Ferb” will occur throughout the weekend, and signings for “Kick Buttowski-Suburban Daredevil” and “Fish Hooks” will take place at the “Phineas and Ferb-Disney Channel/DisneyXD” booth preceding each of the respective panels.

A special sneak preview of the Disney Channel Original Movie sponsored by Time Warner Cable, “Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension,” will take place Saturday, July 23, with a Q&A with Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh following the screening. Additional details will be available soon.

In this animated Disney Channel Original Movie adventure based on the Emmy Award-winning comedy series “Phineas and Ferb,” stepbrothers Phineas and Ferb go on their biggest journey yet, into another dimension! When the boys finally discover that their beloved pet platypus Perry is in fact a secret agent who battles the forces of evil daily, they join him on a grand adventure that blasts them to another dimension, where a truly evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz has taken over an alternate Tri-state Area. When they uncover his ploy to travel back to their dimension to take over their Tri-state Area, the gang, as well as their alter-egos, must band together to stop him.

The teleplay was written by creators/executive producers Emmy Award-winner Dan Povenmire, Jeff “Swampy” Marsh and Jon Colton Barry. Povenmire and Robert Hughes direct. The voice cast features actor Vincent Martella (“Everybody Hates Chris”) as Phineas Flynn, Thomas Brodie-Sangster (“Nanny McPhee”) as Ferb Fletcher, Ashley Tisdale (“Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure”) as Candace Flynn, Mitchel Musso (“Pair of Kings”) as Jeremy, Caroline Rhea (“Sabrina, the Teenage Witch”) as mom Linda Flynn-Fletcher, Richard O’Brien (“The Rocky Horror Picture Show”) as dad Lawrence Fletcher, Dee Bradley Baker (“American Dad”) as Perry the Platypus, Alyson Stoner (“Camp Rock,” “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” ) as Isabella, Jeff “Swampy” Marsh as Major Monogram and Dan Povenmire as the nefarious Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Doris Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) guest stars as Mrs. Thompson, Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s senile neighbor. “Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension” is a production of Disney Television Animation. It carries a TV-G parental guideline.

Class action lawsuit against Disney is underway

Class action lawsuit against Disney is underway

On June 29, 2011, in the United States District Court Central District of California, Case No. CV 10-05810-DMG-FMO, Judge Dolly Gee certified a nationwide class of blind persons in a class action pending in Los Angeles. The blind plaintiffs in the case, represented by Andy Dogali of Forizs & Dogali, P.A. and Gene Feldman of Eugene Feldman, Attorney at Law do not seek money damages, but only seek an injunction requiring Disney to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act by making its theme parks and websites accessible to persons with visual impairments.

Judge Gee certified five distinct classes who make the following allegations against Walt Disney Parks & Resorts: 1) Disney does not provide schedules, menus and maps in formats which are accessible to blind persons, such as in Braille, large print, or electronic form; 2) Disney does not accommodate the needs of guide dogs; 3) Disney does not accommodate the needs of blind persons during live parades and shows; 4) Disney does not permit any discounted admission for sighted companions who must accompany and support blind persons in the theme parks; and 5) Disney’s websites do not accommodate blind persons who use screen reader programs to access information.

Blind persons routinely use screen reader programs when surfing the internet. As the blind visitor tabs through or drags a cursor over elements of a webpage, screen reader programs read the content aloud. The plaintiffs allege that Disney’s websites unlawfully include information which is visible to sighted users but not to screen reader programs, as well as options which are available to sighted persons but not to blind persons, such as the ability to renew passes, make reservations, and download electronic tickets.

The three plaintiffs who have taken up this fight against Disney and who are now certified to represent blind persons across America are all women. Two reside in Southern California, the other in Wichita, Kansas. They are represented by class counsel Andy Dogali of Tampa, Florida and Gene Feldman of Los Angeles. Mr. Feldman, who operates a boutique disability law practice, said the ruling represents “an important victory for blind persons who otherwise enjoy the Disney experience but who seek simple fairness and equal treatment under the ADA”. The case is now set for trial in January, 2012.

The 45-page certification order is available at . More information for Mr. Dogali is available at http://www.forizs-dogali.com, and for Mr. Feldman at http://www.californiadisabilitylawfirm.com. Mr. Dogali may be reached at (813) 289-0700 and Mr. Feldman at (310) 372-4636.

Nominations Now Open for the 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine

Nominations Now Open for the 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine

Disney’s Dreamers Academy
Celebrates its Fifth Year of Igniting Lives, Dreams and Passions

Plans are underway for the 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine. Parents, teachers, mentors and youth can nominate U.S. high school students ages 13-19 to attend this innovative outside-the-classroom educational and mentoring program. Nominations must be submitted on www.disneysdreamersacademy.com by October 31, 2011.

Entering the search for its milestone fifth “class,” Disney’s Dreamers Academy continues to hold true to its mission to inspire and fuel the dreams of teens, help them discover a world of possibilities and help them prepare for the future. Each year, 100 students – selected from thousands of applicants – experience notable personal and professional advancement. Students participate in hands-on, full-immersion workshops related to a bevy of career paths ranging from Animation to Zoology. Each participant learns important interview skills, communication techniques and networking strategies.

It all takes place in an unusual and magical setting: The Walt Disney World theme parks. Both on stage and behind the scenes, the parks become vibrant ‘classrooms’ leading to career discoveries, the pursuit of dreams and fun memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Motivational speakers and celebrities share their stories and provide insight on how to achieve success and “DREAM BIG.” Dreamers have the opportunity to cultivate relationships with other students from across the nation while they gain first-hand knowledge from Disney experts and world-renowned entrepreneurs and executives.

“Over the past four years, we have helped more than 400 Dreamers unlock their potential and get started on their journeys in life,” said Disney’s Dreamers Academy Executive Champion Tracey D. Powell. “The fifth Disney’s Dreamers Academy marks another year of continued motivation, education and success. Steve Harvey and Essence Communications share in our vision of enriching lives. Everyone leaves this program inspired to live their best life.”

Participants and a parent or guardian will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., where they will engage in life-changing sessions and indulge in all of Disney’s magical theme parks. The 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy will take place March 8-11, 2012.

Steve Harvey, syndicated radio personality, along with Essence Magazine and Walt Disney World Resort will host the selected Dreamers during their four-day power packed career and educational exploration. Harvey, speaking on the program, says, “Disney’s Dreamers Academy gives hope and inspiration and exposes youth to a world of possibilities. The fifth year of this program will prove to be the best yet. We are excited about another opportunity to transform lives and give students an inside look at what their future can hold.”

Launched in 2007 by Disney Parks, Disney’s Dreamers Academy has evolved into a year-round initiative with its informational Facebook and Twitter social media platforms, an interactive website, presence at community-outreach-partner events like the Essence Music Festival, the National Association of Black Journalists Convention, the Bud Billiken Parade, and the addition of the recently formed Disney’s Dreamers Academy Speakers Resource Group, which consists of various Dreamers Academy event speakers and presenters who serve as program ambassadors. This year, Dreamers also had the chance to win internships, allowing them the chance to test skills learned at Disney’s Dreamers Academy.

Essence Communications President Michelle Ebanks added, “We are excited about the fifth Disney’s Dreamers Academy. This program transcends the normal classroom setting, taking learning to the next level. This year we plan to go above and beyond to encourage Dreamers. Our valued partnership with Disney Parks and Steve Harvey serves as a firm commitment to the community and leaders of tomorrow.”

This fall, a distinguished panel of leaders from the communications, education and entertainment industries will judge all of the nomination submissions. Winners will be announced in early December.

Chip & Company Week in Review, July 4, 2011

Happy Independence Day, America! To all of our troops, a special thank you to each and every one of you for all of the sacrifice that you put yourselves and your families through, so that all of us can enjoy the freedoms we have. Thank you.  In today’s edition of the Chip & Company Week in Review, we are going to take a look at some of the news items that came up during the week. In addition to our news, though, our writers share their views on various Disney subjects, so we’ll take a look at some of those as well!

  • Did you read Chip’s post about the new Star Tours Intergalactic destinations on Disney.com? If not, check it out!
  • Our writer Michele shares a passion of mine. She loves looking at vintage photos of the way the parks used to be. Check out her post with some vintage photos of the Contemporary Resort!
  • An important thing to remember about Disney World during the summer is the heat and humidity. Chip brings us his special post on surviving the summer heat.
  • Did you hear about the new Pirate Adventure coming to Disney World? If not, check it out here.
  • ABC Family is often bringing us unique shows and movies. For those of us that are parents, like myself, there is a special movie coming out on July 17th called “Cyberbully”. This is an important topic, and you might want to check it out.
  • Disney is releasing “Muppets: The Green Album” on August 23rd. Check it out here and find out the tracks that are going to be part of the “album”!
  • Congratulations to Mary Renner Beech, the new vice president and general manager in charge of Toys and Social Expressions for Disney Consumer Products.
  • There is a new Disney Comics app for the iPad, with over 80 years of Disney comics. Sounds really cool, check it out here!
  • Check out the new Adventureland Suite at the Disneyland Hotel! To quote Dude Crush, “Sweeeeeettttttttt!”
  • If you are at Disneyland today, make sure you check out the special Independence Day shows, and let us know how they are!

But remember, Chip & Company isn’t just news, we’ve also got great writers who share their views on things around the Parks. Here is just a sampling of what we have to offer!

  • One of our new writers, Wendy, talks to us about her thoughts on how to choose your Walt Disney World resort.
  • Do you have a passion for Disney and writing? If so, then maybe you should consider becoming a guest writer for Chip & Company?
  • Savannah, like most of us, is a huge fan of staying on Disney property when she visits. Take a look at her top 5 Disney World resorts. Do they match up with your favorites?
  • Lastly, my friend Ken is back writing with us, and he brought us his top 5 attractions for seniors at Animal Kingdom. I don’t agree with number 5 on his list, but that’s just me! Welcome back, Ken!

I hope you all had a terrific July 4th, and that you have a great week ahead.  Stay tuned to Chip & Company throughout the week for more news and views stories!  Also, don’t forget to check us out on Facebook and Twitter!  For Facebook, if we can get up to 5000 followers bu July 31st , Chip is going to give away a $100 gift card!  Good luck, and suggest us to all of your friends!

Disney Channel and Disney XD salute summer with two nights of premieres dedicated to soaring temperatures and fun in the sun. On Sunday, JuLY 24 (7:30 – 9:00 p.m., ET/PT), Disney Channel heads to the shores for a special “Sizzlin’ Summer Sunday” with new beach-themed episodes of “Wizards of Waverly Place,” “Shake It Up” and “Good Luck Charlie.” On Monday, JuLY 25 (7:30 – 9:30 p.m., ET/PT), a heat wave hits Disney XD for a “Sizzlin’ Summer Monday” featuring new episodes of “Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil,” “Pair of Kings,” “Kickin’ It” and “Zeke and Luther.”

On Sunday, July 3 (7:15 p.m., ET/PT.), Disney XD will premiere the music video for its summer anthem, ”We Burnin’ Up,” co-written by Adam Hicks (“Zeke and Luther,” “Lemonade Mouth”) and performed by Hicks and Chris Brochu (“Lemonade Mouth”). The music video was directed by James Larese of Syndrome, whose credits include music videos for Alicia Keys and Ke$ha.

Beginning Tuesday, July 12, fans can escape the heat with DisneyXD.com‘s first multi-series online game, “Summer Balloon Battle Royale.” Players compete as popular XD personas Perry (“Phineas and Ferb”), Kick (“Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil,”), Jack (“Kickin’ It”), Brady (“Pair of Kings”) or Zeke (“Zeke and Luther”) to try and pop all the opponents’ balloons and remain the last one standing. Players must pass all five different levels relating to the hit series — Agent P’s Lair, Mellowbrook Park, Bobbi Wasabi Dojo, Island Paradise and Riot Skate Park.

Check out the full schedule below:

Sunday, July 24 (All times ET/PT)

Disney Channel:

7:30 p.m. — “Wizards of Waverly Place”

“Misfortune at the Beach” — Alex, Justin and Max ignore their father’s warning and decide to get their fortunes from a machine on the beach, even though the fortunes actually come true for Wizards. The trio is shocked when Alex’s fortune tells her to say goodbye to her life. In order to reverse the misfortune, Zelzar the fortune teller convinces Alex to let him out to spend a day at the beach.

8:00 p.m. – “Shake It Up”

“Break It Up” – CeCe, Rocky, Flynn, Deuce and Ty head to Lake Whitehead for a week-long summer vacation. CeCe tries to get Rocky to enjoy her summer break, and during a game of truth or dare, Rocky jumps into the lake and winds up in the hospital with an injured foot, leaving the gang wondering if she’ll ever be able to dance again. Meanwhile, Gunther and Tinka’s family coincidentally rent a house next door and try to help Flynn overcome his fear of the Lake Monster.

8:30 p.m. – “Good Luck Charlie”

“Sun Show, Part 1″ – In the first installment of a two-part new episode, it’s Bob and Amy’s 20th wedding anniversary, and to everyone’s surprise, the usually stingy Bob surprises the entire family with a trip to Hawaii. Unbeknownst to them, the trip is complimentary if Bob attends a day-long seminar as part of a time share presentation. Upon arrival, Teddy wants to get surfing lessons from the cute instructor Kai (Boo Boo Stewart), and PJ and Gabe go on a helicopter ride with a scarily unpredictable pilot. Meanwhile, Amy ignores the advice of a local and is cursed when she steps on forbidden sacred ground, as Bob keeps trying to dodge the seminar.

Directly following the premiere on-air, “Sun Show, Part 2,” the continuation of the two-part “Good Luck Charlie” episode, will become available on Disneychannel.com/Charlie.

Monday, July 25 (All times ET/PT)

DISNEY XD:

7:30 p.m. — “Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil”

“Pool Daze” – During a heat wave, Kick and his friends head to the Mellowbrook Community pool. But when lifeguards Shannon (Joanna Garcia) and Brad force Kick and his friends to stay in the kiddie pool, Kick leads his friends in a battle for freedom and fun.

8:00 p.m. — “Pair of Kings”

“An Ice Girl For Boomer” – During a heat wave, Brady and Boomer discover an ice cave in the jungle. With the soaring temperatures, Brady returns to the cave to cool off and discovers a beautiful cave girl who has thawed out, and decides to transform her into Boomer’s date for the upcoming Luau. But when Boomer’s ‘girlfriend,’ Awesome Dawson from Chicago, arrives in Kinkow for the Luau, Boomer and Brady must figure out how to get rid of his jealous cave date.

8:30 p.m. — “Kickin’ It”

“Wax On, Wax Off” – As a reward for winning the Bobby Wasabi Inter-Dojo Tournament, Bobby sends over a life-sized wax statue of himself. But when a heat wave hits the town, the gang must do everything they can to prevent the statue from melting. Meanwhile, Kim and Milton turn the mall courtyard into a beach and start charging for chairs and sunscreen.

9:00 p.m. — “Zeke and Luther”

“Ice Heist, Baby” – When a mega heat wave hits Gilroy, Zeke and Luther set off for a bag of ice for Luther’s Nana and come face-to-face with Gilroy’s ‘Godfather’ of ice, Mr. Montoya. Refusing to pay his inflated prices, the boys retaliate by stacking hundreds of air conditioners right in front of Montoya’s warehouse. But when the wall comes crashing down, so do Zeke and Luther’s dreams of cooling off Gilroy, and the bros must find another way to stop Mr. Montoya’s ice monopoly.

Disney Institute Announces New Healthcare Service Program as Hospitals Prepare for Public Reporting of Patient Scores

Disney Institute Announces New Healthcare Service Program as Hospitals Prepare for Public Reporting of Patient Scores

As a government deadline for public reporting of patient satisfaction scores draws near, Disney Institute announced today the addition of a professional development program created specifically for hospitals/healthcare organizations: Building a Culture of Healthcare Excellence.

The new program, which is available in a variety of formats, incorporates the five most powerful Disney philosophies – leadership excellence, people management, quality service, brand loyalty and creativity/innovation – to help healthcare administrators, physicians, nurses and other manager-level personnel consistently exceed the expectations of patients.

“Our program helps hospitals and healthcare organizations focus more on the overall patient experience, rather than just clinical outcomes,” says Disney Institute consultant Patrick Jordan, a former healthcare executive. “This is incredibly important for building a culture of excellence.”

The timing of the new Disney Institute program coincides with a new nationally standardized survey that captures patients’ perspectives of their hospital care – the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). HCAHPS allows consumers, for the first time, to compare hospitals based on measures of how effectively they are satisfying patients’ needs and expectations. The survey’s 27 questions look beyond clinical outcomes and technical capabilities of hospitals and focus instead on aspects of the care experience that are particularly meaningful to patients, including:

  • Communication with doctors and nurses
  • Responsiveness of hospital staff
  • Hospital environment (cleanliness, noise levels, etc.)

Starting this month, hospitals will be required to publicly report the results of these surveys, which will be published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on its Hospital Compare website (www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov).

But outside of the new requirement, Jordan says hospitals need to pay close attention to patient satisfaction simply to remain viable in today’s competitive marketplace.

“The overall experience is driving hospital volume today,” Jordan says. “It’s becoming increasingly important for patients to feel like their doctors and nurses are communicating with them, and that they are in a safe, comfortable environment while they heal. As a result some of the health plans are looking at this information to decide where to send their insured.”

Developed using Disney best practices as well as lessons learned from current healthcare clients, Disney Institute’s Building a Culture of Healthcare Excellence focuses on the entire patient experience, including interactions with hospital staff at all levels, and amenities that can help the patient feel more comfortable, such as private rooms and on-demand dining services. The program is also designed to help the leadership team embrace its own weaknesses.

“As with guests in Disney theme parks, the patient has to feel that he or she is getting the best possible service in all areas and at all levels, from the receptionist to the nurses and physicians,” says Jordan. “That starts with leadership.”

Scott Gordon, executive vice president of Arkansas Children’s Hospital, knows this firsthand. Gordon and his team began working with Disney Institute when the hospital’s patient satisfaction scores and employee satisfaction rates were lower than expected. After nearly 10 years and a variety of follow-up sessions with Disney Institute, including additional training for physicians and nurses, ACH was recently named one of FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For® the third year in a row.

Gordon says he and his leadership team learned that “it really starts with us. If we communicate effectively, listen to our staff and show them how we ‘walk the talk’ then they’ll want to do the same.

“We are now purposeful in treating our children, families, fellow team members and entire community with care, love and hope,” adds Gordon. “Now that we have a culture by design rather than a culture by default, we find that all of our efforts — fundraising, retention of team members, patient satisfaction and work with our physician partners — are more successful because we are more consistent and focused.”

Florida Hospital for Children has also seen patient satisfaction scores increase after their time with Disney Institute. After measuring patient and family satisfaction scores two years in a row, administrators were shocked to find their facility ranked in the bottom ten percent of hospitals nationwide.

FHC began embracing change through Disney Institute seminars, site visits and subsequent training sessions at the hospital. As a result, Press Ganey patient/family satisfaction scores jumped from the bottom 10 percent in the nation to the top 10 percent, employee morale soared, employee retention rates improved and the hospital’s pediatric emergency room is now ranked top in the nation.

“I’ve never seen a health facility turn it around so totally and quickly,” says Disney Institute consultant Chris Caracci, himself a former health care professional. “It’s largely due to the hospital’s leaders inspiring the entire staff.”
