The animation world recently lost a talented artist. Michael ‘Mike’ Toth, a renowned Disney animator, passed away on December 29, 2024. The news was shared by his daughter, Christine Vegara, in a post on the Cartoon Research Facebook page.

In her Facebook post, Christine Vegara shared that after losing his job at Walt Disney Studios, her father, Michael Toth, struggled with alcoholism and homelessness in Los Angeles. Vegara emphasized the importance of raising awareness about alcohol abuse, stating, ‘My dad was a wonderful man, and alcohol cut his time short. Please enjoy his art.’

Toth’s career began at Filmation Studios in 1978, where he worked on beloved cartoons like ‘The New Adventures of Tom and Jerry’ and ‘Ghostbusters.’ He also collaborated with Bill Melendez on several ‘Peanuts’ projects, including ‘This Is America, Charlie Brown’ and ‘It’s Spring Training, Charlie Brown.’

Toth joined Walt Disney Studios in the late 1980s, transitioning to Walt Disney Feature Animation in the mid-1990s. His impressive portfolio includes work on ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame,’ ‘Hercules,’ ‘Mulan,’ ‘Tarzan,’ ‘Atlantis: The Lost Empire,’ and ‘Home on the Range.’ He also contributed to the Oscar-nominated short film, ‘The Little Matchgirl.’ Toth continued to share his passion for animation, making appearances at comic-cons across the country.

The trio of male dolphins that once called The Seas Pavilion home were given a new residence at Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Fort Walton Beach last October. Disney explained that this relocation was a result of careful consideration for the dolphins’ welfare as construction projects began to impact their living environment within The Seas.

Construction has begun on the former dolphin tank, marked by the presence of tarps erected on the left side of the structure.

The sounds of power tools could be heard from the other side of the tank, while a diver worked above the interconnecting tunnel. The specific nature of the tank renovations and the potential future inhabitants remain undisclosed.

Situated within the World Nature section of EPCOT, The Seas With Nemo & Friends has a rich history. Originally debuting in 1986 as The Living Seas, the pavilion underwent a significant transformation in 2007, incorporating the beloved “Finding Nemo” storyline. While the EPCOT reimagining brought back the classic “Living Seas” logo, the pavilion continues to evolve with recent enhancements such as a modernized nursery, revitalized special effects, and a refreshed exterior appearance.

However, Disney has not yet announced any programming for this new location as part of the festival lineup.

Living with the Land Restores Key Effects in Rainforest and Desert Scenes

EPCOTโ€™s beloved Living with the Land attraction continues to receive some much-appreciated care and maintenance, with the restoration of two key effects that enhance the storytelling experience. Guests riding through the serene rainforest scene can once again enjoy the waterfall effect, which had been missing for over four months. The cascading water, flowing through tree roots and accompanied by an additional stream below, perfectly complements the narration about how trees and plants gather nutrients from groundwater, bringing the scene back to life in its full glory.

Thatโ€™s not all! The warm air effect in the desert scene has also returned after being out of operation for several months. As guests transition from the cool rainforest to the dry desert, a vent in the tunnel now blows warm air, providing a subtle yet immersive reminder of the dramatic environmental shift. This small but impactful detail adds to the charm and educational value of the ride.

These latest updates follow a series of improvements made to Living with the Land earlier this year. In June 2024, the brush fire scene and lightning effects behind the buffalo were restored after a lengthy period of inactivity. Back in April, the rainforest sceneโ€™s lighting was refreshed, further enhancing its ambiance.

Itโ€™s clear that Disney has been prioritizing maintenance and updates for this classic EPCOT attraction, ensuring that it continues to delight guests while highlighting the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship. With its thoughtful storytelling and gentle ride experience, Living with the Land remains a fan favoriteโ€”and itโ€™s wonderful to see it being given the attention it deserves.

Be sure to check out these restored effects on your next visit to EPCOT and experience the magic of Living with the Land in all its revitalized splendor!
