Ask a Disney Question – Park Carry-ons

Ask a Disney Question - Park Carry-ons
Image from DisneyStore.com

This question comes from Katie R:

Hi Chip and Company,
I am visiting Disney World in August with 3 other adults. I have been wondering for some time whether I should take a backpack or a purse? I know what to put in it (sunscreen, bottled water, touring plans, camera, etc.) but I am wondering if there are any advantages to one over the other? I was thinking of carrying a small, cross- body purse and hooking my water bottle on to it with its carabiner that is on the lid. So basically, should I travel “light” with the purse, or a little “heavier” with the backpack? I still want to look somewhat cute while touring the parks!
Thanks!

Katie,

Thanks for reading Chip and Co. and thanks for your question!  Obviously, everyone would have a different opinion on this question.  Just from Chip and Company, we had writers that carrier both and others that prefer to take nothing at all.  In August, you’re wise to bring sunscreen and bottles of water – do remember that you can stop by counter service stations and get free cups of ice water, so you don’t have to lug the water bottle around.

Though back packs hold the most stuff, they tend to become uncomfortable touring the parks in the hot and sweaty months.  Plus, they can be difficult to fit in the storage compartments of some of the attractions.  I personally have a small “park” purse  that’s perfect and fits easily in the storage areas and holds everything I need.

If you’re comfortable with the cross carrying purses, those look to be a perfect size to fit in the storage bags and probably won’t be terribly uncomfortable to tour with.  Or, you can splurge at the park and find yourself a perfect “park” purse!   Not only are there the Dooney and Bourke, but many options of adorable mouse paraphernalia at great prices, too!  Have a wonderful trip and thanks for asking Chip and Co!

What To Do FIRST at WDW

What To Do FIRST at WDW

On our first trip to Walt Disney World, we wanted to do everything! So my wife and I booked 15 nights at Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort and we commenced visiting every attraction and show the Parks had to offer. We didn’t care what we did first because we were going to do it all!

But now that we are seasoned Guests, we tend to take things a little slower. A lot slower actually. We tend to look for the singular moments, the moments that we love to experience over and over again on each and every trip.

So let me share with you the first thing we do upon arrival and upon entering each and every Park:

ARRIVALS

Drive slowly. Yes, there’s nothing like seeing that big Walt Disney World sign as you approach in your vehicle! And being as you’re not supposed to stop to take pictures, driving slowly allows you to take a mental picture instead. The same thing applies when pulling into your Resort. Don’t rush things, just relax and soak it all in!

THE MAGIC KINGDOM

This is a no-brainer! We always board the Walt Disney World Railroad for a trip around the Magic Kingdom. This helps us to get in the Disney mood and see everything all at once. We always do the complete circuit, boarding and disembarking at the Main Street Station. No matter what you choose to do from there, you’re covered in Pixie Dust and flying high!

EPCOT

Well, it’s right there in front of you, so you can’t really miss it. And you shouldn’t! Spaceship Earth is one of Disney’s most magical icons and should be a part of any day at EPCOT. We ride it first for many reasons. It’s an awesome experience. It’s a long attraction, so gives the most bang for your waiting time. And the interactive elements, during and after the ride, are not to be missed. I think it gives a good all around preview of what you can expect from the rest of the attractions in EPCOT.

DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

We don’t run to an attraction in this Park. But instead we take a leisurely walk through the streets and shops of vintage Hollywood.
Almost always we run into some Streetmosphere characters and have a lot of fun. Some complain that DHS is short on thrill rides and attractions in comparison with the other Parks, but I think that was the point in its design. You are supposed to soak up the atmosphere, and that’s just what we do first!

DISNEY’S ANIMAL KINGDOM

Again we head to the icon of the Park. We walk straight to the Tree Of Life and dally in the queue area. It’s not for nothing that this is one of the longest queue lines in the Parks. You walk past and under the roots of this magnificent piece of art and architecture, and if you’re like me, you take hundreds of photographs! Have you spotted each and every creature yet? Probably not, so we go there first and try to find another one. And the It’s Tough To Be A Bug show at the end is a magical bonus!

Now, what do we do next? That varies each and every trip! But what do YOU do first?

The Best “Free” Extras At Walt Disney World

The Best "Free" Extras At Walt Disney World

There are lots of “extras” to be enjoyed at Walt Disney World. Some of them are hard ticket events requiring the purchase of a separate (and often expensive) ticket, some of them require that you attend a dinner show (also not cheap), but there are some that only require that you be in the park to enjoy them. These are, again in my opinion only, the three best “Free” extras available and they are so significant that many visitors plan their vacations to coincide with them.

  1. The Osborne Family Spectacle Of Dancing Lights We saw this one for the first time in 2009 and it simply took our breath away. The word spectacle simply doesn’t do it justice. Millions and millions (literally) of lights all synchronized to Christmas music put on a spectacular show culminating with a snowfall. The only way to truly appreciate it is to be there to see it for yourself but the next best way is to check out these videos. The whole thing started when the neighbors of Arkansas businessman Jennings Osborne became a bit irritated as his Christmas display grew and grew causing major traffic and other issues in his neighborhood. The folks at Disney, never the ones to pass up an opportunity, asked him if they could move the display to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the rest is history. This particular extra generally runs from about mid November through New Year’s Day.
  2. Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival – This one is huge and lots of folks visit in October and November just to be a part of this fun event. If you love good food with an international flair you might want to make plans to visit while it’s happening as we often do. There is so much going on you couldn’t hope to do it all but you can pick from lectures, seminars, samplings, or just strolling around the World Showcase sampling foods ($2-$7) from the 25+ booth located everywhere. The strolling and sampling is great for snackers and you can see some of the things available by clicking on this link. Don’t forget that there is also the Eat To The Beat Concert Series held nightly in the America Gardens Theater so you can enjoy some wonderful music while taking a break – by the way these concerts are FREE. Please be aware that many of the tastings, seminars, schools, etc. have fees attached and some of these fees are significant. But, if that’s the type of thing you enjoy the cost is worth it. The Food & Wine Festival happens in October and part of November each year.
  3. Epcot’s International Flower & Garden Festival – I must admit that we have never attended the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival and even this year we are visiting during the Food & Wine Festival. BUT – in the spring of 2013 we will definitely be going to see all the flowers and topiaries. It’s all about the flowers but there are also lots of other things to do. This year’s festival was deeply entwined with HGTV and there were a series of classes and lectures presented by that network’s stars but the real stars are the flowers and topiaries that dress up Epcot as far as the eye can see. In order to appreciate tha amazing transformation that Epcot undergoes each spring, take a look at this time lapse video. If you enjoy some of the older (perhaps “classic” is a better term) pop and rock music, do not miss the Flower Power Concert Series. This series also takes place in the America Gardens Theater and yes, it’s also FREE!! This festival generally runs in an April and part of May time frame  but watch out for Easter because room rates can be out of sight and the crowds huge at that time of year.

I highly recommend any of these events to you. I’ve found through the years that when Disney puts in as much effort as they do with these particular events that they don’t leave room for disappointment.

You may want to consider scheduling your next trip during one of these events and see just what Disney is capable of. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Rope Drop – What’s all the Fuss?

magic kingdom, rope drop

As a Florida resident, most of my trips until the past few years were day trips.  We would leave early in the morning and arrive around 10, not thinking much about the going-ons before we arrived.  We rarely did multi-day trips and didn’t think about arriving early, even then.

Until I “discovered” the Rope Drop Ceremonies.  Starting 10-15 minutes before the park opens, cast members come out in different shows, welcoming the day and opening the parks with typical Disney magic.

At the Magic Kingdom, I’ve seen both the Mayor and the Fire Chief host the show, leading the cast members into song, and welcoming the Train and the Family of the Day into the Main Street U.S.A. train station along with Mickey Mouse and many other characters.  I always love watching the show and then heading into the parks a few minute before the parks claim to open.  Yes, the parks open a few minutes before printed!

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you’re invited to participate in the filming of a commercial, or whatever the director and actors happen to be shooting in the morning.  Make sure to participate – the Citizens of Hollywood love to interact with guests!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom brings in the Mickey Mouse and friends to start the morning off with a big party, though for extra magic hours this past June, they didn’t actually have the show.  No word on if the show is no longer running!  EPCOT doesn’t have a big ceremony – sometimes music and characters, but nothing to set an alarm for, unless you’re hoping to beat the crowds to Soarin’!

Epcot where is your Rope Drop Ceremony???

If you’re headed to the parks, make sure to get there early to watch the Rope Drop Ceremonies.  If you’re like me, you’ll be happy you did!

Ask a Disney Question: Character Meet & Greets

Ask a Disney Question: Character Meet & Greets

We received a question from Joy about character meet and greets now that Mickey’s Toontown Fair is closed.

Joy writes “Where are the princesses doing meet and greets since they aren’t in ToonTown anymore? Are the fairies still do a meet and greet like ToonTown too if so where are they?

Well, Joy, I have some good news for you.  The Princesses are still doing meet and greets.  Their new location is at the Town Square Exposition Hall, in the same location that Mickey and Minnie have their meet and greet.  In addition to the Princesses, when I was at Disney a couple of weeks ago, over at Epcot I saw a location for the Fairies!  In Future World, not far from the walkway to the World Showcase, was the Pixie Hollow Gardens.  It is there that you can meet the Disney Fairies.  I would suggest that you take a look at a times guide for Epcot when you get there.

Thanks for writing us, Joy!  As always, if anyone has any Disney questions they want to ask, please feel free to reach out to us!

Disney Confidential – Disney Characters Get the Boot During EMH

Disney Confidential - Disney Characters Get the Boot During EMH

Hey there guys and gals! Anonymouse here!

I have some interesting Disney Character Gossip to share with you today!

Disney has announced that because of the popularity of the unique attractions in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland the Magic Kingdom will be adjusting their character offerings for Extra Magic Hours (EMH) over the next two weeks.

I hear characters will no longer be appearing in the Fantasyland courtyard for evening Extra Magic Hours at all.

Also starting July 10th Town Square Theater will remain open during regular park hours, but will not be available during morning or evening Extra Magic Hours.

So if your wanting to meet the Disney characters you will have to do it during regular park hours…Awesome Lame!

Mickey Mouse and the Disney Princesses have Disney’s FASTPASS available so guests can come back when they are really busy. Or like I have seen Chip write many of times. Do Character Meals so you can meet while you eat that way you can really pound out the rides and attractions while your in the parks.

I really love these new writers on Chip and Co from Character Central. They serve up the best in Disney Character News and Gossip every month and I really look forward to reading their articles.

Check out Disney Character News and Rumors for July 2011. You will get hooked like I am!

Anywho that is all the Disney Gossip I have right now.

Top 5 Places for Disney Pins

Top 5 Places for Disney Pins

If you have been to Disney World in the past ten years or so, you will know that Disney Pins are everywhere! Disney Pins feature characters, parks, attractions, restaurants, resorts, and much more so they make great souvenirs. Also, many of the pins are considered collectibles and trading with Cast Members and other collectors is serious business. Regardless of whether you’re just a fan of Disney pins or a avid collector, Disney pins make for a lot of fun at Disney World. So check out my Top 5 Places for Disney Pins at Walt Disney World!

1. Downtown Disney-At the Marketplace in Downtown Disney, you can find a huge covered pavilion selling nothing but Disney pins! This is the ultimate destination for Disney pins. In addition to the standard Disney pins you can find throughout the parks and resorts, you can find limited edition, special event, and resort pins, along with books and cases, and I have even seen a few Disney Cruise Line pins here. Also, just outside the pavilion, major pin traders often have their pins on display and some are willing to trade.

2. Frontierland Trading Post-In Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom, there’s a store called the Trading Post that sells mostly pins. Almost every wall of this shop displays all kinds of Disney pins making it easy to see the variety that’s for sale. This is also a great place to trade with Cast Members.

3. Sorcerer Mickey Hat-Underneath Hollywood Studios’ massive icon is an area where nothing but pins are for sale. This is a great spot because you get to see a large variety of pins at one location!

4. Special Events-Special Disney World events like Star Wars Weekends, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, the Grand Floridian’s Gingerbread House, Mickey’s not-so-scary Halloween party, the Osbourne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, and Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival, often have their special pins released only during the time of these events. Some events have pins that are relatively easy to find; but I noticed that at the Christmas events, Disney won’t sell them until right before it starts.

5. Epcot-I have found some different pins at Epcot that are hard to find anywhere else at Disney; and at World Showcase, the Cast Members who tucked back near the pavilions can have some great pins since not many people venture back there. You may also get to learn about their culture while you trade!

Are you a big fan of Disney pins and pin trading? What’s your favorite place to find Disney pins?

A Sweet Adventure at Disney California Adventure Park

There’s nothing ordinary about the treats offered at Disneyland Resort. This summer, join me for a “sweet adventure” as we explore Dulce Aventura now open in the Pacific Wharf area of Disney California Adventure park and the perfect place to add some zest to your sweet quotient.

Dulce Aventura at Disney California Adventure Park

Caramel apples are a definite must, especially the apple pie-inspired creation, which in my estimation is top notch. The combination of apple, caramel, white chocolate and crushed graham crackers elevates these everyday ingredients to new heights. Other delectable items range from cookies to brownies and even milk chocolate pretzels. But if you’re like me and you don’t mind a little pizazz, then I would definitely recommend the spicy peanut brittle or spicy peanut apple.

So remember, if you want to tempt your taste buds with sweets, be adventurous and stop by Dulce Aventura today.
