New Animal Kingdom Guide maps are coming...

Starting on January 1st, 2018 Disney is going to be rolling out new guide maps for the Animal Kingdom Theme Park. The new guide map shows one of my favorite rides in the Animal Kingdom, the Kilimanjaro Safaris on the cover.

One of the bigger changes on the inside is the removal of Flights of Wonder which will be getting a Wilderness Explorer upgrade with Russel and Dug From Disney•Pixar’s ‘UP’ sometime this spring.

New Animal Kingdom Guide maps are coming...

In case you were wondering the current guide map has Rivers of Light on the cover.

Your Guide to the Hotels at Disneyland Resort

Disneyland

Disneyland

At the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, leisure and business travelers will find three Disney Hotel properties, each with a distinctive style: the luxurious surroundings and California Craftsman architecture of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the classic Disney magic and charm of the Disneyland Hotel, and the sunny California beachfront theme at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.

Offering a variety of accommodations, surroundings, and amenities, all three hotels feature the famous Disney touch for quality, service and hospitality.

As part of the Disneyland Resort, these hotels are just steps away from the eclectic mix of dining, entertainment and recreational features of the Downtown Disney District.  Of course, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Parks are just a short walk away from any of the on-property hotels.

DISNEYLAND HOTEL

The reimagined Disneyland Hotel creates a fun, family destination that pays tribute to the early days of Disneyland. 973 rooms are spread across three themed towers that feature an energy-efficient sky-blue reflective glass exterior. The Fantasy Tower lobby showcases Mary Blair artwork, creating an instant connection to “it’s a small world.” The Frontier Tower features a scale model of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in the lobby. At the Adventure Tower, guests will see Jungle Cruise characters incorporated into the design.

The AAA Four Diamond hotel is also home to a unique collection of themed suites immersing guests in a way only Disney can, including the Mickey Mouse Penthouse, Pirates of the Caribbean, Adventureland, Big Thunder and Fairy Tale suites.

Guests of all ages will enjoy an immersive water play area and courtyard. With a nod to the iconic original park signage, a replica of the original Mark 1 Monorail Car sits at the entrance of two water slides, paying tribute to nostalgic Disneyland. No tickets are required at the D-Ticket and E-ticket pools, which draw their names from the iconic ticket books that were used in the early days of Disneyland to experience attractions. The area also features a Minnie Mouse-themed outdoor spa. In addition, six cabanas are available; each features a flat screen TV, refrigerator, safe, phone, and ceiling fan.

For dining experiences, Tangaroa Terrace features Island-inspired fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are prepared to order and delivered to their tables either inside or on the large outdoor patio.

Trader Sam’s – Enchanted Tiki Bar, named after Trader Sam, Disney’s Jungle Cruise “head salesman,” features interactive special effects blended with classic Disney storytelling. Trader Sam’s serves a mix of creative appetizers and signature cocktails like the “Uh Oa!” (light and dark rums with orange, passion fruit, guava and grapefruit juices) or the “Shipwreck on the Rocks” (bourbon, lemon, mint, and organic agave nectar). Live music performed on the patio in the evening adds to the fun environment.

For families or individuals preferring a high degree of service, the Disneyland Hotel features concierge-level rooms with upgraded in-room amenities and complimentary access to the exclusive concierge lounge.  Meetings are easily accommodated within the hotel’s 136,000-square-feet of function space, and a business center provides a variety of services.

DISNEY’S GRAND CALIFORNIAN HOTEL & SPA

Capturing the spirit of early California through inspiring design and daring architecture, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a deluxe 948-room resort hotel property, offering a premium option for business or pleasure visits to the Disneyland Resort.

This AAA Four Diamond hotel is the first Disney resort hotel in the world to be located inside a theme park – Disney California Adventure – making stays at the deluxe hotel a uniquely themed experience.  The Grand also is home to the first Disney Vacation Club Villas on the West Coast.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa celebrates the romantic Arts & Crafts movement of early 20th century California.  Designed to capture the artistic exploration of California’s coastlines with its Monterey pines and redwood forests, the hotel is layered with the memories of the arroyo craftsmen, the mission pioneers and the Plein Air school of painters.

Among the deluxe guestrooms are standard rooms, artisan suites, two vice presidential suites and two presidential suites. In addition, the Resort offers more than 20,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, ranging from the 12,000-square-foot Sequoia ballroom to smaller conference rooms and a sophisticated boardroom.

The deluxe hotel features 24-hour room service, its own entry gate into Disney California Adventure, and rooms that overlook both the theme park and the exciting Downtown Disney District.  For corporate meeting guests, the hotel features meeting planner offices, a business center and separate meetings and conventions check-in facilities.

Food and beverage facilities include the AAA Four Diamond restaurant Napa Rose, as well as Storytellers Cafe and Hearthstone Lounge.  Guests will enjoy two heated pools and a themed water slide, two whirlpools, a children’s pool, and a concierge level with upgraded amenities and services.

DISNEY’S PARADISE PIER HOTEL

Guests return to the heyday of California beachfront boardwalks at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.  Loaded with special Disney touches, this seaside-themed hotel overlooks Paradise Pier, one of the most colorful sections of the Disney California Adventure, making its name and theme a natural fit.

This hotel offers charming facilities and superb service, with a fun California beachfront theme including recently remodeled seaside-themed rooms.  The hotel is festively painted and decorated to reflect the theme, and some guests enjoy a view of the colorful Paradise Pier district of the park right from their room, along with the “World of Color” nighttime water spectacular.

Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel takes pride in being one of the finest hotels in its class.  The 15-story, high-rise structure features 481 guest rooms, including remodeled suites and a recently renovated rooftop pool and whirlpool, a fitness center, lobby bar and coffeehouse, poolside bar, gift shops and game arcade.

In Disney’s PCH Grill, guests can take a trip along California’s famous Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), for a celebration of the state’s culinary diversity and fresh spirit.  Offered daily, “Surf’s Up! Breakfast with Mickey & Friends,” is a lively character dining experience where families can snap photos, practice hula hooping and learn how to ride a wave with Mickey Mouse and other favorite Disney characters. Disney’s PCH Grill also offers the Beach Side Bonfire Dinner Buffet, where guests can enjoy a taste of the picnics, barbecues, and bonfires that often happen along the Pacific Coast Highway beaches.

Disney Resort Spotlight: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

animal kingdom

As a Travel Agent, I am frequently asked what my favorite resort is. While I love each and every resort, I always recommend Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge as one of my three resorts to stay at. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge offers a trip on an African safari without even leaving the United States while offering magic and even a bit of romance!

Let’s take a closer look at what makes Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge so magical:

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, a deluxe resort, which opened April 2001, showcases the wonder and romance of Africa, from the hand-carved furnishings and the gourmet cuisine served in its many restaurants to the splendor of a 46-acre savanna around the resort where animals roam freely. Disney Imagineers visited more than 20 African lodges for inspiration and research when designing the resort.

Namukelekile! (Zulu – nă mu ke’ le ke lĕ): Welcome All of You!

The entrance to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, featuring lush foliage, leads to the thatched-roofed main lobby. The lodge’s shape — resembling a horseshoe — is based on the traditional kraal (pronounced “crawl”), or corral, a design used in African villages to keep homes and livestock safe from harm. Designed by Peter Dominick (who also designed Disney’s Wilderness Lodge at Walt Disney World Resort and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland Resort), the six-story resort features towering thatched roofs complemented by rich woods and golden tones. The grand lobby features a large, mud fireplace, natural lighting and giant dormer windows that provide spectacular views of sunrises and sunsets over the animal-filled savanna. At night, incandescent lighting twinkles, resembling fireflies and soft-glowing campfires. Just outside the lobby, an elevated kopje, or rock outcropping, puts guests within 15 feet of the animals and gives an extraordinary, near-panoramic view of the animal reserve.

Guest Rooms: Handcrafted Beauty

Nestled on 74 acres west of Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is built in the middle of its own savanna, providing most of the rooms views into the animal sanctuary, with other rooms offering views of the Uzima Pool and Springs. Guestroom balconies overlooking the reserve put guests within 30 feet of the rich grasslands.

Each of the lodge’s rooms features handcrafted furniture and art — much of it made in Zimbabwe.  Rich woods and vibrant colors showcase the art of African craftsmanship.  For instance, some headboard designs have been inspired by “butterfly” masks. The Royal Asante Suite features a domed, hut-like living room that’s truly “fit for a king” with a kitchen, office, dining room and sweeping porches offering spectacular views of the savanna.

Accommodations range in size from standard rooms, to one- and two-bedroom suites.  Club-level (concierge) rooms also are available. Each room sleeps four to eight guests with a variety of choices.  King-size beds, queen-size beds and bunk beds are available in rooms throughout the resort. Plus, studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom vacation villas are available in the adjacent Kidani Village, a Disney Vacation Club Resort.

A World of Amenities

Famous Disney service and deluxe amenities combine to create an unforgettable adventure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. The resort features a 9,000-square-foot, themed feature pool — which offers a poolside view of the savanna — as well as two bubbling spas. The Zahanati Massage and Fitness Center offers facials, body treatments and massage therapy. Featured for the younger set: Simba’s Cubhouse, a children’s activity center; Pumbaa’s Fun and Games arcade; a pool and the Hakuna Matata Playground.

A Culinary Journey

The resort’s signature restaurant is Jiko-The Cooking Place, featuring cuisines from around the globe: berbere braised lamb shank, durban shrimp curry, chermoula roasted chicken. Appetizers are equally imaginative, like maize and sweet potato tamales with shredded goat cheese. Jiko is Swahili for “cooking place.”

Along with the adjacent Cape Town Wine Room and Cape Town Lounge, Jiko features South African wines. Jiko’s interior design, inspired by Disney’s “The Lion King,” is by Jeffrey Beers, known for his wildly creative interiors.

Boma-Flavors of Africa is the name of the family “marketplace” restaurant featuring an exhibit kitchen with a wood-burning grill and rotisserie.  Boma in Swahili is “an open, natural space that provides a safe and sheltered place in the bush.” The 270-seat restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner.

Fans of Jiko-The Cooking Place and Boma-Flavors of Africa have a third dining option at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge — Sanaa in the resort’s Kidani Village, a part of Disney Vacation Club.

With interiors inspired by African art and remarkable views of the resort’s Sunset Savanna through 9-foot windows, diners experience “the art of African cooking with Indian flavors” in the 150-seat, family-oriented restaurant located on the ground floor just below the lobby.

Two other dining locations at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge: The Mara, named after the Mara River, a quick-service eatery serving breakfast, lunch and dinner — and Victoria Falls, the mezzanine lounge overlooking Boma, serves gourmet coffee and teas, South African vintage wines, international beers and cocktails.

AKL

24-Hour Animal Viewing Opportunities

The savanna is home to more than 200 mammals and birds representing a cross-section of the African palette — greater kudu, Grant’s zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala, marabou stork to name a few. The hoofstock and birds roam freely on the savanna where resort guests may enjoy 24-hour viewing opportunities.

Landscape: The Art of the Earth

Landscape design at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge began long before the resort opened its doors, with the first vegetation planted and secured two years prior to opening.  The rich environment is designed to simulate the landscape systems of the African continent — forested lands, river systems, grasslands and the bush.  Tall thryalis and pampas grass cover the ground in front of the resort, while red and pink hibiscus, bright clusters of red, orange and scarlet Ixora, fragrant white jasmine and green pygmy date palms border the Uzima Pool.  Behind the lodge on Arusha Rock kopje is the signature tree, Peltophorum dubium — or Yellow Flame Tree — the canopy tree most recognized as the one on the African plain.

Art: A Celebration of Culture

Reflecting the romance and beauty of African culture, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge features an extensive collection of authentic African art.  Approximately 380 museum-quality pieces are featured in public areas throughout the resort, with more than 4,000 handcrafted works in the guestrooms.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge contracted an art consultant, Mary Hannah, to bring the collection of art to Walt Disney World Resort.

The centerpiece of the resort’s collection is the Igbo Ijele (pronounced e-bo e-gelay) mask, featured in the lobby.  The Ijele, created by the Igbo people of Africa, is a massive creation that towers more than 16 feet tall and is eight feet in width.  In Africa, the mask signifies an important event or celebration and makes rare appearances.  No other Ijele, which is the largest mask in tropical Africa, is known to exist outside of Igbo land.

An African Safari Experience

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge guests can observe birds and animals during the Wanyama Safari, a 3-hour experience that includes an excursion aboard a specially designed vehicle and dinner at Jiko-The Cooking Place.  The sunset safari strives to recreate the essence of an African experience with free-roaming wildlife in an authentic environment, taking guests into the savannas that horseshoe Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.  The sunset safari is offered seven days a week with a maximum of 12 persons.

Programs For All Ages

A series of kid-friendly programs and adult enrichment opportunities at the resort increase guests’ knowledge and appreciation of the African culture.  Children can hear African folklore around the outdoor firepit, become a Junior Safari Researcher or Junior Chef of the Day at the resort.  Guests of all ages can also learn from the lodge’s Savanna Guides in programs that show differences in animals’ physical and naturalistic behavior, while adults take part in wine tasting (the resort boasts the largest collection of South African wines anywhere in the United States) or a self-guided tour of the resort’s extensive art collection.

Authentic Merchandise in the Marketplace

The festive, 5,300-square-foot Zawadi Marketplace carries authentic crafts, clothing and other distinctive merchandise from Africa.  Woodcarvings, Zulu baskets, hand-painted dishes, batik fabrics and hand-made jewelry are offered — even clothing inspired by African tribal wear.  African artisans demonstrate wood carving, painting, jewelry-making and more.  Character and resort logo merchandise also is available.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas are Disney Vacation Club accommodations that are part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.  The studio, one or two-bedroom vacation villas feature intricate African-inspired details and home-like amenities, and most offer sweeping views of an expanded savanna inhabited by a variety of African animals.

Magic and Adventure Await Children of All Ages Aboard a Disney Cruise

Aboard Disney Cruise Line, it’s great to be a kid! Children can let their imaginations set sail in nearly an entire deck customized just for them, teens and tweens have places to gather, and the smallest seafarers are cared for in colorful spaces with whimsical themes. Dedicated areas and customized interactive programs inspire, entertain and spark the imagination of children ages 6 months to 17 years.

While children are enjoying the most extensive youth activity areas at sea, parents can enjoy the ship “worry-free,” thanks to an onboard mobile phone service that allows kids and counselors to contact parents anytime and anywhere on the ship. Plus, all Disney Cruise Line youth activities are supervised by specially trained counselors and feature some of the longest operating hours at sea, providing greater flexibility for parents and even more fun for kids.

It’s a Small World Nursery aboard the Disney Magic

It’s a Small World

Babies and toddlers up to 3 years old enter a whimsical world inspired by the classic Disney theme park attraction at It’s a Small World Nursery. Trained counselors care for and entertain children with toys, books, videos, crafts, and games. The nursery offers some of the longest operating hours and some of the lowest hourly rates for baby and toddler care in the cruise industry, allowing parents to explore adventures ashore, relax on the ship and enjoy time on their own. Please note an additional, nominal fee is charged for It’s a Small World Nursery.

Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Disney’s Oceaneer Lab

Disney’s Oceaneer Club transports kids to magical lands filled with toys, costumes, arts, crafts, games, storytelling, musical fun, dancing and more. Uniquely themed areas inspired by Disney whimsy create a fun-filled play place on all Disney ships.

At Disney’s Oceaneer Lab a seafaring twist with a pirate-theme takes children on a nautical journey of discovery, exploration, and adventure. Kids can sketch original, hand-drawn art and bring to life computer-animated characters.  Crazy interactive science experiments, character experiences, sing-alongs, sports challenges are just some of the many activities kids can participate in.

In both the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab on the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream, kids can have real-time conversations with Crush, the animated sea turtle from “Finding Nemo” or Stitch the mischievous animated space alien. A Magic PlayFloor gives kids the chance to soar above London with Peter Pan, hop around the bayou as frogs or use their own movements to control the tilt of a giant virtual maze.

On all Disney ships, children can personalize their cruise vacation by selecting activities and events based on interest. Kids and parents select programs to create a customized experience for each child. Best of all, children of different ages—siblings, extended family, and friends—can participate in youth activities together.

Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are open to children ages 3 to 12. Popular activities include:

  • Children are immersed in the world of Disney-Pixar’s “Toy Story” with Toy Story Boot Camp Led by Corporal Green, young “recruits” participate in interactive activities for a fun-filled toy tour of duty.
  • Jedi Training: Experience the Force (Disney Dream) is an action-filled training adventure with a Jedi Master who teaches kids how to use the Force to move objects and play Jedi mind tricks on Stormtroopers and Imperial Officers.
  • During Become Iron Man (Disney Magic), young hero hopefuls virtually wear one of Iron Man’s suits during a simulated training experience on a video screen display. The simulation gives recruits the opportunity to test out the suit’s repulsor system and flight mode—just like Iron Man.

Add a Bit of Magic to Your Disneyland Visit With a Stay at the Iconic Disneyland Hotel

Add a Bit of Magic to Your Disneyland Visit With a Stay at the Iconic Disneyland Hotel

If you are planning a visit to Disneyland in 2018 and are debating on where to stay, we here at Chip and Co. think you should definitely consider giving the Disneyland Hotel a try.  Not only do you get to take advantage of onsite perks like early park entry and having the theme parks and Downtown Disney right at your doorstep but you also get to enjoy a pretty impressive array of amenities.  Here’s just a taste of all there is to see, do and explore at this onsite property.

Add a Bit of Magic to Your Disneyland Visit With a Stay at the Iconic Disneyland Hotel

Dining – For those planning on staying “on-property,” having a variety of different dining options available is pretty important. In this respect the Disneyland Hotel definitely delivers.  Here’s a quick rundown of some of the options you’ll find here:

Tangaroa Terrace – This “fast casual” restaurant takes its theming from the original Tahitian Terrace Restaurant in Disneyland with the Polynesian and Tiki decor that was so popular when Disneyland first opened.  The restaurant serves up Island-inspired cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. some of our favorite dishes include cinnamon-spiced oatmeal with Island fruit compote and the Kalua Pork Flatbread.  Guests will also find a selection of salads, sandwiches and “grab-and-go” items. Seating is available inside or on a large adjacent outside patio.

Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar – Named after Trader Sam the “Head Salesman” from The Jungle Cruise, this bar features interactive special effects blended with classic Disney storytelling to create a watering hole like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. Trader Sam’s serves a mix of signature cocktails with awesome names like the  Hippopotamai Tai and the Mosquito Mojito. They also offer light bites perfect for sharing and offer live music in the evenings.

Disneyland Hotel

An Immersive Swimming Pool Experience – If you’re looking to spend some time lounging by the pool than I can’t think of a better place than the Disneyland Hotel.   A replica of the original Mark 1 Monorail Cars sits at each entrance of the waterslide entrances and “Disneyland” is spelled out in familiar block letters in this water play area.  Guests glide through the cars as they twist and turn their ways through the slides.  The larger of the two slides sits 26 feet high and stretches 187 feet. The second slide is 13 feet high and 112 feet long. For those travelling with tiny tots, the area also includes a third mini slide that sits just 3 1/2 feet high and is 19 feet long. In addition, the four-foot deep D-Ticket pool offers a shaded area to cool off and sits next to the new monorail water play areas.

The pool area also features Minnie and Mickey Mouse-themed outdoor spas as well as 6 new cabanas for guests to unwind complete with flat screen TV’s, refrigerators, safe, phone and ceiling fans.

Disneyland Hotel

Guest Rooms:  Each of the guest rooms at the Disneyland Hotel features exquisite touches including beds with light-up headboards that depict a carved representation of Sleeping Beauty Castle.  Each of the headboards features fiber optics to create a magical fireworks display and also a touch of music including the song “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” added in.

Disneyland Hotel

Themed Suites – For those looking for a VIP experience like no other, the Disneyland Hotel also offers a collection of themed suites including a Mickey Mouse Penthouse, a Pirates of the Caribbean Suite, an Adventureland Suite and The Big Thunder Suite fashioned after the much-loved Frontierland coaster. Each of these options are big on Disney-theming and offer multiple rooms, large square footage and lots of extra special amenities.

This is just a taste of the amazing experiences you can have as a guest at the Disneyland Hotel. Read below to find out how you can get your FREE quote for 2018 so that you can start to plan your magical getaway.
