Morales and Mueller Win First at Inaugural Tower of Terror 10-Miler

More than 10,000 runners dropped in for scary good nighttime race themed around iconic haunted hotel

Juan Morales of Huntington Beach, Calif., bested more than 10,000 runners at the inaugural Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler race at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Saturday, checking in with a 58:00 finish.

Another Golden State runner, Kimberly Mueller of San Diego, was the first woman to cross the finish line. Mueller finished with a time of 1:04:50.

The frighteningly fun course steered runners through ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex before returning to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, past the set of the “Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show” and around Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat, finally finishing near the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction.

Finishers received a commemorative medal inspired by the iconic Tower of Terror, then celebrated with a triumphal Disney Villains Hollywood Bash post-race party with family and friends. Guests enjoyed live music and characters and had exclusive access to attractions such as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, Star Tours and Toy Story Mania.

Other weekend events included the Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run, runDisney Kids’ Races and a health and fitness expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The new Twilight Zone Tower of Terror race is a reincarnation of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K and the sixth signature runDisney event. This is runDisney’s second nighttime race, joining the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend, held Nov. 9-10, during the final weekend of Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival.

‘Dick Tracy’ Comes to Blu-ray December 11, 2012

'Dick Tracy' Comes to Blu-ray December 11, 2012

Now here’s a movie I’m really looking forward to getting on blu-ray! ‘Dick Tracy’, starring and directed by the always excellent Warren Beatty, is coming home for the first time on blu-ray December 11, 2012. ‘Dick Tracy’ is one of my all time favorite comic book adaptations, and one that has sadly seems to be long forgotten since its original release in 1990. But Disney is making fans very happy, myself included, by bringing this Academy Award winning gem home this December. If you’re a fan of great pulp fiction adventure films, this is one you’ll definitely want to check out. The film also stars Madonna, Al Pacino, Dick Van Dyke, Dustin Hoffman, and James Caan. I can’t wait to get my hands on this movie, and finally get a chance to watch it in high definition, and I’m very happy to see Disney going into their fault and bringing this one out to find new fans of all ages. Look out for this to be in stores on December 11, 2012.

Do they exisit? Dad Friendly Rides at Disney World

Do they exisit? Dad Friendly Rides at Disney World

I’m not sure if any of you moms out there have noticed, but sometimes the Dads walking around the Disney Parks aren’t that excited about going on It’s A Small World or Prince Charming’s Carousel.  Of course they go on them because their kids love it, but the excitement factor just isn’t there.  They may be longing to ride Space Mountain or Expedition Everest over and over again, but it may be hard to enjoy without the kiddos by your side.  But never fear Disney Dads!  There are some awesome, must-not-be-missed rides that you can enjoy with your little ones.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean:  There is nothing more manly than Pirates. Well maybe Ninjas but unfortunately if there are Ninjas at WDW we can’t see them. Pirates of the Caribbean is the ultimate Daddy ride. Here little ones can snuggle up to daddy since the entire ride is in the dark. On Pirates Dad’s will learn on of the manliest songs ever sung. Yo Ho Yo Ho a Pirates Life for me!

4. Toy Story Mania:  What Dad could turn down a chance to play a life-size video game?  This 4D interactive attraction combines good ole’ fashion gaming with some addictive midway fun.  Parents and kids alike will enjoy joining their favorite Toy Story characters on this fast pace, fun ride.  Will you be able to beat your child’s score?  Will you have the high score of the day?

Allergy Free Dining on Disney Cruise Line

Allergy Free Dining on Disney Cruise Line

Having a food allergy or intolerance is often considered a hindrance, an annoyance,  and can be discouraging when eating out and knowing that your meal options are very limited. On a Disney Cruise Ship, it’s practically considered a privilege to have a food allergy! Here’s how to go about achieving successful allergy-free dining with Disney Cruise Line.

Note the food allergy on your Reservation. When you book your Disney cruise, make sure it is noted on your reservation that you, or someone in your party, has a food allergy.

When you board the ship, visit the Dining staff. As soon as you board the Disney Cruise Ship, you can either find a head server in one of the main dining rooms to make your dinner order ahead of time, or you can simply wait until you are first seated for dinner to put in your order (keep in mind, if you choose the latter, your dinner may take more time to prepare as they will be checking all ingredients during that dinner hour.)

All Star Movies Resort vs Pop Century Resort

All Star Movies Resort vs Pop Century Resort

Earlier this year I took a mini vacation and stayed at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. Recently I toke another mini vacation and I stayed at All Star Movies. Both of these resorts are considered “Value” Resorts. Don’t let the title of  ” Value Resort” fool you, both of these hotels are very reasonably priced but they are very well-kept and clean and you get the same level of service that you would in any other standard room on Disney property.

Both of these resorts have a great theme to them and are very child friendly. Children and alot of adults will love the larger than life replicas of your favorite Disney movies at All Star Movies and you can travel thru time at Pop Century.  They also have different activites scheduled for everyday so if you want to take a day off from the parks you will still be able to find something to do. Something I thought was funny and a tad bit ironic, the other 2 All Star Resorts show movies at night by the pool but the All Star movies Resort does not.

Here are some of the good and bad from each resort:

'Frankenweenie: An Electrifying iBook' Now Available

If you’re looking forward to ‘Frankenweenie’, you may want to give this new iBook a look. Disney Publishing has released a new ibook, ‘Frakenweenie: An Electrifying iBook’ gives fans a chance to get an inside look at the making of the new stop motion Tim Burton film. I know, for myself personally, this is something I’m very excited to check out, because getting the chance to get an inside look inside Burton’s brain is always very interesting. The book will cover the history of the movie, including the 1984 short film that inspired the film, up until now. Are you excited to check out this new iBook to get a behind the scenes look at ‘Frakenweenie’? Let me know in the comments below, and hit the jump for the full press release.

Which is better? Disney Dining Plan vs. Paying Out Of Pocket

Which is better? Disney Dining Plan vs. Paying Out Of Pocket

The answer to that question is quite simple – a resounding and uncompromising IT DEPENDS! Your choice depends on a lot of factors and varies from family to family:

  • Do you eat a lot of sit down meals?
  • Are you “fast food”  comfortable? – There are a lot of  excellent Counter Service restaurants at Walt Disney World.
  • Do you like “fine dining”?
  • Are the kids burger and fries fans?
  • How flexible is your budget?
  • Do you like a cocktail or wine with your meals?

It seems like considering all of these questions would complicate things but it can actually help make the decision for you. There are many options you can choose from but there are also some things to be aware of. Disney considers anyone 10 years old or older to be an adult on the dining plans and everyone staying in your room, 3 years old and older, must be on the same dining plan. Here are options you can choose from along with links to Disney’s sites:

Flying Your Family to Disney Without Going Crazy! Part One: Planning Ahead

Flying Your Family to Disney Without Going Crazy! Part One: Planning Ahead

So you’ve decided that flying to Disney is the way to go.  I live in the Northeast, so our flight is short, but in my opinion necessary.  My parents were all about the road trip, but with two young boys, I’m all about getting there quickly.  So I’m going to share a few of my tips for a successful flying experience with the family. Disclaimer:  I make no guarantees here.  Flying these days can be rough.  But try a few of these ideas to ease the pain.

Planning Ahead

  • Picking Your Flight:  Pick a time that works for you.  If you are not morning people, don’t stress yourself out by trying to get a 6am flight.  Direct flights are not always financially feasible, but if it’s a matter of a small amount, definitely go that way!  Spend less on your souvenirs when you get to Disney. Obviously we are all traveling from different parts of the country, but we try to take a late morning flight which gets us in mid afternoon.  For many families, travelling during nap time works out well.  If your kid is easily distracted this is not a good plan.  Then you are left with a napless, cranky child.
  • Discounted Flights: Many times if you go to your home airport there will be smaller companies that fly out of there to Orlando. For example Chip has Frontier and  Allegiant air that fly out of  Greensboro with direct flights to Orlando. Tickets usually run $49 each way. Just check the individual airline website for details as many of these companies will not show up on Expedia or some of the other travel sites.
  • Bagging It:  We travel with a backpack with several pockets and use bags within the bag.  By that I mean using Ziploc bags, pencil cases, makeup bags, etc to compartmentalize your items.  Dollar Stores are a great place to find little bags.  Keep all like items together for easy access during the security check in and flight.
  • Travel Insurance:  If you are travelling during Hurricane Season or during the winter months, I strongly recommend this.  On the three trips I’ve purchased insurance, I’ve had to use it twice.  The company that works with Disney will handle all your flight rebooking and the cost.
  • Entertainment:  Purchase some small entertaining toys, books or games that will be new to your children.  Or put some of their favorites away for a while and reintroduce them.  It could be as simple as a Matchbox car!  Download apps,  movies or tv shows they haven’t seen before if you travel with a IPad or similar device.  Disney shows of course!   Coloring books with the “magical markers” are a big hit with this family.
  • Preparation:  If this is their first flight, talk with your children about the process.  Books are always great tools.  Especially inform them that they will walk through security on their own.   Practicing and play acting your flying scenario can be fun family time.
