Money Saving Tips

If you’ve ever planned a Walt Disney World vacation, you know visiting the mouse is not cheap! Between airfare, park tickets, and hotel, you can end up spending thousands of dollars on your dream vacation. Once you arrive at Disney, you may also have additional expenses including food and souvenirs. Fortunately, there are several easy ways you can save money on your Disney vacation!

  • Stay At A Value Resort – For many families, most of their time at Disney is spent in the parks and not at the hotel. Why pay hundreds more for a moderate or deluxe hotel when you won’t be spending much time there? Even if you do chose to spend part  of the day at the resort pool, the value resorts offer great themed pools that you and your family are sure to enjoy.
  • Purchase Gift Cards – If you have a membership to Sam’s Club, you may have noticed they sell Disney gift cards. These gift cards are usually sold for a few dollars less than the amount on the cards. You can use these Disney gift cards to pay for almost everything on your vacation, including park tickets, hotel, food, and souvenirs. Purchasing the discounted gift cards to pay for your vacation will save you a little bit of money.
  • Drink Free Ice Water – In order to comply with Florida law, Disney will provide a cup of ice water to you at no cost. With bottled water and soft drinks costing several dollars each, drinking this free ice water at meals can save quite a bit of money throughout your vacation.
  • Split Meals – The meal portions at Disney are usually rather large. If your family eats like mine, a half portion may be enough to fill them up. Splitting meals at Disney can significantly cut the cost of dining on your vacation.
  • Use Disney Transportation – Disney provides free transportation to guests staying at Disney resort hotels. This service starts when you arrive at the airport. Disney’s Magical Express will transport you for free from the airport to your hotel. They will also provide free transportation to the airport for your return home. Buses provide transportation from each hotel to the parks, Downtown Disney, and anywhere else you would want to go on Disney property. Depending on which hotel you stay at, you may even have access to free transportation via monorail and ferry boat. These free transportation options can save you money by eliminating the need for a rental car if you plan on staying at Disney for your entire vacation.
  • Travel During The Off-Season – Traveling to Walt Disney World during peak times such as summertime or Christmastime will cost you quite a bit more. If your schedule allows, plan a vacation during the off-season at Disney. They usually lower the costs of hotel rooms during these times in order to attract more guests to visit the parks. The off-season at Disney includes, with the exception of holidays, January – early February, late August – September, and late November – early December.

Do you have any other special tips to help save money on your Disney vacation? We would love to hear them in the comments below!

hoop dee do

What will you celebrate today?  If you’ve ever joined in for the Celebrate a Dream Come True parade at Magic Kingdom, you’ll have the song in your head all day long, won’t  you?  At least I do.  Disney World is all about celebrating the little, sweet moments in life, while in a place of magic and whimsy.  But what if you really do have an occasion to celebrate?  Disney has ways to make it special, and we’re offering some tips today on how you can add to the magic!

  • Disney Floral and Gifts.  Disney Floral and Gifts is a wonderful resource for in room surprises and fun.  They’ll deliver balloons, flowers, mouse ears, fun theme packages, and cakes to your resort room.  Their selections range from fun Star Wars and Pirate themed packages for the kids, to princesses and classic characters.  Also, you’ll find themed packages such as weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations.  Even though they can be a bit pricey, it is worth it!  Their items are good quality, and if you watch closely you’ll see gifts related to Disney events like marathons, MNSSHP, and MVMCP.
  • Schedule a special event.  The Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert party, Illuminations cruise, or a special tour such as Keys to the Kingdom or Behind the Seeds make for a fun celebration.  However, if you are celebrating kids, maybe a Pirates and Pals Fireworks Cruise, My Disney Girl’s Perfectly Princess Tea Party, or the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.  Any of these, along with several others make for a sweet celebration!
  • The Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue.  If you are celebrating something as a family, take in a fun show together!  The Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue, Chip and Dale’s Campfire Sing a Long, and the Luau at the Polynesian all make for fun family times!  Whenever you can get your family together and centered around fun for everyone, it’s bound to be something magical and memorable!
  • Signature Dining.  Celebrating an anniversary?  Retirement?  Or what about a proposal?  Then a Signature Dining experience might be for you!  These can allow you to have a relaxed, date night while enjoying Disney’s finest foods.  If you time your reservation right, you’ll catch Wishes from the California Grill or Victoria and Albert’s.  Since these dining locations require a dress code, the atmosphere in general is more sophisticated and adult friendly.
  • Decorate your room.  Bring along balloons, window clings, and other Disney themed decor from home!  If you are celebrating a fun family event, bring small Disney themed gifts to present to your children everyday.  They’ll think it’s magical that Mickey had visited their room to leave them something!   You can string lights across the windows, or even put fun stickers on the mirrors. Adding these sweet touches to your celebration will make everyone feel right at home.

There are so many reasons to celebrate, and many families take time to celebrate at Walt Disney World.  With so many options and fun for everyone, Disney makes it easy to pull off a surprise or a celebration no matter how big or small the event is!  How do you celebrate at Disney?  What is your most magical celebratory moment?

Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch in California to Expand

Disney’s Golden Oak ranch in Placerita Canyon, California has just received unanimous approval to expand the community in a meeting held by the Los Angeles County planning commission, according to officials.

The Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning hosted a public hearing regarding the project’s 58-acre development area.

The expansion plan calls for the addition of indoor sound stages along with support facilities on Placerita Canyon Road in Newhall. This location is found in unincorporated Los Angeles County, which is adjacent to the city of Santa Clarita.

“We completed the first hearing today,” said Kim Szalay, a principal regional planner of the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning.

The planning commissioners have approved two different version of the project. The first plan would involve the construction of 555,950 square feet of structures, while the second plan would involve the construction of only 510,000 square feet of structures.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors  still have to vote for the project’s final approval within the next two or three months.

“The Board action will be the final action on the project,” Szalay said.

The Board will take into consideration the tentative map, which includes plans to create either 20 lots or 18 lots, respectively. The proposed plans also include a water tank area, trail area, two potential mobile home relocation areas, and a conditional parking area to be added to Disney’s approximately 890-acre Golden Oak Ranch.

One of the possible hindrances to the proposal is that it does require the removal of 158 oak trees as well as encroachment into the protected zone of 82 oak trees.

The Board’s final hearing will be open to the public, too.

“The public can participate in the hearing at the Board,” said Szalay “They can make comments.”

There has not been an announcement on when construction is expected to begin.

Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch has been part of unincorporated Los Angeles for more than 50 years.

Have you ever been to Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch? Would you like to see it expand?

Disney Celebrates 60 years of Imagineering at D23 Expo

60 years of imagenering
60 years of imagenering

60 years of imagenering

In honor of the 60th anniversary of Walt Disney Imagineering and the origins of Disney Parks and Resorts, Imagineering is hosting an “open house” at the D23 Expo, August 9-11, opening the doors of its unique facilities and offering an unprecedented look at its creative processes—all on the floor of the Anaheim Convention Center. In addition, Imagineers past and present will host an entire day of panel discussions on Sunday, August 11, celebrating their 60 magical years of “dreaming and doing.”

Within the “open house” pavilion, D23 Expo guests will get an up close look at an eclectic array of Imagineering’s creative minds—ride engineers, model builders, pre-visualization artists, special effects designers, inventors, and show animators—as they share the skills and talents behind Imagineering’s creative process. In addition, guests will have the chance to glimpse at the “workspaces” of several project teams from around Disney’s global portfolio of parks and resorts, perhaps spotting a few clues into coming attractions along the way.

For the first time at the D23 Expo, Walt Disney Imagineering will be showcasing some of its most historical and revered concept art from its Art Library, including Herb Ryman’s original drawing of Disneyland. Also in the Disney Parks pavilion, D23 Expo guests will again have the chance to explore Mickey’s of Glendale, an outlet of Walt Disney Imagineering’s employee-only store, to shop for unique souvenirs and collectibles and Walt Disney Imagineering merchandise not available anywhere else.

In addition to the Imagineering Open House, D23 Expo attendees will be able to attend 12 unique presentations and panel discussions that will take fans on the incredible journey behind the latest Disney resorts, attractions, and entertainment including:

· The Art and Artistry of Aulani – Imagineers Joe Rohde and Jeanette Lomboy will share the authentic tapestry of art and stories found at Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa.

· Mayhem, Mischief, and Monkeys: The Magic of Mystic Manor – Join Imagineers Joe Lanzisero and others for the strange stories behind Hong Kong Disneyland’s Mystic Manor, the newest and one of the most sophisticated attractions ever built.

· Undiscovered Disneyland – Legendary Imagineer Tony Baxter shares rare and never-before-seen footage of the early days of Disneyland, from design and construction through opening day.

· Broadcasts from Buena Vista Street – Enjoy the latest ‘soundtrack’ from Disney California Adventure’s Buena Vista Street, featuring a live performance of Scary Symphony from radio station KBVS and a panel discussion led by Imagineers.

· Disney Ambassadors – Join current Disney Parks Ambassadors from around the world as they discuss this renowned program and share insights about its rich heritage, current outreach efforts, and the importance of sharing Disney goodwill.

· Voices of the Disney Parks – Back by popular demand, this panel of famous Disney voices will gather for an encore panel discussion, including recreations of some unforgettable Disney Parks sayings.

· Charles Phoenix Presents – Noted humorist and self-proclaimed “retro daddy” Charles Phoenix shares some of his favorite images from around Disney, featuring classic kitsch, clashing colors schemes, and hairdos that truly defy gravity.
The panels continue on Sunday August 11, with a full day dedicated to the celebration of Walt Disney Imagineering’s 60th anniversary. The presentations in the 2,000-seat Stage 23 with current and former Imagineers will explore a wide range of topics, from working with Walt Disney himself and the exploration of creativity, innovation, and humor in the parks, to a lively discussion of what it’s like to lead one of the world’s most creative organizations. More details on these exciting panels and presenters will be revealed soon.

Disney Renames Mickey Mouse Club Stage for Annette Funicello

Annette

Annette

The stage at the Walt Disney Studios where “The Mickey Mouse Club” was filmed has now been officially renamed the Annette Funicello Stage. Disney chief Bob Iger hosted a ceremony on Monday, June 24, 2013 in order to dedicate the soundstage to Annette Funicello, the Mouseketeer-turned-movie star who died this past April at the age of 70.

Iger admitted to even having a crush on Annette Funicello while he was growing up, as did many young viewers who watched the perky brunette on the Mickey Mouse Club. Many people including former Mouseketeers, Annette Funicello’s family and colleagues, and even Mickey Mouse himself also participated in Monday’s dedication. Frankie Avalon, Richard Sherman, and Leonard Maltin were just a few of the names among those who came to honor the late actress.

Did you know that Julie Andrews is the only other entertainer to have a namesake stage at the Walt Disney studios?

Disney announced today that on Monday night, June 24, local heroes were honored at 15+ special advance screenings around the country as part of a 60+ nationwide screening program executed in conjunction with The Lone Ranger Ride for Justice campaign. Armie Hammer, who plays John Reid aka The Lone Ranger in Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ epic adventure “The Lone Ranger,” opening July 3, made a surprise appearance at the New York screening to award plaques to two local heroes, FDNY EMT Brendon Hernandez and Vietnam Veteran Sgt. Israel “Jorge” Lugo of the Bronx Vet Center.

Hernandez was also recognized recently by Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly as one of the two heroic EMTs who recently disarmed a deranged man who wrestled a gun away from a NYPD policeman and used it to shoot another officer outside of Harlem Hospital. Lugo is a hero to heroes, having served two tours in Vietnam and dedicated his time thereafter serving his fellow veterans in need by actively volunteering in services that are available to them with regard to health, jobs and housing and also visiting veterans in nursing homes across New York City.

In addition to Hernandez and Lugo, other local heroes honored on Monday night include Vietnam War Veteran and humanitarian Arturo Cuevas (Los Angeles), Shakira, the hero dog (San Francisco), John Gordon and the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation (Chicago), Vince DiSanto and the entire King of Prussia Volunteer Fire Company (Philadelphia), Regainne Georges of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (Miami), Dr. Maura Iversen, Chair of the Northeastern Physical Therapy program whose students assisted at the finish line of the Boston Marathon (Boston), Hector Guzman, a veteran who helped clean up after hurricane Katrina (Houston), Gino Mojica of Doraville Police Department (Atlanta), Officer Paul Chavez of the Phoenix Police Department (Phoenix), Desmond Fulton and the Denver Fire Department (Denver), Michael Waldrop, veteran, Purple Heart recipient and Founder of Camaraderie Foundation (Orlando), Robert Norris & Jonathan Moore, founders of 2 Men and a Truck who supplied relief aid for those affected by recent tornado damage (Oklahoma City), Sheriff Deputy Brian Behrend (Detroit) and San Antonio Fire Department (San Antonio).
