My Top 10 Favorite Things at the Magic Kingdom’s New Fantasyland

Of all the lands at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Fantasyland has always been immensely popular and the most magical. Most of New Fantasyland opened to the public a few months ago while the rest is scheduled to open next year; and when it is completely finished, it will be the largest expansion in the history of the park!

I recently visited the Magic Kingdom and exploring the New Fantasyland was at the tip top of my list; and to me, it was better than the pictures and the closest thing to actually walking into my favorite films! So after my visits, I have gathered a list of my favorite things about this new addition to the park. Let’s see if mine are some of yours too!

10. Pavement-Surprised? Yes, believe it or not, the pavement in the New Fantasyland is pretty cool in my opinion as it also follows the theme. This is not a new trick, Disney has been doing this for awhile. One of my favorite examples is the pavement around the Magic Carpets of Aladdin. Anyway, the pavement around Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid is littered with shells; and at Storybook Circus, there are a variety of different animal footprints, including that of an elephant! Hmmm… Wonder who that elephant might be?

9. Village Square-I don’t think this is an official name for an area, but it’s the best I could come up with for the space in front of Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour Village Gifts. For one, I like both of these places and the detail inside; but secondly, this spot makes me feel like I’m actually in the movie! I almost expect to see Belle curled up on the fountain reading with the sheep running by. It just offers one of those immersive experiences.

8. Casey Jr. Splash n’ Soak Station-This water play area at Storybook Circus is so cute and really helps communicate the animal circus theme. It’s a great place for kids to not only cool off, but to run free after being confined to strollers and long, crowded lines all day.

7. Castle Walls-The entrance to the New Fantasyland are extensions of the Cinderella Castle wall; and while simple, it helps to tie the old Fantasyland to the new and brings the iconic, majestic castle to a whole new area! I think this is a great spot to take pictures; and it’s really pretty lit up at night. Be sure to walk under the archways and to pay attention to the details.

6. New Merchandise-One of my favorite things to do at Disney World is to shop; and I have really enjoyed shopping for all the New Fantasyland themed merchandise! Bonjour Gifts offers a great selection, such as the light-up castle goblets available at Be Our Guest, decorative pillows, tees, and artwork. Also, other stores in Fantasyland offer new stuff too, such as New Fantasyland pins and Little Mermaid gear, including a Dinglehopper Brush!

5. Enchanted Tales with Belle-This attraction is housed in Maurice’s Cottage and lets you walk through the home where Belle grew up, complete with charming details, before entering an amazing magic mirror which transports you into the Beast’s Castle! There you and other guests, particularly the kids, prepare to act out a story for Belle with props, courtesy of an audio-animatronic wardrobe from the film, before entering the Beast’s Library to meet a life-like, audio-animatronic Lumiere and Belle herself! The attraction is an amazing character experience; and the different rooms, characters, and details are incredible! While it’s geared towards guests, I think adults will be delightfully surprised too.

4. Tangled Restroom Area-Right around the corner from the Haunted Mansion is a brand new restroom area, which may not sound interesting; but this area features Rapunzel’s tower, a plaza strung with floating lanterns, a recharging station for phones, and lots of details inside and around the restrooms. Like what? How about wanted posters of Flynn and the guys from the Snuggly Duckling? Or Rapunzel’s paints and guitar? Keep your eyes open for Pascal too.

3. Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid-This dark ride attraction takes you on Ariel’s journey, beginning with a cool descent under the sea, and through major moments from the movie. My personal favorite part of this attraction is actually the queue. Weird, I know, but it’s true! The line begins outside of Prince Eric’s Castle before taking you into a seaside grotto littered with treasures. There’s even a subtle interactive game where you can help Scuttle collect some of treasures, just like Ariel likes to do. The detail and décor of this whole line is pretty awesome and I’m sure it’s going to take many more visits before I see everything to be found here.

2. Be Our Guest Restaurant-This restaurant is incredible in so many ways! I was floored by everything about it, from the walk over the drawbridge, to the whispering and snoring enchanted suits of armor, to snow falling outside the ballroom windows, and the totally creepy West Wing. I visited for lunch, got to see the cool self-ordering systems, and then grabbed a table in the ballroom; and it truly does look just like the ballroom from the movie! The West Wing was my second favorite room, especially the wilting, enchanted rose. The food was pretty tasty too. I would recommend the Potato Leek Soup!

1. Visiting at Night-I visited the New Fantasyland for the first time one morning right after rope drop; but later in my trip, I came for a second look after dark. It was a whole new experience as both the Beast’s Castle and Prince Eric’s Castle are alight at night, as well as the waterfalls and rockwork, and the Tangled restroom area is reminiscent of the nighttime floating lantern scene! I definitely recommend you visit after sunset if you haven’t already; and hopefully the crowd levels will be lower than usual too.

So these are just a few of my favorite things about the New Fantasyland; and the best part is that there’s more to come! The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Princess Fairytale Hall are still in the works, so there’s even more to discover in the months to come.

Are you excited? What do you like the most about New Fantasyland? Let me know!

Sofia

In case you missed the news from last week… One of the newest (and youngest) Disney princesses, Sofia the First, of Disney Junior’s hit series is finally making an appearance at the Disney parks.

Sofia the First” has become the #1 cable TV series among kids ages 2-5 since it made its debut on Disney Junior the Channel earlier this year. Now Sofia, who happens to be Disney’s first little girl princess, has arrived at Disney Parks.

There are a few places where you can see Sofia. She is currently appearing every day at Disney’s California Adventure park, where she meets new friends in Hollywood Land near “Disney Junior – Live on Stage!” The “Disney Junior- Live on Stage!” show was also recently updated to feature two of Disney Junior’s most popular shows, “Sofia the First” and “Doc McStuffins.”

Starting later this summer, you will also be able to catch Sofia making appearances outside the new “Disney Junior – Live on Stage!” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. There, you will even find a beautiful immersive backdrop that was inspired by the storybook world of Enchancia, where you can meet and take photos with the lovely Sofia.

Is your little princess excited to meet Sofia the First in the Disney Parks?

4th of July Fun with Disney’s Spoonful.com

Group

Happy Birthday America! We love holidays in my family and Independence Day is one o our favorites. Delicious food, family time, games, backyard baseball, and fireworks; it’s always a fun day. To help celebrate America’s birthday we tried several crafts and tasty recipes that are available on Spoonful.com. After finding our inspiration on their 4th of July page, we got down to serious craft and recipe making business!

Hot Dogs

We chose three recipes from the Spoonful.com’s 4th of July page. We made Berry Kabob Cupcakes, Red, White and Blueberry Fruit Salad, and Rocket Dogs to help fuel our craft-making party. My chef-in-training is 10 and was very proud of being able to make the Rocket Dogs independently. She said, “It made me feel like Princess Tiana. Maybe I could have a restaurant like hers one day.” If the other dishes in her restaurant are as tasty as the Rocket Dogs were then I would like the first reservation please!

Fruit Salad

Next, we made the Red, White and Blueberry Fruit Salad together. I was very excited to see such a healthy choice for our celebration and best of all; it was delicious! I actually think it was a bigger hit than the cupcakes; it was that good! The Berry Kabob Cupcakes were super simple to make and were the perfect ending to our patriotic lunch. The recipes were very easy to follow and I know we will be making more of the recipes on the site in the future.

Cupcakes

Spoonful.com inspired us with many fun crafts to help decorate for our Independence Day celebration. We decided to make Uncle Sam Hat Treat Holders, Star-Spangled Wavers, and a Firecracker Crown. Of course, no celebration at our proud Disney Addict house would be complete without a Disney touch so we also included several Disney crafts. We made Mickey’s 4th of July Hat, Mickey & Friends Patriotic Hot Dog Holder to hold our Rocket Dogs, Mickey’s 4th of July Candy Box, Mickey & Friends 4th of July Flag, Mickey & Donald’s Patriotic Pinwheel, Mickey Mouse Grill Master Hat, Minnie’s 4th of July Headband, and finished with some Mickey & Friends bunting.

The supplies we needed included:

  • Scissors
  • Red, blue, white, and black felt
  • Red, blue, white, and silver ribbons
  • Glue
  • 6 long bamboo skewers (or dowels)
  • Red and white foam sheets
  • Blue tape
  • Sticker stars
  • Gold and silver pipe cleaners
  • Tape
  • Styrofoam cup
  • Red paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Black Marker
  • Printable templates
  • Straight pin
  • Pencil eraser

Supplies

Star-Spangled Wavers, Mickey & Friends Patriotic Hot Dog Holder, Mickey & Friends 4th of July Flag, Mickey & Friends bunting: These printables were the easiest for my youngest crafter and were easy to complete in just a few minutes. They involved simple steps and easy to follow instructions.

Uncle Sam Hat Treat Holders, Firecracker Crown, Mickey & Donald’s Patriotic Pinwheel, Mickey Mouse Grill Master Hat: A little more challenging, these crafts turned out adorable! The pinwheel does involve a straight pin so adult help would definitely be needed for younger crafters.  The Uncle Sam Hat Treat Holder involved painting so it was a little messier than the others. The Firecracker Crown was a lot of fun to make together and has helped to make some new favorite pictures!

Z-working

Catie-working

Mickey’s 4th of July Hat, Mickey’s 4th of July Candy Box, Minnie’s 4th of July Headband:  These cuties were the most challenging of the crafts we made. Mickey’s Hat and the Candy Box involved very intricate cutting and careful instruction reading. Minnie’s Headband was our favorite craft and is going along with us to watch fireworks on the 4th! It requires hot glue so it also needs some adult help.

We had a wonderful time together getting ready to celebrate Independence Day using the ideas we found on Spoonful.com. We use this site often in my family and we always find a new idea or fun activity to do together. How are you celebrating Independence Day? I would love to hear about your plans! My first plan is to make some more fruit salad!

Disney CEO Bob Iger Contract Extended

Iger and Lucas

Robert “Bob” Iger will stick around as the head of the Walt Disney Company for a few more years.

Disney announced Monday that Iger’s contract as chairman and CEO was extended through June 30, 2016. His contract terms did not change. Iger was originally supposed to step down as CEO in 2015, and stay on as chairman until 2016.

Disney acquired Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm properties under Iger’s leadership. Disney says the new Avatarland at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista, and Shanghai Disneyland, are both supposed to open in 2015.

The shareholders are particularly happy with Iger. In an official news release, Orin Smith, independent lead director of the Disney Board, said shareholders saw a return of 193 percent.

Robert Iger has been CEO for nearly 8 years. He took over in 2005, after Michael Eisner.

Pixar will be pulling back on Sequels

Toy Story Sunnyside

MU

One common complaint about Disney Pixar over the past few years concerns their reliance on sequel/prequel ideas. They admit it’s become an issue and are vowing to change course.

Pixar President Ed Catmull revealed that the animation studio now plans to release one original story a year.

“For artistic reasons … it’s really important that we do an original film a year,” says Catmull. “Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world — which is the rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren’t doing original films.”

Later in the interview Catmull admits that they won’t depart from sequels entirely. Pixar’s plan is to release “one and a half” movies a year, meaning that there will be one original film a year and a sequel every other year.

Pixar’s plan has already been put in action. The studio has just one sequel in their upcoming slate: the Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory. The follow-up is due out November 2015, which is two years after 2013′s Monsters University. That same year they will release Inside Out, an original story.

Beyond Dory, Pixar has plans for releases in June 2017, November 2017, and June 2018. The projects set for these dates are not yet known. The most likely sequels are either Toy Story 4 or The Incredibles 2.

Next year Pixar will unveil The Good Dinosaur, an original story set in an alternate version of Earth where dinosaurs never went extinct.

Have Fun At Home With A Disney Family Game Night!

Candyland
Candyland

Candyland

I don’t know about you, but personally I tend to get really antsy in the months/weeks leading up to my Walt Disney World vacation, and while nothing can really cure this (except for WDW itself!), I have found some ways to help make the waiting time less painful – one of them is to host a Disney Game Night! It’s a great way to get you in the “Disney” mood, and there are a lot of different games to try:

If you have Young Kids, I recommend heading to Target or Wal-Mart and grabbing Disney Memory, Disney Princess Yahtzee, or a deck of Disney playing cards for Go Fish. Or, while you’re in WDW, head over to “Once Upon A Toy”, located in Downtown Disney, where you can not only create a custom Mr. Potato Head, but you can also pick up the Disney Parks Edition of Candyland!

Older Kids/Teens will enjoy using the creepy/fun Nightmare Before Christmas deck of cards, or the Muppets version of Yahtzee found at “Once Upon A Toy”. A personal favorite of mine is the Haunted Mansion version of the game of Life – it’s a great twist on a classic game. Of course there’s always the world of video games too – like Epic Mickey, Lego Star Wars, and more – these might be harder to apapt to a family game night, but if you can get your kids to share it with you, they will definitely get a kick out of watching mom and dad play along!

The Whole Family will love Disney Trivial Pursuit – the questions range in topics – from Disney Channel shows to classic movies to Park trivia, and the level of difficulty would work for those of all ages! My family and I play this one a lot, and it’s a great way to get yourself thinking about the Parks and all that you will get to enjoy on your next WDW vacation!

If you aren’t heading to the Parks soon and you want to get your hands on some of these great games, then I recommend you check out the Disney Store, Amazon, and Ebay, where you can find all of these and a whole lot more

And of course, no game night would be complete without food and drinks! You could always do a theme – have Tea like Alice In Wonderland, or recreate a Disney Parks favorite dish with the help of a Disney Cookbook, or simply serve some chocolate Mickey cookies and milk!

Still feeling homesick for Disney? Then you could try hosting a Disney Movie night, or have your kids help you do a Disney craft (like a Vacation countdown perhaps?)

What types of fun things does YOUR family do to get ready for your next WDW vacation?

Planning a Disney Royal Date Night

image03

WL

If you are planning on visiting the Walt Disney World Resort with your special someone, you may want to consider a date night. Dining and entertainment options that are both romantic and memorable can be found throughout the resort.

Today’s Disney Date Night suggestion is all about being treated like royalty at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.
**Please note that wearing a tiara or crown is optional.**

date nite

Prior to your room departure, surprise your prince or princess with a royal proclamation describing the evening’s festivities. You can create one to take along on your trip, or write your note on a Disney postcard. This makes a great keepsake for a scrapbook or photo album.

Begin your royal evening with a dinner for two at Artist Point, a restaurant with a rustic, Pacific Northwest feel. Dine on fare that includes seafood, steak, and arguably some of the best desserts within the Walt Disney World Resort. Boasting an extensive wine list and scenic views, Artist Point is the perfect beginning to a magical evening. Advanced dining reservations are necessary and there is a dress code requirement.

Every prince and princess should have their very own horse and carriage. After dinner, take a leisurely 15 minute stroll or a short boat ride from Disney’s Wilderness Lodge to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. Weather permitting, horse and carriage rides depart every half hour from 5:30 PM- 9:30 PM nightly. There is a per-guest fee associated and reservations can be obtained by calling (407) 939-7529.   Remember to give your best royal wave to passersby as you take in the scenic pathways and landscapes!

End your royal experience by walking hand in hand over to the Bay Lake to view the Electrical Water Pageant. Sea creatures and patriotic floats light up the lagoon and glide along to familiar Disney music. The pageant takes place at the resort nightly at 9:45 PM.

Do you plan date nights while visiting Walt Disney World Resort? Do you have any tips for a memorable evening?  Please share your thoughts and ideas!
