How a British Scientist Saved Disney’s Oldest Cartoons From Destruction

How a British Scientist Saved Disney's Oldest Cartoons From Destruction

Disney has called in a British art conservation expert to save priceless original film cells from some of their most beloved animations from being lost to the ravages of time. Films such as Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland were hand-painted, frame by frame, on plastic sheets. Some of these cells are more than 80 years old and have started to warp, causing the paint to flake.

But British scientists have come up with an unexpectedly simple solution. While most precious artworks benefit from a dry environment, they found that increasing humidity caused paint to reattach itself, thus reversing the damage.

Dr. Tom Learner, from the Getty Conservation Institute, and formerly a conservationist at Tate Modern, has been working with Disney Animation Research Library in Los Angeles. “It’s always nice to end up on a happier note rather than the doom and gloom of degradation,” he told a meeting of scientists in Austin, Texas.

“As part of our Disney cell study one of the problems was with the plastic deforming through degradation. It’s very sensitive to humidity, so when the humidity drops to a dry condition the paint becomes rippled.

“We found just by putting these things in chambers and ramping up the humidity you actually are able to re-adhere the paint to the plastic, so while we are not able to flatten the cells, we can re-adhere it. What’s lovely about this is we haven’t had to put in any glue, adhesive or anything to stick the paint down. This means the paint is safe, will not crack and it can be digitally photographed. We are thrilled.” But other ageing plastic artworks are in danger of degrading, he warned.

Some have already been badly damaged, such as Naum Gabo’s 1927 sculpture Model for Construction in Space ‘Two Cones’ in the Tate collection.

Dr. Learner said: “The scary thing about these sorts of plastics is they appear very stable for a long time and then just suddenly go.”

Walt Disney World Resort Is Connecting Kids to Nature Through Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Panther’

Walt Disney World Resort Is Connecting Kids to Nature Through Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Panther’

If you had the chance to see the record-breaking Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” over the weekend, then you know that teamwork is at the core of the movie. Just like T’Challa, Shuri and the Dora Milaje in the action-packed movie, teams across Walt Disney World Resort joined forces to make a dream come true for kids from the Disney Clubhouse, a branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, who are part of a comic book club.

Last week, cast members from the PULSE Diversity Resource Group visited the group with a special surprise – tickets to an exclusive screening of the new Marvel Studios film and a unique interactive “Black Panther” activity packet developed by Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team. Through an introduction to the film and engaging activities, the kids learned about the strength of nature and the power of finding your inner hero, just like T’Challa.

Walt Disney World Resort Is Connecting Kids to Nature Through Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Panther’

Black Panther is a hero inspired by nature, whose abilities and visual appearance mimic the strengths and adaptation of the animal that shares his name. The film touches on several themes that speak to the importance of protecting nature. Wakanda itself is somewhat utopian in its balance with nature. The intermingling of technology and nature, themes that sometimes appear at odds with each other, is critical to the survival of the Wakandan people.

One of the themes kids learned about was biomimicry, an approach to innovation that emulates designs and ideas found in nature. Patterns in nature have long inspired scientists and helped them develop solutions to challenges. They also learned more about rhinos, one of the animal species Disney is working to protect. M20 is a massive, virtually indestructible rhinoceros featured in the film. Unfortunately, rhinos in the wild are much more vulnerable and face multiple threats of habitat loss and poaching. You can learn more about rhinos and how Disney is working to reverse the decline of this endangered species at DisneyAnimals.com.

Enjoy games, puzzles and crafts that showcase the power of nature and the benefits of spending time outdoors. Check out Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther,” now playing in theaters nationwide.

Disney’s Live-Action Pinocchio Has a Director

Disney's Live-Action Pinocchio Has a Director

Disney’s search for a director of the live-action Pinocchio is over. Paul King, the man who brought Paddington bear to the screen, will now do the same for Disney’s beloved puppet.

Pinocchio is the story of a wooden boy created by an old woodworker named Geppetto. One night, a fairy brings the puppet to life and tells him he will be turned into a real boy if he can prove his bravery. Jiminy Cricket quickly becomes the puppet’s companion and acting conscience. On his journey, Pinocchio learns about honesty and bravery through a series of events which include being kidnapped, turned into a donkey and swallowed by a whale.

Joining King on this project will be Chris Weitz and Andrew Miano as producers and Jack Thorne who will be re-writing the script. The reimagined version of this Disney 1940 classic is slated to begin production this fall.

The 10th Annual Princess Half Marathon Weekend Has Arrived

The 10th Annual Princess Half Marathon Weekend Has Arrived

The 10th annual Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend has arrived. Over the next three days, over 53,000 runners will participate in these women-focused races. So grab your costume, lace up your running shoes and get ready for a weekend packed with inspiration and achievements.

The 10th annual Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend presented by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals will take place this weekend at Walt Disney World Resort.

The race weekend, which has grown from 10,000 runners in 2009 to more than 53,800 expected participants this year, will include 226 “perfect” Princess runners (number of runners who will have participated in every Disney Princess Half Marathon).

The Disney Princess Half Marathon is the largest women-focused running event in the U.S., where the participants trade in ball gowns and glass slippers for running shoes.

More than 45 countries will be represented this weekend with 25,000 runners expected to participate in the half marathon, 13,500 in the 10K, 13,000 in the 5K and about 2,300 taking part in the kid’s races.

The 10th Annual Princess Half Marathon Weekend Has Arrived

Two storylines that have emerged from this weekend’s races include:

Cara Koprowski (Longwood, Fla.), who is running the 2018 Disney Princess Half Marathon to fulfill her late friend Amy’s dream of running the race together.

Cara met Amy while working as an elementary school teacher following her family’s move to Washington state in 2007.

The pair became instant friends and Amy, a fellow teacher, was also an avid runner who inspired Cara to start running again following her recovery from back surgery. In March 2017, Amy passed away. This Sunday, Cara is running the Disney Princess Half Marathon, her first runDisney race and second long-distance run, in honor of her friend, Amy.

Carol Perry (Pewaukee, Wis.), along with friends and family, is running the Disney Princess Half Marathon to celebrate her sister Teresa’s recovery from stage III colon cancer. As a member of her local triathlon team, it came as a shock when Teresa was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016. After Teresa underwent chemotherapy and radiation, as well as colon resection surgery, her sister Carol made a plan for them to participate in the Disney Princess Half Marathon with a group of 12 “princesses,” made up of friends and family – many who have never attempted a half marathon – to celebrate Teresa’s courageous fight with the disease.

The runDisney Health & Fitness Expo begins Thursday at noon. All three races – the Disney Princess 5K, the Disney Princess 10K and the Disney Princess Half Marathon — all have 5:30 a.m. start times.

All races start and finish at Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort. The runDisney Health & Fitness Expo is located at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

New Tropical Hideaway Area to Be Added to Adventureland in Disneyland

Welcome to our Tropical Hideaway you lucky people you! Disneyland announced plans today for a new themed area in Adventureland that will sit along the tropical shores between the Jungle Cruise and Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.

Few details have been released as of yet regarding this exciting new project but we do know that it will be modeled after an exotic traders’ market and will give guests an opportunity to mingle with Adventureland locals and the odd Jungle Cruise skipper.

It would appear that this area will be a place for families to relax, unwind and enjoy a snack or two as Disney is calling the market a place that will feature all the sights, sounds and flavors of the tropics.

This is definitely a project that we here at Chip and Co. will be watching with much excitement! Keep following along for the latest Tropical Hideaway news and updates.
