5 Disney World Attractions to Experience after the Sun Goes Down

P1090209
P1090209

night

Walt Disney World at night is an experience in itself.  The lights, the sounds, Wishes in the background….it’s a whole new world when the sun goes down.  Families take things at a slower pace, drinking in the lights and sights while taking a spin on attractions they enjoyed during the day, or maybe had missed because of an afternoon break.  There’s something extremely magical about all the Disney parks after dark.  Magic Kingdom especially comes to mind-mainly because they’re typically open very late, you have the Main Street Electrical Parade, Wishes, and many attractions are elevated so you get good views of the park.  Today, I want to share with you 5 Attractions to Experience After the Sun Goes Down in the Disney parks.

  •  Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  This attractions is best enjoyed during Wishes.  Why?  Because the fireworks are exploding practically over your head, and when you round the corners, you never know what you will see in the sky!  The line is very short during Wishes, so you can even experience it over and over again.
  • Dumbo.  Get caught in Fantasyland during a night parade or Wishes, and you’re enjoying nighttime magic in the most magical place in the parks!  Plus, with Dumbo being a Disney classic, you’re sure to experience some goose bumps and pixie dust if you happen to board during Wishes.  Since Dumbo is elevated, you’ll get great views of Fantasyland all lit up at night.
  • Tower of Terror.  Tower of Terror drops and stops, right?  Have you ever noticed that on one of the drops, the door opens and you can see out over the park?  How cool!  This is an all time favorite night ride experience.  The darkness outside just adds to the magical spookiness inside!
  • Expedition Everest.  Expedition Everest is found at Animal Kingdom.  And while this park closes earlier than the rest, it’s still a fun attraction at night if you can get there during evening magic hours.  This attraction is much scarier at night, and the Yeti looks a lot different in the dark!  He seems so much scarier!  Not to mention the black lights and other lighting effects really add to the ride after dark.
  • Tomorrowland Transit Authority.  Yes, this is a slow moving, often boring attraction.  But, riding it at night is so fun!  You move slow enough that you can get some awesome pics at night of Tomorrowland, Cinderella’s Castle, and various other attractions at night.

Make sure to experience the nighttime magic to its fullest that you are choosing attractions that go high in the air.  Anything like Aladdin’s Carpets, the Astro Oribiter, or even the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse are great at night!  No matter what park you are in after dark, Disney sure provides the magic!  Even at EPCOT, the Spaceship Earth and all the walkways are so pretty!  Plus, don’t forget World Showcase and all the pavilions to experience at night.  Just because the sun has gone down, doesn’t mean your fun has to end.  In fact, it’s a fun way to tour the parks if you arrive later in the day and plan on staying well into the evening to enjoy those late extra magic hours.

I’m sure I didn’t get them all.  What are your favorite rides to experience at night?

My Disneyland Photo Pass Plus Experience

photopass-plus

Recently my family traveled to Disneyland and for the first time ever, we ventured there having pre-bought the Photo Pass Plus card. I was hesitant as I take a lot of my own pictures and to be fair I didn’t know if I’d get nearly enough pictures to make it worth the $70 price tag. Plus I wasn’t sure I wanted to be in the pictures so often. That may be why I take the role of photographer in our own trips. But I said, what the heck, let’s try it out.

My favorite part of the whole Photo Pass Plus Experience I had was when I got to go on Radiator Springs Racers a second time. I know you wonder what one has to do with the other? One of the added benefits of the Photo Pass Plus card is that all your ride pictures are stored on your card for you. Well when we finally had our turn to ride, we enjoyed the ride so much that we were that much more excited to have a keepsake photo. When we went to add it to our card, we were told that the photo had a “safety violation” in it. Having no idea what that meant, and knowing that the likelihood of getting back onto the ride was slim to none, we went to guest services where they gave us a special Fast Pass for all of us to ride again. Mission Accomplished, I was able to ride Radiator Springs Racers twice, one during the day and again at night, plus had a great photo keepsake.

Between the two parks, know that California Adventure has far more of the PhotoPass Photographers available to take shots. Whenever we showed our Photo Pass Plus Card, the photographers almost always went out of their way to get us not only a great number of pictures, but truly unique ones as well. We had one great photographer on Route 66 in Cars Land who must have taken close to 25 pictures of my family. Facing different directions and even a series of “action” shots with us pretending to be driving down Route 66, swerving and sliding around corners. The photo’s are hilarious to our own family, although not likely to anyone else, and we still laugh every time we see them.

In addition to Photo Pass Photographers and Ride Photos, you also have all your character meal pictures included in the purchase price. We received our Ariel’s Grotto pictures quickly and easily, and they actually threw in both a family picture as well as one of just my son with Princess Ariel.

The cost of the Disneyland Photo Pass Plus card is $69.95 when pre-purchased. ($149.95 for Walt Disney World version). The value you can get out of this card is up to you. We filled an entire CD with pictures and memories in 2 days at the parks. I can say from experience that when you show your card, you are definitely given extra attention and a few perks that you didn’t even know about.

I truly encourage you to learn more and to make the Photo Pass Plus Card a Disneyland Must. Visit Here to see more information.

Top 5 Reasons to Stay at a Disney Vacation Club Villa

P1100403
P1100403

wl

You may not know it, but you can stay at a Disney Vacation Club Villa even if you’re not a member! It’s true! Villas are connected to several of Disney World’s deluxe resorts and offer some extra benefits; but now you may be asking yourself, why should I choose to stay at one? Well, my Top 5 Reasons to Stay at a DVC Villa will answer just that!

1. Space-If you stay at a DVC villa, you are getting more space. There are several room types available, some offering more than one room for even more space! This is a great benefit if you have a large family, are traveling with older kids, or just want to live in luxury while at Disney!

2. Amenities-Every type of room at the villas, regardless of whether you are staying in a studio, one bedroom, or two bedroom, all rooms offer a microwave, wet bar, refridgerator, private porch or balcony. Most of the villa room types, except for the studios, offer a DVD player, whirlpool tub, washer and dryer, king size bed, and more! If you are interested in these extras for your stay at a DVC villa, make sure that your type of room offers what you are looking for and check with Disney when you make reservations to be sure. Also be aware of a downside at the villas, which is housekeeping doesn’t clean your room every day.

3. Cheaper-Sometimes some DVC Villas can actually run cheaper than standard Deluxe rooms! It’s like a Deluxe Resort discount with extras!

4. Laundry-One of the biggest pains at Disney is laundry. Most rooms at Disney World don’t have a washer and dryer so halfway during your trip, you have to fill your pockets full of change, haul your family’s laundry to the resort’s laundromat, and then wait and wait. Some guests pack enough clothes for the whole trip to avoid this; but with today’s baggage fees, that’s hard to do. It’s also difficult in the summertime where you will probably change more than once during the day because you will get hot and sweaty or soaked in a sudden downpour. If you are debating the packing/laundry issue, click here for some help.

5. New Experience-DVC villas are often housed in connecting but separate buildings at Disney resorts. They often offer different room decor and a homey like atmosphere. If you stay at Wilderness Lodge, you will get to see its own Vacation Club’s separate lobby that you may not have known was there! It has a small fireplace, relics, and even a game room decorated with old fashioned trains.

Do you prefer staying at the DVC villas? What’s is your favorite resort villa?

Girl Meets World makes it’s way to Disney Channel!

SABRINA CARPENTER, ROWAN BLANCHARD

Disney Channel has ordered “Girl Meets World,” a comedy series for kids and families from executive producer Michael Jacobs (“Boy Meets World”). Starring are 11-year-old Rowan Blanchard (“Spy Kids All the Time in World in 4D”) as the girl — Riley Matthews — 14-year-old Sabrina Carpenter (“Sofia the First” voice cast and a newly signed Hollywood Records recording artist) as her best friend Maya, and Danielle Fishel and Ben Savage reprising the “Cory and Topanga” roles they made famous in ABC’s hugely popular sitcom “Boy Meets World” (1993-2000).

The announcement was made today by Adam Bonnett, Executive Vice President, Original Programming, Disney Channels Worldwide. Production on the multi-camera series will begin this summer in Los Angeles for a scheduled 2014 premiere on Disney Channel.

Bonnett said, “Boy Meets World’ and its story of adolescent self discovery resonated with an entire generation of tweens. In the same way audiences fell in love with Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence, we look forward to introducing our viewers to their daughter Riley Matthews in ‘Girl Meets World’ and building a memorable connection with a whole new generation of fans.”

Set in New York City, the new comedy series will tell the wonderfully funny, heartfelt stories that “Boy Meets World” is renowned for — only this time from a tween girl’s perspective — as the curious and bright 7th grader Riley and her quick-witted friend Maya embark on an unforgettable middle school experience. But their plans for a carefree year will be adjusted slightly under the watchful eyes of Riley’s dad who’s also a faculty member (and their new History teacher) and Riley’s mom who owns a trendy afterschool hangout that specializes in pudding.

Jacobs said, “I am grateful to everyone at Disney Channel for the opportunity to reach my favorite audience, which has always been kids. ‘Girl Meets World’ is a new show for a new generation that will be rooted in the same kind of honest, comedic storytelling about coming of age and the importance of family and friendship that made ‘Boy Meets World’ so popular.”

The series was created by Michael Jacobs (“Boy Meets World,” “Dinosaurs,” “My Two Dads,” “Charles In Charge”) and April Kelly (“Boy Meets World”) and is executive-produced by Jacobs. “Girl Meets World” is from It’s A Laugh Productions, Inc. and carries a TV-G parental guideline.

Is everyone as excited as i am!!!

Disney Tips & Tricks – Pin Trading With the Kids

Pin Hanes Lanyard 1 +
Pin Hanes Lanyard 1 +

Pin-Hanes-Lanyard-1-+

Know what kids love?  Collecting.  That’s right – collecting.  It doesn’t matter if it’s bottlecaps, bracelets, go-gos, lego minifigures, magic markers, or video games.  They LOVE to collect.  Disney knows this – oh yes, they do.  So, lucky for you…Disney knows kids so well that they have come up with the coolest, most interactive, imaginative collecting ever.

In this week’s blog – let’s start with pins.  Have you seen everyone walking around the parks with those lanyard things around their necks?  Yes, they hold your Key to the World, but they also serve a much bigger, magnificent purpose – to hold the PINS!  There are whole kiosks and stores at each park devoted to these little gems, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Before you leave home:  Scour the internet, ebay, and Disney online for authentic Disney pins.  It doesn’t matter what they look like, your kids won’t have them for long.  DO NOT spend a lot of money on these pins.  Look for pins sold in a Lot on ebay, just make sure that they are authentic, you don’t want to be trading counterfeit pins.  The idea is to get ones that you don’t care about so that you can go on a treasure hunt for the ones that you DO want.  It’s no fun to just walk around a park with pins you love…you want the HUNT!  It’s all about stalking the pins and finding the wonderfully, elusive, favorite one!

Like I mentioned, the fun part about pins for the kids is the trading.  Yes, they trade them away.  Not forever, they get one in return!  Find a cast member in the park that is wearing a GREEN lanyard.  These are the employees that are allowed to only trade with kids (see, I told you, Disney has thought of everything – no stranger danger here!) – your kids will approach this person and ask: “May I please see your pins?”  This is a great opportunity for those shy, aloof kids to practice their budding social skills and manners.  The cast member will let you have a look at their loot, and then will trade with you two times.  Here is some history behind the phenomenon.

*Secret tip* – Some shops actually have BOOKS of pins for you to look through, and if you go to Guest Services you will find a PIN STROLLER that is loaded with pins for you to peruse.  Kids love to feel like they are in the know.  The pin strollers are not normally on display, you have to ask for them.  This makes kids feel like they have a secret and are in a very private club!  How cool is the parent that knows all of this ahead of time, hands out the pins as a surprise, and helps them in the hunt?  The coolest parents ever.  A word of caution – my kids forgot to go on the rides, they loved this so much.

Next time, let’s talk about pressed pennies!  Never heard of this?  I hadn’t either until we found a secret map – more to come!

Are you ready for free spending money?  Book your Disney World package with Cameron and receive a free credit on your Key to the World card up to $50.  Cameron Fisher is a Vacation Specialist  with Destinations in Florida, an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner.

Howard Berger of OZ The Great and Powerful interview

oz james franco

Recently i got to speak to Howard Berger the amazing artist behind all the prosthetic looks in Oz the Great and Powerful out on Blu-ray and DVD now.  He was such an amazing interview and a pleasure to speak too. From his favorite look in the movie to his love of Bert Lahr we talked about it all!

Q: What was the hardest part of keeping the prosthetics on?
A: To keep it on around the mouth it gets very twitchy.

Q: How long did all the transformations take?
A: We tried to keep them all under an hour and a half just for time purposes.

Q: Any problems with the prosthetics and the process while you were filming?
A: Yes actually Mila’s face didn’t take well to the glue we used so that was hard.

Q: How many prosthetics were used for the entire movie?
A: About 2700 altogether.

Q: Which was the most time consuming character to create?
A: The witch took the most time because it had to be just perfect.

Q: What was the atmosphere like on set?
A: great it was very family friendly. Everyone had their kids on set. I know that Michelle brought her daughter Matilda and it was just a really nice atmosphere.

Q: Which was your favorite character to work on?
A: Of course the witch was great but I also really liked the hag Evanora turns into at the end of the movie. Unfortunately Rachel didn’t get to wear the makeup we had a double in that scene but I did get to apply it on her in testing and it was perfect.

Q: How many witches did you go through before the finished product?
A: About 6 or 7 I would say.

Q:Are you familiar with the original stories about OZ?
A: Yes I am. I’m actually a huge fan so I fought tooth and nail to work on this project. I just had to have it.

Q: What was your favorite character from the classic movie?
A: I really loved the Cowardly Lion. Bert Lahr was brilliant and I loved his performance. I also loved the makeup they did for the lion I wish I had done it.

Q: Do you have any upcoming projects we can see?
A: Well I worked on Spider Man recently which was fun and I believe that comes out soon.

It was a pleasure to speak to him and i hope too again soon he truly is a talent!

Don’t forget to pick up OZ The Great and Powerful on Blu-ray and DVD now for more behind the scenes looks at Howard’s amazing work!
