Some Store Closures Coming to Walt Disney World

P1140072
P1140072

P1140072

I hate when anything at Disney closes, but I understand they have to change with the times.

First up on the chopping block is, Wyland Galleries (closed Dec 3, 2013) which is located at the Polynesian Resort. They sold artwork, sculptures, etc. My daughter and I used to love taking a stroll through that store. Their location at the Boardwalk Resort will still be open.

Next is, Heritage House which is the gift shop for the Hall of Presidents. This location will close Jan 4, 2014.

Last but certainly not least is The Seven Dwarfs Mine Shop, also closing Jan 4, 2014. This was the gift shop to Snow White’s Scary Adventure in Fantasyland.

It has not been said yet what will happen with these locations but I image Disney has something fun up their sleeves.

Just in case you didn’t already have enough reasons to visit Disney World in 2014, here are a few more:

  • Meet Magician Mickey Mouse at Magic Kingdom Park. If you haven’t visited Town Square Theater at Magic Kingdom Park lately, you’re in for a delight when you see the tricks Mickey has up his sleeve.
  • Food trucks recently debuted at Downtown Disney as a fun new dining option. Check them out Wednesdays through Sundays, from 5 – 11 p.m. parked at Downtown Disney West Side near Cirque du Soleil and House of Blues.
  • Another season of 2014 runDisney racing fun begins January 8, with the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. Check out runDisney’s official website for details on races both here and at the Disneyland Resort.
  • The Atlanta Braves will return to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for spring training, which means a chance to attend fun preseason games beginning in February.
  • Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival returns to the park March 5 – May 18. This annual festival, with its floral displays, topiaries, and food fun, will showcase Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy as this year’s lead topiary.
  • There’s always something fun planned for St. Patrick’s Day at Downtown Disney each year, especially at Raglan Road.
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios will mark its 25th anniversary on May 1, 2014. Stay tuned for more on this milestone closer to time.
  • Star Wars Weekends will add more film fun to Disney’s Hollywood Studios May 16-June 8, 2014.
  • Car Masters Weekend, an event that’s perfect for car lovers (and lovers of “Cars”), will return to Downtown Disney June 14 – June 15, 2014. Details still to come.
  • Disney’s Night of Joy will return to Magic Kingdom Park on September 5-6, with artists MercyMe and Matthew West already in the lineup.
  • Spice Road Table, a new restaurant planned for the Morocco pavilion at Epcot, will open its doors in early 2014.
  • Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade will debut at Magic Kingdom Park this spring. This new daytime parade will feature floats inspired by the films “The Little Mermaid,” “Tangled,” “Brave” and many more.
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, the latest and largest installment in the New Fantasyland expansion, will debut at Magic Kingdom Park in 2014 to tell the story of “Snow White” from the perspective of the Seven Dwarfs. All we know is it is opening in Spring 2014 but we have heard rumors they might start as early as January.

What are you looking forward to the most in 2014?

More MyMagic+ Changes Coming Soon to Disney World

Disney World has been working on improving the MyMagic+ System. Over the next few months you will see a new and improved ‘My Disney Experience’  site and  app. It seems as though the new and improved versions will be faster.

Offsite guests use of the Fastpass+ system will be exanded to the other parks. This means that the paper fastpass is on it’s way out. So everyone will be able to use Fastpass+ by Spring of this year.

This is assuming that the test phases go according to plan and there are no other glitches, the entire MyMagic+ system should be up and running and in use by all Disney World guests by Spring 2014.

There has been no official word from Disney on the release of Magicbands for annual pass holders or allowing offsite guests to make advance FASTPASS reservations.

Disney Dining: Good eats at House of Blues in Downtown Disney

House of Blues located on the West Side of Downtown Disney is a great location for food, drinks, and entertainment after a long day in the parks! I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Ed Whittaker who is the head chef at HOB for a food sampling of some of their most popular dishes! I sampled four appetizers, five entrees, and three desserts. Come on this food journey with me, and I will not only point out the description of the food & the perks of eating there but also my favorite foods!

Must Know Information

  • HOB is open Sun-Thur 11:30a-11:00p and Fri-Sat 11:30a-1:00a
  • Menu is created by Aaron Sanchez, a well known chef from Food Network’s series Chopped
  • Outdoor patio is open to serve drinks year round
  • Coming soon, the outdoor patio will be serving food.
  • A quick service BBQ restaurant will be opening in Jan 2014.
  • All food is made in-house on a daily basis. Only a few condiments are purchased.
  • All foods can be customized per Ed. If you’re allergic to something or want something replaced, ask to speak with the chef and he will accommodate you as well as possible.
  • HOB gives discounts for Annual Pass holders, DVC guests, Tables in Wonderland, and Military.

Appetizers

Voodoo Shrimp

Voodoo Shrimp-HOB

The house favorite, sautéed jumbo shrimp, simmered in an amber beer reduction on top of house made jalapeño cornbread. This dish is full of flavor and was my favorite appetizer dish!

Angus Sliders

Burger Sliders-HOB

Two Angus beef sliders topped with Cheddar cheese, ketchup, mustard, deep fried onion strings and pickled jalapeño peppers, served on a brioche bun. This dish was really good. The flavor of the beef was the star of this dish. Sometimes simple is better and it shows in this dish!

Basil and Pesto Flatbread Pizza

Basil and Pesto Pizza-HOB

Basil pesto& oven-dried tomatoes with a blend of cheeses. This dish was great as both a meal or a appetizer. This is a great option for vegetarians. I suggest you pair this pizza with a nice salad for a light yet filling dinner!

Steak Tacos

Steak Tacos-HOB

Three street style corn tortillas, green cabbage, fresh pico de gallo, roasted tomatillo salsa, Cotija cheese and avocado lime crème. I had these tacos with the Chargrilled citrus marinated steak. The cabbage and pico really pulled this dish together for me. I loved how all the different ingredients worked so well together.

Entrees

St. Louis Ribs

Ribs-HOB

Slow cooked rack of ribs rubbed with Adobo spice covered in smoked tomato BBQ sauce, served with BBQ baked beans and house made coleslaw. These ribs were moist and they fell right off the bone! The ribs will also be offered in the quick service restaurant located outside of the HOB (formerly the ticket window location).

Jambalaya

Jambalaya-HOB

Marinated chicken, white rice, andouille sausage, sweet peppers and roasted green onions in a spicy traditional jambalaya sauce. This was a must have for me at the HOB. I love this dish due to the bold flavors, the heat, and the spice! A must try if you enjoy creole food!

Lobster Mac and Cheese

Lobster Mac-HOB

Tender poached lobster meat in a rich creamy cheese sauce made from scratch and topped with crunchy panko bread crumbs. Not much to say about this dish other than the fact that they hit a home run! This dish is all home made and it shows. The mac and cheese doesn’t overpower the huge pieces of lobster! I will be getting this dish again.

Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf

Meatloaf-HOB

A delicious blend of savory flavors wrapped in applewood bacon and topped with house made wild mushroom sauce, served with fresh vegetables and Red Rose garlic mashed potatoes. This dish used to be served with a tomato sauce on top instead of the gravy. I am a big fan of the change to the brown gravy. This is a dish like your mamma would make…. hearty, seasoned great, and filling. If you love meatloaf, then the choice is obvious!

Adobo Rubbed Pork Chop

Pork-HOB

Citrus marinated center cut pork chop rubbed with Adobo seasoning and served on top of a black eyed pea and butternut squash picadillo. I will say that I was skeptical about this dish. I had seen it on the menu a few times but the lack of potato seemed weird to me and I didn’t want to step out of my comfort zone to try it.  Ed talked me into trying it and I am glad he did! This dish blew me away! The black eyed peas worked great with the squash for a yummy and hearty base. The pork chop had great seasoning & was juicy and full of flavor. This is my new favorite dish at the House of Blues!

Dessert

Chocolate Mousse

Chocolate-HOB

This mousse was creamy yet light. Served with a fresh cut strawberry on top.

Key Lime Pie

Key Lime-HOB

Made with fresh key lime juice and drizzled with a fresh raspberry coulis topped with fresh whipped cream. This dessert was one of my top two at the House of Blues. Its hard to find someone who does Key Lime Pie right and the HOB knows what they are doing. Great flavor, tart filling, and the creaminess of the whip cream all really pull this together for me!

Bourbon Bread Pudding

DSC_0014

Cooked with bananas and white chocolate, finished with a bourbon caramel sauce topped with fresh whipped cream. This was my favorite dessert of the night! I am a huge fan of bread pudding and this dish had everything I was looking for! A must have for me and my family!

Overview

Overall, I love the House of Blues and what they have to offer. After a long day at the park, all I want is some great food and to relax. At the HOB they know what I need and they provide it for me time after time. Quality is huge on my list when I am choosing a restaurant and I can say that I also get that at the HOB! If you decide to go, please take some time to talk to Ed and tell him that Jason from Chip and Co sent you! He has been with the HOB for 9 years now and loves what he does. He has worked beside Aaron Sanchez in LA and is an amazing chef! Overall, my choice for a place to go relax at Downtown Disney after the parks and get some amazing food is at the House Of Blues.

Disneyland’s Holiday Celebration Ends With Three Kings Day Finale

Three Kings Day at Disneyland
Three Kings Day at Disneyland

Three Kings Day at Disneyland

The Disneyland Resort is winding down their Holiday festivities by bringing the Three Kings Day celebration to Disney California Adventure Park, Friday through Monday, Jan. 3-6, 2014. The Three Kings Day tribute marks the grand finale of “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!,” a festive event that has been presented throughout the holiday season.

Three Kings Day, also known as Dia de los Reyes Magos, has been celebrated for generations by the people of Spain, Mexico, Central America and other nations, as part of the Christmas story. It commemorates the day the three kings (the magi or “wise men”) followed the star to Bethlehem bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

In addition to the “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!” activities, guests at Disney California Adventure may take photos with sculptures of the Three Kings bearing gifts and also enjoy a traditional treat known as Rosca de Reyes. Children may participate in crafts and make paper crowns with sparkling “jewels.”

  • The Three Kings Day celebration at Disney California Adventure unfolds in the Paradise Garden area, site of “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!,” which is inspired by the warmth and joyous holiday spirit of the Latino culture. The area is decorated with holly, banners and Latino cultural icons, including traditional “papel picado” hand-cut art decorations.
  • Statues of the Three Kings will be displayed in Paradise Garden. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Goofy also will appear there in “fiesta” costumes, along with The Three Caballeros: Donald Duck and Panchito from Mexico, and José Carioca from Brazil.
  • Jan. 3-6 will be the final days to enjoy the exciting “Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party.” Performing six times daily, it features the Three Caballeros on a colorful holiday float, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse transported on brightly decorated street tricycles, flag-bearers carrying papel picado banners, Mexican folklorico dancers, samba dancers and drummers, plus giant “Mojiganga” puppets, including Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.
  • At the Paradise Garden bandstand, guests may enjoy performances by traditional Mariachi, Norteño, and other regional music groups. Also at Paradise Garden, community music and folklorico troupes perform throughout the day.
  • Three Kings Day guests will enjoy the ongoing “¡Viva Navidad!” arts and crafts, storytelling and face-painting, along with a selection of unique merchandise.
  • Dining locations in Paradise Garden continue to offer popular Mexican food options in honor of the holidays. Menus feature Mexican dishes such as pozole (hearty stew), chicken mole drumettes, pescado (fish) Veracruzano, champurrado (Mexican-style hot chocolate), sweet tamales, torta al pastor (pork sandwich), buñuelos (deep-fried sweet treat) and choco flan. Traditional Rosca de Reyes bread is offered for Three Kings Day.
  • The Three Kings Day festivities add to all the holiday fun at the Disneyland Resort, including nightly snowfall on Main Street, U.S.A., “A Christmas Fantasy” parade, “it’s a small world” Holiday and Haunted Mansion Holiday attractions in Disneyland Park, plus bell-ringing carolers, special Cars Land décor and the dazzling new “World of Color – Winter Dreams” holiday water spectacular in Disney California Adventure Park.

Disney’s Frozen Passes Half a Billion In Ticket Sales

frozen logo
frozen logo

frozen logo

Frozen“will pass $500 million in worldwide ticket sales on Monday, the company said.

In the U.S. and Canada alone, the film made an estimated $28.8 million in its 5th weekend in wide release.

The total tally of ticket sales for “Frozen” is split between domestic and international sales at around $250 million for each market.

Disney’s decision to release the film at the end of November was clearly a wise decision. Especially since there was really no other animated movies being released around that time.

“Frozen” had a very strong start, making $93.6 million over the 5 day Thanksgiving weekend. “Frozen” topped the previous record-holder which was “Toy Story 2.”

Disney‘s timing for the release of “Frozen” was similar to the release of “Tangled.” “Frozen” has already passed the total domestic gross for “Tangled,” which was nearly $201 million.

If you missed it theaters don’t forget it is coming to Bluray/DVD in March!

Wishing you Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust

Epcot World Showcase Best Kept Secret – Mexico

P1130204
P1130204

Mexico

After leaving the trolls behind and learning all about Elsa and Anna’s native land Norway we head to our final country in the World Showcase, Mexico. One of my personal favorites and my kids absolutely love the Gran Fiesta Tour boat ride.

  • The pavilion was built to resemble a Mesoamerican pyramid.
  • Visitors enter the pyramid and walk through “Animales Fantasticos” art collection. It is a display of Mexican artwork throughout the lobby.
  • Illuminations: Reflection of Earth is actually run from a small office atop the pyramid.
  • El Rio del Tiempo (The River of Time) was the original boat ride through the pyramid and was replaced in 2007 with the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros.
  • La Cava del Tequila is a bar with a vast selection of tequilas, appetizers and specialty margaritas like the Avocado or Jalapeno Margarita.

The Mexican Pavilion is one of my favorite places to watch Illuminations from with a cold margarita and some churros.

What is your favorite part of Mexico? Did you enjoy our walk through the World Showcase? Did you learn some things you didn’t know before or did miss something you want to share? Comment below and let us know.
