The Disney Movie Moments Program Expands Its Operations

Disney Movie Moments

Disney Movie Moments

Disney Movie Moments a program that brings current Disney theatrical releases to children’s hospitals, enabling young patients to see the latest films from Disney while they are undergoing treatment and may not be able to visit movie theaters. Recently The Walt Disney Studios celebrated a major expansion of the program with a special screening of Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet at La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where children and families also enjoyed photo opportunities with characters, giveaways distributed by Disney VoluntEARS and meet-and-greets with some of the film’s animators. The event was hosted by ABC 7 Chicago and continues the station’s longstanding relationship with La Rabida.

The Disney Movie Moments Program Expands Its Operations

“Disney is a longtime supporter of the important work children’s hospitals do, and with the Disney Movie Moments program, we aim to brighten the day of young patients by bringing the latest in Disney storytelling directly to these very special fans,” said Alan Bergman, president, The Walt Disney Studios. “Today, we are thrilled to be able to more than double the program’s reach to nearly 120 hospitals around the country.”

“Because of the type of care some kids require, a lot of our patients aren’t able to enjoy simple things, like going out to see a movie. As caregivers, we aim to provide experiences that allow kids to be kids, if even for a moment. We’re very lucky that organizations like Disney and our friends at ABC 7 Chicago recognize the value in those moments, and help us make events like Disney Movie Moments possible,” stated La Rabida president and CEO, Brenda Wolf.

The program, which uses proprietary technology to deliver first-run films directly to children’s hospitals, launched in 48 hospitals in 2014. Since then, nearly all new film releases from Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm have been screened and Disney remains the only Hollywood studio to host a program of this kind, building upon the Company’s long tradition of supporting children’s hospitals.

The Disney Movie Moments Program Expands Its Operations

Disney Movie Moments is a part of the Disney Team of Heroes philanthropic initiative to provide comfort and inspiration to families with children facing serious illness and to support children’s hospitals around the country. In March, Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced an innovative five-year plan to dedicate more than $100 million in cash and resources to children’s hospitals.

Award Ceremony for Disney ImagiNations Hong Kong Design Competition 2018

Award Ceremony for Disney ImagiNations Hong Kong Design Competition 2018

Nearly 300 students from Hong Kong and mainland Chinese institutions entered the “Disney ImagiNations Hong Kong Design Competition 2018”. This is an annual competition which encourages students to use their imagination to design new experiences. The Disney ImagiNations Competition was first launched in the United States in 1992. Hong Kong held its first Disney ImagiNations Competition in 2011! The winning team are invited to Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI)’s headquarters in Glendale, California! With the chance to meet experienced Imagineers and finalists of the U.S. contest, visit model shops and preview new Disney projects. They will also be considered for job interviews and internships, plus a six-week work experience at HKDL.

This year, students had to recreate a natural or ancient wonder as a new “exploratory experience with exceptional imaginations”- Hong Kong Disneyland.

This year, there were 70 entries and 8 teams of students entered the final stage showcasing their creativity and design talent. The winning team received their awards from Edward Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, who was the Guest of Honor. Edward Yau praised the students for their talents and the impact the competition has on young people. He said that he has seen many past applicants flourish to become design or creativity professionals. Many of whom joined the Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), Asia, while others found their own careers in the creative industry. He also praised Disney for their long-term commitment in contributing to society and highlighting the importance of imagination, commitment and determination within the creative industry.

Mariam Im, Acting Managing Director, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, said “HKDL has for many years leveraged on our expertise in creativity and entertainment to organize this competition, providing a platform for students to showcase their imaginations and creative talents. This is the first year the competition allowed cross-college teams with the aim of encouraging collaboration among talents from different universities and tertiary institutions.”

The winners of this year’s “Disney ImagiNations Hong Kong Design Competition 2018” goes to Dilara Polat and Yasmin Baratova from SCAD Hong Kong. They chose the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the world for the story alongside their own characters. Their concept called “Time-Quake” would take guests on a thrilling ride through time. The judges selected their concept for their strong story-telling abilities by incorporating different time periods in the same location. The judges believed that guests would find the constantly changing scenery to be very exciting. The winning team said they were looking forward to visiting the WDI’s headquarters and hope to join Disney to continue their creative journey once they graduated!

The 1st runner-up goes to Chan Sze-wah and He Jingsu from the University of Hong Kong who designed the theme park Oasis using the background of Babylon. There are two 2ndrunners-up this year from the University of Hong Kong and the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. All the designs come with different themes to bring new exploratory experiences to guests.

Congratulations to the winners and all the applicants that entered the competition!

“Snowball Express” Shuttles Families of Heroes to Walt Disney World

"Snowball Express" Shuttles Families of Heroes to Walt Disney World

"Snowball Express" Shuttles Families of Heroes to Walt Disney World

Between all the write-ups about food, drink, merchandise, shows, and rides…there sometimes comes a story that really speaks to the heart. Prepare yourself, because this is absolutely one of those times.

Saturday, December 8th…a group of children sat in an airport at Salt Lake City, Utah. Each had a few things in common with the other children. They were all celebrating the holidays. They were all headed on a charter flight to Walt Disney World, and they were all children of fallen service men and women.

Complete with performances, candy, and even Santa…the children and their parents waited to board the “Snowball Express,” a 13th-year-old program that belongs to the Gary Sinese Foundation. The idea? It’s simple, the non-profit foundation is dedicated to alleviating stresses of families that have lost heroes in America’s conflicts by offering them a break from it all. This year, that break came to Walt Disney World Resort.

Drummers, service men and women, therapy dogs, and volunteers provided a fun space for these children to relax and wait until their time for boarding was called. As part of the 1700 children and guardians being served by the foundation this year, these children were able to enjoy face painting and much more as they waited with anticipation to head off to the most magical place on Earth.

"Snowball Express" Shuttles Families of Heroes to Walt Disney World

Edward Felleson, an Airforce Association member and foundation volunteer, had this to say, “What’s really, really good about this is a child who’s gone through the drama can connect.” For “Gold Star” children, he said, the trip shows that “even if they’ve lost a parent, they’re still part of the family.”

Brandi Law continued the sentiment, “Right now, it just feels emotional, very overwhelming, with the number of people who are here … to know we’re not alone.” “For Braxton,” she said, “it’s an opportunity to know he’s not the only kid that has to go through this.”

Indeed giving these children the opportunity to not only enjoy vacations but to connect with others who have (or are) experienced the same pain is a major benefit of the program. Personally, I can relate heavily with what these children have gone through, and the ability to spend time and bond with others who understand is probably as good of medicine as any.  Providing this service is an amazing way to celebrate and give back to a community who has lost so much, and you’d never guess the pain that these families have endured as you watched them laugh and play around the terminal. Considering, it’s even more important as the holidays present a dampening challenge to these special families.

“The holidays are kind of hard sometimes, too. So this kind of re-groups us and we are able to get through the holidays. We get lots of hugs when we go, we get lots of love. We get to see widows and kids we haven’t seen for a while.” – Deborah May, widow of Marine Staff Sergeant Donald C. May, Jr (killed in Baghdad circa 2003).

Obviously, a trip of any kind, even Walt Disney World, won’t permanently fix the pain. But the Gary Sinise Foundation, like many others, aims to inspire families of lost service-members by aiding them in any way they can through their grieving processes. By creating a “stress and guilt” free environment, the foundation has touched many families, including that of Major Brent Taylor, former mayor of North Ogden in Utah who was killed by small arms fire in Kabul, Afghanistan last month.

Fast forward to the runaway (after boarding), and as the plane carrying these families taxis down the runway, more volunteers carrying banners and dressed in festive apparel wave the group good-bye as they embark for Orlando. There too are current service-members rendering salutes to pay respects to the fallen’s families.

"Snowball Express" Shuttles Families of Heroes to Walt Disney World

Of course, there is no way we could ever repay the sacrifices that these families and their lost loved-ones have made. However, as a combat veteran myself, I am certain that each man and woman who gave their life for the rest of us only hoped for one thing…that their family would be taken care of. The “Snowball Express” is a heartfelt and much-needed way to at least try to repay that debt.

SKYLINER UPDATE: Caribbean Beach Resort

CBR Skyliner

CBR Skyliner

We recently stayed at Disney’s Caribbean Beach resort. Staying in the Trinidad section gave us a birds-eye view of the brand new Skyliner station being built and we are excited to bring you a Skyliner update!

SKYLINER UPDATE: Caribbean Beach Resort

The station is really shaping up. Give are the days where it just looked like a shapeless mess of steel beams. Now the shape of the building is clearly visible. It isn’t evident from photos but the station itself is actually very large. When completed this will be a central hub for the brand new gondola transportation system. Guests from Art of Animation and Pop Century will arrive here and then transfer to the appropriate line for their destination (and vice verse from Hollywood Studios and Epcot).

Around the resort, the posts and cables for the Skyliner are clearly visible. This is the view from Old Port Royale looking across the water to the Martinique section.

SKYLINER UPDATE: Caribbean Beach Resort

From what we could see of the inside its clear that there is still much to be done before the Summer 2019 opening. One thing is sure though when it opens, it is going to be marvelous! That does it for this Skyliner update but stay tuned, we will be sure to bring you all the latest!
