How To Avoid Illness On Your next Disney Vacation

Avoid illness

You’ve spent months planning, saving, and counting down the days for your Disney Vacation. It promises to be a magical experience for your entire family; however, an illness can quickly rain on your Disney Parade. Here are some steps you can take on your next vacation to help make sure everyone stays healthy throughout your entire vacation.

  • Vitamins*  – If you don’t already take vitamins daily, be sure to start taking a multivitamin a few weeks prior to your departure date. Vitamin C is also another great vitamin to take as it can help improve your immune system.
  • Get Enough Sleep – A Disney vacation is so much fun; it can be tempting to wake up early to arrive when the parks open and stay up late until after the parks close. However, on days  when the parks have long hours,  this doesn’t allow for much sleep. In order to get enough sleep, you may want to consider choosing either park opening or closing. My family closes the parks down each night of our vacation, but you will very rarely find us there at park opening. In order to get enough sleep we usually arrive an hour or two after park opening.
  • Wash Your Hands – There are thousands of guests at the parks each day. With that many people, there are bound to be millions of germs covering many surfaces at the parks. In order to avoid illness, it is very important to wash your hands. Encourage children to wash hands with soap after trips to the restroom and prior to eating.
  • Hydrate – Central Florida gets quite hot, especially during the summer months. Be sure to keep your body hydrated throughout the day. You can ask for a free cup of ice water at any Disney food service location.
  • Antibacterial Gel – Sometimes, such as when you’re eating a Mickey bar while holding your  parade spot, it might not be practical to find a restroom to wash your hands.  Be sure to pack some antibacterial gel for these times.
  • Antibacterial Wipes – Germs can be found on practically every surface you touch, including items in your hotel room and even your restaurant table. Antibacterial wipes are great for keeping these items clean and keeping you healthy.
  • Allergy Medicine* – Many people, myself included, who visit Florida are allergic to the plants and trees which grow there. It can be a good idea to bring some allergy medicine with you on your vacation. Or if you’re prone to having allergy problems, like I am, you may want to consider taking your allergy medicine a few days prior to your vacation.

How do you avoid illness on your Disney vacation? We would love to hear your tips in the comments below!

*As always, be sure to consult your doctor before taking any vitamins or other medicines.

Marvel Unveils First Look at ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Guardians of the Galaxy3
Guardians of the Galaxy3

Guardians of the galaxy logo

One of my all time favorite comics is finally headed to the big screen, courtesy of Marvel Comics, and I couldn’t be more excited! It seems that the promotional campaign for the film is beginning to take full swing, because Marvel Studios has released the first official image for the film, as well as as the film’s synopsis. The film, which is slated for August 1, 2014, stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Batista, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillian, Benecio del Toro, and Vin Diesel. The film looks on expanding the Marvel universe to its cosmic side, leaving Earth and Asgard behind for an offbeat space adventure, directed by James Gunn. Check out the synopsis and still below. Synopsis:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team — the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the blanace. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

2014 Walt Disney Film Release

Here is the 2014 film release schedule:

February 28, 2014 – The Wind Rises: Jiro Horikoshi, a young boy living in a provincial town, has a dream about climbing up onto his roof and flying away in a bird-like airplane, while wearing aviator goggles. After a while, a large, monstrous ship emerges from the clouds, and drops some anthropomorphic bombs on him. His plane is destroyed, and he plummets to the ground, then wakes up. Borrowing an English-language aviation magazine, he diligently studies it with an English dictionary, then has another dream where he meets Caproni, an Italian plane designer. Caproni is surprised that a Japanese boy has intruded in what he thought was his own dream, then realizes that airplanes are a shared dream they both have. Caproni tells Jiro that he can’t fly a plane with glasses, but that building planes is better than flying them. Jiro wakes up and decides he will build planes.

March 14, 2014 – Need for Speed: The story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country race against time, one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. In a last attempt to save his struggling garage, blue-collar mechanic Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) who with his team skillfully builds and races muscle cars on the side, reluctantly partners with wealthy, arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). Just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save the business, a disastrous, unsanctioned race results in Dino framing Tobey for manslaughter.

March 21, 2014 – Muppets Most Wanted: Takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine, the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

April 4, 2014 – Captain America: The Winter Soldier: After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

April 18, 2014 – Bears: In an epic story of breathtaking scale, Disneynature’s new True Life Adventure “Bears” showcases a year in the life of a bear family as two impressionable young cubs are taught life’s most important lessons. Set against a beautiful Alaskan backdrop. Their journey begins as winter comes to an end and the bears emerge from hibernation to face the bitter cold. The world outside is exciting—but risky—as the cubs’ playful descent down the mountain carries with it a looming threat of avalanches. As the season changes from spring to summer, the brown bears must work hard to find food—ultimately feasting at a plentiful salmon run—while staying safe from rival male bears and predators, including an ever-present wolf pack.

May 16, 2014 – Million Dollar Arm:  Based on a true story, follows JB Bernstein. Bernstein is a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by his competitors. He and his partner Aash will be forced to close their business down for good if JB doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea that just might work. He thinks, “Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation?” Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout in tow, JB creates a televised, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm.” In this competition,  40,000 hopefuls compete before two 18-year-old finalists, Rinku and Dinesh, emerge as winners. JB brings the two back to the United States to train with legendary pitching coach Tom House  with the goal of getting the boys signed to a major league team.

May 30, 2014 – Maleficent: This is the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain, Maleficent, from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora. Behind-the-scenes talent includes Academy Award®–winning cinematographer Dean Semler (“Dances with Wolves,” “In the Land of Blood and Honey”), production designer Gary Freeman (“Saving Private Ryan,” “The Bourne Supremacy”), two-time Oscar® nominated costume designer Anna B. Sheppard (“Schindler’s List,” “The Pianist”) and seven-time Academy Award–winning makeup artist Rick Baker (“Planet of the Apes,” “Men in Black”).

July 18, 2014 – Planes Fire & Rescue: This is the sequel to Disney’s “Planes,” Dusty Crophopper leaves the glory of the racing world behind (at least temporarily) to lend a wing to some courageous airborne fire-fighters.

August 1, 2014 – Guardians of the Galaxy: In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of futuristic ex-cons including Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer and Groot. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance

August 8, 2014 – The Hundred-Foot Journey: Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory’s culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan’s gift as a chef and takes him under her wing

October 10, 2014 – Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day: Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows 11-year-old Alexander as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life, a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one event after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. I have wondered the same thing about my own life. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his brother, sister, mom and dad all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

November 7, 2014 – Big Hero 6: Is an upcoming 3D computer-animated superhero film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The film will be directed by Don Hall, co-director of Winnie the Pooh and Chris Williams co-director of Bolt. It will be the 54th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. Big Hero 6 will be the first Disney animated production to feature Marvel characters since The Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of Marvel Entertainment in 2009.

November 21, 2014 – McFarland: Falls in that true-story fold, telling the tale of a coach living in 1980s predominantly Latino McFarland, Calif., a small town outside of Bakersfield. The coach created a high school track team that overcame many social and physical hurdles to become champions.

December 25, 2014 – Into the Woods: It’s a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

America’s best youth soccer clubs, featuring some of the country’s elite high school players, will take the field during Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by A.S. Roma through Jan. 3, 2013 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Rated as the country’s top youth soccer tournament by a Soccer America survey, this year’s showcase features 336 boys teams and 328 girls teams.  There will be teams from Canada, Brazil, Japan, and Guatemala in attendance. Three divisions of US Soccer Federation Developmental Academy Clubs will participate, along with the US Youth Soccer National League, which has divisions in both boys and girls Showcase tournaments.

The eight-day event is expected to draw nearly 30,000 athletes, college coaches and fans to the complex, making it the leading college recruiting event in the country. About 800 college coaches, including Bobby Clark, head coach of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Soccer National Champions University of Notre Dame will be in attendance to scout. Other top schools attending include Maryland, Duke, North Carolina, Creighton, Furman, Penn State, and UCF among others.

The boys showcase (Dec. 27-30) includes teams from the No. 2 ranked FC Dallas and the No. 4 ranked Chicago Fire; while the girls showcase (Dec. 31-Jan.3) features teams from the No.1 ranked PDA (New Jersey) and the No. 3 ranked Eclipse Select (Chicago, IL). In all, over half of the top 30 clubs will have teams represented at the Showcase.

My 2014 Disney World New Years Resolutions

As another year comes to an end, I like to make it a point to take some time to reflect on all the events of the year – the good, the bad, and the Disney of course. I love vacationing at Walt Disney World, and am always looking for ways to make my vacations more enjoyable for myself and my family. So I thought this year, instead of making a traditional list of goals for 2014, I would make a list of “2014 Disney World Resolutions”:

Try Some New Eats – There are so many dining options at WDW that it’s hard to remember them all – and I certainly can’t say I have tried even half of what they have to offer – so this will be the year I will change that! New, exotic cuisines like Moroccan at Restaurant Marrakesh in Epcot, or classic German fare at Biergarten would both fit the bill. Or I could try some classic dishes with a twist – like those served up at Wolfgang Puck’s Café in Downtown Disney – 2014’s menu is shaping up to be a real palate pleaser!

Utilize the Perks – There are some great perks to staying on WDW Property – like getting to utilize the Magical Express, and Extra Magic Hours – which is one that I love, but definitely don’t use as much as I could. Extra Magic Hours allows Disney Resort guests to enter early/stay late at certain Parks on any given day. The crowds are much lighter during this hour, and it would be a great chance to experience some rides that tend to have a long wait time later in the day. Using the Extra Magic Hours perk leads me to my next Disney resolution…

Make it to A Rope DropRope Drop is the term used for the Park opening – when they start allowing people to queue up to get into the Parks. I vow to actually wake up early enough to catch a bus over to the Magic Kingdom so that I can see the “Magic Kingdom Welcome Show” – which includes singing and characters, and concludes with a countdown. I always try to make it, but this year I WILL make it to this show!

Don’t Overdo It – It’s easy to get “Disney Fever” and get overwhelmed by all the sights and sounds and rides and shows that make Disney great – and it’s natural to want to do and see it all. But it’s important to know your limits – when making your itinerary, stick to one Park a day, and plan to eat at that Park or at one of the surrounding Resort Hotels. Take some time in the afternoon to return to your Resort for a swim, or a nap, or just some quiet sunbathing – then by dinner time the sun is less harsh, you’re well rested, and ready to take on all the night time fun at the Parks! Not overdoing it brings me to my last (and possibly most important) resolution…

Relax To The Max – vacationing at a fast-paced place like WDW sometimes makes it hard to remember that vacations are supposed to be about relaxing, unwinding, and enjoying time with loved ones. So I resolve to get in more downtime at Disney this year – by hitting up the Spa for a massage and pedicure, enjoying lots of quiet pool time and plenty of leisurely meals (you know, the kind where you aren’t rushing to shove food in your mouth so you can make it back to Splash Mountain in time for your FastPass return time). Because at the end of the day – it is a VACATION, right?

So there they are – my Disney New Year’s Resolutions, I know I can complete them, and best of all – I will have fun doing so! What about you – are you planning on making any New Year’s Resolutions (Disney or otherwise?)

DIsney’s Aulani Resort – Inspired by Magical Legends and Natural Beauty of Hawaii

Aulani

Anyone who’s followed Chip and Co and more specifically my writings will know that I LOVE Disney’s Aulani Resort. Every destination has it’s pro’s and con’s of course, but for an all around amazing Hawaiian Vacation with a touch of Disney added, you can’t do better than a visit to the island of Oahu with a stop at Aulani for a few nights or a week even. Check out all that Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa has to offer with some of my other articles, and enjoy the press release from Disney on the water area’s of the resort:

The vibrant heart of the Aulani resort is the Waikolohe Valley, an exciting and colorful oasis filled with thrilling experiences, creative designs and a magical invitation for guests: Come and play!

With all the beauty and wonder of a natural Hawaiian valley, Waikolohe Valley is the recreational center of the resort. Nestled between Aulani’s two towers and flowing from the lobby down to the beachfront, it is home to pools, whirlpool spas and interactive water play areas. Waikolohe also is the name of the meandering, mischievous stream that runs through this valley.

Waikolohe, which is Hawaiian for “mischievous water,” offers a playful nod to some refreshing surprises. Many of those surprises will unfold along the banks of a lazy river which carries tube-riding adventurers on a journey of discovery through the valley’s eye-catching lava outcropping called Pu’u Kilo.

In Waikolohe Stream, water slides twist in and out of the rock formations, taking guests on a ride through caverns and past “mischievous” fountain springs that surprise explorers with a bit of “refreshment.” Occasional hot springs blow off a little steam, too. In upholding a Disney and Hawaiian tradition that will play out in every aspect of the resort, there will be more to these lava formations than meets the eye.

A highlight of the Valley for the young and young-at-heart will be the interactive water play area known as the Menehune Bridge. The legendary Hawaiian Menehune (pronounced men-neh-who-neh), are said to be shy, diminutive beings who are gifted craftspeople, adept at building everything from temples to canoes. The Menehune Bridge brings the legend to life, featuring Menehune as statues … or perhaps frozen in plain sight in the act of cavorting, spilling and shooting water to the delight of even Aulani’s littlest guests.

Waikolohe Valley is also home to the Waikolohe and Wailana Pools, the private poolside cabanas, four whirlpool spas and Rainbow Reef snorkel lagoon. Amenities within the Valley include the Lava Shack for quick food service, and the Papalua Shave Ice station.

Ka Maka Landing, the latest enhancement to the resort, offers a delightfully themed family pool, a kids’ splash zone and a new dining location. Ka Maka Grotto, a mystical infinity pool and spa sits along the edge of Ka Maka Landing while Keiki Cove offers a fun place to splash around for Aulani’s littlest guests.

In addition to reflecting the legends of Hawaii, the Waikolohe Valley magically mimics the Hawaiian landscape: wetter and more forested at the high end nearer the mountains, drier and more open as it approaches the sea.

With lava formations, hot springs that blow off steam and misty caverns, the Waikolohe Valley landscape was designed by Disney Imagineers to appear as if it has been here for many, many years.

“What you can see right along this very stretch of coastline on Oahu is that, as the lava flowed hundreds of thousands of years ago, it cooled rapidly as it hit the sea, piling up on itself and creating fantastic shapes,” said Imagineer Joe Rohde, who grew up on Oahu. “That’s the inspiration behind the rock formations that shape our recreation area.

“We wanted the rock you come across here to appear to be the very rock that would be coming up out of the ground, as if it was real, only ours will be ever-so-slightly magical.”
