Move over, Mufasa—there’s a new top dog at the box office! DreamWorks Animation’s “Dog Man” had a tail-wagging debut, raking in a whopping $36 million over its opening weekend, making it the biggest movie premiere of 2025 so far. Based on the beloved graphic novel series by Dav Pilkey, this crime-fighting canine’s first big-screen adventure is already proving to be a hit with audiences, who gave it an 86% Popcornmeter verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Bark-Worthy Box Office Run

With a modest $40 million production budget, “Dog Man” is already on track to be a major win for DreamWorks and Universal Pictures. It’s also marking a strong start for family-friendly films this year, following the trend set in 2024 when PG-rated movies dominated the box office. The film’s only slight setback? A soft overseas debut, with just $4.2 million from 29 international markets—but there’s still plenty of time for this pup to find its footing worldwide.

While “Dog Man” ruled the box office, the horror-comedy “Companion” also impressed, scaring up $9.5 million for a second-place finish. Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King”, which had been top dog (er, lion) in January, still held strong in its seventh week, adding $6.1 million to its massive $653 million global total.

Walt Disney World Expands Disability Access Service (DAS) Registration Window and Updates Policy Wording

Walt Disney World has recently made adjustments to its Disability Access Service (DAS) program, providing guests with more time to determine eligibility and making subtle yet notable wording changes to its policy. The latest update allows guests to begin the DAS registration process up to 60 days in advance of their visit—double the previous 30-day window. This change gives visitors more flexibility when planning their trips and may help alleviate congestion in the live video chat system, which often experiences high demand from last-minute registrants.

Another key update involves a rewording of DAS eligibility criteria, specifically the removal of the word “only” from the eligibility statement, which now reads “DAS is intended to accommodate those Guests who, due to a developmental disability like autism or similar, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period of time.” While Disney has not explicitly confirmed whether this signals a broader interpretation of who qualifies, the change allows for more flexibility in how the policy is applied. However, DAS eligibility remains focused on guests with developmental disabilities, such as autism, that prevent them from waiting in a conventional queue for extended periods.

These updates follow a recent overhaul of the Disability Access Service, which resulted in increased restrictions on DAS approvals leaving many guests with disabilities who were previously awarded DAS no longer eligible. Despite these recent updates, several key aspects of DAS remain unchanged. Once approved, DAS is still valid for 240 days and allows the registered guest to bring up to three additional people (for a total of four) on return time selections. Guests can continue to book same-day DAS return times via the My Disney Experience app, with the option to visit Guest Relations or a Guest Experience Team location if needed.

Universal Studios Florida Is Celebrating 30 Years of Mardi Gras Magic!

For three decades, Universal Orlando has been bringing the spirit of New Orleans to Florida with its electrifying Mardi Gras celebration, and in 2025, the party is bigger and bolder than ever! Since its debut in 1995, this immersive festival of music, food, and fun has transformed Universal Studios Florida into a vibrant hub of beads, brass bands, and high-energy entertainment. What started as a daring idea—rolling full-sized New Orleans floats down I-4 (a feat we cannot imagine actually happening today!)—has grown into one of the park’s most beloved annual events, drawing thousands of guests each season.

At the heart of the celebration is the legendary parade, featuring signature floats crafted by Kern Studios, the same masterminds behind the authentic New Orleans Mardi Gras spectacles. King Gator, a fan-favorite since 1998, makes his triumphant return alongside other iconic floats, showering the crowd with beads as they roll down the streets. And this year, Universal is pulling out all the stops with brand-new parade elements, including a second-line band leading the procession. The festivities don’t stop there—by day, guests can enjoy live jazz performances, stilt walkers, and a French Quarter-style street party, while select nights bring the Mardi Gras Concert Series, featuring a lineup of chart-topping artists.

Orlando’s Hotel Industry Experienced A Slump in 2024, Epic Universe Expected to Boost 2025 Bookings

Orlando’s hotel occupancy rate saw a decline for much of 2024, largely due to an increase in available hotel rooms and a slowdown in visitor numbers. According to reporting by the Orlando Sentinel, the area’s 130,000 rooms experienced lower bookings in the early and mid-year months, with occupancy rates dropping as much as 3.7% in September. However, a strong final quarter, with notable increases in October, November, and December, helped offset the earlier declines, leaving the annual occupancy rate down only 1.1% from 2023 at 71.6%.

Orlando Hotel Occupancy Drops in 2024 1

Several factors contributed to the decline and late-year rebound, including inflation, shifts in post-pandemic travel patterns, and the strength of the U.S. dollar, which led some domestic travelers to choose international destinations. Additionally, the highly anticipated opening of Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe in May 2025 may have prompted some potential visitors to delay their trips. Throughout 2024, new hotel openings, such as Evermore Orlando Resort and Conrad Orlando, added to the region’s lodging supply, further impacting occupancy rates.

Looking ahead, Epic Universe is expected to drive a surge in tourism, with Universal Orlando expanding its hotel offerings to meet demand. Three new resorts—Stella Nova, Terra Luna, and Grand Helios—will add over 2,000 rooms near the new theme park. While Orlando’s overall hotel occupancy in 2025 may remain steady, Universal’s growing portfolio positions it to capture a larger share of visitors. The long-term impact of Epic Universe on the city’s tourism and hotel industry will become clearer as travel patterns adjust throughout the year.

Honoring Heroes: A Special Disney Day for Families of Fallen Service Members

Disney has long held a deep respect for the sacrifices made by service members and their families, and that admiration was on full display as they recently welcomed families of fallen U.S. and British military heroes for a day of magic at Walt Disney World Resort. For the third time, Disney partnered with the National Football League (NFL) and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) to host these families ahead of the NFL Pro Bowl in Orlando. The nonprofit organization, dedicated to supporting those who have lost a loved one in military service, provided this special experience as part of a weekend filled with football, remembrance, and healing.

The families, who traveled from across the country and as far as England, began their day at EPCOT, where they were greeted with warmth and excitement. Their adventure kicked off with a thrilling ride on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, an experience made even more memorable by a surprise meet-and-greet with none other than Star-Lord himself. As they zipped through the cosmos on the attraction, smiles and laughter filled the air—creating moments of joy amid a weekend of remembrance.

For the families, the day was about more than just the attractions; it was an opportunity to connect, honor their fallen heroes, and create new memories together. “Today was magical, fun, and filled with surprises for the families of the fallen,” said Diana Roday Hosford, TAPS vice president of Sports & Entertainment. “These incredible Walt Disney World welcomes have become a tradition for TAPS, and being so personal and meaningful, the Disney Salute team makes us feel like family.”

A heartfelt welcome was extended by members of Disney SALUTE, the company’s veteran employee resource group, who understand firsthand the impact of military service and loss. The group, founded over a decade ago, is dedicated to honoring and empowering Disney cast members with military backgrounds while fostering a sense of community and support. Also in attendance were Walt Disney World Ambassadors Serena Arvizu and Shannon Smith-Conrad, both of whom come from military families and deeply understood the significance of the moment. “It’s so important for us to recognize and thank the men and women serving our country, as well as their families, for the sacrifices they make every day,” Shannon shared.

Disney’s commitment to honoring the military extends beyond single events like this one. With a legacy of support dating back to founders Walt and Roy O. Disney—who both served during World War I—the company continues to champion veterans and military families through ongoing initiatives. The relationship with TAPS is just one of the many ways Disney strives to bring comfort, joy, and lasting memories to those who have given so much.

Though their loved ones may be gone, their legacy lives on in the hearts of those they left behind—and in the moments of happiness created through experiences like this.

Check-In on the Kali River Rapids Refurbishment at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Kali River Rapids, the thrilling white-water adventure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, has officially gone dry for its annual refurbishment. The attraction, known for its rip-roaring currents, erupting geysers, and drenching drops, closed on January 6, 2025, and is expected to reopen in March. While refurbishments are a routine part of theme park operations, the downtime is hard to miss, especially for guests hoping to cool off with a refreshing splash.

The closure is evident across multiple points in the park. The ride is no longer listed as operational on the MyDisneyExperience app, the Lightning Lane return times have been covered, and a prominent sign at the entrance confirms its temporary closure. A large Connect Four style game was positioned near the entrance during our visit to provide younger guests with entertainment. Another themed sign adds an extra layer of storytelling, reading: “Dear trekkers, Kali Rapids Expeditions is closed for the season. Please explore the rest of our local sites! Namaste.” A peek at the ride path shows that the rapids have completely ceased flowing for now, emphasizing that work is well underway.

Adding to the refurbishment scenery, guests may spot two themed PPG Paints signs at the attraction, one stating, “The Wonders of Nature Are Endless” and another declaring, “The Wilderness Must Be Explored.” PPG Paints, a local Orlando company and the official paint supplier for Walt Disney World, has become a familiar presence during refurbishments in recent years. These signs, often themed to blend into their surroundings, help maintain the immersive experience even as work is being done behind the scenes.

In the meantime, guests looking for adventure can explore the rest of Asia, take a trek through the Maharajah Jungle, or enjoy the thrills of Expedition Everest.

Stay tuned for updates as we get closer to the attraction’s reopening!
