Marvel Launching New ‘Toy Story’ Comic Series

Marvel and Disney announced today that they’ll be working together to publish the wildly popular ‘Toy Story’ series in a brand new comic series. With Marvel now part of Disney, this is a great way for Disney to continue telling stories from some of their favorite characters. Here’s hoping that this leads to a relaunch or continuation of the BOOM! Studios Disney Afternoon series featuring ‘Darkwing Duck’, ‘Ducktales’, and ‘Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers’. All the series just recently wrapped, ending with a crossover between ‘Darkwing Duck’ and ‘Ducktales’ in an arc called ‘Dangerous Currency’. I really like that Marvel and Disney will be working together now to bring us new stories featuring some of the characters. It really shows that Marvel and Disney are working very much in harmony together, and both parties are really benefiting from the merger. Can’t wait to see how the series turns out. Check out the full press release after the jump.

Marvel and Disney Publishing Launch All-New TOY STORY #1 Comic

Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and the rest of the gang lead readers to infinity and beyond as Marvel and Disney Publishing debut TOY STORY #1 (of 4). Featuring Toy Story characters from the Disney-Pixar films, Toy Story #1 delivers entirely new content and stories to comic fans.

“Everyone loves Toy Story, so we’re excited to team with our friends at Disney-Pixar to bring readers all new stories of our favorite characters from these blockbuster films,” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “TOY STORY allows us to bring great new material to the market that’s not only perfect for kids, but also a great read for fans of all ages. What’s next for Woody and Buzz in these stories? We can’t wait for you to find out!”

Andy’s new puppy, Buster, loves to play with toys — but if Woody, Buzz and the gang can’t control the playful pooch, all that chewing and shaking will leave them in a world of hurt! Will our heroes make it through in one piece with batteries intact? Find out this March in TOY STORY #1!

5 Things You Never Knew You Should Pack for your Disney Cruise

5 Things You Never Knew You Should Pack for your Disney Cruise

When the horn sounds for “all aboard” for your cruise, it goes without saying you’ll be worried about what you forgot to pack and how much it’s going to cost you to purchase it on board or in port.

After several Disney cruises I learned the top 5 things I never knew I should pack and always wish I had. Instead of you having to suffer and learn the hard way, like I did…I’m going to give you a few inside tips.

1. Over the door shoe organizer: I know this sounds ridiculous but there really is nothing you CAN’T do with a shoe organizer. I don’t mean anything fancy, it’s not some new fangled contraption…it’s the good old fashioned plastic thing that hangs on the back of a door and has slots for shoes. I wonder if the geniuses who invented the handy-dandy organizer knew how many things it would come in handy for! Staterooms are limited for space and if you don’t have a hanging toiletry bag, or are traveling with your family-this is a must. The ledge in the bathroom for your toiletries is practically non-existent. Not to mention if the ship rocks and something falls off the counter you’ll hit your bum against the door or the tub trying to bend over and get it and then smack your head on the counter on the way up (yeah…I’m speaking from experience). Hang the shoe organizer on the back of the bathroom door and put all those everyday toiletry essentials in them. There’s enough slots to hold everyone’s essentials!

2. An envelope for singles: Yes, your cruise is all inclusive and if for no other reason than that, you will undoubtedly order something from the room service menu. There’s something about having food delivered at midnight and not having to pay for it that really says “vacation”. You don’t have to pay for the food, but you should tip the cast member who gathered your order together in the galley and huffed it up the stairs on a tray in the middle of the night. Avoid the scramble for your wallet or the awkward realization you have no small bills and keep an envelope with singles by your stateroom door. You can put a magnet on the back and hang it on your stateroom door (adhesives are NOT allowed), or put it in your closet (command hooks are another handy must-have!).

3. Family information cards: You might eat with strangers, you might even like it. The truth is you are bound to find someone on the ship who you and your family connect with. You’ll want to keep in touch but you’ll be so busy settling your stateroom account and frantically trying to cram everything in your suitcase that you’ll forget to locate those people you can’t live without and exchange information. Avoid scrambling for pen and paper and make family business cards with your information on them. You can give as much, or as little information as you like to exchange and you’ll be ready to keep in touch without the hassle. Your local office supply store has pre-cut templates for business cards that you can print at home. If you want to get really fancy, take a look at cheap printing sites such as vistaprint.com for free business cards; but be mindful of the shipping time-you want to have them in time for your cruise!

4. Post It Notes & Highlighters: Post its are another handy thing for keeping up with those new-people-you-just-met-that-you-can’t-live-without. When the kids steal the wave phones and leave you stranded, your Post It Notes are a great way to leave a note on your neighbors stateroom door. They also come in handy for making notes on your Personal Navigator about things you don’t want to miss. This is also where the highlighters come in. A nice multi-pack of highlighters are perfect for your Personal Navigator. There is so much to do you can designate each family member a color and let them highlight their “must do” events.

5. Something smelly: Don’t ask questions, just pack something scented…trust me, you’ll thank me later. There is something about the toilet in your stateroom that just won’t smell right, it’s a funky, indescribable odor and there’s no getting around it. A hanging car air freshener, small can of aerosol spray or a small jar of room deodorizer will be just right to get rid of that smell and could amp up your “home away from home” experience with one of your scents from home.

There are a million more things I could tell you not to forget but I’m sure you already have those packed.

Thank you Janet for the YUMMIE photo!

*Here is a recipe I found online just in case anyone wants to bring a little Disney into your home*

Starring Rolls Butterfinger Cupcake recreation

1 box Devil’s Food Cake mix, plus ingredients to make cake
1 can fudge frosting
4 cups chocolate chips
6 Tbsp canola oil
3 (3.7 oz) King Size Butterfingers

Quick Butter cream Frosting
18 Tbsp butter, softened
6 Tbsp milk
1 Tbsp vanilla
6 3/4 cups powdered sugarPrepare cupcakes as stated on the box. Let cupcakes cool completely.

Using a sharp knife, cut a cone shape out on top of the cupcake. Make sure your cut goes about halfway into the cupcake. Remove the cake and fill the hole with fudge frosting. Add the cake you removed to the top of the cupcake, making sure that the pointy cone end is sticking up.

Prepare the butter cream frosting. Mix together all the ingredients and beat on medium for 3 minutes, until fluffy. Ice your cupcakes. It may be easiest to use a piping bag for this. Let the frosting set up for 30 minutes.

While the frosting is setting up, use a food processor to crush up Butterfingers. It may be easiest to use frozen Butterfingers.

Combine chocolate chips and oil in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Heat on HIGH for 1 minute. Stir and continue to heat at 30 second intervals until completely melted. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before using. Dip the frosted cupcakes into the chocolate – I used a spoon to hold the frosting into place to make sure it didn’t fall off the cupcake. Immediately coat the cupcake with the pulverized Butterfingers – just smash it all over the chocolate. Repeat until all cupcakes are dipped and covered. Refrigerate approximately 1 hour to allow the chocolate to set up.

D23 News & Updates for December 2011 and Beyond

D23 News & Updates for December 2011 and Beyond

D23 has just added a very special episode of “Armchair Archivist” to its website, and I wanted to share it with you – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wvR3VcKflM&feature=youtu.be.  I hope you, in turn, can share it with your readers!  It’s a first in-depth glimpse of what’s in store for D23 Members during D23’s three-day Smoke Tree Ranch Roundup event, which takes place Jan. 23 to Jan. 25 in Palm Springs.

The video will give you a great idea of where Walt Disney vacationed and re-charged his creative batteries.  The website also has a story on Disneyland Golden Horseshoe Revue alumnus Dana Daniels, who will present his award-winning comedy and magic act during the Smoke Tree Ranch Roundup, and regale guests with tales of working at the legendary Golden Horseshoe Saloon.  You’ll find that story at http://d23.disney.go.com/news/2011/12/d23-presents-the-smoke-tree-ranch-roundup/.

Both of these links illustrate just some of the fun in store for D23 Members and their guests who experience the first-of-its-kind Smoke Tree Ranch Roundup, created just for D23 Members.

For Disney film fans, it’s also worth noting that FREE tickets will be available on Monday (Dec. 19) for the first “From the Vaults” film series at the Walt Disney Studios – presenting the inimitable “Newsies” on the big screen.  (Tickets are free, but there is a $5 processing fee per ticket.) For those lucky folks who were in Pasadena in August 2009 for the special D23/ArcLight presentation of “Newsies,” you know it was an absolutely electrifying experience. We think it’s going to be an amazing time at the Studios for this presentation, too, especially with the “breaking news” that “Newsies” is coming soon to Broadway!

Oldies But Goodies – Becoming A Kid Again At Walt Disney World

Oldies But Goodies - Becoming A Kid Again At Walt Disney World

This Classic Oldies article goes out to our writer Ken who is home dealing with some major health issues. Get Well Soon Ken we miss you!

Oldies deserve to have as much fun as everyone else at Walt Disney World, maybe even a little more. The folks in my generation and older generations are a group of people who have spent their entire lives being mature and as we got older, more conservative and serious about their own behavior. Maybe it was Korea, Vietnam, and the Cold War that did it but just plain silly fun was not a part of our adult lives. I’m not saying that today’s adults aren’t serious and mature, it’s just that us Oldies have been that way for many more years (given our ages). It’s not that we didn’t enjoy doing the things that we love to do but we haven’t spent a lot of time doing just plain ‘goofy’ things (notice the appropriate picture).

Enter Walt Disney World into our lives!! We can go there and behave exactly like a ten year old; skipping and singing, smiling and laughing, and just plain being silly. We can do this without fear of criticism or absorbing any inappropriate comments because everybody else is doing the same thing. It doesn’t matter if you were a high powered executive or someone like me who just worked hard his whole life, people don’t know who you are and they are just happy to see you enjoying yourself. So – join me in having fun and feeling like a kid again!!

If you spot me at Walt Disney World, you will see an old guy with a big smile on his face, a sparkle in his eyes, and a song in his heart (most likely ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’) because I am in the place I enjoy the most . Hopefully, Walt Disney World has the same effect on you. If it doesn’t, just give it a chance and let go a little bit, the magic will happen.

It doesn’t matter if you are traveling alone, as a couple, or as part of a multi generational group do something you have always wanted to do. Have a snack that everyone has told you was not good for you ever since you were a kid but be aware of your own medical restrictions. Ride the Prince Charming Regal Carousel or take a drive on the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway with all the other kids (you can even drive). Sing while you watch Wishes or Illuminations and when you are watching a parade, make sure you wave to all of the characters.

Hopefully I’ve convinced you that whether you are fifty, sixty, seventy or more that you too can be ten years old again if you give Walt Disney World a chance. I know it works for me. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disney Donates Playgrounds To Encourage Creativity & Fun

Disney Donates Playgrounds To Encourage Creativity & Fun

Children at the Welbourne Avenue Nursery and Kindergarten in Winter Park have a brand new way to exercise their minds and show off their creativity, thanks to the new Imagination Playground they received from Walt Disney World Resort.

Part of the KaBOOM! organization’s Building Playgrounds initiative, Imagination Playgrounds encourage children’s creativity, character-building and enrichment opportunities. Youngsters learn to design their own course of play using giant foam-like, weather-resistant blocks that can fit together to create just about anything a child can imagine.

Once the new playground was unveiled, children quickly began assembling the various shapes and sizes of blocks into forts, skyscrapers and a maze of slides. Others pretended to make barbells and telephones.

“The kids are really enjoying this new piece of what I would call art,” said Maria Gibson, executive director of Welbourne Avenue Nursery and Kindergarten. “They are creating some awesome things: train tracks, tunnels, building, cars and everything else. They have been busy morning and evening with this new playground. It is awesome.”

Walt Disney World Resort is actively involved in supporting education and organizations that share the company’s commitment to building better futures for local children. In 2010, the company donated more than $28 million in cash and in-kind support to local nonprofit organizations such as A Gift For Music and Central Florida’s Second Harvest Food Bank, Boys & Girls Club and Coalition for the Homeless.

“The benefits of focusing on our children’s future is far-reaching,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations at Walt Disney World Resort. “Investing time and money in educational programs show great returns, including higher graduation and employment rates, reduced crime and less reliance on public assistance.”

The gift Walt Disney World made to the Welbourne Avenue Nursery and Kindergarten is one of many charitable activities underway at Walt Disney World Resort during the “Season of Sharing” that focuses on improving the lives of local children and their families during the holidays and beyond. During the last year, Walt Disney World also presented an Imagination Playground to the Winter Park Day Nursery, and the company gave a KaBOOM! playground and Imagination Playground to the Orlando Day Nursery.
