Top 10 Tips For Bringing a Baby or Toddler to Disneyland

Top 10 Baby Tips 414x5001
Top 10 Baby Tips 414x5001

Top 10 Baby Tips

One of the most common questions people ask me is, “What age should my child be before I take them to Disneyland for the first time?” I typically say their little one probably won’t enjoy it as much as they want them to until around 3, but what if you don’t want to wait that long? What happens when your child becomes children? Do you now make your oldest wait several years until their younger sibling is old enough to make another trip? Not only can bringing a baby or toddler to Disneyland be completely manageable, it can be a blast! Here are my top 10 tips to having an enjoyable Disneyland Resort vacation with a baby or toddler:

  1. Baby Care Centers: This one is common to most people, so I will list it first. Disneyland offers two baby centers on the resort. One is in Disneyland at the end of Main Street next to the first aid station, and the other is in Disney California Adventure next to the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain in Pacific Wharf. These centers include a nursing room with chairs, changing room with tables, feeding area with highchairs, kitchen with microwave and sink, and a small shop where you can purchase formula, baby food, juice, diapers, wipes, etc. This is an especially nice area to bring your baby for a break in the summer since it’s always nicely air conditioned. In addition to the baby care centers, there is a baby changing station in every restroom in the park.

  2. Keeping Them Safe: The early walking/toddler years can sometimes be the most worrisome time when taking your child to Disneyland because of their propensity to wander off. Take these precautions: A. Take a head to toe picture each morning before you head into the parks. If you get separated, this will aid cast members in quickly locating your child. B. Have your contact number attached somewhere on their body. Some ideas are disposable ID bracelets (sold on Amazon), write in Sharpie on their hand and cover it with New Skin so it won’t wash off, or write on a piece of duct tape and tape it somewhere on their clothes. C. If your toddler can understand, stop a cast member on your first day into the park and ask them to show your little one their badge. Tell your child to find someone wearing the same kind of badge if they get lost. Every single cast member wears one and it is a great way for them to know where/who to go to if they can’t find you.
  3. Getting Around: If you and your baby can tolerate a baby carrier, bring one. Our youngest was an infant the first time we took her, and it is much easier to get around with a Moby Wrap or Baby Bjorn than a stroller. If you want a stroller, park it in a central “stroller lot” location and come back to it during the day if you need it. Speaking of Strollers, I hate renting strollers at the park. The chances of you park hopping are much greater at Disneyland Resort since the gates to the two parks are mere feet from one another. However, you can’t cross over between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in a rented stroller. You have to turn it back in before leaving and then rent a new one at the next park. Also, you can’t fold them up and take them on the train (see tip #4) or monorail. You have to get off at the same stop where you boarded to get your stroller back. And finally, everyone and their uncle has the same one. You will spend half of your day looking for it among the other hundred just like it in the stroller lots. My personal favorite stroller that we had for the park was a bright red Chicco Liteway Plus. It is a sturdy, but lightweight, compact, fold up stroller that lasted us over five years. If we have another baby, I will be buying a new one. We got more than our money’s worth out of this stroller at Disneyland alone. EDIT: I have been corrected about their rule regarding taking a stroller from one park to another, and I am happy to say I was misinformed! You can in fact take rented strollers between the two parks, but you will be stopped if you try to take them into Downtown Disney. Good to know! I was also told that you can take them on the train, but due to their strong, bulky build, I would still much prefer the stroller I suggested.
  4. Great Nap Spots: Sometimes you can’t leave the park for a nap, and there is no better way to ruin the rest of your day than a sleep deprived baby or toddler. If you can’t manage to get back to your hotel, here are the go-to places we have used: Disneyland: Disneyland Railroad. This ride is perfect since you can ride it as long as you want. The motion of the train often helps get them to sleep as well. Disney California Adventure: The Disney Animation Building. This is the building in Hollywood Land where you will find Turtle Talk With Crush, Animation Academy, and Sorcerer’s Workshop. The Animation Courtyard you walk into when you first enter the building is large, dark, carpeted, and air conditioned. Grab a spot along one of the walls and get comfy.
  5. Eating: Bring lots of snacks! Regardless of where you eat, table service or quick service, waiting for your food to be served or waiting in line, your little one will have to wait for their food. Parents often know this is a prime melt-down period. Be prepared to give them some instant gratification to ease the wait. If your baby is still on formula, bring your own bottles of water into the park. Formula is expensive enough without the added premium price of on-park bottled water. If you’re breastfeeding, keep yourself hydrated. Every restaurant offers free water and there are plenty of water fountains around. If you prefer bottled water… see previous comment about bringing in your own bottled water.
  6. Character Meals: Speaking of eating, character meals are some of the most popular eating experiences on the resort. However, the costumed characters can cause a mixed reaction in both babies and toddlers. Leave it to the pros and Disneyland to be completely prepared for this. If you’re unsure about how your little one will react, ask your server which direction the characters will come from when they make their way to your table, and then make sure your baby/toddler faces that direction so they’re not surprised. You will notice the costumed characters will give your child a bit of a distance before approaching. They will gauge their and your reaction to see if it’s okay for them to come closer. If they sense they aren’t welcome, they will just wave. If you have older kids in your party, they will wave them over.
  7. Rides: You will be pleasantly surprised when you realize how many rides your babies can go on. This is one of the reasons why Disneyland is my favorite place to take our kids. Babies can go on any ride where there’s no height restriction, and there are a lot of them. If everyone else still wants to ride the thrill rides, request a “Rider Switch” pass. If you have never heard of it, this is how it works: Your entire party goes to the cast member at the entrance of the ride and requests a Rider Switch. One adult stays with the younger passenger/s while the rest of the party gets in line and rides. When they come back, the adult who waited can take one other person and get into a shorter line (most often the Fastpass line) and get on the ride with a much shorter wait. The first party to ride can still use Fastpasses and take advantage of a Rider Switch. The Rider Switch is good for the whole day, so if your little one can’t wait for the second group in your party to ride, you can just come back later. In our family’s situation, we have two daughters, and one of them is still too short to ride the bigger rides. When we use the Rider Switch, our older daughter gets to ride back to back. There is typically a smaller ride nearby that your little one can ride back to back during this time as well.
  8. Take Advantage of the Shows and Parades: Babies and toddlers often like visual stimulation more than the rides! Shows and parades also offer much needed breaks as well. Take advantage of them!
  9. Lower Your Expectations and Be Flexible: Every kid has a different tolerance level, but no baby or toddler is going to last from the start of Magic Morning hours to closing. Even more so, they won’t be able to go all day, several days in a row. Don’t hesitate to make one of the days of your stay a pool day. Are they melting down after dinner? Perhaps skip Fantasmic or World of Color that night and go see it the next night. You will need to take lots of breaks each day, go at a slower pace, and be prepared to cut the day short if your little one has had enough. A good adage to remember, your party will only be as happy as your youngest member.
  10. Have Fun and Take it Slow: Don’t be overly concerned with the fact they may be too young to remember this particular trip in the future. Take lots of pictures and make lots of memories that YOU will remember so you can share them with your child when they get older. As a parent, you know how quickly this time flies. Cherish and savor it!

New Planes: Fire & Rescue Trailer Now Available

Cad Spinner
Cad Spinner

Cad Spinner

Planes: Fire & Rescue” is a new comedy-adventure about second chances, featuring a dynamic crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from raging wildfire. When world famous air racer Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting. Dusty joins forces with veteran fire and rescue helicopter Blade Ranger and his courageous team, including spirited super scooper Dipper (voice of Julie Bowen), heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter, ex-military transport Cabbie and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero. Directed by Bobs Gannaway (“Secret of the Wings”).

I thought you might want to learn a few things about some of the new characters. Cad Spinner (pictured above) is Park Superintendent. He is obviously a luxury S.U.V. who is better suited for the country club and not the country. Self-Centered and passionate about profits, Cad diverts a big chunk of the firefighters’ budget to his lodge restoration project. Though completely turned off by dirt, he is not opposed to playing dirty to get his way.

Maru

Maru is the mechanic tug at the Piston Park Air Attack base. Friendly with a sarcastic sense of humor, he’s been around a long time and has the cluttered hangar to prove it. With no budget for new parts, Maru’s many shelves of old parts and machinery come in quite handy. The re-purposing pro’s motto? “It’s better than New”. I like him already!

Mayday

Mayday has been Propwash Junction’s fire & rescue truck for…..ever. He is always rarin’ to go, but he’s lost a little speed over the years. Plus his hoses are leaky and he can’t see much without his glasses. Propwash Junctions is growing fast thanks to resident-turned-big-time-racer Dusty, so Mayday might be in over his headlights.

Check out the trailer:

“Planes: Fire & Rescue” hits theaters in 3D on July 18, 2014.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Sets a Record

Captain America The Winter Soldier

Captain America The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is apparently very popular. The movie has set a record this month already, it had the biggest April domestic release ever! The movie debuted with $96.2 million.

“The Winter Soldier” made $9.6 million of its U.S. profits from 346 theaters showing the movie in an enhanced resolution format. It debuted internationally on 278 Imax screens, pulling in $6.5 million, $4 million of which came from China.

‘‘We looked at the possibility of creating separation from the other summer tentpoles,’’ said Dave Hollis, head of worldwide theatrical distribution for Disney. ‘‘There was an opportunity. We have the second Marvel film coming at the end of the summer in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ We wanted to start and end the summer and take advantage of this holiday. In the next month or so we’ll have the benefit of spring break.’

Have you seen it?

Disney DIY – Easter Fun!

EasterEggs
EasterEggs

EasterMickeyMinnie

Can you believe it’s APRIL? I can’t – seriously. It’s crazy – the snow is melting, the sun is shining (sometimes), Spring is coming, and Easter is just around the corner! My family and I have spent many happy Easters at Walt Disney World – enjoying delicious food, togetherness, and fun! That’s what Easter is all about for us – we aren’t too religious, so we like to make it about enjoying time with family, and celebrating togetherness! Celebrations always include some kind of meal, and I must admit – they also usually include some kind of Disney too – whether it be in our Easter baskets or on our plates. Here are some fun and easy ways you can add some Disney DIY to your Easter celebrations:

EasterEggs

Turn your egg into an adorable Mickey Or Minnie Mouse

You’ll need:

Hardboiled white egg (or wooden egg), painted black

Ruler

Scissors

Cardboard tissue tube (1 1/2 inches or so in diameter)

Black craft paint and paintbrush

Strip of red craft paper (1 1/2 – by 5-inches)

2 small white buttons (about 3/8 inch in diameter)

Glue dots

Template for Mickey Mouse Easter Egg

Cardstock, black and white

Instructions:

1. Cut a 2-inch section from the cardboard tissue tube, paint it black, and let it to dry.
Note: Another option is to make your own tube by rolling up and stapling a strip of black cardstock.

2. For Mickey’s shorts, wrap the red craft paper around the bottom of the tube and glue the ends together to hold them in place. Glue the white buttons to the front of the shorts.

3. Place the painted egg atop the tube, with the narrower end down. Then print the template on a sheet of white cardstock. Cut out the Mickey face and use glue dots to stick the upper portion to the front of the egg, but allow the chin to extend slightly over the outer tube.

4. For the finishing touch, use the ear template piece to cut out a pair of Mickey ears from black cardstock. Fold the ear tabs, as shown, and glue them to the top of the egg so that the ears stand upright.

Disney is Remaking Pete’s Dragon

petes dragon
petes dragon

petes dragon

Pete’s Dragon was made all the way back in 1977. Can you believe it’s that old? With the passing of Mickey Rooney yesterday this probably isn’t the best time for them to be working on a remake of this classic tale.

News is that David Lowery is in talks to direct the new remake. You might be thinking that as an odd choice since his last movie was about children fending for themselves in the Pioneer but it really is a perfect fit if you think about the what Pete’s Dragon is about.

This classic movie starred some of the greats like, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons, and of course Mickey Rooney. He was a great talent and will truly be missed.

It isn’t known yet whether Pete’s Dragon will be Lowery’s next movie or if he will start work on another film. When we get more details we will share them.

Disney World Date Night: Magic Kingdom Edition

WDWPreschool2 1024x680
WDWPreschool2 1024x680

hands

There’s nothing more fun that a good old fashioned Disney date night!  Getting all gussied up, walking hand in hand, butterflies in your stomach waiting for THE kiss!  Sigh!  I love that feeling!  I can’t imagine a better place than Disney World to go on a date!  First date or millionth date, Disney has created the mood, why not soak it up on a fabulous date night?  Let’s take a look at a couple of date options for the Magic Kingdom!

The Romantics:

Dinner

Tony’s Town Square is my recommendation for the hopeless romantic!  If spaghetti noodle kisses are your thing, then you’re in the right place!  Tony’s Town Square offers a variety of Italian dishes and provides a venue that is perfect for the lovely bella notte.  On you’re way out, stop and see Lady and the Tramp’s love forever set in cement just outside the restaurant.

What to do

Romance is what it is all about, take advantage of close seating in some of the most lovely rides available.  Cozy up as you take flight with Dumbo, kiss the girl as you travel under the sea on Voyage of the Little Mermaid, and for heaven’s sake, don’t miss out on a ride on Prince Charming Regal Carousel!  Whatever you do, make it about being together!  Enjoy every ride

The Perfect Ending

You can’t be a romantic and skip out on the fireworks!  Find a spot to sit or stand and hold hands as the fireworks of Wishes! Nighttime Spectacular cascades shimmers of magic over the Magic Kingdom.  Grab a dessert to share and you’ve pretty much got the perfect ending to a romantic night in the Magic Kingdom.  Of course, if you’re on the insider loop like me, then you’ll probably let the crowds rushing toward the exit die down as you enjoy Cinderella Castle and the Goodnight Kiss.  Then you’ll probably do a bit of Shopping in the Emporium and probably grab a coffee from the Main Street Bakery.  But that’s just me…

The Thrill Seekers

Dinner

Thrill seekers probably aren’t as worried about food as they are about having fun!  I won’t go so far as to say that the Magic Kingdom is the best spot for the thrill seeker, but I do think there are some exciting things to do!  The thrill seekers probably will grab dinner on the fly.  ADRs?  No thanks!  The true thrill seekers aren’t planners, they’ll see what the night brings.  Maybe a quick Turkey leg while rushing off to Big Thunder Mountain.  Maybe a last minute, impossible to grab table service with NO reservations, maybe just a series of desserts.  When you seek a thrill, the journey is the adventure!

What to do

Of course you’ll want to take on the thrills of the Magic Kingdom.  Those thrills can be found in the mountains:  Big Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain, and Splash Mountain.  Soon, you’ll be able to defy the rails of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train!  Maybe you’ll take on the pirate filled seas with Captain Jack Sparrow and crew over at Pirates of the Caribbean!  Maybe you’ll seek some spooky thrills over at the Haunted Mansion. Whatever the case, you adrenaline junkies will find your kicks in the Magic Kingdom!

The Perfect Ending

Thrill seekers want a challenge.  To you I offer these suggestions.

a.) Skip the crowds of the parades and fireworks and ride until you drop.  See if you can do all of the coasters in the kingdom before the night is over.

b.)  A  little healthy competition isn’t all that bad!  Why not challenge your date to a couple of thrills…See who wins big!  See who can ride space mountain the most times in a row.  Have a food challenge, see who can down the most __________ (I’d totally take the Mickey Bar challenge…).

The Kids at Heart

 Dinner

The kid at heart will want to take advantage of Character Dinning and perfectly posed pictures.  For the magic Kingdom, you’ll have a couple of choices.  You can go fully regal and dine in Cinderella Castle at Cinderella’s Royal Table, you can eat in the company of Belle and Beast at Be Our Guest, or you can let your true kid side show by enjoying a fun meal with Pooh and the Hundred Acre crew at the Crystal Palace.  Either way, bring a camera and your true childhood spirit!  The two of you are guaranteed to have a wonderful time.

What to do

What’s the best place for a kid to hang out?  I don’t think you can get any closer to childhood than the Magic Kingdom.  Complete with 7 lands to explore, you’ll probably find your inner kid tucked into every single detail.  Enjoy a romp through Fantasyland, eat cotton candy as you wait to meet a character, have two desserts.  Stay up till the park closes and catch every single moment of the fun!  Buy a silly hat, commemorate the night with a few goofy pictures. The kingdom is yours!

The Perfect Ending

A true kid knows the sense of wonder and amazement that comes with a parade.  There’s something about watching the twinkling lights of the Main Street Electrical Parade (especially when you have a genuine light up toy).  You can’t miss out on the whimsy of the parade and you can’t miss out on the wonder of Wishes!  You simply have to ride the last right, just one last time.  Make a made dash for Big Thunder Mountain.  Squeeze in an extra ice cream.  Be carefree and enjoy your time with the your sweetie!
