A First Timer’s Guide: Top Things You Need to Know About Disney California Adventure

California
California

California

Disney California Adventure is the sister park to Disneyland. Opened in 2001, this park is themed after the history and culture of California while still including Disney magic. If you will be visiting the Disneyland Resort, this park is not to be missed! Here are some things you need to know for your first visit:

  • Two EntrancesDisney California Adventure has two entrances to the park. There’s the main entrance which is across from the entrance to Disneyland. Then there’s an entrance inside Disney’s Grand Californian Resort and Spa, one of the Disneyland Resort hotels. You don’t have to be a resort guest in order to use the second entrance but you do need to have park tickets.
  • Oswald-You can meet a pretty unique character in Disney California Adventure park. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was one of the first cartoon characters created by Walt Disney. Walt lost the rights to Oswald back in 1928 but Disney got them back a couple of years ago. You can meet Oswald on Buena Vista Street (the main street of California Adventure).
  • “Local” Characters-California Adventure is also home to the citizens of Buena Vista Street. When you enter the park, you step back in time to Los Angeles of the 20’s and 30’s. With that time hop comes characters from that era as well. You can meet such character as Donna and her dog, Lady, who love to spread happiness to everyone they meet. Officer Calvin Blue might liven your day by writing you a fake ticket. And Molly the Messenger is a delightful bicycle-riding messenger who loves making people happy by delivering them messages.
  • Buena Vista Street Entertainment-Other entertainment that’s unique to Disney California Adventure includes the Red Car Trolley News Boys and the musical group, Five & Dime. Both groups perform daily on Buena Vista Street. The Red Car Trolley News Boys bring the latest headlines and engage their audience with fun songs of the 20’s and 30’s. Five & Dime jazzes things up for their audience in Carthay Circle with their lead singer, Dime.
  • Alcohol-Disney California Adventure is the only park at the Disneyland Resort where alcohol is served (with the exception of Club 33 in Disneyland). From martinis to beer, there’s something for everyone at this park (so long as they’re 21 or older of course!).
  • Parade View-A great spot to watch the afternoon parade in California Adventure is Carthay Circle. You’ll have a great view of the parade and be close to the exit if you want to leave the park when it’s over.
  • Boardwalk Games-Check out the Paradise Pier Midway for fun pay-per-play boardwalk games. The games incorporate Disney and Pixar characters and the prizes are pretty cute too! At ‘Goofy About Fishin’ everyone wins a prize. ‘Bullseye Stallion Stampede’ is a horse race and the fastest horse wins a prize. ‘Casey at Bat’ is a pretty difficult game and only those who win get a prize. The final game, ‘Dumbo Bucket Brigade’, is a water pistol game and the first fireman to the top of his ladder wins a prize.
  • Character Drawing at Animation Academy-At Animation Academy in Hollywood Land, you can enjoy a unique opportunity to draw your own Disney character sketch. You’ll receive step by step instructions on how to draw some of your favorite characters under the guidance of a Disney artist. This is a great souvenir to take home (and it’s free!).
  • World of Color-World of Color is a dazzling nighttime water show that takes place nightly on Paradise Bay. The show projects images from beloved Disney and Disney•Pixar films onto a 19,000 square-foot water “screen” created by nearly 1,200 fountains shooting water up to 200 feet in the air. Music accompanies the images as well as fire, fountain, fog and laser effects. There are three versions of the show. The original ‘World of Color’, ‘World of Color-Winter Dreams’ which is shown during the holidays, and ‘World of Color-Celebrate!’ which is being shown during the 60th anniversary celebration. This is a spectacular show that you need to see when visiting California Adventure. Be sure to get fastpasses early in the day or make a World of Color dining reservation for great seating.

Top 10 Things To See & Do at Disney World in the Summer

As Olaf would say, “Winter’s a good time to stay in and cuddle, but put me in summer and I’ll be a…happy snowman!”  Can’t argue with that logic, because summer is the quintessential time to go to Disney World, and Disney always makes me happy.  Sure, the Florida heat and humidity will test even a cactus but there’s a reason why families and travelers flock to Disney World every summer.  There are so many amazing things to see and do – for adults and kids, couples and singles, and families and friends alike.  Here is our top 10 list of things to see and do at Disney World in the summer:

  1. Independence Day Festivities.  Fourth of July festivities at Disney are always memorable, and it’s easy to see why – from the dazzling fireworks spectacular at Magic Kingdom to stirring performances at the American Pavilion at Epcot to special events at Hollywood Studios, there are so many ways to celebrate a hallmark of our country’s history.
  2. Blizzard Beach & Typhoon Lagoon.  Orlando is not short on water parks, but Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon stand out among the competition.  Blizzard Beach used to be a ski resort but melted into a water wonderland with Mount Gushmore as its centerpiece.  There are plenty of attractions to beat that Florida heat, including the not-for-the-faint-of-heart Summit Plummet, which is known as one of the tallest and fastest free fall water slides in the world.  Or for some friendly competition, there’s the Toboggan Racers, where guests lie on their stomach on a toboggan mat and slide down to the finish line.  You can also head over to Typhoon Lagoon, a water park that was born out of a major typhoon that tossed palm trees and boats and toys all over Mount Mayday.  For the little tots under 48 inches, there’s Ketchakiddee Creek, filled with activity areas, water slides, fountains and waterfalls.  Or, for a truly unique experience, you can head over to Shark Reef and snorkel with, gasp!, sharks, stingrays and tropical fish.
  3. Sounds Like Summer Concert Series.  Right at the America Gardens Theater, cover bands play give a salute to some of the most iconic groups in music.  Although the dates and acts have not been announced for 2016, you can get a flavor for what might be in store by looking at some of the groups that performed last year – they covered Journey, U2, Billy Joel, Bee Gees, the Eagles, and more.
  4. New dining experiences.  I don’t know about you, but I am a huge fan of cooking shows.  I like to picture myself cutting up a mean mise-and-place, butter poaching lobsters, or baking a divinely delicious dark chocolate souffle – in just 60 minutes! – but then reality sets in and I realize that my skills are probably not quite up to par.  So I just leave the real cooking to the pros like Art Smith, who is bringing his yummy Southern cuisine to Disney Springs this summer with Homecoming: Florida Kitchen and Southern Shine.  There’s also the world famous Chef Rick Bayless, who is opening Frontera Fresco in Disney Springs.  I’ll be first in line to try that mole!
  5. Frozen Summer Fun.  Disney has not yet provided confirmation on whether Frozen Summer Fun is returning in 2016 – but we’re hoping this fun summer event at Hollywood Studios comes back!  For the last two years, Hollywood Studios has provided special Frozen-themed activities, including icy makeovers at the Ice Palace Boutique, Frozen dessert events, special fireworks, parades, and other entertainment.
  6. Disney Soccer Academy.  At ESPN Wide World of Sports, for select dates in June and July, Disney will host 4-day or 5-day soccer summer camps for kids and teens ages 5-18.  Participants can play alongside some serious soccer superstars and the program is done with a touch of Disney magic, of course!
  7. USA Jump Rope National Championship.  Yes, this is a legit thing, and I could not be more excited about it!  Marvel over the amazing skills of jump ropers across the country at the USA Jump Rope National Championship being held right at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.  The event runs from June 27-July 1 this year.
  8. Heat-defying treats.  There are many ways that people cope with the Florida heat.  Some choose to ride Carousel of Progress over and over, some will take mid-day breaks to get away from the parks when temperatures are at their peak, and some cool off with frozen desserts.  I am a big fan of the third option, and why not?  There are plenty to choose from!  The classic Dole Whip is equal parts sweet and citrusy, cold and refreshing.  Or, you can opt for the standard ice cream delights from the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor.  If you want to go all out, you can bring your appetite (and maybe one or two other people) and try the Kitchen Sink at Beaches and Cream.  And there’s also my personal favorite, the warm brioche ice cream sandwich (or croque glaces, if you want to go fancy) at L’Artisan des Glaces at the France Pavilion at Epcot.  Don’t miss these fantastic offerings, as there’s no better time to enjoy them than in the summer!
  9. Pools & water fun at the resorts.  One of the things that Disney does really well is to create elaborately themed pools and slides for resort guests.  Whether you are at Coronado Springs’ Lost City of Cibola Pool, or the Polynesian’s Lava Pool, or the Art of Animation’s Big Blue Pool, you will find a welcome break against the heat and park crowds.  One resort deserving special mention is the Beach & Yacht Club’s Stormalong Bay, which in this writer’s humble opinion is the best that Disney has to offer.  There’s sand bottom pools, a lazy river, whirlpool area, and more – with all of that, I can just keep swimming, just keep swimming…
  10. Recreational activities.  If you’re looking for more unique water activities, Disney has plenty of options as well.  Who says parasailing should just be when you are vacationing on some fancy island?  You can do that right at the Contemporary Resort, at Sammy Duvall’s Watersports Centre.  This facility provides some serious aquatic fun, from water skiing to wakeboarding to renting your own personal watercaft.  Don’t worry if you’re not a pro at any of these – Sammy Duvall’s has experienced trainers who will ensure your safety and enjoyment.

With that, I turn it over to you: what is your favorite thing to see and do at Disney in the summer?  Sound off in the comments below!

Luigis
Luigis

Although the Mad T Party maybe be leaving us at the end of March, we will also be welcoming Luigi’s dance party on March 7th at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort. In a new attraction, called Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, the storage yard of Casa Della Tires will be transformed into a dance floor where guests ride with Luigi and his cousins in stylish roadsters (complete with Italian white-rimmed tires, of course) as they dance to lively Italian music! Each car will move and spin in different ways and have its own individual personality, creating a unique ride experience almost every time you ride.

Luigis

This new attraction is an all new ride that replaced Luigi’s Flying Tires, which closed in February 2015. Luigi’s Rollickin Roadsters is the first new ride to open in Cars Land since its initial opening day in June 2012. This ride will be just a short distance walk from Cars Land’s biggest attraction, Radiator Springs Racers, near the pathway between Cars Land and Hollywood Land. We can’t wait to see this newest addition to Radiator Springs!

Local Brooklyn Ice Creamery coming to Walt Disney World!

2016 02 21 14.42.36
2016 02 21 14.42.36

SS

A local Brooklyn New York ice cream shop may be heading to Walt Disney World!

In 2011 husband and wife team created The Ample Hills Creamery. It is a big success in New York, all the ice cream is hand-made, as well as all the add ons, the milk comes from grass-fed cows and the sugar is organic!

To the couples surprise, Bob Iger, chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company fell in love with it! Iger became the couples mentor and advisor. Ample Hills then secured a license to produce a Star Wars themed ice cream. The ice cream comes in two flavors, the Dark Side (an ultra-dark chocolate ice cream with espresso fudge brownies, cocoa crispies, and white chocolate pearls to represent the light still hiding in the dark, waiting to burst through) and Light Side (a bright marshmallow ice cream with homemade crispie clusters, as well as a smattering of handmade cocoa crispies to represent the dark side still lurking within the light).

We all know there is a new ice cream shop that will replace Seashore Sweets on the Boardwalk in Walt Disney World, many people are saying Ample Hill Creamery ice cream may be going there! This ice cream would be a large improvement to what is there now! The ice cream shop is currently being built on what was previously ESPN Club arcade, right next door to the BoardWalk Bakery. (sorry photo above was the closest one we had)

There has been no official announcement therefore this is all just hear-say!

Fantastic Disney Inspired Duvet Covers and Blankets

Mickey Duvet
Mickey Duvet

Mickey Duvet

As a Disney lover with a king sized bed, I’m constantly jealous of those who can easily find Disney themed bedspreads for their bedrooms. Sure king size ones exist, but they are hard to find, and often sold out. Etsy designer foreverwars makes many fantastic Disney and Star Wars inspired duvet covers that are just divine from twin to king size!

Not only are these microfiber covers beautiful, they are hand sewn and meticulously crafted. These lightweight duvet covers vividly feature our favorite Disney and Star Wars designs with a light cream reverse side. A durable and hidden zipper offers simple assembly for easy care, and of course rotating with other fun designs. The best part though is they are available in twin, full, queen and KING size duvets. There’s even matching throw pillows!

Excited yet? So am I, check out lots of her fun designs below!

Anyone else trying to decide how they want to redecorate their room, like I am?

Top 10 Disney World Restaurants I have to Eat at on Every Trip

2016 01 18 12.31.44
2016 01 18 12.31.44

GG

Disney World has so many amazing dining choices, right around 300 if you count everywhere that you can get something to eat, spread throughout the parks, resorts, and Disney Springs. Each and everything that I have eaten on Disney property has been delicious. I personally love to try to new things, and on each trip my family tries to add at least one new dining location to our list. There are, however, some restaurants, both quick service and table service that we must eat at on every long trip.

So here are the top ten Disney World restaurants that I have to eat at on every trip!

  • Raglan Road – This Irish pub may just be my favorite restaurant on property! You can find this charming bit of Ireland in the Landing section of Disney Springs. Here you can enjoy Irish classics, like Sheppard’s pie, bangers and mash, and fish and chips, but with a twist. While you dine enjoy live entertainment, Irish dancers will dance throughout the evening in each of the dining rooms, and live bands take the stage to share their Irish music. Finish off your meal with a sweet treat – my favorite is the bread and butter pudding. Yum.
  • Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue – Alright, this one is a dinner show, but you get served delicious food, so it’s a restaurant. Enjoy dinner and a show put on by the Pioneer Hall Players at this Fort Wilderness staple. Dine on all you can eat fried chicken and ribs with sides like cowboy beans, mashed potatoes, corn, and salad. The show itself features songs, dancing, and jokes. Dessert is part of the show, too! Servers will dance on stage with the Players before bringing your strawberry shortcake to your table. I absolutely love this show and the Fort Wilderness resort.
  • Sunshine Seasons – Whether you’re looking for a quick, but great meal or snack while you’re in Future World at Epcot Sunshine Seasons is the place to get it. With entrees like slow roasted pork chops, spicy fish tacos, and giant sandwiches you can’t go wrong. There is also a bakery case full of delicious sweet treats like cookies, cake, and carrot cake cupcakes. My favorite thing to get here is only served in the fall – the pumpkin soup. If you’re at Disney in the fall, you have to try to this soup! And no matter when you’re there, check out Sunshine Seasons.
  • Liberty Tree Tavern – Here you are transported back in time to a colonial America. Each room is decorated to represent a different historical figure from this time. The little details and the theme are great, and so is the food! At lunch you can enjoy entrees like pot roast, pasta with chicken, fish and chips, cheeseburgers, or the Pilgrim’s Feast. Finish off your meal with seasonal fruit cobbler, Johnny Appleseed’s Tart or Boston cream pie. My favorite meal to eat here, though is dinner. Dinner is an all you can eat Thanksgiving style feast with three meats, and all of the sides you expect at Thanksgiving. Finish the meal off with Johnny Appleseed’s Tart – a tasty combination of pastry, cinnamon, and Craisins served warm with ice cream.
  • Flame Tree Barbecue – This is not your standard quick service restaurant. Here you can get St. Louis style ribs, a half chicken, pulled pork sandwiches, salads and more. Everything that I have tried here has been delicious. Upon first glance, it doesn’t look like there is much seating here, but if you keep walking down the path you will be in for a treat. All seating is outside, but it covered, and some offers your great views of the park. If you like barbecue and are looking for a quick and satisfying meal next time you’re at Animal Kingdom, check this place out.
  • Biergarten – I love German food! And if you do too, then you should check this place out. Travel to the square of a Bavarian town where you can dine on authentic and delicious food while you’re entertained by authentic German music. One of the best things about Biergarten is that it is a buffet. Disney buffets are great because they offer so many delicious options and all for a great price. It is also pretty easy to get a reservation here, especially for lunch.
  • Sci-Fi Dine In Theater – Did you go to the drive-in when you were growing up? I still go all of time, and I love the experience of sitting in your car and watching a movie, all while getting to dine on your own food if you desire. At Sci-Fi Dine In you can enjoy a delicious meal all from the comfort in a classic convertible. Dig into burgers, hot dogs, ribs, or other delicious American classics. Finish your meal with a sweet treat like the warm glazed donut with ice cream, the house made candy bar, or an ice cold milkshake. Check it out next time you’re at Hollywood Studios, it’s worth it.
  • Garden Grill – This one is a combination of some many great things! First, it’s located on the top floor of the Land Pavilion and while you dine you will get to look into the Living with the Land attraction. Second, the restaurant slowly rotates so that everyone gets the chance to see everything. Third, it is a character meal! You can meet farmer Mickey, Pluto, Chip, and Dale. Lastly, it is all you can eat and some of the food is harvested right downstairs! All three meals of the day are served here you at all three you can enjoy delicious eats. Classic breakfast items like eggs, sausage, Mickey waffles, and sticky bun bake. Lunch and dinner showcase meats, salad, fries, mac and cheese, potatoes and shortcake for dessert. Now that all three meals are being served there are even more opportunities to check the Garden Grill out.
  • Chef Mickey’s – Hang out with Mickey and the gang in their chef gear for breakfast or dinner! Dine on all of your breakfast and dinner favorites at this delicious buffet. Not only do you get to eat as much delicious food as you want, and meet Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Pluto, but you also get to see the monorail whiz by overhead. This reservation is a hard one to score, so if you get the opportunity to dine here, do it!
  • Columbia Harbour House – This quick service location in Liberty Square is a great place to quick and healthy bite to eat. Enjoy lobsters rolls, tuna sandwiches, and salads or if you’re looking for something not as healthy there are fried fish and shrimp plates as well chicken nuggets. You can also enjoy chili and clam chowder, which are great on those slightly cooler winter days. Check it out next time you’re looking for a bite to eat a Magic Kingdom.

The Disneyland Resort is an amazing, Family Vacation Destination

DL Family
DL Family

DL Family

Walt Disney wanted to provide a place where adults and children, families and friends of all ages could have fun together. On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened and Walt’s dream became a reality. Today, that dream has evolved into a national treasure.

The Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration, which began in 2015, honors the 60th anniversary of the Happiest Place on Earth.

Through six magical decades, the original 18 attractions that comprised Disneyland Park have grown into the Disneyland Resort – a sprawling 500-acre resort destination featuring two renowned Disney parks, three beautiful hotel properties and the exciting entertainment, dining and retail fun of the Downtown Disney District.

Located in Anaheim, California, approximately 25 miles south of Los Angeles, the Disneyland Resort provides guests from around the world with thrills, fun and unique Disney magic. The Resort features two theme parks, the original Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park, along with one of the top-rated family resort destinations in the country, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, as cited in “Travel & Leisure Family.” The Disneyland Resort is, according to many travel surveys, the number-one family resort destination in the western United States.

DISNEYLAND

Renowned as “The Happiest Place on Earth,” Disneyland is Walt Disney’s original theme park and the centerpiece of the Disneyland Resort. Covering 85-acres, it has grown over the past six decades to include eight familiar themed “lands” including Main Street, U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, Fantasyland, Mickey’s Toontown and Tomorrowland.

Featuring more than 60 adventures and attractions, Disneyland boasts some of the most quintessential Disney theme park experiences in the world including classics such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, “it’s a small world,” Matterhorn Bobsleds and Indiana Jones Adventure.

With unforgettable seasonal events featuring popular shows and attractions such as Haunted Mansion Holiday, Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy, “it’s a small world” Holiday, snowfall on Main Street, U.S.A and A Christmas Fantasy Parade, Disneyland is an ever-evolving experience. As Walt Disney desired, Disneyland is in constant state of “becoming” with new adventures and attractions always on the drawing board.

In  2006, Pirates of the Caribbean, the classic Disneyland attraction brought to the big screen in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, added new characters (such as Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa) from the blockbuster entertainment franchise. In June 2007, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage surfaced in Tomorrowland. The underwater adventure features the eight submarines of the fondly remembered “Submarine Voyage” attraction and is inspired by the Disney presentation of the Pixar Animation Studios film, “Finding Nemo.”  In 2011, guests began exploring new adventures – six new destinations in more than 50 different 3D combinations – at Star Tours – The Adventures Continue. Construction of a new Star Wars-themed land begins in 2016.

In 2013, Disney Princesses began interacting with park guests in the new Fantasy Faire, a royal setting near the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle. Guests may also see Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters in a dazzling adventure filled with music, fun and special effects at the stage show “Mickey and the Magical Map,” presented daily on the Fantasyland Theatre stage.

DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE

Disney California Adventure, located across from Disneyland, offers guests even more fun with some of the most popular attractions and shows at the resort. Through Disney storytelling and imagination, Disney California Adventure invites guests to enjoy the wonder and beauty of California in its themed lands: Hollywood Land, “a bug’s land,” Pacific Wharf, Paradise Pier, Grizzly Peak and two additions in 2012: the colorful and welcoming Buena Vista Street marking the entrance to Disney California Adventure, and the spectacular 12-acre Cars Land, inspired by the Radiator Springs setting of the Disney●Pixar movie “Cars.” In 2015, the Condor Flats area was reimagined as Grizzly Peak Airfield, an extension of Grizzly Peak inspired by the lush High Sierras of California.

With the completion of a five-year expansion project, continuing the growth of Disneyland Resort as a multi-day, world-class vacation destination, Disney Imagineers have brought more of Walt Disney into the 60 acres of Disney California Adventure. The park celebrates the hope and optimism of California that attracted Walt to this land of opportunity in the 1920s. In 2010, the nighttime water spectacular “World of Color” debuted, with a new viewing area along Paradise Bay. In 2011, guests began taking magical journeys on The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, In 2012, Buena Vista Street, inspired by the Los Angeles of the 1920s and ‘30s, began welcoming guests entering Disney California Adventure with the Red Car Trolley and an array of restaurants and shops.

Crowning the expansion was Cars Land, with its vast Radiator Springs landscape, its “road trip”-themed restaurants and shops, and exciting attractions. Today, Cars Land features fan favorites such as the thrilling highway competition of Radiator Springs Racers, the swinging, dancing tractors of Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, the tasty “cone-coctions” of Cozy Cone Motel and the delicious house-made pies of Flo’s V8 Cafe.

One of the signature attractions at Disney California Adventure is Soarin’ Over California – a breathtaking virtual hang-gliding tour over some of the state’s most amazing landmarks and scenic wonders. Another guest favorite is Toy Story Mania!, an attraction that invites guests to enjoy a high-scoring, immersive adventure, entering a wild 4D world of game play.

Along with Woody, Buzz and favorite “Toy Story” characters, special effects add a fourth dimension of fun.

Guests at Disney California Adventure experience California-style fun on such attractions as the thrilling twists and turns of California Screamin’ roller coaster, the chilling supernatural mayhem of The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror, and the icy-cold, white-knuckle rafting of the Grizzly River Run. Fun is even found in the smallest of places such as a bug’s land, inspired by the Disney●Pixar film “A Bug’s Life” and featuring the 3D antics of It’s Tough to be a Bug!

In 2016, the 2000-seat Hyperion Theater will present an all-new stage production of “Frozen,” immersing guests in the world of Arendelle with elaborate costumes and sets, special effects and scenic transformations. . In the nearby Disney Animation attraction, Turtle Talk with Crush provides fun for the whole family with some interactive magic.

Guests at Disney California Adventure also may meet Anna and Elsa at “Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome.”

DOWNTOWN DISNEY DISTRICT

Bridging the two theme parks and three hotels is Downtown Disney, an admission-free entertainment, dining and retail district. The 300,000-plus square-foot Downtown Disney District includes Starbucks, ESPN Zone, House of Blues, Rainforest Café, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Earl of Sandwich, AMC 12 and more than 20 retail shops including Sephora and LEGO Imagination Center. Guests can also board a Disneyland Monorail for a trip from the high-energy of Downtown Disney to the futuristic landscape of Tomorrowland in Disneyland.

DISNEYLAND RESORT HOTELS

The Disneyland Resort is also home to three hotels that are just footsteps away from the thrills of the Disneyland Resort theme parks and the multitude of dining, entertainment and shopping at the Downtown Disney District. As a walking resort with close proximity of all parks and locales, the Disneyland Resort is noted for its convenience and ease of navigation, making it an ideal vacation destination for families with small children.

Designed in California’s renowned Arts and Crafts style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a true testament to Disney’s hospitality and creativity. With the 2009 expansion, the Grand Californian hotel has 948 guest rooms, including 44 guest suites, and 50 two-bedroom equivalent vacation villas. Those vacation villas, which include kitchens, living and dining areas and other home-like amenities, make up the first West Coast appearance of Disney Vacation Club, Disney’s innovative vacation-ownership program.

The hotel also has an array of fine dining including the nationally renowned and award-winning Napa Rose restaurant that provides specialty dining dishes, spectacular views of Disney California Adventure and expert sommeliers to assist in making the perfect selection from one of the finest collections of California wines anywhere in the world.

Storyteller’s Cafe is another dining experience within the hotel where kids and adults alike can enjoy a distinct meal with some of Disney’s favorite characters, including Chip & Dale. The Grand Californian also has three pools and the luxurious Mandara Spa.

For more than 50 years, the iconic Disneyland Hotel has provided its guests with a rich tradition of fun and warm hospitality.  The award-winning hotel has 973 guest rooms and 60 suites along with an array of fine dining including the award-winning Steakhouse 55 and Goofy’s Kitchen. A major renovation of Disneyland Hotel was completed in 2012, including updated rooms with new décor and surprises, a cleverly themed new water play area, two swimming pools, the Tangaroa Terrace casual-dining restaurant, Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar and re-theming of the hotel’s three guest room towers.

California’s breezy laidback beach lifestyle is in full effect at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel. Inspired by a beach boardwalk hotel and boasting spectacular views of Disney California Adventure, the hotel has 481 rooms, including 25 suites.  For children, the dining highlight at PCH Grill features “Surf’s Up! Breakfast with Mickey & Friends,” a character experience. Guests may relax at the scenic outdoor terrace with its sparkling pool and bubbling spa.

All Resort hotel guests can take advantage of Pinocchio’s Workshop, located in Disney’s  Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, which is a fun and unique activity center for children between the ages of five and 12.  Parents or caregivers can take advantage of this when they decide to take in a meal alone or take advantage of one of the many other entertainment offerings at the Disneyland Resort.  Kids will have an evening full of arts and crafts, computer games, Disney films, dinner and snacks while under the care of licensed supervisors.

Ten Overlooked Experiences at Epcot

overlooked Epcot

Epcot – the park where two worlds collide, the world of today and the world of the future! There is so much to see and do at this amazing park, in both Future World and World Showcase. I could spend days just walking around World Showcase – looking at all of the little details, and enjoying ethnic delights. There are some attractions that everyone flocks too, but there are also so many experiences that are often missed by many. Here are ten overlooked experiences at Epcot that you should consider adding to your next trip!

  • Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure – Join Agent P, Carl, and Major Monagram for a trip around World Showcase to try to stop Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s evil plans! This is a lot of fun, even if you don’t have kids with you! On two occasions my husband and I have done it! Just like A Pirates Adventure in Magic Kingdom, there are surprises around every corner.
  • Gran Fiesta Tour – This one is often overlooked because of its location. It can be found in the back of the Mexico Pavilion, inside the pyramid, next to San Angel Inn Restaurante. Since it is overlooked you can almost always just walk right onto the boat for a tour of Mexico with Jose Carioca and Panchito while they search for Donald Duck.
  • Living with the Land – As I like to call it, “The Land” if often overlooked because of what is around it. Located in The Land Pavilion this slow moving boat ride is right next door to Soarin’. There are some occasions where there is an actual wait time, but in most cases, you can just walk right on. So board your boat and learn about different climates and agriculture as you float through the amazing Disney green houses.
  • Entertainment – There are so many options when it comes to authentic and ethnic entertainment around World Showcase. Many guests will see or hear an act for a few seconds as they pass by to continue their trip around the world. Stop for a few minutes an take it all in, acts include – Jeweled Dragon Acrobats, Mariachi Cobre, Matsuriza, Sbandieratori Di Sansepolcro, Sergio, TradNation and the Voices of Liberty.
  • Crepes – This one isn’t even on the map! Located in the France Pavilion, right to the cart where you can get grown up slushies, and across from Chefs de France you can get delicious crepes. Get them plain or get them with chocolate – either way they are amazing.
  • L’artisan des Glaces – Have you ventured all of the way to the back of the France Pavilion? If you haven’t then you’re missing out on some amazing sweet treats. Many guest know about Les Halles Boulangerie & Patisserie, but there is also an amazing ice cream shops that offers cups, cones, and pressed brioche ice cream sandwiches. Stop by to try one, or two, of the delicious 16 flavors available.
  • Image Works – The “What If” Labs – This is where you end up after riding Journey into Imagination with Figment. Here you can explore, create, and learn. Make music, create your own Figment, take custom photos, and shop for Figment merchandise. I love spending time in here – and riding Journey into Imagination.
  • Innoventions – This is another opportunity to learn. Learn on vacation *gasp*. I know, but Epcot and Animal Kingdom are full of educational opportunities, Disney just knows how to make Disney fun. Learn how to protect yourself and your home during a storm and create storm safety kits with StormStruck. Create and ride your own virtual thrill ride with The Sum of All Thrills. And learn all about color and how it effects our daily lives from Colortopia.
  • O Canada – Located in the very back of the Canada Pavilion this Circle-Vision film will show you just why you should visit Canada. The beauty and wonder of our neighbors to the north will be all around you. You’ll also see faces of celebrities from Canada.
  • Reflections of China – There’s more to China than just the Great Wall. Step inside and be surrounded by the people and culture of China during this Circle-Vision film.

Have you tried any of these experiences? Which one are you looking forward to adding to your next trip? Let us know in the comments!

According to the Walt Disney World app there will be three showings of Animal Kingdom’s River of Light new nightly show with dinner packages being offered at Tusker House. No other details are on the app but we believe it will work just like the Fantasmic! Dinner Package at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Full package details are not on the app but by viewing the screenshot below you will see how this may work. It seems as though you will be able to make breakfast, lunch or dinner reservations and include the nightly show! How cool is that?

I am so excited about this and cannot wait until it becomes available! How about you?
