Every Live-Action Remake Currently “In the Works” at Walt Disney Studios. There are nearly 20 live-action remake titles currently or rumored to be in the works at Walt Disney Studios, here is a recap of all 19 titles coming soon from Disney and Disney+:

Aladdin Sequel (Confirmed) and Disney+ Spin-Off (Rumored, Disney+)

Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud, and Will Smith have yet to be asked to reprise their roles as Jasmine, Aladdin, and Genie, but will likely be given an offer after an official script is approved by Disney. Disney has also confirmed the film will receive a theatrical release, not the previously believed premiere on their exclusive streaming service, Disney+. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are set to return to produce the sequel, it is currently unknown if Guy Richie will return to direct Aladdin 2. Rumored to be in the works in an Aladdin spin-off film featuring Prince Anders (Billy Magnussen) that will also focus on the origin story of Will Smith’s Genie.


Bambi (Confirmed)

Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Chaos Walking) are penning the script for Disney’s next “live-action’ remake of Bambi. Chris and Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano are set as producers for the film. The Bambi remake will be similarly styled to The Jungle Book and The Lion King, incorporating real film with CGI characters. No official casting or plot details have been made at this time.

Beauty and the Beast Prequel Series (Confirmed, Disney+)

Set in the iconic kingdom of “Beauty and the Beast” years before the Beast and Belle’s epic romance, the series will follow Gaston and LeFou as they set off with LeFou’s step-sister, Tilly, after a surprising revelation from her past comes to light, sending the unlikely trio off on an unexpected journey filled with romance, comedy, and adventure.  While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets. The ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Limited Series will star Josh Gad, Briana Middleton, and Luke Evans. “Beauty and the Beast” is executive produced by Gad, Kitsis, Horowitz, Menken and Tommy and produced by Evans.  Gad, Kitsis and Horowitz are co-showrunners and writers for the limited series.  The soundtrack will be released by Walt Disney Records.

Charming (Rumored)

A film focused on Prince Charming and his family has been rumored for years, but as momentum grows for live-action films, it appears Disney is looking to develop a film that will follow the story of Cinderella from the perspective of Prince Charming’s younger brother. It is currently unknown if the film would tie into the live-action Cinderella film that starred Lily James and Richard Madden. Writer/director Stephen Chbosky is currently signed on the pen the script for Disney. No official casting or plot details have been made at this time.

Cruella 2 (Rumored)

It is currently unknown if the original cast will return for the film, but it hard to imagine the sequel moving forward without their leading lady (Emma Stone) and spot-on support cast! Director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara have already signed on to return for Cruella 2. Disney has yet to share if the film will receive a theatrical release or premiere exclusively on Disney+ when the time comes. No other casting or plot details have been made at this time.

Hercules (Confirmed)

The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe Russo confirmed the news that they would be a part of the executive producing team, along with Jeffrey Silver and Karen Gilchrist, for the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s Hercules. No official casting details have been made at this time.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Confirmed)

Disney is in the very early stages of a live-action Hunchback of Notre Dame which is based on Disney’s animated film from 1996 and Victor Hugo’s novel “Notre-Dame de Paris” from 1831. Currently, Josh Gad is slated as an executive producer for the film, but no casting details have been made at this time.

The Jungle Book Sequel (Confirmed)

Director Jon Favreau, screenwriter Justin Marks, and star Neel Sethi are currently signed on to return for the sequel. No other casting or plot details have been made at this time.

Lilo & Stitch (Confirmed)

The remake will be a hybrid of live-action and CGI for the alien characters. Fans of the animated movie will be delighted to hear that the original voice of Stitch, Chris Sanders, is eager to return as the voice Stitch for the Disney+ movie, with rumors that ‘Upside Down Magic’ Star Siena Agudong has been cast as Lilo. Mike Van Waes wrote the script for the live-action Lilo & Stitch movie. Studio executives Zoe Kent and Louie Provost are in charge of this movie’s production. Both Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are set to produce the live-action remake. No official casting details have been made at this time.

The Lion King 2 (Confirmed)

Reportedly the new film will follow Mufasa’s origin story as well as progressing the story of Simba and his family. Director Barry Jenkins will replace Jon Favreau as director for the sequel. Disney has yet to share if the original cast, including Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, James Earl Jones, John Oliver, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Eric Andre, Amy Sedaris, Florence Kasumba, and Chance the Rapper, will return for the sequel. Jeff Nathanson (The Lion King 2019) will return to pen the script for the sequel, with Barry Jenkins acting as director for the sequel.

The Little Mermaid (Confirmed)

Filming is currently underway on the Island of Sardinia off the coast of Italy. The Cast for Disney’s Live-Action The Little Mermaid currently includes Halle Bailey (Ariel), Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Javier Bardem (King Triton), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Emily Coates (Unspecified, rumored: Vanessa), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), Awkwafina (Scuttle) and Noma Dumezweni (unspecified). Disney has yet to announce a premiere date for the film.

Night on Bald Mountain (Rumored)

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have signed on to pen the script for Disney. The film will focus on Fantasia‘s Chernabog. No other casting or plot details have been made at this time.

Peter Pan & Wendy (Confirmed, Disney+)

Principal photography on the live-action adventure/fantasy “Peter Pan & Wendy” has commenced in Vancouver, Canada. The film is directed by David Lowery (“Pete’s Dragon”) and produced by Jim Whitaker (“Pete’s Dragon”). The film stars Jude Law (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) as Captain Hook; Yara Shahidi (“Grown-ish”) as Tinkerbell; Ever Anderson (“Black Widow”) as Wendy; Alexander Molony (“The Reluctant Landlord”) as Peter Pan; Molly Parker (“House of Cards”) as Mrs. Darling; Alan Tudyk (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”) as Mr. Darling; newcomers Joshua Pickering as John; Jacobi Jupe as Michael and Alyssa Wapanatâhk as Tiger Lily; and Jim Gaffigan (“The Jim Gaffigan Show”) as Smee. “Peter Pan & Wendy” will premiere on Disney+ in 2022.

Pinocchio (Confirmed, Disney+)

The upcoming Disney+ movie is a mix of live action and CGI. The main character is the memorable puppet of course. He will be voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth since the wooden puppet character requires CGI. The film stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Pinocchio), Tom Hanks (Geppetto), Cynthia Erivo (Blue Fairy), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Jiminy Cricket), Keegan-Michael Key (Honest John) and Luke Evans (The Coachman).

Robin Hood (Confirmed, Disney+)

The live-action Robin Hood will follow the lead of the animated feature with a more musically involved story and will once again feature anthropomorphic characters, only this time in a live-action/CG hybrid format. Set to direct the film is Carlos Lopez Estrada (Blindspotting) and penning the script is Kari Granlund (Lady and the Tramp (2019), Godmothered). Justin Springer (Tron: Legacy, Dumbo) is signed on to produce the film for Disney+. No casting details have been made at this time.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Confirmed)

Hollywood newcomer Rachel Zegler (West Side Story, Shazam!) will play the iconic role of Snow White in the upcoming remake. The live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is set to film in Vancouver, Canada, directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) with Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) penning the script. Marc Platt (Mary Poppins Returns) will act as producer for the remake. Oscar-winning songwriters, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, will be creating new music for the film, similarly to their work with Disney Legend Alan Menken in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin. No other casting details have been made at this time.

The Sword in the Stone (Confirmed, Disney+)

Brian Cogman (Game of Thrones) is currently penning a script for the live-action remake coming to Disney+. No other casting or plot details have been made at this time.

Tangled (Rumored)

Though Disney has yet to confirm rumors of a live-action Tangled film, there have been rumors that casting invites have been sent out to several high profile actors and actresses that seem to hint at the movie being in development at Disney. One of the animated films stars Zachary Levi has already said he would not reprise his role as Flynn Rider / Eugene Fitzherbert IF a live-action movie is in development. No casting details have been made at this time.

Tinker Bell (Rumored, Disney+)

It is currently unknown if the solo Tinker Bell live-action movie will be tied to the new Peter Pan & Wendy movie coming to Disney+, but it seems that the studio is interested in exploring more of our favorite Tinker Fairy from Pixie Hallow! No casting details have been made at this time.
