2018 Showed a Huge Movie Surge

2018 Showed a Huge Movie Surge

The idea that movies and theaters are things of the past has been proved wrong in 2018. With new amenities like reclining seats and alcoholic beverages in theaters, movies theaters are popular again.

The exhibition, or movie theater, business came roaring back over the last year thanks to blockbusters like “Black Panther”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”. The domestic box office hit a new high of $11.5 billion in global revenues and the number is only getting higher with the recent release of “Aquaman” and “Mary Poppins Returns”.

Theater owners have a positive outlook for 2019 even after being written off as old-fashioned in the last few years and said to be replaced by streaming services like Amazon and Netflix.

Films like “Crazy Rich Asians”, “Black Panther”, and “Oceans 8” allowed Asians, black people, and women to star. In a time where diversity and inclusion are in the headlines, audiences around the world were happy to see movies that reflected human differences in a positive way.

Disney, with Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm, continues to dominate the movie industry with more than $3 billion in stateside revenue. Disney raked in more than $1.3 billion more than its closest competition, Universal. As part of a $71.3 billion merger, Disney will move even farther above the competition when they absorb a large portion of Fox’s film assets.

Although the future is bright, there are still a few concerns that the film business relies too much on a handful of specific genres. Six of the top 10 domestic released in 2018 were superhero related while nine of the top 10 were sequels or spinoffs. The only movie in the top 10 that wasn’t part of a pre-existing series was “The Grinch”, obviously something that has inspired other movies before.

Disney’s Chief of Live Action Film Studio Talks Mary Poppins and How Lion King Will be HUGE

Live-Action Lion King Trailer Breaks Disney Viewing Record Leaving Fans Wanting More

Live-Action Lion King Trailer Breaks Disney Viewing Record Leaving Fans Wanting More

Disney’s Chief of Live Action Film Studio sat down to talk about Mary Poppins, the Jungle Cruise, and how the Lion King will be HUGE!  Sean Bailey, chief architect of Disney’s live-action film studio sat down with the Hollywood Reporter to discuss life and the future of Disney films. He has been at the forefront of some of the biggest hits since 2010, including box office behemoths The Jungle Book (2016) and Beauty and the Beast (2017).

Mary Poppins Returns (bowing Dec. 19) is the next movie marking Bailey’s biggest challenge since taking the top job in 2010. (He worked as a writer-producer for Disney’s film studio and ABC from 2004 to 2008 and had gotten to know top Disney execs after teaming with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to launch LivePlanet, which had a deal with then-Disney-owned Miramax.)

Disney's Chief of Live Action Film Studio Talks Mary Poppins and How Lion King Will be HUGE

Take a look at the highlights from the interview here:

The Lion King trailer suggests it is a shot-for-shot remake. True?

The Lion King is a revered and beloved movie, so you’d better revere and love those parts that the audience wants. But there are things in the movie that are going to be new. [And] it is a new form of filmmaking. Historical definitions don’t work. It uses some techniques that would traditionally be called animation, and other techniques that would traditionally be called live action. It is an evolution of the technology Jon used in Jungle Book.

You are almost done remaking the A-list classic animated movies. How deep into the library will Disney go?

“I don’t know, because we might hear something that excites us. Take Maleficent. She was a character who cursed a baby because she didn’t get an invitation to a party, and we thought, “This is interesting.” We made a movie, and now we are making another movie. We will continue to play around in ways that I hope are interesting and unexpected.”

Disney's Chief of Live Action Film Studio Talks Mary Poppins and How Lion King Will be HUGE

What is your live-action strategy otherwise?

“There are projects like [2020’s] Jungle Cruise. We tip our hat to the [Disneyland] ride in a couple of places, but it’s a wholly invented new story and a hoped-for series of movies. We’re making Artemis Fowl with Ken Branagh, which is obviously a book series but hasn’t been on the screen. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman is something we’re excited about.”

Why has Disney had trouble launching original hits?

“I think of “original” in an interesting way. One pretty esteemed filmmaker we work with said using IP is a better art of war. You take the high ground, rather than fight up the hill. And we’re making original movies for our streaming service. We wrapped Stargirl, directed by Julia Hart, last week in New Mexico. We’re shooting Togo, based on real-life events about a dog and an incredible rescue in Alaska. Tom McCarthy (Spotlight) is showing us his movie in the coming weeks called Timmy Failure, which is, again, from a book series. None of these are Disney canon or have ever been on the screen before.”

You’ve hired Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to work on a possible Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Can Pirates survive without Johnny Depp?

“We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates] movies, but part of the reason Paul and Rhett are so interesting is that we want to give it a kick in the pants. And that’s what I’ve tasked them with.”

Disney is home to the biggest brands in movies: Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar. How do you find your own way?

“Just as Marvel has Iron Man and Thor and Captain America, maybe Belle and Cinderella and Mowgli and Simba are our superheroes. But we’re not going to interconnect them in a universe anytime soon, I promise. Simba isn’t in Jungle Cruise. (Laughs.)”

New Kinetic Wire Character Technology From Disney Research

New Kinetic Wire Character Technology From Disney Research

New Kinetic Wire Character Technology From Disney Research! Disney Research has been at the forefront of entertainment technology since day one of Walts vision for Disneyland. Since the 1960s and they’ve been improving technology created by Disney Imagineers including the first modern animatronics.

Times have changed and now Disney has developed some interesting techniques for animated characters made from wire.  “The Disney team came up with a computational model to predict which template shapes could be added to each wire to make it bend to fit the animation needs without deforming. A commercially available CNC wire bender installs the templates that lie in the plane of the wire, while coiled templates are added later with a spring-bending jig.”-HACKDAY

New Kinetic Wire Character Technology From Disney Research

Elastically deforming wire structures are lightweight, durable, and can be bent within minutes using CNC bending machines. We present a computational technique for the design of kinetic wire characters, tailored for fabrication on consumer-grade hardware. Our technique takes as input a network of curves or a skeletal animation, then estimates a cable-driven, compliant wire structure which matches user-selected targets or keyframes as closely as possible. To enable large localized deformations, we shape wire into functional spring-like entities at a discrete set of locations. We first detect regions where changes to local stiffness properties are needed, then insert bendable entities of varying shape and size.

To avoid a discrete optimization, we first optimize stiffness properties of generic, non-fabricable entities which capture well the behavior of our bendable designs. To co-optimize stiffness properties and cable forces, we formulate an equilibrium-constrained minimization problem, safeguarding against inelastic deformations. We demonstrate our method on six fabricated examples, showcasing rich behavior including large deformations and complex, spatial motion.

Take a look at the technology and how it works!

Epcot International Festival of the Holidays is Coming to An End!

Epcot Festival of the Holidays

Sad news y’all! The Epcot International Festival of the Holidays is coming to an end on December 30th. Wa, Wa.  Don’t worry! It will be back next Holiday season!!

Epcot International Festival of the Holidays is Coming to An End!

My favorite Holiday celebration is Las Fiestas Navidenas a lo Mexico! I love Authentic Mexican food.  I have the best memories with my family back home in Texas that involve Mexican food.  In fact, every New Year’s we do a Mexican celebration at my mother’s house.  It’s a great way to start off the year on the right foot.

Located in the Mexico Pavilion, the Feliz Navidad event is a daily Fiesta!! Guests are immersed in the culture with a festive Mariachi band and dancers!  Their outfits are to die for!  The colors are gorgeous in the authentic wardrobe, I love how the dresses flow as the ladies twirl around as they dance.  I seriously wish I didn’t have two left feet and could dance as well as they can!

Guests can also enjoy authentic Mexican Dishes at Las Posadas Holiday Kitchen.  Check out some of these delicious authentic dishes you can try at the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays!  I am a sucker for enchiladas, so this first dish would be first on my list.

Guests can enjoy the Enchiladas de Pollo con Mole, which is chipotle chicken in a corn tortilla topped with mole negro and garnished with shredded Oaxaca cheese and sesame seeds.  MMMM! Is it lunch time yet?!

This next dish also sounds really good!! Guests can enjoy a Tamal de Camaron, a corn tamal stuffed with gukillo-marinated shrimp topped with mole rojo and shredded cotija cheese.  My son would love this one!  To finish off dinner, guest can try the sweet Arroz con Leche, which is rice pudding with cranberries.

Everything sounds and looks so good!  This is just a small taste of what you can find at the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays!!  The festival events are always worth going to no matter the season.  I highly suggest you try one out sometime, I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Jon Favreau Reveals New Detail About Star Wars Series

Jon Favreau Reveals New Detail About Star Wars Series

Jon Favreau Reveals New Detail About Star Wars Series. By now you may have heard of a new Star Wars Series called “The Mandalorian,” coming to Disney+ streaming service. You also may have heard that Jon Favreau has penned and will be acting as Executive Producer for the series. The Cast for “The Mandalorian” includes Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Kingsman:The Golden Circle), Gina Carano (Deadpool), Nick Nolte (Hulk), along with Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Shallow, and Omid Abtahi. Though the roles for these talented stars remain a heavily guarded secret, Executive Producer, Jon Favreau, may have let one secret slip.

On Christmas Day, Dec 25, 2018, Favreau posted this picture with the simple message: “Merry Christmas!” on Instagram.

My guess is this was not the droid you were looking for.

Star Wars fans with a keen eye would be able to tell you that this is IG-88, also known as IG-88B or a Phlutdroid, which is an assassin droid in the Star Wars Universe. IG-88 is a chief rival to a certain Mandalorian you may know, named Boba Fett. Funny enough, we may already know the fate of IG-88, as the droids remains can be seen in a Cloud City junk room in The Empire Strikes Back, aka Star Wars: Episode V.

Though we may not know what role IG-88 will play in the series, this new droid will make its appearance in the Pedro Pascal led “The Mandalorian.” The new Star Wars Series is set to take place between the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of The First Order.

“The Mandalorian” will be available, with other exclusive content, for viewing via the Disney+ streaming service. Disney+ is expected to launch in late 2019.

From all of us here at Chip and Co, Thank You, Jon Favreau, for this wonderful Star Wars Christmas present!

Miss Adventure Falls Will Stay Closed For an Undetermined Amount of Time

Miss Adventure Falls Will Stay Closed For an Undetermined Amount of Time

Miss Adventure Falls at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time due to an accident with a guest earlier this month.  We had been receiving reports from fans that Miss Adventure Falls has remained closed with no signs of reopening.

Earlier this month,  a guest was injured on tube ride at Typhoon LagoonWFTV9 Orlando reported that a guest was injured on Miss Adventure Falls. The 44-year-old man’s arm was stuck in a conveyor belt on the ride. Orange County Sheriffs Office reported the guest’s injuries were not life-threatening.

“A guest’s arm was injured while on the Miss Adventure Falls water attraction at Typhoon Lagoon. The attraction is currently closed while we review the incident. Right now, our care and concern is with the guest and his family,” a Disney spokeswoman said in a statement.

We called Typhoon Lagoon and a Guest Services agent told us the ride has not opened since the accident and that it will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time.  We were told at least through the end of the year.  Stay tuned for more details as we get them on the status of Miss Adventure Falls at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon.

Verizon Fios Users Beware as Media Companies Hash Things Out!

ABC TV group
ABC TV group

verizon fios

If you are a Verizon Fios customer, it is possible you may have already seen the messages.  Viewers of the Disney-owned networks, such as ABC and ESPN, may no longer be available to subscribers of Verizon Fios.

This clash is the latest example of two big media companies hashing things out over the terms of carrying content to customers.  Currently, Dish and AT&T’s HBO are in a similar battle over their popular pay-TV outlet, which has resulted in days-long blackouts on the satellite company’s service.  Federal regulators take a dim view and put consumers in the middle of a fight between two corporations and offer little recourse.  Since 2010, according to the American Television Alliance, cable and satellite companies have worked through more than 800 blackouts, with 212 in 2017 alone.

The Disney Company has warned that the contract with Verizon Fios is slated to end at 5 pm on New Year’s Day.  However, things seem as if they are not set in stone yet after Disney made the following statement, “Our proven history of providing extraordinary value to consumers and distributors is unmatched. But our negotiations continue in earnest and we remain optimistic that we can reach a deal.”

Verizon Fios is also trying to remain optimistic by stating, “We are actively negotiating with Disney to ensure the best deal for our customers.”  At the end of 2017, Verizon Fios reached about 4.6 million subscribers.  In the third quarter of this year, Verizon lost 63,000 video subscriptions but “notched a net-add” of 54,000 internet connections.   That is a lot of customers lost if this negotiation doesn’t go through!

What do you think?  Are you a Verizon Fios customer?  Have you seen the ad that reads, “Don’t lose your shows”?  Would this loss even affect you as a customer?
