WALL-E and EVE Are Headed To Mars With NASA

WALL-E and EVE Are Headed To Mars With NASA

NASA’s Atlas V rocket launched from California Saturday morning, headed for Mars with the Mars InSight lander. It’s mission is to study the interior of the red planet as well as ‘Marsquakes’. The rocket had a couple of stowaways on board when it launched. Two small satellites named WALL-E and EVE ejected from the rocket after it lifted off and are now following the lander to Mars.

These CubeSats are the size of a briefcase and weigh in around 30 pounds.  Miniature satellites have been hitching rides into space for years. This inexpensive way to put the satellites into space has mostly been confined to Earth’s orbit. With NASA’s Mars Cube One project (MarCO), however, these CubeSats have been able to set their sights on further distances such as the moon.

In the movie WALL-E, the curious robot uses a fire extinguisher outside of the space ship to propel himself through space. The two twin cubes are equipped with the same type of propulsion. Given this characteristic to the Pixar movie, scientists couldn’t help but name the two CubeSats WALL-E and EVE.

To prevent any collisions, the two will travel thousands of miles apart from each other behind the lander. While InSight is scheduled to land on Mars on November 26th, 2018, WALL-E and EVE have different missions. They will soar past the red planet at a distance of 2,200 miles. The goal is to see if these CubeSats can transmit data to Earth. It it’s successful, flight controllers will hear transmission data in a matter of minutes. This of course, is the backup. If it fails, there is still the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter that is already in orbit around Mars. The transmission is slower but is the main communication link with InSight.

After their mission, WALL-E and EVE will continue to orbit around the sun for years. They do have a limited fuel supply and will not be operation for long.

Aquatica’s Ray Rush Family Adventure Water Slide Ride Opens May 12th

Aquatica Ray Rush

Aquatica Orlando’s newest attraction, Ray Rush, will make its debut on Saturday, May 12th. This featured water slide combines three components that have not been done before at Aquatica.  Ray Rush is sure to be an outstanding family adventure that will leave guests ready to ride again.

At nearly 60 feet tall, Ray Rush provides an opportunity for family and friends to take on three exciting thrills as they slide, splash and soar like never before. First, riders will be launched with water jets designed to propel rafts into the first of several enclosed tube sections. Next, riders will swirl into the giant sphere. Finally, riders will drop into an open-air halfpipe that resembles the shape of a manta ray before ending with a splash. Ray Rush will have a height requirement of 42” for this all-new water slide to appeal to families with children and will accommodate up to four riders per raft.

 Ray Rush

Aquatica announced the addition of Ray Rush in October 2017. The new water slide is located on the north side of the park next to Walkabout Waters.  Walhalla Wave, which was temporarily closed to accommodate the construction of Ray Rush, reopened this past weekend.

Ray Rush Aquatica

The best way to experience Aquatica is with an Aquatica Orlando Annual Pass. Aquatica Pass Members enjoy unlimited admission and free parking as well as discounts and the opportunity to be among the first to ride Ray Rush when it opens. Permits Filed for Construction at Walt Disney World’s Private Airstrip

Disney World

Disney World

You may or may not know that the there is a private airstrip at Walt Disney World very close to the Magic Kingdom. STOLport or “Short Takeoff and Landing” port was originally designed to service Guests traveling to larger airports or for executives visiting Walt Disney World. The airport was only designed to handle up to four aircraft at a time and there was never even a hangar constructed. The airstrip and adjacent area has not been in use for several years and most recently has served as a parking area and warehouse.

Disney World

The use of that airport might be changing though. Per permits filed today with the State of Florida entitled “Stolport Stockpile,” some sort of construction is scheduled to begin on the area next to the former airport and may also incorporate the airstrip. The permits outline an area of east of the airport and about 30.2 acres. The permits also detail the lengthening of a current road.

Disney World

At this time, it is not known what Disney plans to do with this area. There is the chance that they might be planning to build aviation facilities with an attempt to get the airstrip up and running again. It’s important to keep in mind though, that just like the Magic Kingdom, the airstrip is part of a no-fly zone. The airstrip is also not currently registered with the FAA.

Disney Dreamers and Doers Shining Stars Honor 15 Local Students

Disney Dreamers and Doers Shining Stars Honor 15 Local Students

The Disney Dreamers and Doers program has honored 15 local Florida students that demonstrate excellence in school, home, and in the community. This year over 400 students were nominated by the administration from their schools and from that the top 15 shining stars were selected.  These students were selected for being the best of the best, truly showcasing what it means to both “dream” and “do.”

The 2018 Disney Dreamers and Doers Shining Stars are:

Lake County:

  • Presli Sickels, Sawgrass Bay Elementary, 4th grade
Presli founded Kindness Kids, a project that helps distribute crayons, coloring books and more to those in need.

Gabriella loves the arts, and shares her passion for music, dance and visual arts with other children in her neighborhood who may not experience it otherwise.
  • Juliet Cahow, Osceola County School for the Arts, 12th grade
After being diagnosed with depression as a freshman, Juliet founded Positiviti, a group dedicated to creating safe spaces on school campuses for students to gather and discuss positive body image and bullying.

Polk County

  • Grayce Wuesthoff, Boswell Elementary, 5th grade
Grace’s family struggled for many years. She encouraged them all to volunteer together, which ultimately led them to discovering resources that could help their own family and they have since qualified for a house of their own.
  • Audrey Link, Resurrection Catholic Middle, 6th grade
Audrey recently won an art contest to raise money for missing children. She has since advocated to raising awareness for missing children in Central Florida.
  • Maria Del Carmen Martinez, Mulberry Senior High School, 11th grade
Maria grew up in a migrant worker camp and was separated from her parents. Today she supports her two siblings and gives back to others in need, including distributing much-needed items to residents of mobile home parks after Hurricane Irma.

Seminole County

  • Jeremy Garcia-Abreu, Carillon Elementary School, 5th grade
After being evacuated from Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, Jeremy struggled with English. Now, his English has improved so much that he has decided to help other Spanish-speaking students at his school.
  • Sydney Gross, Galileo Gifted School, 8th grade
Sydney makes a point to say something uplifting and positive about her peers each day, hoping to inspire them to accept their true selves and to mitigate the influence of social media.
  • Amber Lim, The Master’s Academy, 11th grade
After learning about water scarcity, Amber dedicates her time to spreading awareness of the issue amongst her peers. She also organized a fundraiser for her high school that will help to build a well in Haiti.

“Disney Dreamers and Doers Shining Stars receive a Walt Disney World Resort Annual Pass for themselves and each member of their immediate family, a special Mickey Mouse statue known as a “Mousecar” and a matching gold medallion commemorating their honor. To further celebrate their incredible achievements, the students and their families will be treated to an Incredible Summer night at Epcot, complete with a dessert party and special fireworks viewing.”- Disney
