Attention, recruits! It looks like our favorite Space Ranger is taking a temporary leave from the front lines. Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at Disneyland Park has officially powered down for a scheduled refurbishment.
If you were planning on heading to Tomorrowland to defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg this month, you’ll want to adjust your flight path.
The attraction officially closed its doors on Monday, April 13. While Walt Disney World recently celebrated the grand reopening of its own version of the ride—Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin—it’s now time for the West Coast version to get a little bit of TLC.
Currently, the Disneyland operating calendar shows no hours for the attraction through at least May 25. Since Disney typically releases park hours about six weeks in advance, we don’t have a confirmed reopening date just yet, but it’s clear the Space Rangers will be off-duty for at least the next several weeks.
While Disney hasn’t officially detailed the extent of the work, recent permits give us a “mission brief” on what’s happening inside Building #8101. The refurbishment includes a tenant improvement project focused on the unload area, where crews will be modifying a half-wall to accommodate a brand-new gate.
In addition to the layout changes, the “Space Ranger Corps” is also getting some technical upgrades. The permits call for:
Mechanical Work: Installation of new fans in the Electronic Equipment Room (EER).
Electrical Upgrades: General electrical work throughout the attraction to keep systems running smoothly.
While the Florida version of the ride recently enjoyed a more intensive update (including new ride vehicles and refreshed scenes), the work at Disneyland seems focused on operational efficiency and general maintenance. These updates to the unload area and cooling systems should ensure a smoother experience for guests and better climate control for the ride’s technical brains.
Even though Buzz is away, there is still plenty of action to find in Tomorrowland! You can still test your mettle on Space Mountain, find your way through the galaxy on Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, or catch a glimpse of the ongoing construction in the area.

Disney Animation’s Songs in Sign Language Arrives This Month
Get ready to experience your favorite Disney songs in a beautiful new way! In honor of National Deaf History Month, Disney+ is set to debut a groundbreaking new series, Disney Animation’s Songs in Sign Language, on April 27.
This special release features three beloved musical sequences from recent Walt Disney Animation Studios hits, newly reimagined and animated in American Sign Language (ASL). Whether you’re an Encanto fan or can’t stop singing along to Frozen 2, this is a “must-watch” event for the whole family.

“Sign language is one of the most beautiful ways of communication on Earth,” Osmond shared. “If ever there was a medium to showcase sign language, it was animation. This reimagining helps bring down barriers and allows us to connect in a special way with our audiences in the Deaf community.”
DJ Kurs, the artistic director for Deaf West Theatre, echoed the importance of this historic moment. Alongside choreographer Catalene Sacchetti and a group of eight performers, the team focused on translating the concepts and emotions of the lyrics rather than a word-for-word transcription.
“For so long, we have known and loved the artistic medium of Disney Animation,” Kurs said. “Here, the art form was adapting to us. I hope this unlocks possibilities in the minds and hearts of Deaf children.”
