Disneyland Resort Donates California Zephyr to Western Pacific Railroad Museum

Disneyland Resort Donates California Zephyr to Western Pacific Railroad Museum

The Disneyland Resort donated the California Zephyr train previously located in Disney California Adventure park to Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, Calif. Plans for a gallery dedicated to sharing the legacy of the California Zephyr are underway.

The train and related artifacts, which were part of the entrance to the theme park, arrived at their new home August 6 and will become part of the museum’s Zephyr Project collection.

“Walt Disney’s love of trains made this donation perfectly fitting,” said Disneyland Resort President George A. Kalogridis. “The expansion of Disney California Adventure park provided the opportunity for us to make this meaningful donation and we are thrilled the train will offer museum visitors and train enthusiasts an immersive experience, much like it did here.”

Visitors to the museum will learn about the history of the famous 1950s passenger train through the donated artifacts, while the recreated locomotive will offer the chance to experience what it was like for engineers to guide the stainless steel Zephyr trains through California’s Feather River Canyon.

The cab once operated as a real locomotive. It is an authentic rendition of the Western Pacific Railroad – one of the three railroads that operated the California Zephyr between Chicago and San Francisco from 1949 to 1970. It wears the same number as the last locomotive to lead a westbound California Zephyr into Oakland, Calif. on March 20, 1970. The California Zephyr is one of the most celebrated “name trains” of the 1950s and 60s.

5 Things we LOVE About the Disney’s Beach Club Resort

5 Things we LOVE About the Disney's Beach Club Resort

Disney’s Beach Club is one of Walt Disney World’s deluxe resorts offering Disney guests a seaside experience in addition to their magical, park ventures. The Beach Club is considered an Epcot Resort and actually has a sister resort right next door known as the Yacht Club. The Beach Club is a beautiful resort; and like all deluxes, it offers a lot extras and benefits! Check out my Top 5 Best Things About Disney’s Beach Club!

1. Location-Disney’s Beach Club is conveniently located between Epcot and Hollywood Studios, which means a short trip to either one of these parks! In fact, there’s even a backdoor entrance/exit, known as the International Gateway, located in Epcot’s World Showcase for guests who want to walk or take a boat to this resort and the other Epcot resorts. The Beach Club is also within walking distance of other resorts, such as the Yacht Club, the Boardwalk , and the Swan and Dolphin.

2. Pool-The Beach Club is home to the best pool on Disney property, Stormalong Bay! This zero-entry, sand bottomed pool is absolutely massive and offers a lazy river and a slide made from a shipwreck’s fallen mast. Check out Stormalong Bay and some of WDW’s best pools here!

3. Design-What makes the Beach Club a great resort is that it appeals to a broad range of tastes. The Beach Club has a seaside theme that is both elegant and casual, ideal for single adults to families with young children. The pastel colors, use of light and space, and delicate trimmings are pleasing to the eye, but not so stuffy that rowdy youngsters and guests in Mouse Ears will feel out of place. The seaside theme also provides Disney guests with somewhat of a beach vacation along with their Disney vacation!

4. Activities-There’s so much to do at the Beach Club! You can enjoy the beach, the pool, have a sweet treat at Beaches and Cream Soda Shop, experience a beach-themed character breakfast at Cape May Cafe, or catch a movie under the stars on the beach at night. You can also explore the Swan and Dolphin, stroll the Boardwalk at night and enjoy its entertainment, rent a surrey bike, and so much more!

5. Transportation-Due to the Beach Club’s convenient location, there is a variety of transportation available to its guests. First of all, the Beach Club offers bus transportation to the other parks and destinations on Disney property. Secondly, the Beach Club has boat transportation that runs to Hollywood Studios, the Swan and Dolphin, the Boardwalk, and Epcot. Finally, if you don’t feel like taking a bus to the Magic Kingdom or to another deluxe resort, and you have a Park Hopper, just head into Epcot and hop aboard the monorail!

So what do you think is the best thing about Disney’s Beach Club? Is this resort one of your favorites? Let us know!

Top 5 Things For Seniors To Do At Downtown Disney

Top 5 Things For Seniors To Do At Downtown Disney

Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney area is a lovely place to get away from the theme park madness and just do a few things to relax. This is especially important to us Seniors as that constant go-go-go of the parks will wear anyone out particularly Oldies like us. There are a number of things to take advantage of that allow you to have new experiences but at a relaxing pace. These Top 5 items are in no particular order and the numbers are there just to show you I didn’t lose count!!!

  1. Cirque du Soleil – This is one of my true favorites. It’s a different type of circus performed on stage but there are no animals used in the show. It has everything including clowns, jugglers, acrobats, and dancers. It also has dramatic lighting effects combined with beautiful music. After the performance the word you will hear most as you exit will be WOW!! It’s ninety minutes you will never forget.
  2. Characters In Flight – I’ll start by saying that I have a fear of heights but I also crave new experiences hence my try at Characters In Flight. The attraction is a tethered balloon that will take you around 400 feet in the air for views of Walt Disney World that you can not get in any other way. The picture of the Cirque du Soleil building above was taken by me on our last visit. Give it a try, it’s currently around $18 for adults and yes it is perfectly safe.
  3. AMC 24 Theaters Complex – I wouldn’t normally recommend taking in a movie while at Walt Disney World but as of May of 2011 you can not only see the movie but have a casual meal including beer, wine, and your favorite cocktail. It’s kind of unique and a great way to relax. Sorry teens and tweens you either need to be 18 or accompanied by an adult to do this. Reserved seating is available.
  4. World Of Disney Store – The best word to use when describing this store is HUGE!!! They have everything you could possibly imagine in the way of Disney Stuff. If you saw it somewhere in the parks and forgot to buy it you can probably find it here. I’m not a huge fan of shopping but it makes my wife happy and it does relax me because I looooove to just wander around the store. Besides, we all know that is she is happy we are both happy!!!
  5. Dinner at Fulton’s Crab House – You can’t miss the paddle wheel steamboat that is Fulton’s Crab House. It’s a magnificent way to end a day at Downtown Disney with a relaxing and I might add fabulous meal. The seafood items are as fresh as can be in that they fly it in daily. Yes, it’s a bit pricey but after all at our age we deserve a little pampering. Give this one a try, you wll not be sorry.

Hopefully, you will giveDowntown Disney a chance. If you do I’m sure you will find that it is a pleasant diversion and will make time for it on your future visits. There is certainly plenty to do. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Ask a Disney Question: Best Parade Viewing Locations.

Ask a Disney Question: Best Parade Viewing Locations.

This question comes from Elliot, who asks “Where is the best place to see various parades at WDW?

Elliot, thanks for your question and for reading Chip and Co.

In general, you’ll have a good view of the parades all along the routes they travel, but there are some locations that are more advantageous than others. In general, crowds are going to be the heaviest closest to the exit for nighttime parades. Crowds also tend to bottleneck in areas that don’t have good flow (such as in front of dead end pathways) or that also get a lot of thru-traffic. If you’ll be taking a lot of photographs, think about what kind of background you’ll want in your pictures.

For example, a view looking toward the castle at the beginning of Main Street USA, just before you get to the hub, is desirable for pictures, but it’s also going to be more crowded. For busier areas, you’ll want to stake out your spot much earlier than you might otherwise.

In the Magic Kingdom, the parade route stretches from Frontierland, through Liberty Square, around the hub in front of the castle, and down Main Street. If you get there early, the second story of the train station in Town Square is an ideal location, but you’ll have to camp out at least an hour or two ahead of time. Your view will be different–from above rather than at street level–but you’ll likely be rewarded with a less obstructed view. You can also watch the parade from the outdoor dining area of Tony’s Town Square restaurant. We have some tips for making your dining reservations to maximize your chances for getting a table at this time.

Another less crowded location is outside of the Emporium, in front of the fire house, which gives you a great angle for watching the floats and also a quick escape if you happen to be leaving after the parade. Avoid the bottleneck near the exits and at the beginning of Main Street (outside of Casey’s Corner and the ice cream shop), where you’ll encounter traffic coming from three sides. Finally, I’ve had luck getting a spot in Liberty Square, just as you leave Frontierland. I’ve rarely seen it more than four to five people deep, often less. There are also some low walls near the buildings where you can stand and see over people in front of you. I’m sure it’s not encouraged, but I’ve never seen a cast member ask someone to move.

In Animal Kingdom, Mickey’s Jammin Jungle Parade starts at the Tusker House Gate at Harambe Village, then winds around Discovery Island and returns back to the Tusker House Gate. Best viewing areas are the bridge to Camp Minnie-Mickey and the bridge to Africa and the path between Africa and Asia. Given a choice, I’d pick the latter as it seems less crowded and is one of the prettier larger walkways in the park.

In Disney Hollywood Studios, the parades start next to Star Tours and wind down Hollywood Boulevard before exiting the park at Crossroads. You’ll find good viewing areas all along Hollywood Boulevard, although it will likely be the least crowded near Star Tours. We’ve also heard it’s less crowded in front of Indiana Jones. If you want to read further about the Pixar Pals Parade, check out this article on Studios Central, one of the best sites around for information on all things Hollywood Studios.

For all parades but especially the ones in the Magic Kingdom, claim your spot about an hour before the parade begins. During busier times of the year, you’ll see people doing this even earlier. If you’re not the type to wait (and frankly, I never have), it’s still possible to get an “okay” view of the parade even with a dozen or so people in front of you since the floats are rather tall.

Disney World Collectables – Press Penny Palooza!

Disney World Collectables - Press Penny Palooza!

Before our first Disney World trip, I prepared my step-son for the penny press machines. I thought he might like a penny here or there to put in the scrapbook. Little did I know this was the beginning of a penny pressing palooza.

Since then every walk in the park is a pre-meditated prowl for the penny press machines. Yes, it’s 51 cents to get a cent back…but it’s relatively inexpensive and he really enjoys it. I’d much rather have him collect those and have them forever than to invest $11 in a toy that lights up during the parade and/or fireworks and breaks before either is finished.

The penny press situation can quickly become trouble if you aren’t prepared. Cutting across oncoming traffic to run to a penny press, dig through the fanny pack, back pack, or camera bag for pennies and quarters is frustrating and time consuming. I’ve come up with simple solutions that will make your penny pressing palooza problem free.

1. Buy a roll ($.50) of NEW pennies from the bank. The penny you put in the machine is the one that gets pressed, the shinier the penny the better it will look when pressed. Start asking your bank in advance, new pennies aren’t always in circulation.

2. Start collecting quarters. Whether you want your kids to raid their piggy banks or you want to just purchase a roll, you’ll need 2 quarters for each penny you want to press.

3. Collection container-The best thing you could do as a penny presser is have a container of your pennies and quarters ready to go. Candy containers work great for this-especially containers from M&M mini’s. We take the label off and make our own decorative penny containers. Then you stack them in layers: 2 quarters, 1 penny; 2 quarters, 1 penny…repeat until it’s full. This way when you approach the penny machine all you have to do is pop the top and slightly tip the container until 2 quarters and a penny fall out. No muss, no fuss and you’re ready to press in no time!

4. Grab a press penny receptacle-a tiny ziploc bag from your local craft store works perfectly, or an empty change purse. This helps you keep all your pressed pennies together and you can put them in the pressed penny book at the end of the night. Carrying the book around all day is cumbersome, it gets very heavy. Not to mention the penny’s are hot after they are pressed and the sleeves in the book are plastic…so you end up with a steamy sticky mess trying to get them in there during the heat of the day. Drop them in a change purse and move on. Keep them all in one place so you don’t have miscellaneous pennies going into the washer and dryer later on.

5. Plan ahead and print the list. There’s no reason to drive yourself crazy and waste time running around the parks wondering where the next machine is or if it’s worth while. The Penny Press will tell you what’s where and this site is reliable and is updated often.

How about you do you collect the Pressed Pennies at Walt Disney World? Let me know in the comment box below.

Top 5 places in Disney World to get Character Autographs

Top 5 places in Disney World to get Character AutographsDisney Trip is just NOT a trip without a few celebrity autographs! Today I’ll tell you some of my favorite places to get Disney Autographs with shorter lines.

1. Chef Mickeys (Contemporary Resort) – The best place to get Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Pluto’s (also referred to as the “Fab 5”) autograph with no line, no waiting, is at Chef Mickeys. There is, quite honestly, not another place at WDW (except Tusker house which I don’t really care for honestly), to grab these famous John Hancocks and not come out irritated. You can also get them at the Autograph Trails at Animal Kingdom, but you’ll get a lot hotter waiting for them.

2. Akershus (Epcot) – Looove Princesses? Don’t want to blow TWO meal credits and have to pray like crazy just to get a table to see Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, Belle, Aurora as you can see at the Royal Table? Akershus is for you then. Do it for Breakfast though as the lunch and dinner are very, ummmm, nordic. And no where near as tasty as the very American breakfast.

3. Epcot World Showcase– Really Epcot is the best park to get autographs in my opinion, with Animal Kingdom a close second. In England you can see Mary Poppins and Alice. France you can catch Marie, (Aristocats), Princess Aurora, Belle & The Beast. Morocco gets you the BEST way to see Princess Jasmine and Aladdin. In Germany you can meet Snow White and “The Prince”(haha poor guy doesn’t even get a name) and occasionally you can catch Dopey. Mulan is in China.

Top 5 places in Disney World to get Character Autographs**Diva Bonus Tip** When cast-members are learning to be characters sometimes you can catch them “practicing” at Epcot. Some of the best characters (and rarest) we’ve been able to interact with are on a little walkway between America and Italy and at the International Gateway (we’ve even met MEG from Hercules at the International Gateway. Most of the rare ones we’ve found are right there!). Make friends with a characters “handler” while you wait and ask them if they know of any rare character appearances on the schedule that day and when they might be there. Those people always have the scoop so be ultra, mega, nice to them!!!

4. Animal Kingdom – Greeting Trails – Wanna get Chip and Dales’s autograph and not wait for a bazillion years? The Greeting Trails is the place to go. You can also get Mickey, Minnnie, Goofy and Donald on these trails, but I suggest you wait to do it until the Lion King show is going on since the lines seem to be shorter then.

5. Halloween or Christmas Parties – A great way to get some face time with really rare characters is at the Halloween Party. As far as I know it’s the only place you can get your photo with all 7 Dwarves, Queen of Hearts, Tarzan, and more! The Halloween party is also the only place you can get your photo standing right in front of Cinderella’s carriage. I think some of her mice friends are there too. The parties are some of my faaavorite places to see/meet characters. The Best Mad Hatter I ever met was at the Halloween party.

Remember, the best way to find out who is in the park is to be nice to a character “handler” and ask them who is expected to be in the park and what time they should be there.

Also, consider collecting autographs in different ways, like making your own autograph book OR buying a large photo-matte for the characters to sign.

Disney Character News and Rumors for August 2011

Disney Character News and Rumors for August 2011

It has been a pretty quiet month for character news on Character Central but I am sure as we move into the fall and get closer to Halloween (Mickey’s No So Scary Halloween Party) and Christmas (Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party) we will be hearing more!

Walt Disney World

  • Tink and her fairy friends have moved to their new home in the Adventureland Veranda which is now named Tinker Bell’s Magical Nook. Currently two fairies at a time are meeting and it normally consists of Tink + either Vidia or Rosetta. Hopefully the other fairies will make occasional appearances as well.
  • The Magic Kingdom day parade is occurring twice a day during the summer. Due to this some of the regular Magic Kingdom characters may be in slightly different locations. This includes Goofy appearing near Pirates and Peter Pan sometimes making appearances near the entrance to Adventureland.
  • On a sad note, WDW has decided to stop having characters appear during EMH… hopefully they will return some day
  • Onto rumors, we are continuing to hear rumors about changes to MNSSHP. As of now it sounds like at least Gaston and Lotso will be joining the list of villains you can meet at the parties. We also know that there will be some changes to the popular Boo to You parade but don’t know all the specifics yet.
  • Last month we reported the Flynn and Naveen had stopped making regular appearances in the parks. We have heard that they should return for MNSSHP and/or MVMCP… so if you missed them you should still have a chance to meet them if you go to the parties.

Disneyland

  • Phineas and Ferb started making appearances in the form of a show called Phineas and Ferb’s Rockin’ Rollin’ Dance Party. Unfortunately they are not appearing for meet and greets but hopefully they will in the future!
  • Tickets are now on sale for the Disneyland Mickey’s Halloween Treat Parties. These parties are similar to but smaller in scale to WDW’s MNSSHP but feature extra characters not normally seen in Disneyland

Disneyland Paris

  • Darth Vader and Chewbacca are appearing in Discoveryland for the summer season
  • Also, recently (probably because of it being peak summer season) there have been more random characters appearing around the parks including the elusive Seven Dwarfs

Tokyo

  • The main change in Tokyo has been the premiere of changes to Dreamlights including new Aladdin, Tinker Bell and Toy Story units. They look spectacular!

That is all the character news for this month. Be sure to visit Disney Character Central for all the latest character news and rumors! Also this month on our site we have tons of new pictures from our most recent trip to Disneyland Paris and Disneyland where we saw tons of rare characters (many of which are new to the site) including the Robinsons and many of Stitch’s friends and cousins! We also just returned from our first trip to Hong Kong Disneyland and have started adding that resort to the site!

$1 Million Worth of Black Market Tickets Confiscated!

$1 Million Worth of Black Market Tickets Confiscated!

Buyer beware…when it comes to Disney World admission tickets “if it seems to good to be true…” IT IS! Especially in the case of “ticket brokers” along U.S. Highway 192.

The popular route running east to west through Kissimmee is filled with hotels and “discount ticket retailers” (*wink *wink, nudge nudge). During a recent sting operation 3,617 fraudulent tickets were confiscated (that’s over $1 million dollars in tickets!). The tickets were for Disney World, SeaWorld and Universal.

The tickets weren’t counterfeit reproductions, at one point they were legitimate for park entry; and were used by the original purchaser. Remaining portions of the leftover tickets were purchased by these “brokers” for pennies on the dollar, marked up, and re-sold to you with a discount price tag to lure you in.

Yes, this is illegal in the State of Florida and no, these thief’s weren’t hiding in the back corner of a dark alley. They were operating right on the main stretch of highway in plain view.

Here’s what you should know about theme park tickets:

1. You get what you pay for-Some of these tickets that were sold as 4-day passes actually only had 1-day remaining on them. There’s no way of checking the legitimacy of tickets from 3rd party brokers until you try to enter the park, at which time it’s too late.

2. Beyonce sings, “if you like it then you should’ve put a ring on it”, Disney sings, “If you bought it then you should’ve put your finger on it..” The fingerprint scanners at the gate are there for a reason. If the fingerprint of the person who originally purchased the ticket doesn’t match the next person trying to use it…you’re going to be getting a whole bunch of trouble in place of park admission.

3. If you drive to WDW and pass through this stretch in Kissimmee…keep on truckin’. While your desire to save money on your Disney vacation is pure, purchasing tickets from an illegal broker can lead to all sorts of trouble, and I assure you the experience won’t be magical.

4. Be smart-If you don’t purchase your theme park tickets direct from Disney, research the legitimacy of your source before you pay up. Sites like Undercover Tourist have been researched and reviewed whereas individual sellers on Craigslist or E-bay have not.

5. Track the discounts-everyone wants to save money on their vacation, if you don’t have the time or interest in tracking discounts and promotions, get a travel agent who specializes in Disney travel to do it for you. They can do all the work and you can have all the fun.

On Friday, Aug. 12, a new specialty store opened at Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort. Michelle Baumann, writing for the Disney Parks Blog, announced the opening of Apricot Lane Boutique, a specialty store designed to appeal to women with an eye toward fashion trends and celebrity style.

Apricot Lane Boutique is located in the former Orlando Harley Davidson store location at Pleasure Island; that store has relocated to Downtown Disney West Side.

Apricot Lane Boutique offers guests the opportunity to shop for contemporary fashion, including apparel, jewelry, handbags and other accessories – all with an eye toward current “must have” items and brands. Among the brands the store carries are Miss Me, Free People, Vintage Havana, Gentle Fawn, 7 for all Mankind, Chaser and Good Works Make a Difference.

“Many of the designer labels found in Apricot Lane are worn by celebrities and seen in the pages of current fashion magazines,” said Founder and CEO Ken Petersen. “We are excited to give the millions of guests visiting Walt Disney World Resort a place where they can replicate those looks.”

Apricot Lane, which launched in 2007, positions itself as a store where both mothers and daughters can shop, and can find current looks. It carries a limited number of each item at a store, a strategy to help customers create a more individualized style. Apricot Lane also focuses on affordable price points, with items in the $25, $50 and $100 range.

“We’re pleased to add Apricot Lane to our assortment of unique offerings at Downtown Disney,” said Keith Bradford, vice president of Downtown Disney. “This boutique is another example of our commitment to bring new and compelling experiences to life at Downtown Disney, and I’m confident that it will soon become a guest favorite.”

This is the second Apricot Lane to open at a Disney resort. In June, a store opened in Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort.

Apricot Lane Boutique is part of the popular Country Visions, Inc. franchise, and specializes in unique, one-of-a-kind items and brand names known for their quality and fashionable style trends. The specialty store has won a “Hot Concept” award from the International Council of Shopping Centers and has appeared in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Franchise List. The company doubled in size in 2010.

The Spa at the Grand Floridian to Close Temporarily.

The spa at the Grand Floridian will close on September 19th for 18-20 months during the construction of the new Disney Vacation Club property at that resort.  Guests interested in having a spa experiences on site will be bused to other spas.  No word on whether or not the Nikki Bryan Salon, which is under contract with Disney to run the spa, will be returning when it re-opens.

We still haven’t heard any official announcement from Disney on the new DVC property. Don’t hold your breath on that one. When Bay Lake Tower was being built, Disney didn’t announce the property until construction was well underway.  Meanwhile, the wedding pavilion has been given new stained glass windows on the side to hide the construction of the building “that cannot be named” and the horse-drawn carriage that takes brides to and from the pavilion will be re-routed to a more scenic route. I’ll be down there next week and I’ll try to get some pictures of the construction for the site. Meanwhile, if you take any or if you just visit the site, please keep us posted on what you see!
