Photos: Star Wars Land Construction Update

In Hollywood Studios, Toy Story Land is definitely the scene stealer right now. But something tells me that when Star Wars Land opens fall of next year,  everyone will have their sights set on that. The construction is coming along nicely and it’s so teasing to be able to get a small glimpse from just beyond the walls. We were able to get a few pics of the construction, and if you look closely, you can spot the first spaceship that arrived at the land last week.

Photos: Star Wars Land Construction Update

You can visibly see the facade and features starting to come together. It’s really exciting!

Star Wars fans from all over are already planning their Walt Disney World adventures for late fall of next year although an opening date has not yet been determined.

There is also a new Star Wars resort coming to Walt Disney World. Guests will experience a hotel like none other with completely interactive features. They will board a starship upon arrival and be fully immersed in the Star Wars storyline. Completion dates for the resort have not been given.

Stay tuned for updates on Star Wars Land as well as the new Star Wars resort.

Will you be one of the first guests to visit the new Star Wars Land when it opens next year?

Several New Details Revealed About Disney’s Streaming Service

Disney's Streaming Service

Disney's Streaming Service

Last year, Disney announced that it would be removing its catalog from Netflix and begin its own streaming service. Since then, just a few details have been released about Disney’s Streaming Service. Until yesterday. The Disney Blog is reporting that during yesterday’s 3rd Quarter Earnings Call, several new details were announced pertaining to the new service.

“Star Wars” fans everywhere were excited that Disney would be bringing back “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” When it does come back, expect to find it on the new streaming service. Other shows that have been rumored to appear on the new platform are “High School Musical,” “The Muppets,” and Marvel-themed programs.

Viewers will be able to see live action remakes of “Lady and the Tramp” and “The Sword and the Stone” on the service. In addition, the following remakes are rumored to show up:

  • “3 Men and a Baby”
  • “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”
  • “The Parent Trap”
  • “Father of the Bride”

Subscribers can expect to find the following original movies on the platform:

  • “Flora & Ulysses”
  • “Noelle”
  • “The Paper Magician”
  • “Don Quixote”
  • “Timmy Failure”
  • “Stargirl”
  • “Togo”

The following TV series are also projected to be on the new Disney streaming service:

  • “Mighty Ducks”
  • “High Fidelity”
  • “Monsters, Inc.”

Viewers will also be able to find Marvel movies on the service and Disney is currently in talks with Turner Broadcasting to own all the rights to “Star Wars” movies. With the recent accusation of 21st Century Fox, many of the family-friendly options from their catalog will be available but some of the more adult options will go to Hulu.

The price for Disney’s new service has been been a question from many. While we don’t know the exact price at this time, Bob Iger did say it will cost “significantly less” than Netflix.

As for the name, that is also an unknown at this time. Online rumors speculate that it will be called DisneyFlix but that has not been confirmed by Disney.

Iger also commented that the service will be available “late 2019.”

Pedestrian Bridge Installed Connecting New Parking Garage and Disney Springs

Disney Springs

Disney Springs

Currently, at Disney Springs, construction is underway on the Lemon Parking Garage across from Buena Vista Drive. To connect the new garage to Disney Springs and give guests a safe place to cross the street, a pedestrian bridge has just been erected over Buena Vista Drive.

The new pedestrian bridge will be accessible between the World of Disney Store and Basin in the Marketplace area of Disney Springs.

Parking Garage

When complete, the Lemon Parking Garage will be the third parking garage at Disney Springs and add an additional 3,000 covered parking spots. Like the Lime and Orange Garages, the Lemon Garage will also be five levels. The Lemon Garage will also use the same smart technology of the existing garages featuring signs that indicate how many open parking spaces are available in each lane.

A completion date for the Lemon Parking Garage has not yet been announced.

Are you excited about the new parking garage coming to Disney Springs?

Temporary Bar Appears At Polynesian Prior To Tambu Lounge Refurbishment

Tambu Lounge

We had brought you the news earlier this Summer that the Tambu Lounge at the Polynesian Resort was going to be closing for refurbishment after July 4th and that could take up to 2 months to complete. The good news is that the Tambu Lounge is still currently open but unfortunately we are now hearing that the refurbishment will take 3 months once it does kick off.

Temporary Bar Appears At Polynesian Prior To Tambu Lounge Refurbishment Temporary Bar Appears At Polynesian Prior To Tambu Lounge Refurbishment

A new temporary bar has been set up to keep guests happy while the Tambu Lounge refurbishment is happening. It is set up to the left of the door that takes you to the monorail, where the pin store used to be located.

Temporary Bar Appears At Polynesian Prior To Tambu Lounge Refurbishment

We still don’t know the official start date for the refurb. Technically Disney hasn’t even announced it yet. But Cast Members are saying that the Tambu Lounge will be receiving just minor changes most of which are occurring behind the bar and also will be getting new bar top chairs.

The Tambu Lounge is a Hawaiian-inspired Tiki bar with where you’ll find tropical drinks and appetizers—from exotic chicken wings and fresh sushi rolls, to island-themed specialty cocktails and a full bar menu. The lounge is located inside the Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort on the 2nd floor near ‘Ohana. It is a favorite spot for guests to wait and have a cocktail while waiting for their dinner reservations.

New Bus Pick Up Locations at Hollywood Studios

New Bus Pick Up Locations at Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios has changed up the bus stops for Charter buses and buses to the other Disney theme parks. The bus stops for the Disney resort are still located in the same area. The drop-off and pick up locations for the charter buses is located past the current Disney resort bus stops, just across the street near the parking lot. We were able to get a few pictures of them, and it tends to be quite a hike from the existing Disney resort bus parking.

These new locations seem to be working around the gondola construction and/or areas they are keeping equipment for the construction. Either way, we don’t know if this will be permanent or just temporary.

We will keep you updated with any more changes!

The Walt Disney Company Third Fiscal Quarter Earnings Released

Walt Disney Company Third Fiscal Quarter Earnings

The Walt Disney Company reported their quarterly earnings for its third fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2018. Let’s take a look at what all was released…

Diluted earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter increased 29% to $1.95 from $1.51 in the prior-year quarter. Excluding certain items affecting comparability, EPS for the quarter increased 18% to $1.87 from $1.58 in the prior-year quarter. EPS for the nine months ended June 30, 2018 increased to $6.81 from $4.55 in the prior-year period. Excluding certain items affecting comparability, EPS for the nine months increased 21% to $5.60 from $4.63 in the prior-year period.

“We’re pleased with our results in the quarter, including a double-digit increase in earnings per share, and excited about the opportunities ahead for continued growth,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “Having earned the overwhelming support of shareholders, we are more enthusiastic about the 21st Century Fox acquisition than ever, and confident in our ability to fully leverage these assets along with our own incredible brands, franchises and businesses to drive significant value across the entire company.”

Media Networks

Media Networks revenues for the quarter increased 5% to $6.2 billion and segment operating income was comparable to the prior-year quarter at $1.8 billion.

  • Cable Networks – Cable Networks revenues for the quarter increased 2% to $4.2 billion and operating income decreased 5% to $1.4 billion. Lower operating income was due to a loss at BAMTech and a decrease at Freeform, partially offset by an increase at ESPN.
  • Broadcasting – Broadcasting revenues for the quarter increased 11% to $2.0 billion and operating income increased 43% to $361 million. The increase in operating income was due to higher program sales, affiliate revenue growth and increased network advertising revenue, partially offset by higher programming costs.
  • Equity in the Income of Investees – Equity in the income of investees decreased from $127 million in the prior-year quarter to $78 million in the current quarter due to higher losses from Hulu and lower income from A+E Television Networks (A+E). These decreases were partially offset by the absence of a loss from BAMTech, which is now consolidated and reported in Cable Networks. The decrease at Hulu was driven by higher programming and labor costs, partially offset by growth in subscription and advertising revenue. The decrease at A+E was due to lower advertising revenue and higher programming costs, partially offset by higher program sales.

Parks and Resorts

Parks and Resorts revenues for the quarter increased 6% to $5.2 billion and segment operating income increased 15% to $1.3 billion. Operating income growth for the quarter was due to increases across key operations. Results include an unfavorable impact due to the timing of the Easter holiday relative to the fiscal periods. One week of the Easter holiday fell in the third quarter of the current year whereas both holiday weeks fell in the third quarter of the prior year.

Higher operating income at the domestic parks and resorts was due to increased guest spending, partially offset by increased costs. Guest spending growth was due to increases in average ticket prices, food, beverage and merchandise spending and average daily hotel room rates. The increase in costs was due to labor and other cost inflation, partially offset by lower marketing costs. At Disney Cruise Line, growth was driven by higher passenger cruise days, which was primarily due to the Disney Fantasy dry-dock in the prior-year quarter.

The increased operating income at the international parks and resorts was due to growth at Shanghai Disney Resort and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. Higher operating income at Shanghai Disney Resort was due to lower costs and attendance growth, partially offset by decreased guest spending. The decrease in guest spending was driven by lower average ticket prices, partially offset by higher food and beverage spending. At Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, the increase in operating income was primarily due to higher occupied room nights, average ticket prices and attendance.

Studio Entertainment

Studio Entertainment revenues for the quarter increased 20% to $2.9 billion and segment operating income increased 11% to $708 million. Operating income growth was due to increases in domestic theatrical and worldwide TV/SVOD distribution results, partially offset by film cost impairments related to animated films that will not be released and lower domestic home entertainment results.

The increase in domestic theatrical distribution results was due to the success of Avengers: Infinity War and Incredibles 2 in the current quarter compared to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Cars 3 in the prior-year quarter, partially offset by higher pre-release marketing costs. Additionally, the current quarter included the continuing performance of Black Panther and the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, whereas the prior-year quarter included the continuing performance of Beauty and the Beast and the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Higher TV/SVOD distribution results were due to the timing of title availabilities at the domestic pay and free television businesses, international growth and higher domestic pay television rates.

Lower domestic home entertainment results were due to a decrease in unit sales driven by the timing of the release of Star Wars titles. The DVD/Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was in the second quarter of the current year whereas the DVD/Blu-ray release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story occurred in the prior-year third quarter. Other significant titles included Black Panther in the current quarter, while the prior-year quarter included Beauty and the Beast and Moana.

Consumer Products & Interactive Media

Consumer Products & Interactive Media revenues decreased 8% to $1.0 billion and segment operating income decreased 10% to $324 million. The decrease in operating income was due to lower income from licensing activities and decreased comparable retail store sales, partially offset by lower costs at the games business.

The decrease in income from licensing activities was driven by lower revenue from products based on Spider-Man and Cars, partially offset by an increase from products based on Avengers.
